Watchlist Update – Mendy back on our FPL defender radar

With the international break almost over, we have taken the time to update the defenders on our Watchlist.

There hasn’t been a great deal of change since our post-Gameweek 7 refresh, though there is one returning name that leaps out: Manchester City’s Benjamin Mendy (£6.2m).

Mendy takes the place of the unfortunate Aymeric Laporte (£5.7m) in fifth place, who has recorded four straight clean sheets for the reigning champions and is likely a safer route into the City backline than the fit-again full-back.

We can’t ignore the explosive potential of Mendy, however, particularly with Pep Guardiola’s troops next up against a Burnley side who have conceded more chances than any Premier League club this season, including a league-worst 24 opportunities from their right flank.

Southampton also visit the Etihad in Gameweek 11, but we’ve stopped short of a “favourable fixtures” tag for Mendy with Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United also to come over the next month.

A Fabian Delph (£5.3m)/Leroy Sane (£9.2m) partnership on the left flank remains an alternative option for Guardiola in the future, but since Mendy walked straight back into the team against Liverpool after recovering from injury and was an ever-present before getting sidelined, we don’t believe he warrants a “rotation risk” flag – yet.

Andrew Robertson (£6.3m) moves up to the top of our Watchlist for defence and now has a “favourable fixtures” tag to his name, given that Huddersfield Town, Cardiff City and Fulham are to face Liverpool before the November international break. No club has a better pairing of fixtures over the next two Gameweeks than Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The four highest-scoring defenders in FPL, indeed, rather unsurprisingly make up our top four on the Watchlist.

Marcos Alonso (£7.0m) hasn’t delivered an attacking return since Gameweek 4 but has compensated with clean sheets in two of those matches, so just about clings on to his “A” form rating.

Alonso and Chelsea have three home league fixtures in their next four outings, though with Manchester United the visitors to Stamford Bridge this weekend the Spanish left-back hasn’t been handed a positive or negative fixture tag.

Alonso’s underlying attacking numbers have unquestionably deteriorated over the last month, but the Chelsea man has been written off before and still retains the canny knack to deliver a monster haul after a period of dormancy. The next four fixtures will hopefully tell us if the drop-off in KPIs was merely a lull and not as a result of specific instruction from Maurizio Sarri.

Faith in the Fantasy community hasn’t wavered, either – Alonso’s ownership has increased after every round of fixtures this season and the Spanish international in fact rose in price again this week.

No player quite warrants an “A” form rating as much as Matt Doherty (£4.7m), who has delivered three double-digit hauls in the last four Gameweeks. We’ve elevated the newly capped Irish international up to third on our Watchlist, with four enticing-looking fixtures to come in the next half-dozen matches.

Doherty might be a season-keeper for a large percentage of Fantasy managers and would appear set to feature on our Watchlist for some time given the value he is providing at a still-reasonable £4.7m: no FPL defender has registered as many penalty box touches as the Wolves wing-back in 2018/19.

The return to fitness of Serge Aurier (£5.8m) means there is sufficient doubt to leave the “rotation risk” flag on Kieran Trippier (£6.3m), even if the Spurs right-back has started the last seven Premier League matches for the Lilywhites – the longest sequence of successive league starts that Trippier has managed in his three years in north London.

Trippier’s form rating remains unchanged after 22 FPL points in three Gameweeks.

The remaining five defenders in our top ten are all familiar names as they retain their places from the pre-Gameweek 8 Watchlist.

Shane Duffy (£4.5m), Ben Chilwell (£5.0m) and DeAndre Yedlin (£4.5m) all have “favourable fixtures” to come in the coming weeks and months, with their respective clubs sitting in the top three on our Season Ticker for the next Gameweeks.

The trio have contrasting forms, however, with Duffy very much the pick of the three with a clean sheet and three goal involvements in his last four Gameweeks.

Chilwell has yet to record a goal or assist in 2018/19 but only three defenders (Holebas, Trippier and Robertson) have created more chances than the Leicester full-back this campaign.

Yedlin gets an “up” arrow as Newcastle’s fixtures have taken a huge turn for the better: the Magpies now don’t face one member of the “big six” until Boxing Day. The American full-back has created more chances for his team-mates than the rest of the Magpies’ backline combined and is available at an attractive price, though Jamaal Lascelles’ (£4.8m) price is heading in the right direction from a bargain-lover’s point of view and he may soon enter our thinking.

Were it not for Everton’s inability to regularly keep clean sheets and some awful away fixtures ahead, Lucas Digne (£4.8m) would be higher than ninth on our Watchlist. Only Harry Maguire (£5.5m) has had more shots among defenders over the last four Gameweeks, with the French full-back also registering six key passes during that period.

Digne’s game is well rewarded on the Bonus Points System, with the former Barcelona defender impressively registering a Baseline BPS every 5.4 minutes.

Jose Holebas (£4.9m) is suspended for Gameweek 9 and has amassed only one point over the last four matches but just about makes it into tenth place with some enticing fixtures against Huddersfield, Newcastle and Southampton to enjoy upon his return from a one-match ban.

Having averaged only 2.2 points over the last five Gameweeks and with an away trip to Chelsea to come in Gameweek 9, Luke Shaw (£5.1m) drops out of our thinking for the time being.

Our summary of the movers and shakers on the midfielders’ and forwards’ Watchlists will follow later in the week.

How's this WC looking (with 5 pen takers*) ?

    Fabianski
    TAA/Robertson/Doherty
    Sterling/Maddison/Siggurdson*/Hazard*
    Aguero*/Vardy*/Murray*

    (Hamer/Brooks/Duffy/Bednarek)

Andy mocked David's transfer on the Scoutcast but clearly didn't understand what he meant. I'm sure Andy thought David said he was taking Patricio out for 2 weeks and then getting him back. He meant he's benching Patricio and playing Fabianski ahead of him for two weeks. Nothing wrong with the move.

    RP since bottomed.

Only things not pointing to City destroying Burnley is that even though Burnley are top for shots in the box and total shots conceded (last 4 GWs) - they are 9th best for shots in the box conceded (and mid table for Big Chances conceded). Historically Burnley tends to park the bus well as well, and Burnley's defense is known for blocking shots (Dyche insists on it from his players).

Burnley has played wol BOU car HUD in that time, where they have scored 3 goals. Alternatively City have played FUL car BHA liv in the last four, where they have scored 10 (BUT 8 of those 10 were against FUL and car, who didn't play very defensively - the MCI vs bur game is most likely to resemble the MCI vs bri game in terms of tactics).

So, a case can be made either way.

    A) Since Burnley have conceded the most shots in the league against poor/decent teams, City will blow them away with 5+ goals
    B) Since Burnley are known to be resilient when "parking the bus", they wont ship more than 2-3 goals

Additionally, it is interesting that ManU are 3rd worst for shots on target conceded in the last 3 GWs, and Cardiff are awful when looking at shots in the box conceded, total shots conceded and big chanced conceded. Maybe Hazard or Mitrovic are the best captain choices fixture wise after all.

I do think Hazard could get another double-figure haul this week. If the players have truly turned on Mourinho, this'll be a drubbing as they fail to execute his tactical plan to stop Hazard.

I dont think they have, I mean I expect them to be profesionals.

Still, I wouldnt be surprised if Hazard scores amd gets bonus 3.

Last GW showed they didn't turn on Mourinho. No way they were going to comeback from 2-0 if they wanted him out.

Just posted on your previous post but - Don't understand this part:
"...Burnley are top for shots in the box and total shots conceded (last 4 GWs) - they are 9th best for shots in the box conceded..."

          My fault! I contradicted myself.

Top for.shots in the box and total shots (as in the most shots)

9th lowest shots on target conceded (again, they are poor looking at shots in the box conceded)! That was the point.

Gotcha. Couple of issues with that - for sake of discussion not saying necessarily right/wrong
              1) Only considering last 4 games (wol, BOU, car, HUD). Ok they had Europa but still the easier fixture split.
              2) Filtering to away games for SoT looks worse whatever the time period.

There seems to be a simmering rivalry beginning to emerge from David and AZ much of which is emanating from twitter during match days (disclaimer: i am not on twitter i am just getting that vibe from the scoutcasts i have watched this season)

This is a good thing and league and manager rivalry is one of the most fun things about the game.It is a throwback to the early days of the scoutcast with Mark vs Granville,we just need Joe and Andy to stoke those flames a bit more.

Was all set to WC in gw10 if salah was ruled out as I was planning to do salah > sterling in gw9 and then WC salah back. Suggestions now?

            Patricio — foster
Alonso Robbo Doherty shaw — awb
Salah Maddison Richarlison — kamarassa Stephens
            King Kane Kun

            A: shaw >> 5m def and then next gw Stephens/Kane >> hazard/Jiménez (-4)

B: Save FT and do Stephens/Kane >> hazard/Jiménez without a hit next gw

C: shaw >> Morrison (punt) and then WC in gw10 to bring in hazard, arnie,Mitro

If you're interested in thoughts on Sterling or de Bruyne and haven't seen the Scoutcast yet: here are some of Joe's opinions I transcribed from toaday's cast - just for fun. Tuesday night, innit.

Feel free to comment your thoughts on the pair. Or just scroll past if you're not interested 🙂

[On Sterling] "Is he worth that money? Basically, yes. That's the short version.

Here's the really long version with some stats: Successful dribbles are up this season. Take-ons are up. He's involved in more goals. His baseline bonus is up. He's getting 10.3 a match this season; just 6.4 last season. That is because his pass completion is up. He's also getting those bonus points for recovering the ball more. His crossing is up. In fact, he's making more than double the number of crosses and creating more chances. He's taking more corners too: 1.3 on average, so he's taking a corner a game or so, compared to pretty much none, 0.2, again, last season. Penalty area touches are up, too. Shots on target are up. The big chances are down, at the moment, and shots in the box, down as well a little bit. So in short, he's become a better all-round attacking midfielder with more assist potential and still a very strong goal threat. He's basically upped his game as a creator. 18 goals last season, and that's a goal every 144 minutes. 4 goals this season. That's a goal every 148 minutes. So he's matching last season's goal output, more or less. 11 assists last season. That's 1 every 235 minutes. Just 2 assists so far, but that's an assist every 296 minutes. But all of those things I've just been reading out suggests that there's going to be more assists for him.

I had a little look at what we're comparing to others, as well, so 'who are you comparing him with?'. So, for some, you'll be looking at maybe, to get him in, you're probably going to be looking at removing someone like Mane or Salah or, for the few people that've got Sanchez, perhaps, or even Sane, who might be a little bit more of a rotation risk now. So these are the kind of premium ones. And he's top for chances created amongst all of those lot, and he's doing really well for goal attempts. He's, you know, just behind Salah and Hazard, who are the top amongst those group, there. So in short, why am I avoiding him? I have got absolutely no idea. I'm awaiting Salah news. [...] but I'd be tempted. I'd be very tempted to get Sterling in. He's got everything" *exhales in astonishment and adoration* "Yeah" *shrugs*

            ***later that day***

"Well I like de Bruyne as well for all those reasons I mentioned about Sterling. It's because there's that broad range of points, so it's not like you're just relying on goals or just assists or just a bonus magnet. He's a bit of everything. And that's the same with de Bruyne as well. It's a real tough one. I can kind of see the patient approach, and I do agree: Salah goes for one of them, if Salah was to go. But with de Bruyne, I was just looking at last season because we haven't had a chance, really, to see him this season, and last season: 94 goal attempts. Amongst Man City players, that was joint top with Aguero, so he's matching him for shots, and he got 8 goals out of that and 16 assists as well. And he created 105 chances. So the next nearest was David Silva with 61. Those kind of stats are just superhuman ones that you have to pay attention to. For the same reason, unfortunately, you also have to pay attention to Aguero who's been top for goal attempts over the last 4, and you also have to pay attention to his 50% ownership, and I was reading today on Twitter that it's actually a bit higher because about a million FPL managers are no longer FPL managers: they're just completely inactive. So that means that Aguero amonst active managers is somewhere around the 52-53% mark. So that says to me, he's top captain choice. He's going to have an effective ownership, particularly amongst top 10,000 of a huge amount, so I think he's a more important player to get in. But it is really frustrating: we're talking about Sterling and de Bruyne, and Sterling in particular's season, he's showing it, and *sighs* I can't get him in. And it's annoying. People are almost having a go at us: "why haven't you got... why aren't you talking about- why aren't you even talking about him?", well we're talking about him now, so we've come half the way, there."

That last part was my favourite. 😆 https://youtu.be/HhPNUasyZT0?t=1181

The thing is that although Sterling's numbers are good this could be because of KDB's absents and that is about to change.

I don't know the man or anything but from years of listing to him and watching how he plays the game it is oblivious that he was never going to go for Sterling over Aguero because given the choice he nearly always goes for the dullard approach it is just his style of management.

personally i find it laughable that kdb could negatively affect Sterling, arguably the best passer of a football in the league

The negative effect could perhaps be minutes, but not much of an effect. I think David proposed on the Scoutcast that Sterling could be afforded a rest more easily with KDB back to soak up some pressure to create chances. I'm not sure I agree, personally, though, as I can't see Pep trying to find a balace of creativity vs non-creativity. If Sterling and KDB are both creating chances, then they'll just score get more chances (and more goals), which I think is you're kind of thinking too (forgive me if I'm wrong).

Still having another playing in the squad can always have a little effect on another attacking player's minutes, but shouldn't be so much to worry about imo

Sure. He was getting a little emotional about not having Sterling in his team though. It was fun to watch. 🙂 I would expect he'd only buy if Salah's confirmed out.

I plan doing Fraser->KDB soon, keeping Mane and Hazard.
There has to be some attacking cover from Liverpool.

Not sure I agree with that. If there are better options to Salah and Mane, I would rather have the better options, and I don't want Shaqiri just for one or two gameweeks.

I'm current;y torn between getting Mane + KDB or just Sterling + keeping Pogba for the time being. Waiting for this blasted IB to come to a close.

Yeah it has been a terrible IB FPLwise. Injuries or rumours of everywhere.
I may need a couch to hide behind going cityless and Kaneless, but I feel good with Hazard Mane Laca, until KDB joins the team.

I agree. Having gone off Aguero due to limited minutes, I wouldn't get Sterling.
City just have too many good attacking players, enabling Pep to rotate at will.

Maybe not if you had the transfer to spare and wanted to dump someone like AWB who you had no intention of playing anyway but then again you might snooker yourself down the road from trebling up on Liverpool nailed assets which you should always leave to door open to.

I have a hard time seeing Sterling benched after the game against Spain. Yes there is always a risk for rotation in City but I think KDB will start on bench if named at all...

It's more about Sane, Silva, Silva, Mahrez, Jesus, and even Mendy, than it is about KDB, though isn't it?

                6 years, 16 days ago

Could be right, but assuming KDB plays when fit there's about 3 positions for Sterling, Sane, Mahrez, Bernardo, Silva (fewer if Jesus/Aguero up front). Pretty unlikely they all get rotated around Sterling being nailed for PL games.

Just saw that ridiculous Griezmann goal from earlier. I can comprehend just about any type of goal in football, but I just can't get my head around how you can control the pace, direction and therefore the trajectory of an oncoming football using your head, especially when it's pinged at you without the time for you to readjust your body. I was never good at it, myself. Absolutely Ludicrous! 😀

I did, however, score plenty of goals like that on Olympic Soccer (1996) on PS1

Tell that to both FIFA and UEFA.

The man is an outstanding footballer, evident by the goals he scores for starters.
