West Ham assets on Fantasy radar after win at Watford

Watford 1 West Ham United 3

Goals: Andre Gray (£5.9m)| Sebastien Haller (£7.4m) x2 Mark Noble (£5.0m)

Assists: Will Hughes (£5.5m)| Michail Antonio (£7.0m) Felipe Anderson (£6.9m) Manuel Lanzini (£6.5m)

Bonus Points: Haller x3 Noble x2 Gray x2

Sebastien Haller (£7.4m) scored twice for West Ham United to consign Watford to a third straight defeat of a decidedly miserable start to the season.

Hammers skipper Mark Noble (£5.0m) celebrated his first action of the campaign by converting an early penalty, only for Andre Gray (£5.9m) to level for the hosts in an entertaining first half.

Excellent chances came and went for both sides before summer signing Haller’s brace sealed the deal for the visitors after the break.

West Ham’s win was a question of quality over quantity at Vicarage Road.

Watford had 23 attempts, but just three on target, compared to 16 and 10 respectively for Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

Gerard Deulofeu (£6.4m) epitomised that lack of a meaningful end-product from the Hornets, with a match-high seven attempts, only one of which was on target.

Haller (right) scored a brace for West Ham as they beat Watford 3-1

Haller, by contrast, had a shot accuracy of 75% and a conversion rate of 50% from the four chances he had.

His first league goal in English football came from a tap-in following smart work by Felipe Anderson (£6.9m).

He then doubled the advantage with an instinctive overhead kick after Ben Foster (£5.0m) could only parry Michail Antonio‘s (£7.0m) header from a corner.

Haller’s 13-point haul – he was awarded maximum bonus – furthers the Fantasy cause of yet another reasonably priced striker, with the majority of the top ten scoring frontmen in Fantasy Premier League currently costing less than £7.5m.

The appeal of the France Under-21 international, owned by just 2.9% of FPL managers for Gameweek 3, is also boosted by his schedule.

The Hammers will host a very obliging Norwich City defence next weekend and they have just two matches with a Fixture Difficulty Rating of more than ‘three’ over the next nine Gameweeks.

Pellegrini’s first job of the season has been to try and successfully integrate the abundance of attacking talent now at his disposal.

Mark Noble scored West Ham’s opener from the spot

He might well have hit the jackpot at Vicarage Road, with Haller leading the line in a 4-2-3-1 formation that allowed Anderson and Manuel Lanzini (£6.5m) plenty of scope to get forward in support.

The latter earned a second consecutive assist of the season when he was brought down by Abdoulaye Doucouré (£5.9m) in the area after just three minutes.

Noble converted the spot-kick and West Ham were up and running.

Of the attacking midfield trio, only Andriy Yarmolenko (£5.9m) failed to impress, whereas his replacement Antonio, who came on after 55 minutes, set up one goal and could have had a couple himself.

Pellegrini’s post-match comments confirmed his continued commitment to progressive football, despite the 5-0 drubbing they received at the hands of Manchester City in Gameweek 1.

“It would be very easy for me, as a manager, to say after Manchester City to the players that we are going to play a different way and stay all back. I don’t think we would improve in that way. We did 45 minutes in a very good way against Manchester City. After that, we made an important mistake that decided the score. We’ve worked exactly the same though and we’ve won away, and now I hope we can win at home against Norwich City on Sunday.” – Manuel Pellegrini

That should increase the ownership figures of Haller, Lanzini and even the Fantasy troll that is Anderson.

FPL forward Deulofeu was deployed in midfield again for Watford

Only Deulofeu had more penalty area touches (12) than the Brazilian’s 11, and he was unlucky not to score when his glancing header shaved the post at Vicarage Road. He also created two big chances for his teammates.

But if West Ham attackers are now looming larger on the Fantasy radar, their defenders deserve to remain out of sight and mind for now.

Three matches in and the Hammers have kept no clean sheets and only Aston Villa, with 55, have allowed more shots than the 53 they’ve conceded.

That they weren’t punished for this generosity on Saturday was down to Watford’s wastefulness.

Deulofeu, as already mentioned, was the main culprit, but the otherwise impressive Gray was similarly profligate.

He hit the target just the once in five attempts, although he at least had the decency to score from that one accurate effort.

Will Hughes (£5.5m) set up Gray’s goal with an astute pass before contriving to miss an open goal from two yards out that rather summed up the Hornets’ sorry afternoon.

Head coach Javi Gracia lamented that failure to convert chances into goals.

“We’ve lost 1-3. That’s the final result. It’s true there were some moments in the game when we dominated, we created chances but if you don’t score with 23 shots then it’s difficult. We have to be more clinical when we dominate the game.” – Javi Gracia

His decision to partner Gray with Deulofeu in a tweaked formation was forced by a knee injury to Troy Deeney (£6.4m) that is likely to keep the captain out for the next couple of months.

“Without Troy, we tried a different formation, with four in a diamond and keeping two strikers with more mobility. In the first half, we did it well, with good chances after 10 minutes: two clear chances for Gerard. We tried a different way to find the balance, but not so well in the second half.” – Javi Gracia

Watford defensive assets remain off-limits for Fantasy managers

The goals, you feel, will come for Watford – Gracia’s side have scored just once from 42 attempts, whereas Manchester United have found the net six times from the exact same number.

But investment in that promise should likely be kept on hold, at least until after matches with Arsenal and Manchester City over the next three Gameweeks.

And, like West Ham, their defenders should remain well off limits.

The only reason for cheer at the weekend was the two save points Foster managed from his seven stops as Watford failed to keep a clean sheet for the 18th straight match.

The Eye Test

Watford fan James Moseley:

Watford looked very fragile at back against the counter but managed to dominate possession in the first half.

“They largely played through the middle nice with some nice one-two touch passing creating chances, asking some serious questions of the West Ham defence.

“Gray’s goal was fully deserved after Hughes drifted inside from the right and threading a ball behind the defence.

“However, the big problem was that the Watford full-backs were exposed to overloads in wide areas due to the diamond shape and lack of defensive width from the midfielders.

“Both Holebas and Femenía got forward themselves too to support the attack, although West Ham weren’t capitalising as much as they should, Anderson often drifting into the middle from wide.

“Also, Haller was largely anonymous before half-time, only really contributing a few headers from West Ham goal kicks.

“It was interesting to see that every Watford corner in the first half was aimed at Craig Dawson at the back post.

“He won a couple of headers but most of them were blocked and he didn’t look too dangerous.

“Watford continued to dominate possession in the second half although the game became a lot more open at this stage, West Ham only threatening on the counter.

“Hughes missed an absolute sitter while Antonio forced a decent save from Ben Foster in a one-on-one.

“Then Haller came to life after a quiet first half, tapping in from a few yards out. Watford were too easily opened up here, having looked fragile at the back all game. There was no challenge on Lanzini down the left either.

“At this point, it looked like Watford had given up but Welbeck and Sarr looked lively when they came on.

“It seems clear that Fantasy managers should avoid all Watford and goalkeepers. They have no chance of keeping a clean sheet against anyone.

“Holebas does get a lot of corners and wide free-kicks but none of them amounted to anything dangerous.

“Deulofeu looked dangerous and had chances but didn’t get many efforts on target. Hughes got in good areas and threaded good balls to Gray who looked threatening with lots of runs in behind.

“Lanzini was probably best West Ham player on Saturday and while Haller got two goals and one was a nice bicycle kick.

“Anderson was quiet until West Ham got the 2-1 lead then had loads of dribbling chances when Watford got stretched. Probably should have scored and then unlucky not to get assist.”

Well this was a bad FPL week. Didn't want to take a hit with a solid looking team, so left myself selling Salah and King to get Kane and Martial. Could've been good, obviously wasn't. But I never would've captained Salah so I basically cost myself 10 points. Over the course of a season, 10 points isn't the end of the world.

Sure it's a bad transfer, but a bit of Spurs fan it was more fun having Kane than Salah (before the game, of course). I'm sure there are others that had equally bad game weeks. Let's not forgot FPL is supposed to he fun. You'll do better next week (probably with exactly the same team).

Speaking of fun, I'm going back to 3 at the back. Waiting for clean sheets is crap.

    GL next week all.

After 3 Gws do we have enough data to say which formations is most valueable? It seems to me that there is a lot of options in midfield (always each season), hence maybe 5 mids is the way to go.

I started the season with an elite five at the back, but with the recent lack of clean sheets from the top teams, and with a number of reasonably-priced mids and forwards now showing excellent form, I may even go back to the old 3-4-3.

I hope as a Hammers fan that we can keep up the goals. Fixture run is great and they are putting the Man City game behind them. Certainly with Haller getting more comfortable we have a lot of attacking options. Good shout on Antonio, Doosra Love his style of play and can't wait for his top-notch goal celebrations. The only questions is where the points will come from each week. And we still have Pablo Fornals waiting to get more accustomed to the PL as well.

Tisza, I think the team will perform more consistently but I'm waiting another week to grab whoever looks like the best individual source of points after the international break.

Can you share your thoughts on West Ham attacking options please?

You could probably make something using a Raspberry Pi, get it to scrape you FPL team, and if it sees Kane(c), activate an attached electrode to administer a shock.

Player: KDB - do we need him or another Man City attacker to pair with Sterling?

Team: Wolves - avoid until they have been knocked out of Europa League?

Talking Point: taking hits - how much in price rise/falls justifies an extra transfer (and therefore hit)? And how many hits over a few weeks would be better played as an early Wildcard?

      Cheap attackers?
Due to most people wanting Salah, Sterling, Mane, KDB, Martial in midfield. And most people having money in defence double Liverpool, Digne, Man city / Man utd etc.

Spurs loss to Newcastle is no fluke. Lets not forget they also fell behind to Villa and struggled to break them down for 89 minutes. While most will point to Eriksen benching as the culprit, I think a lot of this also has to do with Harry Kane himself.

Honestly starting to believe that since being rushed back for his invisible CL final performance, he just hasn’t been the same since. Noticeable lack of lateral movements off the ball, reduced burst of speed on his first touch, couldnt get any separation or space all game from any defender that was marking him. Kane doesn’t miss those 6 yard sitters to close out a game.

Could these mutiple ankle ligament injuries be taking a toll on him? I really don’t tend to overreact to a just a handful of games, but even though with a small sample size he’s had plenty of time to recover and work himself into his normal form. And after carefully analyzing this game, his movements seemed very limited to me.

I don’t even own Kane, but in the case I did, I would seriously consider getting rid until he shows he has returned to peak form.

What do you think? Being too harsh?
    Old news? Hot topic?

Kane will bang a lot of goals if he has creativity around him. Eriksen, Alli and Son coming back will make a big difference. I still think Son is the best route to Spurs attack though, as he has shown last season.

I think he's entered into a permanent Rooney-esque period of slow decline.

Given he's had all summer off and was supposed to be fresh, rejuvenated and hungry, he still looks slow, lethargic and shuffles arounds in the midfield like a player 10 years older

Disagree. There was one moment against Newcastle where Kane was 1v1 with a defender in the left channel, knocked it past him with a burst of pace and put a decent cross in for Lucas.

Against Villa, he was frequently trying to play on the last shoulder and get in behind.

Against Newcastle, there were three main problems.

      1) No creativity supplied to him or the other forwards. Just dreadful.

      2) Because of his, he was having to drop deeper to try to create something, which is not what I like to see from Harry Kane.

      3) He wasn't at his best. Don't think him snatching at that shot has anything to do with decline - he just wasn't playing well, was frustrated, and lacked his usual composure.

He'll be back, once the team improves, and/or when they aren't playing teams who park the bus

Whilst I can see your point, I’d still have my concerns with your opening paragraph - do we want our 11 million forward, who was a lot of people’s captain this week, playing in other midfielders like a poor mans KDB? I’d say not.

still think it's the old argument that Spurs midfielders (Eriksen aside) prefer to score their own goals rather than provide assists.
Likes of Moura, Lamela and Son often pick the wrong option by shooting rather than picking out players in better positions.
Eriksen aside not a lot of creativity in Spurs midfield.
Also their fullbacks used to create a lot of chances for Kane but seemingly less so last 18 months.

I thought Spurs looked like they were playing a 4-3-3 with Son, Lamela and Moura across the front. Kane was nowhere most of the time going forward.

So far I’ve avoided Kane, and whilst I was worried, the combination of these games has left me less concerned.

Against teams that park the bus, unless he delivery is good (it hasn’t) spurs have been struggling.

When playing against teams that leave space, it’s Son, Moura, even Dele when fit who played in front of him.

Right now it’s penalties and hoping for an error - not for me when the midfield is delivering.

I still think Kane is a good player, but he's no an FPL option for me.

The game has changed, Salah/Mane and Sterling are great options for not too much more money who WILL outscore Kane by the end of the season if they all get similar minutes.

They're got more avenues to get bigger hauls.

Fitting 2 of them + Kane probably means no KDB as well who is steadily ticking over.

Kane was great a few seasons ago but the game has changed.

Kane has struggled for over a year now imo. Still a very good striker but not world class like he used to be- Has become very one-dimensional to play against.

Would be very interesting to see Kane under a new manager. Think he needs something new because he has looked stale.

I remember when Shearer went through a phase like this and Bobby Robson became manager at Newcastle. Robson told Shearer to concentrate on being in the box for crosses, not to toil for the team on the wing, receive the ball on the half turn rather than back to goal. Robson then built a team around Shearer to get crosses and have pace around him. I don't see Spurs really trying to play to Kane's strengths and creating for him at the minute.

Not harsh at all, Spurs have won something like four of the last fifteen games, they are not at the level of City & Liverpool.

Kane owner here, he'll score goals, he's Kane but will he score enough to trust him with the captaincy over Salah or Sterling? I have my doubts.

For those wondering why there was such a surprising Spurs/ Harry Kane result, I have performed some analysis to identify the key driver:

Eriksen is vital. W/o him, Kane drops deep to collect the ball and when he plays forward he's not there. When he's there, there are 3 defenders around him. Banged 2 goals first week, played against man city last week and this week, he should have had 2 penalties. I own him and just have worries about Eriksen leaving and Alli not in the squad. His problem isn't him

This is 7 reasons why getting rid of Kane (177124 managers already have at the time of writing this) is not a good move. Ignore this at your own peril :

      - Kane has always had a slow start to a Premier League season.

      - Newcastle United parked the bus in GW3. They did not want to go toe-to-toe with Spurs because they knew if they did that, Kane would punish them like Pukki did in GW 2. Also, he should have had a penalty.

      - Manchester City are Manchester City. They were always going to limit Spurs getting forward and having a sniff at goal.

      - Against Villa, Kane was in the Top 5 for both Total Attempts on goal and attempts on target.

      - Eriksen has not been starting for Spurs. At this point, it is clear to everyone, especially Poch that Eriksen is instrumental to the team. I am 99% certain he will start against Arsenal in GW 4. Unlikely that he will leave Spurs this window.

      - Son is back! He still needs to settle in after not playing for a while but his energy and pace will add to Kane's output.

      - Spurs are on top of the fixture favourability table for the next 4 Gameweeks from an attacking perspective.

      - Do not knee jerk. Kane will deliver. He delivers every season.

I own Kane and Capped him, but as soon as the squad was announced, I knew the chance of Kane blanking is high.
With Lamela, Moura and Son (supposedly) behind him, all of them were trying to play for themselves, selfish in the box and trying to go all the way on their own, mainly Lamela, who was playing the n°10 role. His decision making is so bad that he ruins all counter and almost all attacks.
Kane tend to drop deep to support them with their speed but in vain.

It’s this, and only this. If there was any problem with his lateral movement or movement of any kind it would show up in training.

Kane has that great chance at the end and snatched at it because he hadn’t been getting any service all game.

imo spurs need to go back to 3-5-2 to get the best out of Kane

the 4-3-3 or often the 4-2-3-1 with Kane in the 3 - gets the best out of Son/Lucas, NOT Kane

remember when Spurs full backs used to be some of the best assets in the game? me neither...
