Watchlist Update – Mendy back on our FPL defender radar

With the international break almost over, we have taken the time to update the defenders on our Watchlist.

There hasn’t been a great deal of change since our post-Gameweek 7 refresh, though there is one returning name that leaps out: Manchester City’s Benjamin Mendy (£6.2m).

Mendy takes the place of the unfortunate Aymeric Laporte (£5.7m) in fifth place, who has recorded four straight clean sheets for the reigning champions and is likely a safer route into the City backline than the fit-again full-back.

We can’t ignore the explosive potential of Mendy, however, particularly with Pep Guardiola’s troops next up against a Burnley side who have conceded more chances than any Premier League club this season, including a league-worst 24 opportunities from their right flank.

Southampton also visit the Etihad in Gameweek 11, but we’ve stopped short of a “favourable fixtures” tag for Mendy with Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United also to come over the next month.

A Fabian Delph (£5.3m)/Leroy Sane (£9.2m) partnership on the left flank remains an alternative option for Guardiola in the future, but since Mendy walked straight back into the team against Liverpool after recovering from injury and was an ever-present before getting sidelined, we don’t believe he warrants a “rotation risk” flag – yet.

Andrew Robertson (£6.3m) moves up to the top of our Watchlist for defence and now has a “favourable fixtures” tag to his name, given that Huddersfield Town, Cardiff City and Fulham are to face Liverpool before the November international break. No club has a better pairing of fixtures over the next two Gameweeks than Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The four highest-scoring defenders in FPL, indeed, rather unsurprisingly make up our top four on the Watchlist.

Marcos Alonso (£7.0m) hasn’t delivered an attacking return since Gameweek 4 but has compensated with clean sheets in two of those matches, so just about clings on to his “A” form rating.

Alonso and Chelsea have three home league fixtures in their next four outings, though with Manchester United the visitors to Stamford Bridge this weekend the Spanish left-back hasn’t been handed a positive or negative fixture tag.

Alonso’s underlying attacking numbers have unquestionably deteriorated over the last month, but the Chelsea man has been written off before and still retains the canny knack to deliver a monster haul after a period of dormancy. The next four fixtures will hopefully tell us if the drop-off in KPIs was merely a lull and not as a result of specific instruction from Maurizio Sarri.

Faith in the Fantasy community hasn’t wavered, either – Alonso’s ownership has increased after every round of fixtures this season and the Spanish international in fact rose in price again this week.

No player quite warrants an “A” form rating as much as Matt Doherty (£4.7m), who has delivered three double-digit hauls in the last four Gameweeks. We’ve elevated the newly capped Irish international up to third on our Watchlist, with four enticing-looking fixtures to come in the next half-dozen matches.

Doherty might be a season-keeper for a large percentage of Fantasy managers and would appear set to feature on our Watchlist for some time given the value he is providing at a still-reasonable £4.7m: no FPL defender has registered as many penalty box touches as the Wolves wing-back in 2018/19.

The return to fitness of Serge Aurier (£5.8m) means there is sufficient doubt to leave the “rotation risk” flag on Kieran Trippier (£6.3m), even if the Spurs right-back has started the last seven Premier League matches for the Lilywhites – the longest sequence of successive league starts that Trippier has managed in his three years in north London.

Trippier’s form rating remains unchanged after 22 FPL points in three Gameweeks.

The remaining five defenders in our top ten are all familiar names as they retain their places from the pre-Gameweek 8 Watchlist.

Shane Duffy (£4.5m), Ben Chilwell (£5.0m) and DeAndre Yedlin (£4.5m) all have “favourable fixtures” to come in the coming weeks and months, with their respective clubs sitting in the top three on our Season Ticker for the next Gameweeks.

The trio have contrasting forms, however, with Duffy very much the pick of the three with a clean sheet and three goal involvements in his last four Gameweeks.

Chilwell has yet to record a goal or assist in 2018/19 but only three defenders (Holebas, Trippier and Robertson) have created more chances than the Leicester full-back this campaign.

Yedlin gets an “up” arrow as Newcastle’s fixtures have taken a huge turn for the better: the Magpies now don’t face one member of the “big six” until Boxing Day. The American full-back has created more chances for his team-mates than the rest of the Magpies’ backline combined and is available at an attractive price, though Jamaal Lascelles’ (£4.8m) price is heading in the right direction from a bargain-lover’s point of view and he may soon enter our thinking.

Were it not for Everton’s inability to regularly keep clean sheets and some awful away fixtures ahead, Lucas Digne (£4.8m) would be higher than ninth on our Watchlist. Only Harry Maguire (£5.5m) has had more shots among defenders over the last four Gameweeks, with the French full-back also registering six key passes during that period.

Digne’s game is well rewarded on the Bonus Points System, with the former Barcelona defender impressively registering a Baseline BPS every 5.4 minutes.

Jose Holebas (£4.9m) is suspended for Gameweek 9 and has amassed only one point over the last four matches but just about makes it into tenth place with some enticing fixtures against Huddersfield, Newcastle and Southampton to enjoy upon his return from a one-match ban.

Having averaged only 2.2 points over the last five Gameweeks and with an away trip to Chelsea to come in Gameweek 9, Luke Shaw (£5.1m) drops out of our thinking for the time being.

Our summary of the movers and shakers on the midfielders’ and forwards’ Watchlists will follow later in the week.

If you don't want another Liverpool attacker, I would make that transfer given the clean sheet potential over the next few weeks

You may as well save for the simple reason that you would have to bench Bennett at home to watford which may not be wise

    International friendlies are SO stupid.
And I'm not even talking from an FPL manager perspective.
It basically just injures players and the results mean absolutely nothing.

Not too bad but inflexible. One injury messes up team badly. Four captaincy options is also a bit too much.

I was merely basing my decision on that midfield trio but now that i see zaha also in your team then wildcarding now may make sense. Aguero for kane, possibly firmino instead of mane. I know it is only a broken finger but surely he can not be as committed as normal for a handful of games at least. It will probably be in a cast so he might be safe enough with it. May as well get mendy in also. Hazard is a safer bet than salah. I know it is the reverse of what you had planned til now. I am in the salah camp..... no hazard hurting but may as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb at this stage. Cmon salah....

In that case you just fall behind those who have aguero and sterling together, and either salah or mane should get fewer points thans sterling in that scenario. Disagree with that idea

Literally like folding AA preflop in poker because you dont want to take the 20% chance to lose.

Yeah I suppose the difference is that AA preflop has a tangible probability attached to it, where the player cannot be at fault for the decision to fold pre-flop. In FPL, I guess the idea is that people are giving a certain proportion of responsibility to make a decision to the "wisdom of the crowd". At least, that's the onlt merit I can see in it: the fact that you expect the popular vote to outscore your own vote.

However, most people argue about ownership for the reason you allude to, because they don't want to take the chance to lose, regardless of how likely it is.

In other words the probability isn't set, nor tangilble, and people may want to reduce human error in calculating that probability by copying others.

Yes there is a difference in that there are actual maths that can be calculated in poker. But if Joe thinks Sterling will score more points than Aguero he has to work from there. And with that assumption, picking Aguero instead out of fear is a poor move that doesnt maximize his expected points.

I dont know what exactly he said though, didnt listen today. But if he was adamant that Sterling would score more and still adviced that he would pick Kun if on WC, then that has to be a wrong decision mathematically.

You are being deliberately difficult. If (like Deulofail says) Joe said he thinks Sterling will score more points than Aguero, and stilll picks Aguero just because he has higher ownership, then he is making a mathematical mistake. We all base our decisions on the hypothetical value we assign to players over the next stretches of gameweeks. If Joe assigns 6 points per million to Sterling and 5 ppm to Aguero and still picks Aguero, hes making a mistake. Even if he assigns 6.0001 to Sterling and 6.0 to Aguero, hes making a mistake.

If he doesnt trust his own judgment and wants to go full "wisdom of the crowd" then he might as well make a template team from the top 10k and not think at all (which will probably be a very good strategy, but that is besides the point).

The discussion is about what to do when you "clearly believe" one player will score more, but the alternative has a massive ownership. That you believe its a tossup isnt relevant here. What would you do if you clearly thought player A was more valuable than player B (at similar price), but player B had a massive ownership while player A was a differential?

I’m just saying when it’s two players of that level, no one can “clearly believe” that one will score more than another. It’s just an educated guess, that’s all.

So Joe is just talking bollocks when he says he believes Sterling will score more then? Whats the point of talking about who you believe will score more if you will just revert to the template pick anyway out of fear. If there was a rational reason to believe that A would score more than B then I’d get A but this is not one of those cases. I have no idea who will score more over, say, the next few GWs and nor does Joe, you or anyone else.

What determines when a manager is certain that one option is better than another though? That is subjective. If you think its a tie then by all means stick with the higher owned option. But if someone believes after considering all available information that Sterling is a better pick then he should pick Sterling regardless of ownership.

But to which extent. If its not 50/50 but Lets say 45/55 is it then enough to go with the lesser owned option. If that was my perception im not sure i would. Because given that chance plays its part, I might deem the risk to great if my assesment dont materialize.

Tbh its quite annoying that he just came into the discussion with an opinion (Sterling and Aguero are inseparably close options) that literally had nothing to do with the opening post. The thread is about what do if you believe that Aguero and Sterling ARE separable. That was the premise. Numb ignored it, and continued to ignore it when it was pointed out.

Ha, I can solve this, I didn't say Sterling will score more points than Aguero. I said Sterling had a good spread of potential points, bonus, assists and goals. But I also said Aguero is excellent.

So the initial comment from Deulofail is based on his interpretation of what I said not actually what I said.

There's no way I can say sterling will score more than Aguero - because I didn't say it.

I can say both are great options and also point out that Aguero is mega owned.

Blimey, what alot of fuss over nothing. 🙂

Originally it said "Joe clearly seems to think..." but I edited it down because of pressure from people (you included) to get me to write fewer words.

I think the word 'clearly' indicates it's an interpretation, anyway. Without it, I would be stating something as fact, but the qualification imples it's not a fact imo. I also said 'thinks', which I think is obviously just a personal reaction to what I was currently listening to on the podcast, otherwise I'd have schosen the word 'said'.

Besides, it's just a headline, I would be happy to acknowledge I'm not a mind reader in the discussion if we were actually able to have one. I wouldn't constantly claim that Joe knows or does not know something as part of my argument, especially since my topic of discussion was about the (non-) importance of ownership and not so much about Joe, himself.

Some people are determined to make things personal, and everyone else just laps up the drama, and revels in picking a side (which has nothing to do with the content on the page). Why not just judge the posts in isolation and reply based on the quality of the argument or the joke. I agree and disagree with everyone depending on what they said. I don't just check the username or grav and automatically pick a side or decide to laugh or not. I think it's time you did the same and actually engage, instead of reducing things to personal feuds so frequently. It's much more rewarding that way. I believe in you.

Waste of money on the bench imo. A good bench is good, but a good bench can be good and cheap with the current pool of players imo

If you look at Everton and wolves fixtures I’m not so sure it’s a waste of money to have a strong bench.

Anyway what’s your thoughts on Mane which is the point of my question...

Playing with a broken thumb?? Hardly right?

      TAA to Duffy.
      And I would play 3-4-3

Double Liverpool defense is a must have for me with those upcoming fixtures...

So that means one or two of Richy, Maddison, Mitrovic, Arnautovic on the bench each week... Better to have money in the bank for future use imo

Ye Richarlisons away fixtures are terrible but his home ones are sweet!

Maybe I should downgrade sone of them and upgrade Mane > Salah ....

If choosing – 3-5-2 with Richarlison, or 4-3-3/4-3-3 with Murray? Thinking of Kane>Agüero and an additional -4 for another player. Current team is:

    Ederson
Steve Cook - Alonso - Robertson - Doherty
    Salah - Hazard - Fraser - Maddison
    Kane - Mitrovic
    (Hamer - AWB - Stephens* - Kamara*)
