Pre-Season

Lampard looks to youth after Chelsea appointment

Frank Lampard’s appointment as Chelsea head coach may be to the advantage of the club’s academy products and perhaps Fantasy managers too.

With Chelsea currently hampered by a two-window transfer ban (subject to appeal), the Blues always looked as if they would have to turn to youth this season to flesh out their squad.

Eden Hazard has already departed for the Bernabeu, while peripheral squad players such as Gary Cahill have also exited the club.

The appointment of Lampard, who worked with Chelsea loanees Fikayo Tomori and Mason Mount at Derby County last season, would seem to further the chances of some of the Blues’ hitherto overlooked starlets having a breakthrough year at Stamford Bridge.

Players such as Mount, Tomori and Tammy Abraham are not yet priced up in FPL but given that not a single senior Chelsea player costs more than £7.5m at present, there could be potential Fantasy bargains to be had once Lampard gets his feet under the door.

Speaking at his first press conference after his unveiling, Lampard said of Mount and Tomori:

They were great for me last year, both of them. They come back now with a very clean slate, as does every player – young, old, been on loan, at the club, whatever. The same for Tammy Abraham.

We’ve got young players at a really good age that have the talent, in their own way, can be huge players for this club. Part of my job will be to develop the great young players we have here.

Given the size of Chelsea’s squad, however, Lampard did add that some of the club’s rookies would have to leave on a temporary basis again:

We have a big squad, not everyone will be able to stay. For the development of certain individuals, the path will be chosen – whether it’s with us or on loan. The loan system has worked very well. That’s the next month’s assessment.

The former Chelsea midfielder was quick to stress that he won’t be jettisoning all of his senior players in favour of youth:

On one hand, trying to develop young players, I think that’s really important, but at the same time, I want to work with the experienced players. I want players that, whether you’re 18 years of age or 32 years of age, you feel like Chelsea’s your club.

If we talk about losing Eden Hazard, yes we can understand that. But at the same time, we also have a very strong squad of players and I don’t want to talk down this squad because there is huge talent there. A team that managed to come third last year in the Premier League and managed to win the Europa League. We haven’t been decimated, we haven’t lost players from everywhere, we still have a very strong squad.

One household name that was mentioned was N’Golo Kante (£5.0m), who was repeatedly played to the right of Jorginho (£5.0m) in a central midfield three in 2018/19 – something that didn’t endear Maurizio Sarri to the Chelsea faithful.

Asked whether he knew where Kante’s best position was, Lampard said:

Yeah I do, thankfully [laughs]. I’m not going to sit here and talk about how we’re going to look next season because we start pre-season tomorrow.

I’ve said it before, Kante is one of the greatest midfield players in the world, in the last few years, his performances have been outstanding. My job will be to find the best position to get the best out of him.

I know the qualities, the attributes he has.

We’ll have a full Scout Report on Lampard and his year at Derby County in the days to come.

In the meantime, let us point you in direction of two Hot Topics from Rotation’s Alter Ego and AK for further discussion and analysis of the new Chelsea boss.

Deulofeu to start season anyway as Wolves Thursday night European games might impact Jota. I would rather Jota longer term.

I have Deu atm over Jota. Europa could run Wolves into the ground and there's not a lot of rotation that can be done.

Coleman's states are good, nearly as good as Digne's, given he never got a full pre-season last year, I quite like Coleman. Question is will Everton keep as many clean sheets this season ?

Digne has a hand in set pieces which gives him the advatage, Coleman is just flat out attacking in open play. That's why the comparison is there. I think Mina/Zouma will only have set pieces to feed from which leaves less chances for attacking points returns.

okay I need somebody to explain to me why im wrong on this, because I know I'm wrong, I just can't wrap my head around it.

It seems that some defenders priced 6-7 score better than midfielders and forwards priced 6-7, so it follows that having at least 4 premium defenders will yield more points for the price you're paying.

It's an old article but interesting Lampard's thoughts on Christensen 5m. Granted Zouma is also in contention if the Everton deal doesn't happen. Rudigier isn't being rushed back and expected to be out until September ish. Worth monitoring.

4.5 for decent playing defender for 1st bench position.
4.5 for midfielder hoping will play.
4.5 for striker probably won't play.
Hoping someone comes along for 4m guaranteed to play.

I hate it because Newcastle is the other team I most want to do well but they’re the team I’d target.

Newcastle home or away is now a really juicy fixture. More so perhaps than newly promoted sides who often start full of beans.

No Rondon and Perez gone is awful. There’s no outlet apart from Almiron. Is Dwight Gale still theirs? It was a bang average squad in any event and noises off such as United tapping up Longstaff won’t help.

Yes i know, have put him in merely as a 'hopeful' as of now, it all depends on pre-season, if he doesn't look in form or nailed then it's Laporte and i will either do Diop > 4.0 def (if a starting one does arise?) or Brooks > 6.0...will see?

Yes, pointless me giving advice, so far out. I have decided to not include Mendy, and monitor him first few games weeks. Easily taking him in for Laporte in gamesweek 2/3 if needed. I agree is a masterful FPL player if selected tho.

      Yeah I like this

      Pogba could easily be son

Think maybe 2 city defenders is too much maybe azpi for Laporte and digne in for Coleman

Yes, I will prob bring in Son for either Pogba or KDB once Son returns. Don't really trust Chelsea this Season, so sticking with Laporte. I mean will Lampard even get top 5 this season, I doubt it. Thanks for insight, appreciated.

Nice balance but the main issue for me is a lack of obvious captain choice each week. There's not really anyone there I'd feel really comfortable about captaining- you could get lucky though.

Yes, this is something, that I'm aware of, do I want to captin a defender in some weeks. Could take in sterling for KDB and slide Pogba down to a 7M Mid. But then I'd miss Son, who I really want to have after the 28th..... Thanks

will be interesting who gets pens for villa, with abraham gone and kodija presumably not going to be on the pitch too often

Wesley and El Ghazi are two players tempting me atm, hopefully it's confirmed to be one of those guys in pre-season.

I reckon El Ghazi or Hourihane would be quite decent at them. Like you say, will be interesting to find out, hopefully in pre-season.

I'm going to close my eyes and pretend Matt Ritchie is my fourth £5.5m midfielder.

No manager. No sign of any manager. Preseason underway. No Rondon. No Perez. No chance of an outlet to release pressure.

      Not going anywhere near

Which one? I like how Ayoze is classified as a midfielder and playing for a more attacking side but I think it's pretty important to have an Everton attacker.

    1) Ayoze Perez, Wilson
    2) Sigurdsson, King

Perez 3.8 ppg (now a mid, better side)
    Wilson 5.6 ppg (better captain)
    9.4 ppg

    Sigurdsson 4.8 ppg (good fixtures)
    King 4.0 ppg

    8.8 ppg

If Perez was a mid last season, he would have gotten 4.2 ppg.
