Lets be honest its bloomin’ cold in Blighty at the moment. Whilst the majority can sit tight at home wrapped in blankets with a hot drink, many hardy souls still brave their local grounds to watch and support their teams whatever the weather. For them the inconvience of a cold nose is overidden by the passion for their team. However sometimes the weather becomes so bad that games simply cannot take place no matter how much the fans want them to.

In the past the problem was the fact that pitches would freeze over meaning they became unplayable. Advances in undersoil heating has meant that this is less of an issue for the majority of Premier League clubs these days. Indeed Fulham, who were notorious for not having undersoil heating, had it installed over the summer. One team who still live in the dark ages with in this area is unsurprisingly Blackpool who, if you will remember, had issues getting their ground up to spec for the start of the season. Unfortunately this could have a serious impact on our Fantasy Football teams.

Blackpool’s next three fixtures include games against Manchester United and Tottenham, games which would likely provide potential captain choices. In the past the concern for a captain would be if he didn’t play you would just get zero points multiplied to zero. Thankfully now, like it or loath it, with the Emergency captain strategy function this is no longer an issue. It does, however, mean that with the cold weather playing havoc with the fixture list, players should keep a careful eye on who their potential substitute captain is.

Blackpool’s fixtures are by no means the only one players should keep an eye out on. Last season for example Wigan Athletic, who had worked furiously all week to ensure access to the DW Stadium was safe for supporters, had to call off their match against Aston Villa after their undersoil heating broke down. Elsewhere clubs, worried about the safety of fans around the ground, have been known to call games off. A point Gary Lineker picked up on last season

‘It is not the fault of the clubs. Because of the icy roads and car parks, they are probably terrified of getting sued if someone slips over on the way to the game. It’s a sign of the times we live in. The irony is that undersoil heating has helped the pitches but because there is less common sense these days in allowing fans to decide for themselves if they want to go to the game, we still have a large number of postponements.’

Situations like this are uncontrollable and there is little more we can do as FPL manager’s than keep a careful eye on updates on Fantasy Football Scout and the local clubs websites. Caution over transfers, which is usually advised, is therefore even more important at this time of year.

I remember last season I was affected by the snow and it cost me my place in the FPL cup. I was one point behind my opponent in the league with Lee of Bolton to play away at Wigan. Surely he’s get more than one point and i’d cruise into the next round? what happened? yep, the game was called off. Its ok i thought, i’ve got subs to come in. Guess who my sub was – one Michael Turner who’d been sent off that weekend. I ended up losing the cup game by 3 points all because of health and safety concerns around the ground. The pitch was fine but apparently the roads weren’t. Thanks a lot Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council.

There were concerns around todays game between Newcastle and Chelsea and thankfully Sky Sports News provided ample updates on the status of the game. That was not before a number of people on the Fantasy Football Scout forums discussed and worried over the likelihood of the game being called off. There is genuinely no better place to keep up to date with potential games being called off than the Scout boards and the Scout Twitter though, so make sure you keep visiting to find out potential postponements.

All in all the advice is to keep careful attention to potential games which could be affected, Newcastle, Sunderland and Wigan have been notorious in the past for game cancellation as well as ensuring that you keep up to date with your Emergency captain. Fingers crossed no games will be called off, but at least we have the consolation of potential double game week in the future. Every Cloud etc.

I did Fabs-> Cahill myself this week. Worked out pretty well in the end. I'm also making sure that I have enough money on the side so I can get Fabs whenever I want him back. And don't get arshavin. I believe this week was his first double digit haul all season so it's not worth the money

Apparently. Portsmouth and Fulham were the only ones last year. Portsmouth went down and Fulham have had it installed. I'd assume West Brom and Newcastle would have it.

But Wigan's broke, and loads more games were postponed due to crowd safety around the grounds.

Amazing how quickly things can change

Having to use all transfers on midfielders instead of defenders where its needed

Thought i had great midfield of fab vdv nani nolan adam

first fab went for nasri now van der aart and nolan on the sick list just when i want to sell coleman and drogba.

First time since start that i really feel like i need a wildcard , but it gone

I wouldn't feel I needed a wildcard even then. Coleman will see some more action - Everton have been worse without him. Drogba will come good. He's got Arsenal in 4gws time and he loves scoring against us!

VDV and Nolan are the more pressing issues. Also I think Adam is one yellow away from a suspension, there's another worry for you!

      Wildcard?

Start with the midfield. Check VdV's injury and get him out if it's more than 2 weeks. Fabregas otherwise.

Defense... Coleman has to go, and then look at upgrading Gohouri.

Thats my thinking also, wildcard gone long ago, but I am willing to do 2 x double transfers over the next few weeks..

As much as i want to pull the trigger, i need to see who is out for longer either VDV or Fab...I'm thinking either--
        VDV-> Nasri and Coleman->Konchesky
        or
        Fabs->Arshavin and Gohouri ->Kolarov

Esky, probably VDV, Fab, Gohouri (you have 2 Wigan defenders), Albrighton, Coleman. In that order.

Advice please for my team this GW

    Carson (Foster)
    Jones Onuoha Alcaraz
    Nani Bale N’Zogbia, Nasri
    Berbatov Drogba Tevez
    SUBS: Walcott, Enrique, Coleman.

1.6M in bank. No free transfers left. Just took a 4 point hit for Arteta> Nasri.

What do people think of this team:

    Hart - Robinson
    Coleman - Konchesky - Kolarov - Foley - Vidic
    Nani - N'Zog - Brunt - VDV - Adam
    Carroll - Tevez - Rooney

like mine, loads of problems , same ones actually

      1. Coleman out of favor
      2. VDV injured - more than 2 weeks im assuming
      3. Adam plays for blackpool , who have no undersoil heating.. games will get called off

Coleman is more likely to play now that Arteta is out and I think he is still going to get plenty of action to be honest.

Van Der Vaart has a hammy yeah but no big deal for a few weeks to get in someone else.

Blackpool ground is a problem yes but Adam is a season keeper I'd say, just have to figure out rotations.

As well as this, there are of course transfers.

I don't think Coleman will play anymore, not starts at least.

Arteta might be out, but Fellaini comes back from a 3 match ban next week. Everton also have Anichebe, Bily and Rodwell vying for Coleman's place.

It's not worth holding onto Coleman if he's not starting.

Yes. He'll go up. You can't stop that many transfers without a rise.

Debating whether or not to get in before the rush. He could be great.

Yeah trying to decide weather to go for him before the rise or not.

Trouble is that ManU are away at Blackpool this week - the only place not to have under-pitch heating...

So if I buy him early to avoid the price rise and then he doesn't play (because of snow) - basically a waste of a transfer this week.

ya fair point , altho as a united fan, i will be biased about united players, i think i could give a fair assesment of a player but if asked to give a comparison, i would always over reach, just ask me about anderson and you will see.

I think this is more so the case in terms of lower clubs who endeavour to over extend the abilities of new signings, and hail them as world beaters!

Thinking of Arteta -> Meireles. I've posted about Meireles here before, and Liverpool's fixtures are really tasty. Might still go with the Zog though instead.

In defence - going to bring in Kolarov. Just not sure whether to do it for Boateng or Salcido. Man City are so good at the back that I dont mind doubling up but I am worried about playing time for both Boateng and Salcido. Who do you think is more likely to get starts?

Want to get rid of Adam soon...gets BP's but that's about it
Also hearing that Blackpool have no undersoil heating makes me want to drop him as well.

A lot of options, but not one in particular that stands out

*Bale, N'Zogbia, Brunt, and one of the Liverpool mids stand out (Meireles, Kuyt, Rodriguez...all differentials but could backfire horribly haha)

    Current midfield:
    Nasri Malouda Nani Adam Ferguson
4.6 in the bank from the Fab transfer so price isn't a huge deal

    Any thoughts?

You have a better all round squad than me. A matter of picking the right bench players & captains & things will turn around. Obviously VDV should be your next trade. Try upgrade Lowry when you get a chance.

You push the bench sitter mentality to a whole new level with Lowry!

Apart from that though, you do have a decent team. Bale AND Van Der Vaart is a risk, and one I don't think will pay off because of Spurs' tricky fixtures and VdV's injury record.

You're going to have to choose one, and then use the funds on getting in someone else. Although there aren't really any outstanding candidates. Elmander and Adam are bandwagons, and if you want to get ahead, look to take a risk. An Etherington or Welbeck could see you improve a lot or lose a lot.

I transferred Fabregas out last week for Bale (and not VDV because of his injury doubt). Otherwise you have a good team, apart from Lowry, who you can do a straight swap for Simpson or Bardsley.
