Has premium defender Marcos Alonso outlived his FPL value?

Marcos Alonso (£7.0m) is now without an attacking return in Fantasy Premier League since Gameweek 4.

Despite proving a hugely popular figure, there has been a drop off in his offensive potential in recent weeks.

In this members’ piece, we’ve taken a look at whether or not his owners should be worried about his place in their squads.

    Morning All,

Happy Monday, making my way on the train from London to Cardiff! Fabulous weather!!

    Right so Mr.Vardy:

    a) Save FT and Keep
    B) lacazette In
    C) Mitro In

Wont be making any other changes or subs as used WC last week.

This. Why the hell would you transfer out Vardy now with his fixtures? Most wildcarders will be bringing him in!

    On WC, current team:

    Patricio, Fab
    Alonso, Robbo, Perreira, Doherty, WB
    Haz, Siggy, Maddison, Fraser, Obiang
    Kun, Lacazette, Firmino

    Thoughts?

      Few things;

I think go with Mendy over Alonso especially this week!

I like Kun this week but Kane for rest of season is better option!

I would also downgrade Lacca or firmino and upgrade to city midfielder for this week!

I think the point of a WC is to be thinking beyond just "this week".
For me the defence is solid, I would downgrade either laca or firmino and upgrade one of your mids to Mane. I know he isn't on fire at the moment but he allows easy access to KDB, Erikson, or Ali and if any of those guys starts firing you don't wanna miss the boat.

2 x 9.something strikers is a structural mistake that is uncalled for imo

Easily afforded with no Salah. Nothing wrong with a power front 3.

102 million team here (not too bad, not title winning either) - no Salah, front three of Arnie Hammer, Kane, Aguero... Woof!

Depends if you are happy having pretty much only one natural replacement for two 9m strikers. What are the chances that 2, let alone 3 will be fit and perform. That's a problem for me. Decisions like that over the course of a season cost FTs and hits

If you want people to pay attention to the content of your posts, let alone be swayed by your points, it would help to remove the hyperbole and just engage with the points themselves.

Anyway, see my reasoning above. You may think it's over the top but these kind of decisions add up over the course of a season.

Not a big fan of this to be honest - there are way too many excellent cheap strikers this year to not take advantage. Wilson, King, Ings, Jimenez, Arnie, Mitro... They offer much better value than Lacazette & Firmino imho.

Mendy & Richarlison are also players you’ll likely be tearing up your team to fit in soon enough. Not having at least Mané if not Salah ditto.

This just looks like minimum three or four wasted FT’s waiting to happen.

      1. Eden Wizard
        • 5 Years

It's an alternate strategy, wouldn't say it was wrong at all. Just because it's not groupthink.

        Agreed Mendy & Richy.

Disagree, you could be tearing your team up for Laca & Bobby in two weeks 🙂

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years
          5 years, 6 months ago

I don’t think anyone would disagree that Laca & Bobby won’t score goals. They just won’t score ENOUGH goals to make up the ~5.0 price difference between having them & having two from the pool of strikers above.

Combine that with the aforementioned lack of Mendy, Richarlison & Liverpool attack & I am just not a fan at all.

It’s giving your team unnecessary handicaps and wasting a wildcard into the bargain.

Can I offer some advice, limited as I may be at FPL, about Duffy.
2 goals 2 assists in 720 minutes. A point every 25 minutes. Not bad eh?
        Well:
Over the whole of last year he scored 100 points at 1 point every 33 minutes.
Brighton have a shocking away record and have 5 away in the next 8 with CHE WOL and LEI their home games.
Does it look like many clean sheets are on the horizon?
12 points have come from 1 game this year at Soton (40% total points tally). I would not want to plan decisions over that situation.
3 Wolves players at the similar prices or cheaper in a far better team and the players in question are playing like wingers.
Most will have 2 premium defenders in their sides so playing 3 4 3 have you stopped to think how often you might pick him in 1st 11.
Newcastle have a far better run of fixtures for a longer period with the majority at home. Is a defender from them a better choice?
Let us say there is an overall improvement in his play but is it not a bandwagon situation we are looking at?

        1. MTPockets
            5 years, 6 months ago

Alonso lack of goal threat and scoring less points has nothing to do with new manager , playing a different formation or not been as attacking as previous years
No it's simply down to the fact that I got him in when things were going good and broke him. Happens every season. Bad news is I don't plan to get rid just yet.
When I do things will improve immensely for him. You'll know I did when he scores his next goal.

For someone who has essentially been living under a rock for the last few days (i.e. me), do I gather the general consensus is wait to hear extent of Salah injury? Did it look bad?

For the first time ever with my trigger fingers I have 2 FT's with no plans to use one.

Is there anything doing to use one before it burns?

I think so? Only been rested one game and on so many set pieces. I'm holding fire until he's properly being rotated.

Saw a post earlier on how many Dream team players people had so thought I would review the current Dream team.

            Ederson (43)
            Alonso (60) | Doherty (49) | Robertson (49)
            Hazard (74) | Sterling (50) | Fraser (48) | Mane (48)
            Aguero (52) | Wilson (49) | Lacazette (48)

            Total cost: £89.3 | Total points: 570

This team is currently not affordable with £10.7 remaining to purchase an additional 4 players; 1 x keeper, 2 x defenders and 1 x midfielders. You would need around £16.5 minimum to fill these positions, so some downgrades are needed, especially if you want an improved bench.

Goalkeeper: Ederson is certainly a good keeper that will do well in points but a cheaper keeper is often not that far behind by the end of the season. Ederson is £5.7 so you could save £1.1 by getting Patricio who has scored just 2 points less (41). As rotating keepers generally leads to points on the bench you can choose for a £4.0 keeper to save money.

Defense: Attacking premium defenders seem to be a must this season. Despite the recent dip Alonso (60) is still outscoring everyone but Hazard (74) so far. Would suggest patience. Robertson (49) is also scoring very well, again beating all other positions apart from Hazard, Sterling and Aguero. Doherty (49) offers a cut price route into a good defensive team and offers a lot of attacking threat, now scoring the same as Robertson! With Bennett and AWB at £4.2 and £4.3 respectively, you can afford to invest in the premium options.

Midfield: Hazard (74) is a must, expect this to be one of his highest scoring seasons and he is already leading the field in points. Sterling (50) is actually very much overlooked due to his price, with Salah struggling he is very much someone I am looking at. Fraser (48) remains a very good budget option, although patience will be required when he has poor fixtures, also expect Maddison or Sigurdsson will overtake soon as they are both on 42 points, so 6 points down. Mane (48) has dipped in output but currently is the highest scoring value pick from the Liverpool attackers, another Salah downgrade option.

Fowards: Aguero (52) is the top pick for points in City which is one of the most attacking teams, so for me remains in my team. Wilson (49) is doing great with the fixtures but these are turning soon as per Fraser, exit plan maybe required and mine is Arnautovic. Lacazette (48) is looking like a great choice too, just behind Wilson but much more likely to sustain his output, but at £9.6 he is difficult to fit into your team, again the Salah downgrade would make this easier.

TL;DR - I think a lot of the dream team players are worthy of being in your team, now and in the future. Attacking defenders are currently more than holding their own. The Bournemouth players might drop out of the dream team in the coming weeks, so players like Maddison, Sigurdsson and Arnautovic need to be monitored. Some expensive players like Sterling and Lacazette are worthy of investment if we are brave enough to drop Salah, otherwise the team structure could be an issue.

Are Bournemouth's fixtures really that bad?

Southampton, Fulham and Newcastle are certainly not bad fixtures. Newcastle need to win games against sides like Bournemouth so are less likely to go fully defensive. And they play MUN and ARS, neither side has been good defensively either so hardly difficult from an FPL point of view - now its still likely they lose both games but without scoring? Unlikely.

Now after the Huddersfield game I can see them being worth dropping because GW16 to 20 is a genuinely hard run.

Indeed, no need to immediately jump off of them but it is reasonable to expect their output will drop. Choice is to have patience and hold them through this period or bring in another player with better fixtures. For me Wilson -> Arnautovic is in the planning GW11 as I expect Arnautovic to outscore Wilson from that period onwards.

Was looking at 3 transfers this gwk. Arnie, Salah and one of Mendy/VVD/TAA looked like the picks.

If Salah is out, would you make the same moves but bring in Mane, or just look elsewhere completely?
