Mahrez can capitalise if Pep hands him Gameweek 2 start

As a Fantasy Premier League template already begins to emerge it becomes all the more important to have at least a standout differential in your team before the potential bandwagon takes off.

The opening Gameweek of the season saw a number of highly-owned premium attackers deliver fantasy returns but last week’s differentials, Anthony Martial (£7.6m) and Ashley Barnes (£6.5m) also chipped in for good measure.

So here are three low-owned players for Gameweek 2 that may be worth having a think about…

Riyad Mahrez

Sané’s injury may help Mahrez get more game-time this season

Price: £8.5m

Ownership: 3.7%

GW2 Opponent: Tottenham Hotspur (home)

Raheem Sterling grabbed the headlines with a muchdeserved hat-trick as Manchester City opened the defence of their Premier League campaign with a routine thrashing of West Ham United at the London Stadium.

But we should not forget about one of the Citizens key architects in Gameweek 1, midfielder Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m).

The Algerian international made the most of his surprise start by delivering a hat-trick of assists in the big win.

In some ways it was surprising that he featured from the beginning after reaching the final of the African Cup of Nations and winning it over the summer, but having been rested for the Community Shield it seems he was good to go.

There’s no doubt that Pep Guardiola highly rates him, especially after averaging a goal or assist for every 121 minutes played in the league last season – all the more remarkable when considering that he wasn’t a regular starter in this competition.

The only concern with choosing a player like him is the risk of losing out to ‘Pep Roulette’. Guardiola likes to rotate his attack, which in turn keeps them fresh for their multiple competitions.

But it wouldn’t make sense for Guardiola to radically reshuffle his team so early on in the season. After all, he wasn’t able to compensate for the long-term injury loss of Leroy Sane with a new signing.

Of course, it was a surprise that the slightly injured Bernardo Silva didn’t play last Saturday but it would take some doing for him to bench Mahrez after his Gameweek 1 performance.

Perhaps Mahrez is only worth a punt if you’re looking to Wildcard early. In any case, City averaged a staggering 3.2 league goals per game last season and face Tottenham next who they’ve beaten during their last four Premier League encounters.

Teemu Pukki

Pukki has already opened his Premier League account for Norwich

Price: £6.5m

Ownership: 5.5%

GW2 Opponent: Newcastle United (home)

Despite being on the wrong end of an opening day heavy defeat at the hands of Liverpool, Teemu Pukki (£6.5m) broke the hearts of millions of FPL managers by scoring a consolation goal at Anfield.

His three shots in the box and two key passes demonstrated his attacking abilities, especially given he was able to record them in one of the hardest away matches in the Premier League.

In fairness, the way Norwich played against Liverpool, they were unlucky not to score at least twice. They certainly did not park the bus and were not afraid to venture forward against the reigning European champions.

In some ways this may have caught Liverpool off guard after their less than mediocre pre-season and Norwich’s attacking intensity could provide clues to their approach for the games ahead. After all, they averaged more than two goals per game which ultimately helped them to win the Championship.

Pukki was involved in 42% of Norwich’s league goals last season (29 goals and 10 assists). If there’s anyone that has a high probability to score for the Canaries on a weekly basis it will be him.

Their next match will be at Carrow Road where they host a Newcastle United team that looked uninspiring in Steve Bruce’s first competitive game in charge. The much heralded 3-5-2 formation did not work effectively, even against a makeshift Arsenal team.

The Magpies are notorious for being sub-par on their travels and I would expect Pukki to exploit their vulnerabilities in defence. Beyond Gameweek 2, as demonstrated last Friday, his Gameweek 1 display suggests he can also be a threat to even the strongest of defences.

We generally pick differentials who are owned by 5% or less, and Pukki was in 4.9% squads when we picked him out. Such is his popularity that he has risen to 5.5% since then.

Seamus Coleman

Coleman may hold on to his starting berth for Gameweek 2 as Sidibé continues to settle in at Everton

Price: £5.5m

Ownership: 3.5%

GW2 Opponent: Watford (home)

Seamus Coleman (£5.5m) could be one of many Fantasy assets to excel in Gameweek 2 as he prepares to host a Watford side that failed to impress on opening weekend.

The Everton right-back has been a consistent source of Fantasy returns in defence over the last decade, averaging 17 a season (including clean sheets) over the last five years, if we exclude the 2017/18 campaign in which he was blighted by a long-term injury.

There aren’t many other defenders that can match this record over the same period and he started well last weekend with a clean sheet at Selhurst Park.

Of course, there were minor concerns over the summer about Coleman being dislodged with the high profile loan-signing of Djibril Sidibe from AS Monaco, but it seems unlikely that the club captain will lose his place straight away.

Everton’s clean sheet potential remains intact despite the loss of Idrissa Gueye over the summer. Against favourable opposition they should be more than capable of showing the defensive form that helped them keep 14 clean sheets last season.

This weekend, the Toffees face a Watford side who looked out of sorts at Vicarage Road in Gameweek 1 and it’s hard to see how the Hornets will trouble Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Coleman is not only £0.5m cheaper than Lucas Digne but he still offers an attacking threat from the other flank of Everton’s defence. He is worth considering as an alternative route into the Everton defence if you can’t afford the France international.

His fixtures over the coming weeks are also positive with Aston Villa (away), Wolves (home), Bournemouth (away) and Sheffield United (home) coming up.

So, it’s another landslide for Mohammed Salah in the Captains Poll, but given the majority of managers went with the Egyptian last week only to lose out narrowly to Harry Kane captainers and more emphatically by those entrusting Raheem Sterling with their armbands, is anyone seeing any better value elsewhere this week?

The surge to Salah is understandable as opponents Southampton crashed to a 3-0 defeat at Burnley on the opening weekend but the Liverpool man has subsequently played for 120 minutes in Istanbul on Wednesday night and now the reds face a quick turnaround in games, though Jurgen Klopp has made some encouraging comments with regards to Salah’s fitness.

The alternatives do look strong this week though as that man Sterling takes his scintillating form into City’s first game at the Etihad in a fixture in which he has five goals in five games whilst Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored braces in all three of his fixtures against Burnley and will be looking to add to his tally as Arsenal open the weekends action in Saturdays early kick off.

Anyone looking elsewhere? A punt on Pukki or even a dice roll on Digne perhaps?

Who are you captaining this gameweek and why?

It's really no contest at all.

      Sterling is going to play
      Sterling is rested
      Sterling is at home
City look in better form than Liverpool

      Liverpool look a bit off
Post midweek European away day performances can be evidenced to be lethargic and lower scoring.
Salah played 120 and a PSO
      Salah looks in middling form

      It's sterling. Every single day

That Sterling stat doesn't look right to me, five goals in his last five games against Spurs?

Whilst Sterling looks to be playing at the top of his game, he's playing the CL finalists. Three of their four meetings last season ended 1-0. I see City winning, but it'll be tight, IMO, so the armband goes to Salah, who has a much easier fixture on paper.

Not sure CL finalists will be hugely relevant in the specific context of Sterling’s scoring potential

A good cup run can happen to almost any team under the sun... and the last 1-0 was definitely influenced by the 4-3 between them that came a few days before it...

But yeah no guarantees that Sterling hauls - Salah (and liverpool’s) midweek minutes are a bit of a conundrum - i wonder whether they won’t take the foot of the gas if they go a goal or two up - vs. City who will just relentlessly attack - I’m still kind of undecided though

The worry I have is that I see these games as being equally likely to end with only one goal scored, for different reasons. I am more confident of Sterling being that goalscorer than Salah given everything he touches is turning to gold. Salah is taking a lot of opportunities to get his goal.

I wanted to emphasise that Spurs are a better team than many give them credit for, and defensively they actually travel pretty well - only Arsenal scored more than two past them all last season.

No doubt Sterling could haul tho, I just think Salah is a better option this week. Time will tell.

Yeah I hear ya - I do think that as important as it is to acknowledge spurs being a superb team, on their day as good as anyone, (albeit quite some distance behind city on points)... it’s equally if not more so to acknowledge just how frightening that city attack is

Remember Sterling braced in the 4-3 which was really only about 4 months ago... city actually scored 5 but the fifth was ruled out even though it wasn’t quite definitive from VAR etc....

If Liverpool had no game midweek, and weren’t potentially missing some key personnel I’d perhaps be locked into Salah... but as it is I’m not sure they can be trusted to put up a cricket score and that’s whats possibly going to be the deciding factor

Can't argue with any of those points, only thing I will say is Champions League second legs / knockout games can throw up unusual results, as you know.

Tactically, I think Poch will go with a midfield three of Ndombele, Winks and Sissoko, with the latter helping out KWP and at times double up on Sterling. Gonna be a great match up tho, it's the one I'm most looking forward to this weekend.

I’ve has a long think on the matter and I am now doing the hokey cokey with Kane/Auba and captaining Aubameyang v Burnley. My reasoning:

            1) I have been able to avoid early injuries and chances are very very good that I can just swap back to Kane for next week’s Newcastle bonanza.
            2) One of the reasons of structuring a team with Salah/Sterling/Kane to begin the season was to take advantage of swapping out premier strikers without major surgery.
            3) Captaincy polls split between Salah and Sterling make this an excellent GW for a differential pick.
            4) Aubameyang stats against Burnley are insane

            FWIW my team with Auba:

            Heaton
            VVD Digne Zinchenko Ake
            Salah Sterling Martial Dendoncker
            Auba(C) King

            Pope, KWP, Hayden, Greenwood

Mo Salah for me. Think the 120 minutes he played is being overhyped. He's a very fit player and it's far too early in the season for klopp to start managing his minutes. Saints looked poor and Salah has scored at St Mary's before, their defence just camt handle his pace....

Sterling a good option but it could easily be a tight game v spurs and I'd fancy more chances for attacking involvements for Salah than Raheem.

            Callum Wilson for me.

            Nailed to play 90 mins.
9 of 14 goals scored away last season.
Villa conceded 31 shots in the opening fixture.
            Should be high scoring game.

Also, Callum Wilson has scored four goals and set up another four in his last five away games in the Premier League.

Salah’s got 50% in the poll vs 17% for Aubameyang and 12% for Sterling, I’d call that pretty landslidy!

A lot more people vote in captain polls than respond to hot topics.
The hot topic responders are more up-to-date and may have given more thought to the matter.

I really like the Sterling KWP matchup, in form, at home. The ManC Spurs games have shown that they can have 7+ goals.

            So thats my captian.

Tbh it seems like people are voting in the captaincy vote according to which players are in their team, explaining why Salah and Sterling are ahead of Auba this week.

If I had Auba, I would captain him.

However, since I do not, I will instead captain Sterling.

Salah might be a Duracell Bunny, but he still might be taken off after 60-70 minutes.

I'm inclined to pick the guy who can't stop scoring goals. And is up against a defender for whom the jury is out with regard to his ability to actually defend.

            Auba has the history,
            Sterling had the form,
            Salah has the fixture,

However you rate these three is likely to be the choice in the end.

For me it’s the fixture. Think Liverpool and Salah for me because Southampton are not looking great.

Pukki for me. I love a differential captain if its full of potential, especially in GWs that I feel I can get away with it if it fails. His efforts at Anfield caught my eye to back up his stats in the Champioship last season.

Is Digne too punty? I'm usually a safe captainer and i definitely don't usually consider defenders. But Everton lots of clean sheets this year, Watford dire last week, he has an assist or goal in him like last year at home to Watford.

I think Salah is a bit risky because his away form recently is not like his home, and Sterling against Spurs (2 tight 1-0s last season).

My problem is I'm short of genuine captain options after these 2. Wilson, Fraser, Robbo probably the only other ones not completely laughable.

Will Lamps go with what he played vs Liverpool or start with Barkley again?

          Hi All,

          Current team for this weekend:

          Pope
          TAA, Robbo, Laporte, Dunk
          Salah, BSilva, Siggy, Martial
          King, Jota
          Bench: Button, Perez, Zouma, Greenwood

Any point in using FT this week? (1.5m ITB) Is Dunk the right call or do you think I should play Perez?

I am over Salah sterling and pukki lol. There’s a reason Auba gets so much joy over Tark and Mee

Hmmmm. Sure it'll switch many times. Hate them early kick offs though

Why did you bring in a €11m forward if you're not going to captain him?

For his goal last week and goal this week. But Salah with higher ownership and brace inbound. Better option for the C 😉

I reckon Pereira the one attacking fullback most overlooking. With Rodgers attacking style I believe Pereira will produce much many more attacking returns this season.

I was tempted to put Lund in from the bench this week but if you search predicted sheff U team for this weekend online they dont think he will start....anyone have news to the contrary?

I don't think he'll start. Palace at home a very different game. We won't sit back and will play with a CAM most likely Freeman. Fleck and Norwood never get dropped so only makes sense to be lundstram. Was really surprised he started last weekend tbh but tbf flat 3 cms worked well as midfield better was huge

            Greetings lads

            Adrian
            Zinch Digne VVD Montaya
            Sterling Salah Martial Mcginn
            Kane Pukki

            Pope, doncks lundtram andone

Planning to do a Martial -> Perez to free up funds (but that's decrease team Val) so I can do a Adrian -> Pickford

I guess this mostly is a paranoid move with the Adrian scare, but still would appreciate some thoughts

            Cheers
