How to Play Sky Sports Fantasy Football – A Beginner’s Guide

With the start of a new Premier League season moving ever closer, we switch our focus to Sky Sports Fantasy Football.

For the uninitiated, we will go over the basics of the game in the article below.

How do I play?

Just like in Fantasy Premier League, managers select a team of players that will either earn you attacking, defensive or bonus points in an attempt to score more than your friends, colleagues and/or the rest of the world. However, this not a squad-based game: you choose simply a starting XI and do not have a bench.

The budget, like in FPL, is £100m. There is no quota for players from the same club, however.

Game Weeks run from Friday to Thursday with managers allowed transfers in between Match Days, allowing the maximisation of potential points by bringing in an asset yet to play for one who has already been involved that week.

Instead of one free switch per Game Week as per FPL, the Sky Sports game allocates 40 transfers that can be used at any time during the season – with a limit of five in one Game Week – creating the need for a more long-term strategy.

‘Overhauls’ (the equivalent of Wildcards) are also available in Sky Sports, with two being allocated every season. The first one becomes available to use following the completion of Game Week 4 and remains an option until the deadline for Game Week 6. The dates for the second one will be announced in due course.

In the Sky Sports game, you can name more than one captain in a Game Week so long as the players in question are in action on different days. For example, if there were fixtures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in any given Game Week, a Sky Sports Fantasy manager could name a different skipper on each of those Match Days, providing they did so before that day’s deadline. Managers can also schedule their captains ahead of a Game Week, too.

How do you score points?

The points structure is largely similar to FPL in Sky Sports Fantasy but tends to award more points for the actions mentioned below.

ActionPoints scored
Starting XI2
Substitution appearance1
Goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender7
Goal scored by a midfielder6
Goal scored by a striker5
Goal assist3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper (must play 60+ mins)7
Clean sheet by a defender (must play 60+ mins)5
A penalty save by a goalkeeper5
Man of the Match3

Can My Team Lose Points?

Unfortunately, just like in FPL there are a few ways to lose points too.

ActionPoints scored
Missing a penalty-3
Every goal conceded from the second goal onwards-1
Each yellow card-1
Each red card-3
Each own goal-2

How do Bonus Points work?

Just like in FPL, there are additional points on offer for other events in matches – although the structure is slightly different, as you will see below.

There have been some changes from last season, with fewer shots on target and saves needed to garner points.

Tier 1 Action
Points scored
3 saves made (GK only)2
4 tackles won2
60 completed passes2
2 shots on target2
Tier 2 Action
Points scored
5+ saves made (GK only)3
5+ tackles won3
70+ completed passes3
3+ shots on target3

How do I play against my friends?

There are a number of different ways to compete against others in the Sky Sports game. You can create or join a Free League with your friends and colleagues but there are ways to win money too.

Sky Sports can actually administer your money league for you to avoid any awkwardness post-season. You can choose the entry fee (either £2, £5, £10 or £20 per person) and the prize structure beforehand and Sky Sports will take care of the rest.

Great to be Villa fan in FPL again with great manager and owners. If the predicted signings come off and good pre season I may triple up on our players

Have to wait for dust to settle but before all the signings would've said El Ghazi. Have to see what happens in pre season

    A. Ederson Digne or B. Pickford Laporte in the following 442 setup

    Pickford/Ederson*
    Laporte/Digne* TAAVVD Coleman
    Salah Sterling Fraser Tielemans
    King Deulofeu

    Button Noble Kelly Greenwood

    Draft #2

    Ederson Button
    TAA VvD Holding Femenia Rico
    Salah KdB Sigurdsson Perez Noble
    Kane King Westwood

    3-5-2

Noble is value at 5.0m on penalties (VAR). Rob Holding provided he's fit is the best 4.5m available and Femenia/Watford rotates with him.

We were pretty solid at the back when Mings came in and Steer got recalled in goal. Also had Whelan DCM mostly who's getting upgraded possibly by Luiz. Konsa a good Axel replacement and maybe a new GK

I spent the .5 to get Norwood-- AV Wolves have rough fixs. Hayden was good for me, but again bad fixs.
Hopefully, you don't need him, so just sit on Dendocker if that's the dude that gives you a warm feeling.

So Milli isn't able to score goals or get assists on his own? And Townsend won't do anything either then?

I think Milli is a decent option especially with Palaces early fixtures and you can swap him for Maddison when Leicester fixtures change

    What ye think of this
541 for now but may go 451 after a few weeks
.5 itb for Moura to Siggy /Rich if required
Or should I just go Digne over Coleman now?

    Fab

    Robbo TAA Azpi Laporte Coleman

    Salah Sterling Moura Brooks

    King

    4.0 dendocker 4.5 4.5

      Looks really nice

If you’re confident Moura can keep his place when Son’s back then I’d go Coleman > Digne, otherwise i’d keep the .5 for safety

Not even sure if Moura is just a 1 week punt for the fixture but if he keeps his place and I could chance him against city there are 7 pretty decent fixtures after that
Digne ownership and fixtures is worrying.

Imo Son gets right back into the team and Moura goes back to being an impact sub. He sent Spurs to the ucl final with his hat trick and still got benched by poch against pool

            I agree.

But Moura will start their first 3 games and could potentially get a few hauls which will see him be one of the first price risers.

After GW3 you can change him to another 7-7.5 mid easily enough.

I like him as an early punt. If he plays, and I think he will start those first 3 games, he could really shoot his owners up the rankings.

My concern would be with no starting 4.5 mill striker you will have 2 outfield players on your bench who will not be playing if ever needed. Fair enough if you want to wildcard early but I don't think 1 up front is a viable option long term for this reason.

Right so I've got it down to a choice between these:

    A) Trippier, Sterling and Deulefeu

    Or

    B) Laporte, Tielemans and Kane

I like that a has sterling but b seems like it would score more points overall.
Cautious about captaining sterling as he may get dropped/rested easily with pep being pep and come on a for a ten minute cameo.

I just will always gravitate to any option with Sterling in it and I will always reject any option without him.

I just don't see the point in risking not having him in your team, irrespective of his price.

Bench boost right from the off? Who’s done it before?

Last two season I hardly benifited from using it in a double gw. The extra players stretches your team out, leaving you with a weaker starting 11 the next week. The extra players are hardly superstars and they probably will be up against a top team even for that extra game.

But with the fixtures I can put a pretty good team out until gw3 after which I’d wildcard. A bench boost side looks pretty good for gw1.

Risky. We won't know what the first choice line-ups are until after the GW1 deadline, so you are likely to end up with a 0 pointer or two on your bench.

Think about this, if you play it later on in the season when you have built value through price rises, you could put out a team worth a few million more than game week 1 with your 100m limit. This is one of several reasons to play it.

Thanks mate. I’m playing 4-3-3, happy with Brooks to play every game with those fixtures so the other two mids are fodder. Taylor and Conn to rotate.

Mane for his returns is worth the mil saved over Salah IMO. Might have another look at squeezing Mo in though, cheers

My personal view outside defensive improvements, Pool were better last year due to Mane. He popped up when opposition were concentrating on Salah. The Full back movement allowed him a slightly freer role. I just worry he will keep it up this year.

Makes sense, plus the pens factor for Salah. Might have to have a rethink, but I definitely think Mane has improved in terms of decision making and being clinical. I’ll mull on it

        Pickford and Stek for me.

Pickford is set and forget and if anything happens to him pregame you have his backup already, so you will never be without a keeper.

The problem is what happens when Mendy is available (rare, I know, but it has occasionally been known to happen)?

......are that this is pretty much the cheapest Laporte is going to be in the game this season.

So, you may as well get him now. Unless he gets injured you don't have to worry about City defensive rotation ,or watch his price rise as soon as people realise their cheaper City assets keep getting benched and missing out on those juicy cleanies and decide that, actually, they need Laporte after all.

Tinkering with a 451 with a possible view to an early wildcard. Thoughts appreciated:-

    Ederson
    TAA Robertson Laporte Digne
    Brooks Salah(c) Sterling(vc) Perez Pereyra
    King

    Button Long Wickham Kelly

    Cheers in advance

It’s a risky strategy going that heavy at the back and with King as your only striker.

With Everton possibly losing Gueye and Zouma not returning, you’re relying on Digne producing attacking returns - I can’t see them being as solid as end of last season.

      6/10

Nice team. I've just commented on someone else's this same thing.. 451 means likely 2 non playing strikers on the bench. It's not a long term strategy i don't think but maybe okay if you are on a early wildcard to set up with a different formation.

Salah and Sterling are my two captaincy options. I’m concerned about Kane going mental in August plus at £11m that’s a good price for him. My tram structure is destroyed if I try and get Kane in, or I have to lose one of Salah or Sterling (which I'm unhappy about). What are others doing?

    1. Jonesfromthere
      • 11 Years

If you're not captaining any one of them, they aren't worth their price.

So I say you should have two of them at most - for me the best two are Salah + Sterling, so no Kane imo

      1. HollywoodXI
        • 9 Years

That’s where I sit with this too. I looked at the first 10 GW’s and there is only one week where I would captain Kane over Salah and Sterling.

    3. The 5% Team
      • 5 Years
      4 years, 8 months ago

Since you don't have to own players for the whole season, select the 2 big hitters who you think will do best in say the first 4-5 GWs

I have more faith in Aguero to start off great than Kane or Sterling...but probably will own Sterling for longer over the season. So starting with Salah and Aguero myself

      1. Teror
        • 9 Years

My reasoning is similar. Also: team structure. I can always do Salah > Sterling or Aguero > Kane for a few weeks if needs be

    4. Teror
      • 9 Years
      4 years, 8 months ago

It is not possible to have a balanced team consisting of three 11m+ players. Also, I'm unconvinced by Kane's August record so it's a no from me

    5. Shatner's Bassoon
      • 5 Years

Gone with Salah & Sterling currently.

Will see what Kane looks like in pre season from both a fitness and positional perspective. If he’s dropping too deep or looks like the constant injuries are starting to take a toll then he’s not for me.

Being nailed & on pens with those fixtures is definitely appealing but not enough to make me part with 11M & sacrifice the best attacking option from both the best attacking sides from last season.

Would go King + Laporte over Wilson + Ake. Bou defence can’t be trusted, and that gives you the best City defensive option while keeping BOU striker.

Yeah King + Laporte would work better as I have no city defence. I’m not sure, will have to keep tabs on Raúl, but with how small Wolves’ squad is, why not?

Is it fair to assume that Sterling will start 90% of league games this season, or is it possible there could still be significant rotation with Mahrez, Sane, Dilva, etc during Champions League weeks and double gameweeks?

Given that I would have the likes of Dendoncker & Co coming off the bench, it's not something I'd want happening too often.
