Confirmations for remaining FPL Double Gameweeks

The Premier League have announced the full line-up of fixtures for all the remaining Double Gameweeks of the 2018/19 season.

They have confirmed that Gameweeks 32, 34 and 35 will all feature an expanded number of matches.

Manchester City’s are the pick of the bunch as they are set for a Double of Fulham (away) and Cardiff (H) in Gameweek 32.

Meanwhile, Brighton will have three Double Gameweeks between now and the end of the season.

We have listed all the additional fixtures below and will give our initial thoughts on the programme, which we will update throughout the afternoon.

Watford: Huddersfield (A) + Southampton (H)

Wolves: Brighton (H) + Arsenal (H)

INITIAL THOUGHTS

As had already been suggested by Pep Guardiola, Manchester City have been handed an appealing Double Gameweek in Gameweek 32.

They will face Fulham and Cardiff and present Fantasy managers with the chance to capitalise on a glut of attacking returns.

A triple-up on Manchester City options will surely be a popular strategy for anyone playing the Free Hit in Gameweek 32.

Sergio Aguero (£11.8m) and Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) are likely to take up the first two spots, but who takes the third? We’ll be looking at that in the coming days.

Chelsea have also been handed some positive fixtures for the next round of action.

They will travel to face Cardiff before hosting a travel sick Brighton side to Stamford in the following midweek.

That will further the case for Gonzalo Higuaín (£9.6m) and Eden Hazard (£10.9m) in Free Hit squads.

Those looking for budget options in Gameweek 35 could turn to Watford as their Double Gameweek 35 looks very promising indeed.

The Hornets travel to Huddersfield first, before hosting Southampton midweek.

Troy Deeney (£5.9m) and Gerard Deulofeu (£5.6m) will arguably be the most popular players to look at although with the FA Cup semi-finals looming large, Javi Gracia may shift his focus there.

A NEW CHIP STRATEGY?

Until today, we thought we knew what the optimum chip strategies would be for Fantasy managers.

However, a Double Gameweek for Brighton in Gameweek 34 does open up a new chip strategy for some looking for a different approach.

They will host Bournemouth and Cardiff in Gameweek 34 in what looks like a hugely appealing set of fixtures.

Both the Cherries and Bluebirds have been poor away from home this season and the Seagulls themselves will be fighting for their own Premier League survival.

Gameweek 34 had been pencilled in as the best time to play a second Wildcard ahead of deploying the Bench Boost in Double Gameweek 35.

However, this confirmation of a hugely appealing Double for Brighton the week before could allow those who have already used their second Wildcard to use their Triple Captain chip instead.

It would be a hugely differential move to do so but Mat Ryan (£4.4m), Shane Duffy (£4.7m) and Glenn Murray (£6.3m) all stand the chance of securing double-figure hauls in Double Gameweek 34.

This strategy might not even be open to those without their second Wildcard.

Anyone who has not played the Free Hit on Gameweek 32 might be tempted to play the Wildcard instead, use the Free Hit in Blank Gameweek 33 so that they can use the Triple Captain chip on a Brighton player.

Otherwise, the Triple Captain chip will still have to be used in a single Gameweek, with Liverpool at home to Huddersfield in Gameweek 36, Manchester United at trip to the Terriers in Gameweek 37 or Cardiff’s visit to Old Trafford on the final day of the season the favourite options at this point.

Also, those who have already played their Free Hit chips, and are unable to do so in Double Gameweek 32, might want to consider the Triple Captain chip then.

Manchester City’s double of Fulham and Cardiff makes one of either Aguero or Sterling an excellent option for that chip if it looks like they’ll play a significant part in both matches.

Think I'm going to go for Deulofeu regardless of rotation threat. Has 5 days to rest after the Fulham match before FA Cup and has an international break of rest now.

They'd had games prior (not a 2 week international break). Think they have more to play for vs. Fulham than Man City too - they went in to that without any hope.

As a change from all these RMT. Do you think VAR will change the players everyone selects in FPL next year? I think there are going to be a lot more penalties awarded and central defenders will get more goals (if not being constantly fouled) and more penalty assists (if they are).

    1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

There’s talk of penalty takers becoming more attractive... it would be good to see some data about whether VAR really increases the amount of penalties awarded though

The World Cup had a large increase for sure...

I wonder if overall though over the course of a season we won’t see a net zero impact, with as many “awarded” pens being disallowed as there are “disallowed” pens being awarded

Defenders may be coached even more to avoid contact in the box also, which may reward wide forwards etc that tend to get those mazy runs into the box

If there are more penalties awarded then there will also be more of them saved.
Penalty-saving experts such as Etheridge and Pickford (3 penalty saves each this season) could be like gold dust if still in the Premier League.

Agreed - there are so many potential impacts of VAR to FPL - the direct impacts in terms of an increased or decreased quantity of penalties vs. a non-VAR environment... the indirect impacts such as GK's as you mention, or wingers or even centre backs becoming more or less valuable

I think its important that we get some data & some analysis to help show whether an increase (or a decrease) in penalties over a full season in the premier league under VAR is a valid expectation

I'll definitely be looking to get in as many penalty takers as I can, we had Granqvist and R.Rodriguez as defenders on penalties in Fantasy World Cup but not sure if there's any in the PL? I remember Baines used to but he's rarely on the pitch these days, heard some people suggest Digne should get a chance taking penalties for Everton but I think that was said in jest. (I have no idea if Digne has taken a single penalty in his entire career).

It's still luck of the draw - Switzerland didn't get a single penalty in the world cup (or if they did, it wasn't when R. Rodriguez was on the pitch). I will probably still stubbornly refuse to get Milivojevic next year though!

I wonder is it potentially the small sample size that makes it statistically insignificant though?

The world cup in its entirety must be about equivalent to about 5 or 6 weekends of the premier league... so there could be A LOT of variance in those numbers

Also you'd have to think the quality of players in at least one team in every match of about the first 60% of those games is of a dramatically lower standard than that of the premier league - so an increase in penalties in the world cup under VAR may not be significant for penalties in the premier league under VAR?

It would be really useful to see some data from other competitions where it has been implemented as if it really is the case that VAR = more penalties, then we all need more pen takers in FPL next season...

          1. Mysterion
            • 6 Years
            5 years, 29 days ago

Yeah to make inferences for the PL it's better to use data from other leagues rather than tournaments like the WC for the reasons you mentioned. Looks like this article backs your viewpoint - includes only the first VAR season though and there were teething troubles everywhere at first
            https://www.economist.com/graphic-detail/2018/06/25/var-increases-refereeing-accuracy-but-not-the-total-penalty-count

But this might not translate to the PL either as style & standard of leagues and refereeing vary, and the tech itself is implemented differently everywhere. Hopefully the PL is more like CL/ Bundesliga than La Liga
            https://www.marca.com/en/football/international-football/2019/02/14/5c657242e5fdea7d4a8b4608.html

Eventually it may well have a net zero impact like you say above but I think that at least initially there will be a steeper learning curve for defenders (fouls given as pens after review) than attackers (simulation overturning pens after review)

I beg your pardon, you’re quite right. The World Cup did have way more. It was this article before the WC I was thinking of, which might be more interesting for FPL:

This is interesting - could you share more on this?

From what I have seen the typically held viewpoint is that there were way more penalties in the world cup with VAR than the world cup's without

(Personally I'm neutral-ish on the debate - if anything i think there could be as many factors reducing the amount of penalties under VAR as there are increasing them... so not sure the automatic logic that penalty takers become more valuable in FPL next season directly because of VAR holds water)

I'm sure that FPL Towers will add a small premium, probably 0.5, to all penalty takers, making them slightly less attractive to include in our teams. You make a good point about the central defenders - the Maguires and Duffys of this world will like it.

When you consider how many goals are scored where it appears offside should have been given you would imagine they'll actually be a reduction in open play goals. I mean most weekends there seems to at least 1 or 2 controversial goals that should have been ruled out, and likely will be with VAR. However, I do think this will balance out with more pens being awarded - unless the players really do change the way they defend set pieces (less shirt pulling, grappling etc.)

But it's also true that every week there are many instances where players are incorrectly flagged for offside. When VAR is implemented, linesmen are advised not to flag unless they're 100% certain, so VAR will pretty much eliminate false early offside flags, which will allow for many more goalscoring opportunities to be created in the first place. I would expect this to outweigh the effect of disallowing illegitimate goals.

Differentials make the team fun until right after the deadline, when the moment that clock ticks and all the "pens up" comments come up, you think to yourself:"WTF have I done?! :O"

Anyways, here a team that I'm considering.

    Ederson
    Azpilicueta Shaw(i) Schlupp
    Sterling(c) Hazard Pogba Son
    Aguero(vc) Mitrovic Batshuayi

    Hamer Connolly Simpson Ayite

Mitro is in a relegation scrap, the key threat to FUL attack, and will play vs Watford who have their attention to the FA semis. Think he could be an excellent differential.

Batshuayi has done well in that striker role for Palace, and I think could do well. Will switch to Zaha if Zaha is declared fit for the matches. They are against the calamitous Huddersfield, and I think they can sneak in a result vs Spurs.

    Thoughts?

The only relegation motivation will be for Cardiff and up imo - Fulham and Hudd are too far behind to get motivated by it.

They'll try their hardest but doubt they have that inner belief that it can be successful.

      Similar to what I have.

Query Ederson. If you have City defence seems a shame not to at least have chance if attacking return too. Laporte too pricey?

Gone Alli over Son just for that differential value.

Laporte is possible to be fair. Cheers. Ederson to Kepa.

Love the Mitro pick - don't have a forward in that price bracket myself but he's a great differential for if i did. Batshuayi doesnt impress me hugely, prefer Milivojevic or Zaha, but another good differential.

    Ederson Hamer

Any ideas what to do from here? Possibly looking at taking a few hits this week to BB (already have 10 with a double plus 2 Arsenal who are home to Newcastle) then Wildcard next week as I currently only have 5 playing in 33.

      Looking good w/o FH.
I’d focus on getting Hamer to a GK playing twice (Ryan or Foster) and downgrading Fanderson to Milivojevic to pay for it. That’s only a -4 and you have 12 DGWers. With Mane, kola and Lacazette as your SGWers.

I’m not sure trying to get Sterling in at the expense of Mane and another -4 is worth it, by the time you factor in the -4 and the weakened player to get the extra cash. You can captain Pogba, Hazard even Rashford if Lukaku still out anyway.

Young and Otamendi may be rotation risks but again is the additional -4s worth it. Assume they play 1 game each, then you are gambling on a return for the defender you bring in. Could be worth it for chelsea but they could easily concede 1 in either or both games atm.

One of the positives of your strategy is you will have a few differentials this GW and next. I’d stick to that and keep the -4s low, if you try to get too many of the FH template players in you’ll end up -12 behind the FHs with less scope to make up points.

I'm so undecided on this. If they rotate, it's Gray. If they don't it's Deeney. I might go Deeney just to get the definate first game out of him, and then punt that he plays the second one too as there's a 5 day gap before the cup.

    2. Alpharius
      • 5 Years
      5 years, 29 days ago

If I were going for a Watford striker I’d go Deeney over Gray. The upside risk of pens outweighs the downside risk of rotation for me.

      1. Flaming Flamingo
        • 7 Years

I disagree. Deeney is likely to start against United and not Fulham, Gray is likely to start against Fulham and not United., Also with Deeney off the pitch there's every chance Gray himself is be on pens.

Will be interesting to see what happens. Success even got a start in Gw30, so it’s a roll of the dice either way. I’d fancy Deeney to be involved in both games though.

If I make transfers now and click FH/WC later, will the cost of those transfers disappear in both cases?

If so, why are people committing to FH or WC now?

Wouldn’t it be best to go ahead and make transfers now where players are going to rise/fall in price and then decide on what is the best strategy after more thought?

I'll have to spend heavily but i'll have to do that for GW35 anyway with no WC available.
I think the DGW32 fixtures are more appealing to use BB. Although if I BB in DGW35 instead it gives me a little more time to plan/transfer in players.
