Harry Redknapp and Tottenham fans’ worst fears could soon be thrust upon them after it was reported Rafael Van der Vaart could face a month on the sidelines as a result of the hamstring problem that forced him off the field after just 12 minutes against Liverpool on Sunday. The Dutchman has been a revelation this season for Spurs, scoring 6 goals and making 5 assists in a series of outstanding Premier League displays that have seen him regarded as a close-to-essential acquisition amongst many Fantasy Football Managers.

The length of the injury has yet to be confirmed by Tottenham though Harry Redknapp is understandably frustrated with the loss of one of his key players…

“Rafa felt it tear, so that doesn’t look too good. It’s so disappointing for Rafa. He keeps picking up little injuries. It’s probably because he’s missed a pre-season or was away at the World Cup and not played many games. When your fitness is a bit low it’s hard to get up to speed. He keeps getting little nicks.”

Considering Van der Vaart didn’t make his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) debut till gameweek 4, his rise in price has been mightily impressive, jumping £1m in value (from his starting price of £7.5m to his current £8.5m) in the subsequent 11 gameweeks, with 29.4% of Fantasy Managers currently owning him. Food for thought, then, for those who snapped the ex-Real Madrid man up before that dramatic price-hike. Long-term VDV owners certainly have the biggest dilemma: will they keep him benched or make the move that, for some, could wipe as much as £0.5m off the value of their squads?

Sir Paulos is currently working on a substantial article delving into the merits of midfield alternatives, but two immediate stand-out ready-made replacements are Morten Gamst Pederson and Tim Cahill. Pederson has been declared 100% fit after missing Blackburn’s 7-1 slaughtering at Old Trafford and our recent Watchlist article details why the in-form man has the potential to be a cracking acquisition over the next few weeks.

Tim Cahill at times seems to be single-handedly keeping the Toffees season on course by relentlessly popping up with vital goals. He should be thought of as nothing more than a stop-gap replacement until Van der Vaart is back in action though, as the Australian takes leave of absence from the Premier League shortly to participate in the Asia Cup, and consequently may be out of domestic action for as much as six weeks.

David Moyes recently spoke on the matter, admitting:

They are due to take Tim in mid to late December and depending how far they go in the tournament will determine how long he is away. I’m trying to delay him going until January and will do the best I can.

Tottenham’s last week has quite possibly been their greatest under Harry Redknapp; they beat their old rivals in the North London derby, produced a memorable comeback against Liverpool and qualified for the knock-out stages of the Champions League. With this momentum behind them you wouldn’t rule them out winning the vast majority of their next six league games (bir, CHE, blp, avl, NEW, FUL). The loss of Van der Vaart is unquestionably damaging, but the likes of Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon and Luka Modric have all shown in recent weeks that they’re more than capable of keeping the White Hart Lane midfield in shape.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

bottomline: he has no business emailing the FA about anything.

there are FIFA delegates who need brown-nosing/bribing, BBC execs who need spamming/poisoning. hope his shytty email went straight to the recycle-bin.

Treason? Ridiculous. It's free press, IF they have evidence to show corruption they're perfectly entitled to make a program about it. And obviously they're going to air the show at the time of most interest surrounding the event. But if just one 30 minute BBC program is going to completely change the minds of the FIFA delegates then that's quite absurd.

But then if England don't win the bid, there's a nice little excuse as to why right there. All the BBC's fault, I suppose.

He basically stamped/raked his studs down the back of Jara's achilles, as retribution for Jara's elbow on Baines.

MOTD flagged it up and there's a chance that the FA could take a look at it, since the ref didn't see it, and Cahill may get a subsequent ban.

Ahh, Thanks. Lets just hope he is banned. Surely Chelsea will keep a clean sheet without Everton's main threat (Cahill) and the person who would fill his boots for the subsequent games (Arteta). I see an Aston Villa like thrashing for Chelsea.....

Thoughts on Forward selection these upcoming weeks?

Fixtures and form look good for several options, Bent, Tevez, Torres, Elmander, Carrol...

Currently Elmander/Carrol/Tevez with lots of room in the bank, and I plan on buying back into Drogba within the next two weeks. Just can't decide who to drop...they all look golden!

If the premium priced midfielders (Fabregas, Lamps, Gerrard, VdV) were avaliable, there would be a case for keeping budget strikers who have been punching above their weight. As they aren't, it doesn't make sense not to lump on Torres, Tevez, Bent....

What does the future hold for Malouda, now that Essien and maybe Lampard are back next week?
It sounds like Malouda has been playing pretty well in his deeper role> Will he be restored to a more attacking role, considering that Kalou scored against Newcastle?

As a VdV owner, I will definitely be getting rid if he's going to be out for a month. Probably for Nasri this week.

Will wait a further week to get rid of Cesc, he's been very frustrating to say the least, from squirrelling away a couple of million in the bank at the start of the season for him, to all the really annoying niggles.

I will probably bring Bale in, MGP has some terrific fixtures but a I rather think I missed the boat on him.

I still think he'll produce, but obviously my thinking is that bent will do more in the next weeks with the given fixtures. I am one of the few to have kept faith in Carroll on here but i think he has made his contribution to my team and it's time. Sunderland seems to have found their form infront of the goal and Bent's on pens too. Or do you suggest selling Drogs and having 20 odd mil in my bank!!!

Needs a further 50k to transfer him out - I reckon he'll hold price until at least Thursday - Friday will be when most players will dump him.

Hmm - good point but not sure. He went from yellow flag to no flag to red flag within the space of 24 hrs so he's 'probably' protected. There have been a few instances of that not meaning much this season - although admittedly they were with people who rose unexpectedly rather than fell. I'm in the 'luxurious' (although it doesn't feel like it) position of being able to let him drop 0.1 without it affecting me, but if not I wouldn't take the risk and would be selling soon.

    Robinson (Carson)
    Enrique Simpson Bosingwa (konchesky, stearman)
    Cahill Nzog Jarvis Nani (Fabregas)
    Elmander Drogba Tevez

Any thoughts? Is there any chance that Newcastle get clean sheet this week?
got 1 free transfer, should I use it? For who?

A word of warning to everyone thinking about MGP.

On paper Rovers have some decent fixtures but also many injuries and arguably the worst full backs in the prem and the most goal shy strike force. So you would think it was all set up for MGP to shine, unfortunately there is little to make me think he will.
The current excitement is based on his four goals in his last four games, anyone really think he will keep that up? Three were from free kicks and a fluke corner.
Here are a few things to consider.
    1. Those four goals are his only goals, none in first ten games.
    2. Only two assists all season, none since gw4.
    3. Only got BP's once when he didn't score.
    4. Not on pens.
    5. Only scored more than three pts five times.
    6. Costs more than N'Zogbia, Etherington, Brunt and Adam.
    7. Will soon start to believe his own hype again, become deluded about being wanted by Man Utd and suffer inevitable loss of form!

For obvious reasons I hope he tears it up, but he won't be in my team. 😉

Arteta and Piquionne => Silva and Torres? Nobody has these two in my mini league need some differentials. Would be a -4. Gives me a forward line of.

    Nasri , Nani, Bale, Silva
    Droga Odem Torres

Was also contemplating same move for Kuyt and Bent but i dont trust kuyt!

I've had Silva for a while. I think the big points haul might still be round the corner, but it's a long time coming.

Often the most attacking central player (great for a midfielder) but I'd rather bring Kuyt in right now than Silva.

So, VDV out. More brilliant news in this shite season.

Who is on pens for Blackburn? Just lost my place at the top of one of my leagues, although I'm still top of the money game.....just. Looking for non risky but it doesn't matter if they're a bit risky differentials.

Interesting. I may get him or MGP in for VDV then. Already got Nani, Adam, Nasri. No-one else really sticks out. If Frank was back I'd get him, but he isn't 🙁

Fatty might be back. At least Carlo would let you know. I already have MGP, going for Malouda and Arshavin next week, or if fatty is back i might take an uber gamble on him instead of Malouda.

Cahill is a thug, sent off at world cup and lucky to be there after 2 shocking tackles that should have been red carded for in friendly against nz. Only player who I can't stomach having in my team.
