Captain Sensible

Who is the best FPL captain for Gameweek 2?

Fantasy Premier League managers had a relatively easy captaincy decision for Gameweek 2, until the European Super Cup came along.

A full 120-minute outing for some of Liverpool’s key assets on Wednesday night has thrown the cat amongst the pigeons to some extent.

We have factored the midweek action into our thinking as we strive to find the best captain for the upcoming weekend.

As per usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to compare the individual players against each other statistically, as well as examine the defences of the sides they will face in Gameweek 2.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Captain Poll results as of Thursday August 15

For the second week in a row Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) has absolutely stormed the captain poll, this time taking a 55% share at the time of writing.

Even though he scored a 12-point haul in Gameweek 1, it is still somewhat surprising to see him dominate the vote so convincingly, in light of Raheem Sterling’s (£12.1m) hat-trick against West Ham.

However, it looks as if most Fantasy managers have looked at the Gameweek 2 opposition to decide between the two premium midfielders.

Southampton were well beaten by Burnley at Turf Moor last week, the Clarets scoring three quick-fire goals in the second half.

Furthermore, the Saints were second bottom for clean sheets at home last season, keeping just three of them across the course of the campaign.

Meanwhile, it looks as if Fantasy managers are not getting too excited about Sterling’s 20-point haul from Gameweek 1 as Manchester City prepare to host Tottenham this weekend.

Sterling’s record against Spurs at the Etihad Stadium is not too shabby, two goals in his last three facing them at home.

But just 11.3% of voters in the poll believe the England international is the best captain option this week, a 44% gap between him and the leading option Salah.

The second-place spot in this week’s captain poll is occupied by Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m), who opened his Premier League account for the new season in last week’s 1-0 win over Newcastle.

The Gabonese forward is currently backed by 16% of our voters, who are most likely influenced by his record against Burnley.

Aubameyang has faced the Clarets three times since signing for Arsenal and has scored twice in each one of them.

Outside of the top three is a host of will differentials in this week’s poll.

There’s a rather unexpected left-field choice in fourth place as Josh King (£6.5m) finds himself as the best of the rest.

Ahead of Bournemouth’s trip to Aston Villa, 1.8% of the voters are preparing to take a punt, while 1.76% of them are plumping for Aubameyang’s new colleague Nicolas Pépé (£9.5m).

Marcus Rashford (£8.5m), Teemu Pukki (£6.5m), Sadio Mané (£11.5m), Callum Wilson (£8.0m) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (£8.0m) are the only other options with more than 1% support.

Guess this is it. Decided to play Adams over Lundy and Captain Laca. No risk, no reward.

            Slightly haha. Not exactly objective.
Also, its was the plan pre-GW1 to capt Laca on GW2, not backing out of that now.

Laca and Fraser is gone next week to accomodate Sonny and a 7.5m Striker (whoever emerges)

I’m not brave enough, and Lacazette should be enough of a differential as it is.

    Bottomed..

Captain Salah or Wilson? Ruling out Sterling as can't captain a player against my own team 😀

Salah- worried about his mins, but good record against southampton. Is he going to be on top form after 120mins?
Wilson- good record against promoted sides. Nice differential and is completely nailed. But are Bournemouth good enough?

Double pool defence becoming a big worry with the GK issue. 1of VVD or Robbo will go next week.

Perez has good fixtures in GWs 3 and 4 so I'll probably show some patience with him even if he blanks again this week.

Jota in for King if you don't have him. Pukki is popular but I don't like the fixtures. Maybe downgrade elsewhere to get Kean or Haller.

Apparently my ar5e. Why not read Klopp's comments on this very page before jumping in?

Just read it online, he does not say he wont play but that his ankle is swollen and that he may miss tomorrow. But still even if he plays he may not be at 100%

      Bit of an exaggeration there.
Nothing said that he won’t be able to play, just not 100%.

Exactly. Right, time to leave the hysterical panic-merchants and head off to my pub quiz. My team is settled, same as last week. Nothing to think about.

Not lunchtime here mate, see my grav!
Came runner-up, cost me $1. But then I won $51 in the pub's mini FPL league last weekend, so I'm good where it counts!

One question I got right - which year were Madonna, Prince and Michael Jackson born? Same year as Sweden hosted the World Cup!

I think he still has a chance but depends how the swelled up his ankle is. I think he will make it or I hope he makes it

Can be, but still it is not great situation for his owners or double pool defence

Yeah I'm really worried about having double Liverpool def ......against mighty Southampton .....VVD cant wait and Robbo will have Mane in front of him.....double digit haul for both.....

Hi guys anyone care to have a look at this lot and advice welcomed!! Took the decision to hit the wildcard and whether or not it was a good idea remains to be seen it’s allowed me to get rid of triple Bournemouth and Perez and re structure my team and a 3rd big hitter cheers in advance!!
    Ryan
    Van Dijk Digne Dunk
    Salah Sterling Martial McGinn
    Aubameyang Pukki Wesley
    Subs- Button Norwood Lundstram Pieters

I wouldn't have double villa attack. Downgrade norwood to dendon and upgrade imo

Didn’t see Norwood - agree. Dendoncker is a jewel at 4.5.

      Uncertain you’ve got it right.

      Double Brighton defence!!!!

Going forward I’d much prefer to be on City defence than Everton too - they looked unconvincing atn best against Palace and it won’t come easier than that.

McGinn Wesley? That’s a lot of faith in Villa attack.

Yeah it’s a risk and one I may not take come deadline just looking at 3 home games in the next 4 and Wesley on pens

Ok - contemplating similar move. Impetus for me is to get Mane on my no Mo set up. Had intended to wait until 3. Mine would look like this

          Pope
          Vvd Stones Dunk
          Sterling Mane Martial McGinn
          Auba Pukki Wilson

          Auba to Kane in 3.

Wilson I have faith in as a medium term hold. Stones is hopefully a placeholder for Cancelo

Think McGinn may be a chimera.

Yeah Pope is the one I want, just not keen on his fixtures atm so unsure, I realy like that team!!! I’m planning Auba to Kane and captain in gameweek 3, are you happy with Mané over Salah?? Tbf his home form is immense so captain him at home then when he’s away Sterling it Kane/Auba

I’ve gone for Digne as a place holder for Mendy if he gets his place back

Committed to no Mo to see how far I can get and that makes Mane an obvious move for me. His home form is the temptation and Soton defence may be as rubbish as last season.

On gk - I’m looking long term. That’s one transfer I don’t want to make and Popes fixtures turn quite soon and he should be good for saves anyway.

Really want an extra 0.5 - of course - to get second 4.5 defender. Just hope Lund will do but his fixtures look rubbish quite quickly.

On my set up the 13.5 to 15.5 in Wilson Martial McGinn is the flexible point. With a double transfer I can reach any non premium mid and still get something up top. That’s the benefit of Wilson - he could easily become Mahrez or even Son. I’m seeing that price bracket as being key.

Yeah I can totally see your point about thinking long term with Pope i not make that switch, Mané at home realy interests me!!! On the Son I’ve looked and can easily get him in with Vardy or Rashford up top in the transfer too Son could even be De Bruyne so lots of food for thought!!! Guna be on it all night tnite finalising it all!!!

Mount is your problem. Unfortunately lamps making lineup calls with his heart rather than head.
Barkley clearly the better player in the no. 10 .
