Which budget FPL options caught the eye in Gameweek 1?

From John Lundstram (£4.0m) to Mason Greenwood (£4.5m) and everyone in between, there was almost as much pre-season discussion about budget Fantasy options as there was regarding premium assets.

Those heavy hitters excelled in Gameweek 1, with five of the six £10.0m+ Fantasy options all delivering returns for their owners.

Seven of the eight £8.0m+ Fantasy Premier League forwards who played this weekend banked at least one goal or assist, while the five £8.5m+ midfielders who started in Gameweek 1 all delivered too.

As Fantasy managers try to shoehorn as many expensive options into their squads, then, we need cut-price FPL assets more than ever.

With that in mind, we will assess the players in the bottom two price rungs of each position to see how they fared in the weekend just gone.

Dunk. higher chance of attacking points plus he can assist as well nowadays. 😛

I’m leaning towards Montoya. Looks like Potter is pretty set on 3-5-2 so a 4.5 wing back seems pretty tempting

Potter played 7 different systems for Swansea last season, 3 in one game.

One system he played the least was 3 at the back, but when he did he dropped a play maker defensive midfielder in there

          Buy Brighton players with caution

It suggest he moulds the formation and tactics to the players he has at his disposal. If he thinks Brighton’s fullbacks aren’t decent enough in a flatback 4 because they’re not defensive minded, or lack height, then a wingback system is beneficial.

not really, he made changes for the fun of it, wingers played as main strikers with strikers on the bench, right wingers played left wing, left wingers played right wing, midfielders played at left back with left back on the bench, right backs at left backs, right backs as holding mids, strikers as wingers, 10s as wingers, 10s as defensive ‘play maker’ mids, right back as a winger (two right backs), strikers played deep ....

              4123 mainly, but 4141 too.

Yeah - already regret starting with a little after looking at how he started last season. Some tough fixtures coming up now (MNU, BUR, eve) and then a Chelsea team who may have sorted themselves with Kante and Rudiger back. Will judge after Thursday's game.

Feels like a one goal game to me. Not sure that's there's that much in it. If Sakho is back in for Dann then there are decent odds of a Palace cs imo.

The first string Palace defence looked quite ok in preseason and Guaita and one first choice CB have a mighty record against non top 6 opposition - 50% cs.

I'd start Robinson if I had him.

I have Ward/Kelly for a guaranteed Palace RB and feel okay-ish about it this week. But truthfully Palace away are more about scoring goals than stopping them.

What do you think the fortunes of Ozil will be this year? In and out of the team due to Ceballos or perhaps mainly playing home fixtures?

All I know is with a front line of Pepe - Lacazette - Aubameyang, there will be a midfielder worth owning.

Digne, Robbo, TAA, Kelly and Catchart. If Kelly don't start I must play Dendonker, Greenwood or Catchart.

Watford looked absolutely awful defensively. Don't trust Catchart and other 4,5 defenders like Dunk might rise in price.

Tempted to take out Catchart but don't know who to take in.

In that case Dunk/Montoya would work. Brighton and Palace somewhat rotate well. That is if you really have to sell. I wouldn’t mind keeping him on the bench for a week and see how Watford gets on. Donkey can start for you next week anyway. Wolves often do well against big teams.

The consensus on Palace boards is that Kelly will start. He's probably ahead of Dann and Sakho is still a doubt.

Cahill? I somewhat doubt it. Roy is very conservative and took ages to bring in Guaita for Hennessey - despite his fantastic record in Spain.

Haller/lanzini proper auditions this week. Was concerned by fornals being dropped and playing 4231 rather than 4141 and hernandez coming on early as if going for them would want a clean run as sole striker, non-riration for lanzini

I think this would be really interesting - although it would make playing FPL even more time consuming as would force you to watch / be on your phone every game if you care about price rises

In not doing Moura > Martial, im either learning to curb my punt instincts or have overdone it and am now in the overthinking camp.

Wish we could see the results of GW2 already.

I imagine you rightly were waiting until sterling/ederson rose for definite call (as eg salah could get injured tonight). Now the price changes train is firmly on the track (eg someone like pukki could rise before the weekend) I think people will be more decisive. The next two gameweeks are mad for changes, martial will probably rise again on sunday/mon night before he plays I'd guesd, strap yourself in!

Yep, didn’t think there was a chance Martial going up if Sterling hadnt and he was so far ahead in terms of transfers in.

Also want to wait until after the Liverpool - Chelsea game, should an injury cause a more pressing transfer.

It could well work out as a positive if Moura continues to start. I could then get Martial in for Siggy. A Lacazette price drop would be welcome too.

My theory is that I reckon fpl wasn't working properly til 6am this morning, so sterling + ederson were probably more like +180%. Could see a origi/ndombele/ederson 2nd rise tonight... We'll see, the formulas will be close by end of week

Think Origi will fall as all the managers who picked him first week swap out for a better option now he’s had his day in the sun and Mané is back.

Personally I’m going to hold one more week as I have 1.5 ITB and none of the 7m options work for me.

That said I also have Dave in defence so may decide to make Origi a 7.5 or 8 by bringing in say AWB or Shaw in his stead.

        1. Markus

That makes complete logical sense, but because of the masses price changes work primarily by who scored lots of points last week, hence he's at 60%.

Origi won't fall. As Markus notes, he was only a couple of % behind Martial in terms of price rise.
Markus' theory of the algorithm broken until today makes a lot of sense actually. If so, we'll find out in next 24 hours if Origi was really 60% and going nowhere, or nearer 99% - which I'd find incredulous.

Starting to regret Jota pick as Wolves fixtures likely to read as follows before the IB:

Thurs 15 Aug - Pyunik (H) EL - Wolves currently 4-0 up from first leg
    Mon 22 Aug - Man U (H) PL
Thurs 22 Aug - Torino (A) EL - Torino currently 5-0 up from the first leg
Sun 25 Aug - Burnley (H) PL - this is currently showing as Sat 24 but should be moved once the Pyunik second leg has concluded
    Thurs 29 Aug - Torino (H) - EL
    Sun 1 Sept - Everton (A) - PL

    Then international break.

Tomorrow's game really should be a great opportunity to rest the likes of Jimenez and Jota.

    Pope
    Zinchenko, c.taylor, robertson, Targett

Defence is a mess. You could sweat it out and hope one of Taylor or Targett starts, putting Donckers as first sub. If neither play you're stuck with KWP away at City.
Alternatively, you could panic and use your FT to get a decent 4.5 defender.

    Ryan
    TAA Robbo Digne Laporte

    Button Kelly Dendoncker Greenwood

    A) Directly swapping Deu to Pukki?

I mean as a former player. Players seem to find an extra 5% when up against their old club.

Each season they have to try to work out any changes to the FPL algorithm - clearly either something has changed this year or there has been a bug with the FPL site / data (which wouldn’t be unlikely given all the issues with the site so far)

You aren’t going to sell them this week even if they were going to drop so just don’t worry about it.

Yes value is important but you can’t go selling players like Robertson after 1 week if their price falls by 0.1

Right, Robertson is fine. I can keep him over the season but It’s be hard time with Wilson, King, and Perez.

That Martial rise is super annoying.

I was planning Barkley + Perez (if they don't do well) > Martial + McGinn/Robinson

But now I have to get a 5.0m mid instead who are all far worse options.

What will you do if Barkley and Perez score points and martial blanks this week? Will you then decide martial is a bad pick?
