The Scout Squad panel are back with their long-list of candidates to be considered for our regular Scout Picks selection on Friday.

The 72 nominations will be whittled down to a squad of 15 (with the starting XI not exceeding £83m and no club represented by more than three players) ahead of the Gameweek 7 deadline at 11:30 BST on Saturday.

Peter “three top 300 finishes” Kouwenberg and Scoutcast regulars/site contributors Az, Joe and Paul explain their noteworthy squad selections and omissions in the article below.

Manchester City’s home encounter with poor travellers Brighton and Hove Albion has persuaded each of our panel to nominate a defender, midfielder and forward from Pep Guardiola’s side, with unanimity over Sergio Aguero‘s inclusion.

Wolves and Spurs are well-fancied, as Harry Kane gets a clean sweep of nominations for the first time in 2018/19.

Our knowledgeable quartet are also anticipating goals at Goodison Park, with Richarlison and Aleksandar Mitrovic receiving four votes each.

Our choice of premium players for the Scout Picks XI may ultimately determine its success.

Man City and Spurs have the fixtures to justify overlooking Mohamed Salah and Eden Hazard for their head-to-head at Stamford Bridge.

My one concern with Sergio Aguero is that his pitch time was managed on either side of City’s Champions League match with Lyon – 53 minutes at home to Fulham in Gameweek 5, followed by an hour away to Cardiff last weekend.

While I back Aguero to start, I’m hoping that Pep Guardiola doesn’t opt for a similar approach with his star striker on Saturday, given that City are back in Europe next midweek.

Son Heung-min is admittedly a gamble in midfield, though could be worth considering if Harry Kane is beyond our budget.

The South Korean was handed his first league start last weekend, and, having been omitted from last night’s Carabao Cup XI, could be unleashed against Huddersfield.

Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli’s lack of cutting edge can work in Son’s favour, the pair scoring one league goal between them this season.

In his previous meeting with the Terriers, Son netted both Spurs’ goals in a 2-0 home win.

Elsewhere, Cardiff’s Sean Morrison carries a decent goal threat from defence.

In terms of underlying numbers, Morrison is the only defender to be ranked top for expected goals for his side. No Cardiff player has bettered his two big chances or seven key passes ahead of Burnley’s visit.

Morrison served up two clean sheets and a pair of assists prior to last weekend’s loss to Man City. Meanwhile, The Clarets arrive with just two goals from their three road trips.

Newcastle’s weakness from dead-ball situations promotes a double-up on Harry Maguire and James Maddison at St James’ Park.

The Magpies have conceded 31 efforts from set-plays, more than any other side.

Maddison’s delivery looks tailor-made for Maguire, whose goal threat appears to be on the rise.

All four of his efforts in the box have arrived in the last two Gameweeks.

As discussed on this week’s Scoutcast, Chelsea’s home clash with Liverpool looks tough to call and historically the omens are not good from a Fantasy Premier League perspective. Neither side has scored more than a goal in their last three league clashes and there’s only been one clean sheet over that run, when Chelsea won 1-0 in May last season.

With plenty of other good options elsewhere I’m going to swerve this clash of the titans.

Manchester City’s hosting of Brighton looks far more enticing, with a clean sheet and attacking points likely. With doubts over Benjamin Mendy’s fitness, I’ve opted for Aymeric Laporte for Sky Blues defensive cover. At £5.6m he’s kindly priced and has started all league games so far. Sergio Aguero’s midweek Carabao Cup rest suggests he will also start against a Brighton outfit that has shipped 11 goals this campaign. Raheem Sterling’s mere 35-minute run-out against Oxford United also indicates he will make this weekend’s first XI.

The Goodison Park encounter between Everton and Fulham looks like offering us lots of goals, with Toffees talisman Richarlison and Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic set to prosper. The Serbian striker has notched five goals and an assist this season, while the Brazilian has found the net three times in just four starts.

Burnley’s impressive 4-0 defeat of Bournemouth last time out plus an easy trip to relegation certainties Cardiff sees me select two Clarets players – Joe Hart and Johann Berg Gudmundsson. The former England stopper is top for saves this season and his clean sheet prospects are buoyed by the return from injury of Steven Defour. The Belgian helped Sean Dyche’s troops keep ten clean sheets in the 24 matches he was involved in last season. Meanwhile, the Icelander’s two assists against the Cherries last weekend underlined his superb creativity.

Quite a tough one this week, with the Liverpool v Chelsea game meaning that a lot of the usual Scout Pick go-tos aren’t as appealing as they have been. I’ve kept faith with Mohamed Salah though, who just about clings on to a spot in my picks. I think Liverpool will just have too much for Chelsea, even at Stamford Bridge, and I actually think this is a great game for Salah against his former club to show that he hasn’t lost his edge this season.

There are a couple of standout games for me.

I couldn’t choose between Jonny and Matt Doherty in defence for Wolves, so I have gone for both of them. Jonny looks really unlucky not to have registered some attacking returns yet and seems to do better on the Bonus Points System. This is a great game for him to show that he can rival Doherty for a spot in our teams and I can’t see anything other than a clean sheet for Wolves in this one.

Spurs look set to put a woeful Huddersfield to the sword, meanwhile. Even though I have not been overly impressed with the Lilywhites, a win seems inevitable. Dele Alli looks a great pick this week now he’s back from injury, as does Kieran Trippier who is on set pieces.

Manchester City also look assured of beating Brighton, who have only won one point away from home in three attempts. I really can’t see a surprise here, even with Anthony Knockaert playing his best football in years. Raheem Sterling, Aymeric Laporte and Sergio Aguero all look likely to start and could inflict some real damage.

For a differential captain punt (because let’s face it, we’re all going for Aguero), Richarlison has to be considered. Fulham are absolutely terrible in defence and the Brazilian looked threatening on his return to the Everton side against Arsenal (in the first half at least). I’m expecting goals in this game and both Richarlison and Aleksandar Mitrovic should prosper. I’m also really hoping Richarlison gets to play up front; I’m licking my lips at that prospect and the signs are good with Cenk Tosun’s benching last week.

Up front, my forwards pick themselves really. Along with Aguero, I really like the look of Alexandre Lacazette, who is making the most of his chances and is playing for an Arsenal side who are starting to find their feet. I’ve reluctantly put Harry Kane in my picks, because of the opposition, but I won’t be taking a hit to get him in my own team. I do think if he’s going to challenge for the Golden Boot this year, he needs to score a couple of goals in the next few games. Mitrovic and Jamie Vardy carry the most attacking threat for their teams and are playing against quite porous defences so I definitely wouldn’t bet against them to score a few goals between them.

Away from the Etihad and Molineux, I’ll acknowledge that most of my selections this week don’t possess both of the sought-after qualities of great form and fixture, but let’s kick off with a quick focus on the Citizens and Wolves.
With a trip to face Hoffenheim on Tuesday, the fact that Aymeric Laporte, Leroy Sane and Sergio Aguero were all rested against Oxford United does not guarantee the full 90 minutes (or even a starting berth) come Saturday. However, the league’s most potent offence and second-tightest defence clearly command our full attention as Brighton roll into town without a clean sheet to their name.

Averaging a chance every 14.5 minutes, Aguero has shown that he doesn’t always need a full match to get in on the action, whilst Sane seems likely to profit if Benjamin Mendy’s absence continues. Laporte, meanwhile, has had eight attempts on goal this season, although only half of these were inside the box and just two on target.

Like City, Wolves have only conceded four big chances this season, despite already facing both Manchester clubs. The visiting Saints welcome back Danny Ings but have only six goals to show for their (sixth-highest total of) 85 shots. A defensive double-up of Rui Patricio and Matt Doherty seems in order, particularly given that no defender can better the Irishman’s eight shots in the box.

I’m also backing Raul Jimenez, who only trails Aguero and another of my picks, Aleksandar Mitrovic, for attempts amongst strikers. A slight warning, though, that Southampton sit mid-table as far as shots and goals conceded are concerned.

Harry Kane’s selection required more deliberation than in previous seasons and the decision of whether to play hokey-cokey with another premium player such as Mohamed Salah for the coming run of Huddersfield, Cardiff and West Ham is understandably occupying many an FPL manager’s thoughts. Whilst I personally am probably going to focus my own transfers elsewhere, there have been some signs of life in Kane, who has as many goals (three) as and only one fewer assist (one) than Liverpool’s talismanic Egyptian and I anticipate that his undoubted potential will see him make the final Scout Picks this week.

My final thoughts are on the weekend’s glamour tie as the Bluebirds host the Clarets, a game possibly spared final billing on Match of the Day purely because it takes place as the sole fare on offer on “Super” Sunday. Neither team has looked prolific this season with a combined tally of ten goals, four of which came in Burnley’s last fixture against Bournemouth. Indeed, Cardiff have found the net just twice in their three home fixtures and Burnley likewise in their three away games.

Let’s put the “expected goal involvement” (xGI) to the test and back Sean Morrison to get involved in the event that Cardiff can add to that tally, given that the centre-half currently tops that delta for defenders and already has two assists to his name.

The Community Champion

This week’s champion is Boris Bodega, whose best finish in five seasons of competing was 80,866 in 2016/17.

The Community Champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2018/19 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

Last week’s champion, Hasselbaink Forever, lost out to our Scout Picks 51-59 with a 3-4-3 line-up of Alisson (6); van Dijk (1), van Aanholt (6), Sakho (6); Hazard (3), Mane (3), Sane (6), Richarlison (2); Mitrovic (8), Lacazette (8), Giroud (2).

Eden Wizard’s Gameweek 2 victory over the Scout Squad crew by a score of 77-68 remains the deficit to beat.

Can't decide who to potentially bench out of Fraser and Jimenez.

Is it worth burning my bench boost? These very rarely work out as well as you expect anyway, do they? Saving for dgw etc, using a WC one week, bench boost the next.

But it's a relatively poor bench I'd be bringing in,

Fraser/Jimenez, Holebas, AWB. Hamer non playing keeper.

    Thoughts?

    Hi all,

    Hennesey
    Alonso Robertson Trippier
    Fraser Hazard Mane Moura
    Wilson Aguero Mitrovic
    Subs: Begovic WB Pedro Holebas

Already swapped out Mendy this week so another change is a -4 but the Che-Liv fixture is an annoying one.

    A) Change Pedro this week for Richarlison (-4) & sub Mane/Hazard?
    B) Hold fire and swap out Pedro next week on a FT

Any suggested tweaks to the starters/subs also welcomed as i can't quite figure out who to risk dropping!

  7. FPL manager psychology
    IRBOX ⚽

    7 years, 3 months ago

Psychology and behaviour of the best and also average FPL managers has been something on my mind of late and I have broken it down into theee separate categories.

    1) Herd mentality (group think). Often people will choose the most popular opinion/options. Studies have shown that people will inadvertently answer a question incorrectly if people around them are also answering the question incorrectly. Even if they know the correct solution, their mindset is altered by others. People hate to be wrong and will often think others have the better ideas. Walcott triple-rising is a prime example.. thousands of managers piled on thinking this was the best choice and that decision gained momentum from the masses. We all know how that turned out. The very best managers are able to separate their decision making from the masses.

    2) Ownership. A highly owned player is known to be a rank destroyer for non-owners should they haul. Conversely a low ownership player will give a big green arrow for those that own should the player do well. Studies also find that people think rare assets or commodities are much more valuable than their much more common counterparts. This can be a down-fall for FPL players, especially those chasing points. As Philman alluded to on ‘meet the manager’ it was these types of risky decisions on low owned players which resulted in his worst ever rank in 17/18. Jonty had a similar experience in 16/17 by going against the grain and making maverick moves, which when don’t come off can be a rank killer. The poor season can be exacerbated and I think this is perticularlt pertinent in selecting a captain.

    3) Form vs Fixtures. This is perhaps the most interesting debate of them all. Do you select the in form players (Aguero, Hazard, Salah), or those with the fixtures (Kane). I am a big advocate for form over fixtures, however, Philman also made an interesting case that fixtures can dictate and produce form, even in players performing below standard prior to the easy fixtures. A lot of people are jumping on Kane for the upcoming gameweeks and interesting stat is that Kane actullt has a better conversion rate this season that last. True he isn’t having as many shots so some could argue there is less margin for error, however, I would be much more inclined to jump on if he was consistently topping the shots count.

As a side note, Salah will be running at Luiz/Rudiger and Alonso this weekend, who Yarmolenko made look extremely ordinary last weekend, finding loads of space and numerous attacking opportunities.

To be honest the only reason why I play this game is for that moment when my calculated(or not) gamble pays off spectacularly. There is no better feeling than having that low ownership player/or less popular player exploded and scored a brace. At that moment I really feel like I 've just scouted the next Paul Pogba or Eden Hazard. Yes, mathematically speaking, you might be better off saving the FT or not taking hits, but that to a certain extent takes away the main reason why we play this game. To have a little bit of fun.

Gambler's fallacy is the biggest problem IMO.

Also I think the "form vs fixtures" debate is nonsensical, because I've never seen form measured/defined so as far as I'm concerned it's meaningless. It's just a game of probabilities and the factors that drive said probability.

Fact is we analyse fixtures in a very childish way around here. We just separe top 6 teams from mid table teams, and mid table teams form the last ones. There are red fixtures, okay fixtures, and green fixtures. It's lazy. For example, everybody said Hazard v West Ham was an excellent fixture. But nobody went deeper. West Ham was at home and needed any kind of result, they needed to show strenght at the back too. Those who thought that it would easily be a haul for Hazard were mistaken, because they interpreted badly the form and fixtures stuff. They thought a player on form can't blank (he can), and they thought a end of table team is a good fixture (it can be, most of the time, it wasn't last week end).

      1. IRBOX ⚽
        • 8 Years
        7 years, 3 months ago

I agree with this.. much more analysis needs to be done to produce the fixture difficulty rating. A ‘red’ fixture can often be gold for an attacking asset of the opposing team. Just because they aren’t favoured to win, doesn’t mean they won’t perform in terms of FPL points

      2. Deulofail
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 3 months ago

The childish way isn't all bad. It takes into account averages over time. I'm actually purposely trying to choose more players from top teams this season, at least at this stage, in an attempt to avoid the unpredictability that comes from the variance of non top-6 teams. Rarely do top teams have a Jose season where they plummet in performance, only minor slumps.

The problem with going deeper without the tools to really know what's going on inside the club and inside the manager and players' heads, is that our bias can actually take over even more. You are writing a narrative by saying that West Ham "needed any kind of result, they needed to show strenght at the back too". However it could be equally true that they are shite again. It might be 5 weeks until they are good, and then bad the next 2 weeks, then good for 10. I don't have enough faith in my capacity to predict defensive form based on contextual factors such asplayer and club embarrassment. 😀

I agree pretty strongly with Philman that form tends to follow fixtures (which is why I started with 3 Liverpool, and why I got Hazard in with those easy home fixtures before a lot of people did)

However, ownership is also a big factor (as I found out last year going with Hazard/Sane/Sterling/Mane/Countinho instead of Salah), if you go early and get in the player with 'fixtures' over the higher owned player with 'form' and they end up with less points, you're kinda screwed.

Aguero/Salah -> Kane for the next 3 is a prime example where the two decisions clash; people are talking about Kane 'not being in form' but, even if that is the case, he doesn't really need to be in order to hit a couple of braces against the two worst teams in the league. On the flip side, if he does perform poorly and you've transferred out Aguero or Salah, it could be a pretty big rank drop. You've not only got to hope Kane does really well, but that one of those two also don't (probably unlikely).

*obviously a lot of people started with 3 Liverpool, but many were slow on the uptake with Hazard (like they could be with Kane), all easy to say afterwards though - Kane could also be terrible, as could have Hazard, no-one knows

Spurs may well be playing the worst teams in the league but the filling in that white bread sandwich? Yes, Messi and friends. Poch will limit Kane's minutes I'm sure.

Number 2 is just two examples from managers who couldn’t claw their ranks back by using differentials. That doesn’t mean it’s not the way to go, but simply that they were unsuccessful in doing it.
How can you expect to catch up if your team is top 10k template? You may score well and overtake dead teams but depending on your starting position, you’ll never make a decent end of season rank.
If you’ve had a bad start there is only one way to catch up and that’s by gambling against the template. It may not work, but at least you’ll have a chance.

one of the key points that always comes out in many interviews with top FPL managers is patience.
Very difficult to claw back points quickly but one good differential can push you up the rankings over a period of GWs.
Throwing in 2 or 3 differentials then changing to a 2 or 3 other ones because they don't pay off immediately is only going to send you down the rankings.
Wait and see how many top managers will quietly introduce a Newcastle defender over next 2 GWs to take advantage of their incredible run of fixtures.

I'd also add the gamblers paradox.
You make a mistake one week (captain/bench choice), and you try to make those points up in the next weeks by making different decisions to what you may have made, or conversely by not taking a risk you would have. A prime example of this is that I benched Mendy GW1, and then felt I couldn't captain Aguero the next over Salah because I felt the safer option was Salah. 14pt mistake grew to a 25pt one.

And I know benching Mendy seems silly now, but I thought Arsenal would score, & Wolves wouldn't concede, with Boly having goal threat & Bonus potential (which to be fair he does).

I benched Mendy too and will do it again if I feel the need. Like you said, I also thought Arsenal will score. Didnt expect them to look so dire. Awb did give me 12 that week so really cant have too many complaints. My logic was I expected Palace to have a better chance at a CS than City and it's what I'll continue to use and hopefully it pays off

Ah another Mendy bencher, I thought it was just Mark and I. Yes the logic was there, he just punished me badly, I had AWB on the bench too as I played my three home defenders, 2 got C/S, Boly didn't, but AWB and Mendy outscored them. What I've learned is when in doubt to play the player with the higher ownership tbh, Mendy hurt because loads of people had him, AWB didn't as much because he was on most other people's benchs too. Glad you are sticking to your guns though. Out of interest if you have liv/Chelsea defenders this week what are you doing with them?

Interestingly, I played Mendy in GW1 and my rationale was how ordinary City made Chelsea look in the Community Shield. I wouldn’t be amazed if a full strength Liverpool side do the same on Saturday.

That was a completely new Chelsea team with several missing pieces, playing at a neutral stadium. Chelsea are miles better at Stamford bridge with Kovacic, Kanté and Hazard in the team.

Sorry seeing this really late. It depends on the rest of your team obviously but if I were to pick one of Robbo and Alonso, I'll go Robbo. Gut feeling that Liverpool will win and I believe they have a much stronger defense than Chelsea. Can see Salah pegging Alonso back a lot but it would also conversely be interesting if Hazard switches wings as we saw him target Moreno in the cups
Obviously Robbo a better player but that could also push him back as well and make TAA the biggest winner with him being on set pieces. All in all, I'll go Robbo>TAA>Alonso

Very interesting points. I've always been a fixture over form person and plan to take out Aguero for Kane soon.

To your first point, I think it's really important for you to be able to know how to filter all the information here and make the best decision. You need to have some guiding rules. For instance, some weeks back I preached benching Robbo against Spurs for Wan B. That worked out for me(though Mendy didnt play so Robbo entered anyway) but that is not to say those who claim starting a premium def regardless of fixtures are wrong. That's their logic and it's what has worked for them. It's just that some people on here see others saying always start a premium def and then they go against their initial gut feeling and then if it doesnt work out, come here to complain.

Started following this space pre-season and its been very useful but you have to be careful to think for yourself. Saw a guy complaining the other day and blaming everyone on here for his low ovr rank and saying he would have been better off if he stayed clear. That's just a load of nonsense. You're the one responsible for your decisions at the end of the day and that's what separates the wheat from the chaff, making good decisions based on information assessed.

The second is almost the opposite of Group think yet marked as a logical flaw. I think the distinction is simply that not all herd decisions are wrong. There may be some sort of crowd wisdom at work here and it makes a lot of sense because the popular assets are more likely to be that way because they are good choices.

The question is when is one a case of "Wisdom of Crowds" and another the more insulting "herd mentality"

        1) People own him so I will do well to own him
        2) People don't own him so I will do well to own him

Both are logically flawed, don't ya think? Both rely on a connection between ownership and points which doesn't exist.

Ownership might be useful in the latter stages of the season, but on average, any decisions that factor ownership into the equation will get you fewer points than decisions that don't (assuming you are better at picking players than your rival(s)).

You can be "safe" by covering players that your rival has, which means they will close the gap to you more slowly because you have reduced the potential variance, but if you completely ignored his team, you are likely to get more points (while conversely being less likely to win because the greater difference between your team could sting you*)

*unless his team is shite anyway

Gotta say your one of my favourite posters on the site. Very clear that you give a lot of effort in looking at things from different angles, and your opinions often serves as a realitycheck to popular opinion.

I agree that to much fuss is being made about ownership, but it does matter to some extent, or at the very least I do value it. When owning two or three captaincyoptions that look good, were you might expect one to Get 7-8pts and the other to Get 9-10pts, your better served with choosing the former if you know hes highly owned in the 10k (a representation of the "active players"), and if he also is fav in the captaincypolls.

As these situations dont come around very often, and your own judgement tells you that the difference wont be "great" , your better served with selecting based on ownership-data.

            Cheers Wesmantooth 🙂

I have to say I disagree, but that would be due to the part where I said "assuming you are better at picking players than your rival(s)". For me this is key.

Although, as I mentioned farther up this HT, I don't have faith in myself to predict some outcomes, such as "defensive form based on contextual factors such as player and club embarrassment", I do have faith in my ability to pick players and strategies based on form (my subjective view of a player or team's performance), stats, fixtures, etc. Or even if I don't have faith in myself, I feel like picking combinations of players and when/where to play the chips (including captaincy) is whole point of FPL, so I must place faith in myself in order to judge my ability compared to everyone else.

It also seems like the best strategy to win the game (OR 1) rather than simply achieve a high rank, the latter being more useful if you have a twitter handle and any income based around your FPL ranks and reputation. As I said above, on average I will do better to follow my own decisions (even if it's marginal as in your example) than to go with the crowd, assuming I am better than the crowd. And that's a risk I'm willing to take, because it's more enjoyable to me, and more rewarding when it goes right 😀

I totally Get behind that logic. I guess it comes down to how you "pick" your players. If your selectionmethod is solely based on eyetest and your perception of stats, than its all subjective. But if you base your assesment on further details, like bookies odds (Clean sheets, anytime goalscorer), its suddenly not. A lot of my decisions are based on the information gathered from bookies odds, and as many will know, those are the best "predictive tools" one can use. Sharp bookies will get their odds correct and let their margins eat up the stakes of those gambling.

Suddenly my assesment is no longer subjective, and therefore I should Consider ownership. Because if my part subjective part objective assesment leaves two players very close, I leave it up to chance/luck/variance whether the outcome benefits me or decapitates me.

I don't agree. You're using two different optics to measure good decision making rather than the single most important optic: points (or strictly speaking expected points). Whether it is correct to make the same decision as the crowd then simply boils down to whether the crowd has made a good decision.

      Fixtures over form form me.

I will captain Aguero vs Cardiff even if he's blanked three times in a row, over Salah vs Chelsea away, even if he's scored three times in a row.

It made bringing in Hazard very easy and benefiting from his two hauls before other's jumped in. It's why I'm partly nervous about Kane these next two game weeks. I want him in, but I just can't, and I fully expect him to come away with 3+ goals.

I believe quite strongly that this idea of 'form over fixtures' is fundamentally flawed and stifles creative and rewarding gameplay. So many players get completely ignored if they haven't scored decent points in a few weeks, but no decent player goes a season never scoring a goal, assist, etc.

Team and individual form in football does exist, but it's incredibly (and rapidly) cyclical. Being in and out of 'form' happens in blocks of a few weeks sometimes, not months.

To get ahead in this game you need to be predicting where the next outstanding team/player performance is coming from. It won't be surprise me in the slightest if Kane (C) turns out to be the best play for the next two weeks, purely based on fixtures. Last season I started without Kane and transferred him after 3 consecutive blanks, and gave him the armband. Why? Because he was playing a woeful looking Everton and I know Kane is not going on some ridiculous 8-week 'form' slump. He's going to score soon, I figured, so I went all in and he got a brace when most were ditching him.

It doesn't always go well of course, but the challenge is looking at the fixture swings and identifying who can exploit them. Previous form is probably my lowest priority, but expected short-term future form (based on all sorts of factors that are not as simple as whether or not he scored a goal last week) is my highest priority.

I think this is because people define "form" as FPL points on the board, and use FPL points on the board to predict FPL points on the board.

For me, form is simply how well a player is playing, and specifically how well they are playing in regards to FPL actions, such as shooting (which can result in goals and assists), dribbling (which can result in shooting or key passing, which can result in goals and assists), etc.

Most of this information currently comes from watching football, mostly highlights, but there are certainly already plenty of quantifyable metrics that can be plugged into your description of a player or team's "form".

If we say someone is "off form", we can picture a player losing the ball a lot, shooting and missing, running slowly, etc. Whether as a result of low confidence or lack of effort, it doesn't matter. The point is that the player is playing poorly (in your opinion), and unlikely to return FPL points (in your opinion), because he is not "in form". Your ability to spot this, and use this subjective information to inform good decisions is part of what makes a good manager.

Perhaps the term wouldn't be so fuzzy if we we considering a painting of an apple. What is the form of the apple? It's round. Round is a good shape for an apple. It has good form. What is the form of the painter? The brush strokes are continuous and create the feeling that this apple will taste nice. The artist is in good form. How about Harry Kane? He is looking lazy as balls, but he's started to get his head up and connect with his team mates. The way he strikes the ball is remeniscent of a time when he was banging in hattricks every week, which has nice been the case for weeks. He is about to come into good form.

(The harry Kane bit is pure fiction btw).

I think I'm a bit of an oddity here in that I almost never watch premier league football - not even MOTD. I look at form and fixtures and stats occasionally. So I'm super into FPL and I put loads of effort in but I can't run 'the eye test' on any players.

So ultimately stats are the king for me. There are only a so many key chances on target before one of them turns into a goal. There are only so few key chances conceded before they result in a clean sheet. I still think I'm pretty decent at this, but would I be better if I could form my own subjective opinions about players? Hard to tell!

Can't disagree with any of that. You're right, it's about the interpretation of 'form'. I couldn't care less about FPL points as my guide, and strangely enough my psychology often works the other way - when I see quality players have blanked for multiple weeks but I watch them play and I think they're still looking good, I'm as likely to transfer them in as an owner is likely to transfer them out. I guess I subscribe to argument that "he's due some returns" or "form is temporary, class is permanent".

A good example right now might be Eriksen. I don't own him and I never do, he's not my kind of player at that price point. However, if I did own him right now I would not get rid. Fixtures are incredible, he's nailed, and he's soooooo due attacking returns. Points are coming for Eriksen, I just feel it. FPL form in this instance is meaningless, unless you're convinced he's playing too deep to score, which is valid, but also why do you own him in the first place?

Re 2, I bang on and on about this but your whole squad, plus picking a captain every week (which often comes down to a coin toss) is enough of a differential.

If I said I own Salah, Hazard, Alonso, AWB, Robbo, Mendy, Richarlison, Fraser, many would say that my team is 'template'. However I have never owned Aguero, Mané or Mitrovic this season. I'm still in the top 9k by the way. So you can have a team that looks very similar to someones else's but just one or two different players and/or a different captain can result in a 20-40 point swing.

The wisdom of the crowd tends to be *fairly* accurate and it's worth remembering this. If a player is barely owned it is likely to be for a reason, and by going against the grain with maverick picks you forget the small ways in which your 'template' team differs from the template. Leveraging these differences every week is what creates a successful team, not jumping on the players you think are 'due' a haul or are being unfairly overlooked.

      1. MaxiRobriguez

But Salah, Hazard, Alonso, AWB, Robbo, Mendy, Rich and Fraser were all good picks because their fixtures were good, not because of the form. I owned 6/8 of those from GW1 (didn't start with Alonso and Hazard) and it wasn't particularly difficult to make those choices, nor was it difficult to make the call to bring in Hazard before he hauled, what with him being eased back into some easy fixtures.

They're template because they're scoring well, but they're scoring well because of fixtures. It's the likes of Neves, Pererya etc that shouldn't become template picks because there is a lower chance of continued returns. Personally I enjoyed watching people scramble to get Neves in.

This is a good post and you're right to highlight point 1 especially - many studies like the ones featured in Thinking Fast & Slow by Daniel Hahneman back up the fact that people will choose an answer they think is wrong if everybody else is picking it. But it contradicts point 2 a little because surely the highly owned players are an example of the herd? I guess maybe it could be caveated with "not having well owned players who do have the pedigree to hurt you".

On 3, form is 100% influenced by fixtures. Having an easy run can make any player's "form" look good, especially when I see people on here and even the scouts talking about teams and players on the up after a single good performance even when it's been preceded by 4-5 really poor ones.

Agree on your sidenote. I've thought Chelsea have looked weak defensively all season and have said so on here. Az seemed amazed at their results on the Scoutcast too. Their only CS's, HUD, BOU and WHU were lucky and all of those teams should have scored.

Lots of good stuff, but the thing about kanes conversion is of little value imo.

38 weeks of averaging 5 shots each game v 6 gameweeks of averaging 2.5.

Your last point about Salah is good

While your point on group thinking is certainly a valid one, i notice that in the same token you make an argument on ownership which in some ways also points to herd thinking. If logic is that if you pick low owned players and go maverick doesn´t make you a good FPL history, shouldn´t that first label also be labelled on them too? To me tthis group thinking thing is actually a twosided phenomena, it is often used to cover or pointing towards the mass or casuals, but to me this also is something going on in what one could call the inner circle´s, who often distance themselves from "the mass".

Point is, this herd theory is going on everywhere, not just in some quarters of society, it´s a common trait of what our society is based on, to some degree. Our individual decisions will always be in some regards dictated or influenced by our circumstances, the thing that differs is how oneself apply his or her own choice. Your example of Walcott for instance, yes it could be as you say but choosing him could be justified (or actually restricted) by price, fixtures and ones own teams pricestructure. I did´nt choose him for the price rise, i chose him because i saw Evertons fixtures as the best there were and i couldn´t afford Siggy. And i sure as hell didn´t pick him because everyone else did-).

The walcott point is a mockery considering unlike many, i didnt go with Walcott for gw4 despite being on a wildcard, instead bringing in gross for a -1 and injury.

I have a problem. Used my free transfer already but I still have Moura in the team.
After last night do we think he will be rested on the weekend?
    Would anyone be tempted by:-
    Alli (-4)
    Richa (-4)
I guess i'm just worried about a Lucas haul if he starts.

      Alonso, Robertson, Benett, (WanB), (Holebas)

Fe%# conventional wisdom. Usually pick wrong between McCarthy and Fabianski. Starting Fabianski this GW. With Deccie boy sweeping they can keep United out and even if they can't he's assured of a bucket of saves.

      Lol...
It’s funny tho, cause as we were up (1-0) in the match, I actually had a bad feeling about the league match, if we won the cup game...
Honestly feel like it was a better result for Liverpool! Now we’re hungry as hell to beat Chelsea in their house (and hopefully get our attackers on point!)
...but yeah, that Hazard goal prob gives him the current title of best in the EPL(at the moment)—credit where it’s due...
But on Saturday, Az & I will be proven right...cause you Never Walk Alone!

I’m looking for more detailed numbers if you know how to locate them.
My first season entering the game late on in 2011/12, I got around 100 points and ended up around 2.8m, so surely there must have been less than 3m players by the season’s END, while we will probably see 6m this year.
