Keen interest in new-look Chelsea side under Lampard

Bohemians 1-1 Chelsea

Goals: Michy Batshuayi

Assists: Kenedy

Fantasy Premier League managers were reminded of the wealth of options available to Frank Lampard’s Chelsea team in their first pre-season match.

With most of last season’s regulars absent, the Blues drew 1-1 with Irish side Bohemians on Wednesday evening.

The result was not too encouraging, but at this early stage of pre-season, it’s important not to read too much into such things.

Instead, it’s more important, especially in the case of Chelsea, to examine which players were and were not involved – as well as Lampard’s tactics.

At this admittedly early stage of his time as the Blues’ boss, he initially deployed his players in a 4-2-3-1 formation, finally taking the club away from Maurizio Sarri’s favoured 4-3-3.

A 4-1-4-1 was used in the second half, but this featured more peripheral figures.

Against Bohemians, Lampard also encouraged his players to apply a high press when they were without the ball and when in possession they were much more direct than in the 2018/19 season.

However, we will have to see these tactics utilised when more first-team players are involved before we can say with certainty that Lampard wants to use them in Gameweek 1.

As already mentioned, most of last season’s key assets were absent.

Antonio Rüdiger (£6.0m), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£6.5m) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (£6.0m) all missed out due to injury.

Meanwhile, Willian (£7.0m) and Christian Pulisic (£7.5m) are yet to join up with the squad after involvement in the Copa America and CONCACAF Gold Cup with Brazil and USA respectively.

Only six options currently priced up by FPL were in the matchday squad on Wednesday night. We have updated the Google spreadsheet cataloguing their pre-season minutes.

Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.0m) and Pedro (£7.0m) were the biggest names to feature from the start.

After 12 months of right-back duties under Sarri, new manager Frank Lampard returned Azpilicueta to a centre-back role, which could have some interesting implications for the rest of pre-season.

Obviously, there is still a long way to go, but if the Spaniard ends up being preferred at centre-back, it would leave a vacancy in the right-back position.

It was youngster Dujon Sterling who started there against Bohemians but Davide Zappacosta (£4.5m) was handed the role for the second half.

If the Italian were to hold down a starting position in the Chelsea defence this season he could provide exceptional value, so we should definitely continue to monitor him and Azpilicueta during pre-season.

Crucially, the match with Bohemians reminded Fantasy managers just how many players will be at Chelsea’s disposal in 2019/20.

Fantasy managers should track where Azpilicueta is stationed during pre-season matches this summer

It was Michy Batshuayi who scored their only goal of the game to highlight that the centre-forward battle is between three players for the 2019/20 season.

Olivier Giroud (£7.0m) is the only one to have been priced up by FPL so far but Tammy Abraham and Batshuayi, returning from loans at Aston Villa and Crystal Palace respectively, will also be in the fight.

Monitoring each of these players during pre-season will be vital, to see which one claims the number one spot given the potential bargain on offer.

In defence, former Newcastle loanee Kenedy was deployed at left-back to throw his name into the hat for competition there.

Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) already faces the challenge of Emerson Palmieri (£5.5m) so there is definitely uncertainty on that side of the defence, although Kenedy is also capable of playing on the left of midfield.

As Fantasy managers clamour for Everton assets, especially in defence, Chelsea’s match in Ireland provided a chastening reminder of the Toffees’ missing puzzle piece.

Kurt Zouma (not currently priced by FPL) was deployed at centre-back in the second half as his future continues to hang in the balance.

Marco Silva is reportedly hoping to bring the Frenchman to Goodison Park on a permanent deal but this pre-season will give us an indication of whether Lampard will let him do that.

If he starts getting regular game-time in the pre-season friendlies, it might suggest the new Blues boss would rather keep hold of him.

This would be a blow to Silva and Everton, as well as Fantasy managers looking to the Toffees defence as Zouma was a key factor in them keeping eight clean sheets in their last 11 matches of 2018/19.

Also worth tracking during pre-season is the versatile Ethan Ampadu (£4.5m).

The former Exeter City man is also capable of playing at centre-back but has historically been used in a deep central midfield role at Chelsea.

Against Bohemians, Ampadu helped screen the defence and earned high praise from the local press, who described the bite and aggression he added to midfield as something Chelsea missed under Sarri.

Meanwhile, as promised, Danny Drinkwater (£4.5m) was given an opportunity by Lampard after being forced very much out of contention by Sarri last season and Willy Caballero (£5.0m) played 45 minutes in goal.

“Fitness was our issue, we’ve been working hard on it, even this morning. Fitness was always going to be an issue against a team that’s halfway through their season. We certainly pushed ourselves to the limit. The quicker we get there the better. It’s about individuals getting fit. Some of the young lads were really good. We want to get a level of fitness and intensity in their game.” – Frank Lampard

Chelsea first-half XI (4-2-3-1): Caballero; Kenedy, Guehi, Azpilicueta, D Sterling; Ampadu, Drinkwater; Palmer, G Gallagher; Pedro; Batshuayi.

Chelsea second-half XI (4-1-4-1): Cumming; Maatsen, Zouma, Chalobah, Zappacosta; Bakayoko; Brown, Baker, Gilmour, Piazon; Ugbo.

Looks alright for a first go.

But, from my previous yrs, I'd suggest a more balanced bench.
Reason being, we're going to lose players for long unforeseen spells (Injury, RC, Rotation, etc.)

So, from the start I'd suggest a backup keeper who plays.
And, trying to find upside* players for our bench.

(*Think Fraser from last yr. - 5.5mil mid with the chance of doing well.
Or, a guy like Townsend, who still plays most weeks but, could also wind up w/ 10+ returns on the yr.)

      GL!

      Nice very nice

Not sure about that rotation really though. Think there’s better value in getting VVD. For me both Dunk and Cathcart only really work for the odd attacking return and that could happen anywhere.

Thanks guys. Unfortunately my budget doesn't stretch to VVD - and that's even downgrading keeper and a 4.5>second 4m defen. If affordable, no brainer. At mo, no can do.

      Cheers

I was thinking that there may be little difference between rotated Dunk Cathcart and just Cathcart - Digne becomes VVD

If you want Digne too then Brooks could move back. That would leave you potential 4.5 mid to rotate with Cathcart for the horrid fixtures.

Angellino won’t be first choice, too raw. Not confident that Mendy will stay, if he does then he’ll play the Euro & Cup games. Delph told he can leave and would be last resort.

Spanish rules say they have to have a release clause.

They set Neymar's at €200m years ago thinking no one would touch it. PSG did. Price inflation could mean a €500m clause looks silly small in five years time.

    What do you think folks?

    Pickford / Heaton
    Robbo / Walker / Lascelles / Cathcart / Kelly
    Sarah / Zaha / Siggy / Anderson / Hayden
    Kane / King / Jiménez

Did have 5.5 over Robbo and B Silva instead of Anderson but felt deface with only 1 premium was a bit light

No. To be fair, half the squad that got them up were loanees. They had about 14 full-time players a few days ago, so the purchases are necessary. That's not to say Mings is worth 20m, but sellers know they have to buy. Plus they're doing business at the right time. IIRC Fulham paid stupid money for 5 players on transfer deadline day. Looks like Villa are not going to do that.

      We have rich owners.

Are we the new Fulham? I hope not.

We have a good structure, recruitment so far has been done early and seems sensible... three of the players signed were already at the club on loan (Mings, El Ghazi, Hause), others are young and can improve (Konsa, Targett, Wesley), and we have Grealish and McGinn in the middle - two very good players.

The Case for Matt Ritchie as a 5.5m Defender playing out of position with penalty duties:

If Matt Ritchie were classed as an FPL defender in the past 2 years he would've racked up 152 and 155 points respectively on the position change alone. This surpasses all of this years 5.5m defenders, the closest being PVA with 140 points. This is before factoring in the possibility for extra bonus points and penalty duties.

Last season you have to scroll up to £7m midfielders before any of them surpass that points total, my guess is that a new manager will come in and effectively reinstate his status as a winger which should produce more attacking returns than his leftback/wingback role last year.

Caveats: There is uncertainty at Newcastle due to the manager situation and can see their clean sheet potential and points total dropping without Rafa at the helm. Transfers may also push him out of the starting XI as he is approaching 30, or may knock him off set pieces or penalties.

I'm waiting to see how preseason pans out but at the moment he is firmly in my team for the start of the season.

I had Richie for a while a couple years ago. Had a couple goals but was kinda bad overall FPLwise. Stayed away last year and will again this year.

Just remember you need to make a further adjustment his ''adjusted'' scores for the points deductions in games in which they conceded 2+

This would have taken another 12 points off him last season for example, reducing his score to ~140 and a bit more the year before (so he's in & around the Doherty/PVA ~140 point mark)

But his single game ceiling is positively huge now - it must be like the Sistene Chapel in there it's so high... Ritchie could be a great DGW punt for example - opening fixtures mean wait & see is better for me, although there probably will be a time & a place for him this season

That's a good point re the negative points, their first 10 gameweeks are also terrible so I think I will actually hold off until his fixtures pick up a bit.

I think that's the best approach for now - but he is a super intruiging option to me

Note there is a good extended discussion on same in hot topic below worth a read, it ruffled a few feathers, but it was an issue that needed to be tackled! 🙂

Really hope Pep stops that habit of resting him every 6th game or so

This year I think he'll get a couple of (maybe even three) hattricks, 6 or 7 braces, and another 7 or 8 single goals - plus double figures assists thrown in for good measure

Reckon he's set for a monster season personally

I wouldn't chance it personally - he looks like an easy buy & hold - leave FT's for other potentially more important things

But on the flip side if you did time it right and he opened with 3 blanks you'd have a very cheap Sterling on your hands, and possibly more points from whoever you went with instead

Risky biscuits though, I'm personally terrified of what he's capable of, not many players inspire the type of terror that a Sterling-less FPL team when City are in full flow - it's just like sticking your chin out & hoping the knockout punch doesn't come 🙂

Aguero's away form was diabolical in comparison to his ability and the service the team he was playing in were capable of giving him...

I remember seeing something about how his role in Pep's system changes enough in away games that it blunts him quite significantly

Yeah I think so, he does tend to come quite deep to help us creatively, a bit like Eriksen at Spurs, but he's still a threat. Think it was 4 goals and 3 assists since he came back from injury in February. Should do well with key passes and dribbles too.

                a) Worked just fine last year when I finished 11K and was as high as 2K in February.
                b) DCL is 100% dependent on Everton not signing another FWD. If not, good fixtures, plenty of opportunity and has performed decently when given playing time.
                c) I appreciate the feedback - still a month left and it 100% will change at some point.

Yes, I tend to rotate players and play matchups. My back line for the majority of last year was Robbo Laporte Doherty Digne AWB. I rotated alot between the latter 3. Sometimes playing 2 or 3 of them. Worked out quite well.

    Some interesting stats on Siggy

    - 23 blanks in 38 appearances last season
    - Missed 4 of last 7 penalties
    - Zero Goals & Zero Assists in last season's equivalent of his opening 5 fixtures (no villa obvs):

    cpl 0G 0A
    WAT 0G 0A
    WOL 0G 0A
    bou 0G 0A

But he's not popular for no reason - and he could do very well - but PATIENCE will be key for his legion of owners

A Siggy is for the season, not just for GW1-5

Its applicable to many, if not most players - but Siggy could potentially be more at risk than most of significant price falls early on

Its all ifs & buts obviously - but IF he kept us his rate of blanking from last year, his higher price combined with the other options that would be firing plus a large ownership with itchy trigger fingers could see a 0.3 - 0.4 fall quick enough if he doesn't hit the ground running

Obviously - vice-versa, if he fires early doors there'll be no stopping him

    how does this work?
player X costs 10 and started season with 50% players owning him.
player Y costs 10 and started season with 0% owning him.
game week 2: X is down to 25% and Y is up to 25%
will x drop in price and y rise?
and in case X stayed 50% will it rise in value or is the starting ownership disregarded?

    Currently settled on:

    Ederson
    Robertson, TAA, Ritchie
    Salah, Sterling, Bilva, Perez, Jorginho
    King, Deulofeu

    (Button, Diop, Dunk, Wickham)

I'm a Toon fan and REALLY dislike our chances, but I think Ritchie has a lot of potential as an OOP who takes our set pieces.
Jorginho won't interest me if he isn't still on pens, but if he is I think is a snip at 5m. Diop I'd be happy to play in the 11 under rotation and Dunk too, to a lesser extent. Wickham won't get a minute in my side.

    Any thoughts?
