Scoutcast to discuss luck/skill debate and budget defenders

Joe is joined by Az and David for the latest episode of the Scoutcast tonight.

You can watch it on our YouTube channel from 8pm BST to 9pm BST.

This instalment will overlap with some EFL Cup action so we will do our best to bring you live updates from those matches if they have Fantasy Premier League implications.

Some of the key topics for dicussion in episode 302 include the luck vs skill debate as well as budget and premium defenders.

Gameweek 6 was characterised by the benching of Raheem Sterling (£12.1m), a popular captain candidate.

The fact that he did not take to the pitch for Manchester City’s 8-0 win over Watford meant that many vice-captains came into play.

Some of those fell to Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), some to Sadio Mané (£11.6m), while others landed on Kevin de Bruyne (£9.9m) who scored a whopping 17 points.

Joe, David and Az will fight it out to decree whether or not those who got the Belgian’s haul doubled-up were reaping the rewards of a good decision or simply lucky.

Make sure you let us know your view!

Also, with Lucas Digne (£6.2m) disappointing his owners once again, we continue our debate from last week about the value of premium defenders moving forward.

Lessons learned from Gameweek 6:

After Spurs' embarrassing loss and performance cs Leicester last weekend, I am really reconsidering the Son (c). Spurs could easily bottle it this weekend as well. Thoughts?

It's more about attacking returns when it comes to captaincy. They couldn't score vs a 4th division team.

Agreed I’m thinking having Son is a differential enough. I’m not risking C I’m going Tammy.

That's differential (c) as well. I am considering the same, hes currently my VC, but might return to the dullard sterling captaincy

Son(c) would be hoping for a similar display from Spurs that they showed against Palace. High octane, full blooded etc etc

They’ve got it in them & maybe the home factor can help. Might be wishful thinking though on my part as also have him.

Why are the price rise/ fall prediction sites so poor this year?

Last 2 nights loads of players have been 95%+ 2-3 hours pre deadline, only for me to wake up and find that their stats have been ‘re-set’ to 80%. Once I could accept but identical thing happened last 2 nights (TAA in particular).

Something odd / even possibly manipulation is going on

just be thankful we have these sites. Prob WC's? Dont lose sleep.

When they work reasonably well these sites are incredible and hugely valuable

However when they are very wrong about price moves they are actually a hinderance as potentially you make ‘bad’ moves to catch price changes that were never going to happen

        1. Christina.

crazy to make any early moves with so much football during the week currently.

you are not forced to do anything, so blaming the site for ones actions or not actions is strange. And i never understood the concept of not taking early transfers if you must. Just make sure you have bench to play if injuries. That´s why i like to have a squad that can fill in and to be kind of falling back to options if someone gets injured in first xi.

Martial was predicted to drop for about 12 days running before he eventually dropped 0.1. Must have adjusted the formula

It could be manual price manipulation in Martials case. A lot of non playing low ownership players keep dropping, maybe because FPL towers feel they have over priced them. Someone like Martial, playing out of position for a big club could be seen as underpriced so they could be holding his price.

        1. TheDragon
          • 5 Years
          4 years, 6 months ago

Does feel like that might be happening but that’s a slippery slope for FPL if they do that

    3. badgerboy

They are free sites and don't claim to be 100% accurate.

      1. TheDragon
        • 5 Years
        4 years, 6 months ago

That doesn’t explain why currently they are doing a poor job when historically they have been great and pretty accurate.

Of course I’m not expecting 100% accuracy but last 2 night multiple players have gone from 95%+ pre deadline to 80% post. Can that really just be wildcards both times (on a Monday and Tuesday night?)

Yes they are ‘free’ to use but nothing in this life is truly free. They are making revenue based on user numbers (which is based on their predictions being reasonably accurate)

        1. badgerboy
          • Fantasy Football Scout Member
          • 8 Years
          4 years, 6 months ago

FPL towers have changed their price change system over the last few years, WCs no longer count towards rises or falls which can screw with FPL Stats algorithm and they can also manually manipulate a players price which is impossible to predict. Add onto that FPLs algorithm changes every year and we're only 6 games into the season.

They’re only so accurate later in the season. This early (yes, even 6 GWs in) their algorithms are still learning.

Manual manipulation is the tin foil hat ford fantasy football. The algorithm is not public so we do not know the factors, nor do we get to know the biggest factor, wildcards.

Points win the game, not value.

      1. TheDragon
        • 5 Years
        4 years, 6 months ago

Of course but points and team value are at least to some extent linked.

By not looking after your team value you may miss out on points longer term as you can’t get the player you want who will score more points.

    A) Play Digne + save FT

    B) Digne to Diop. Which I’m 90% going to do next week

If you had Kane, would risk the captaincy on him this GW? (Have Salah, Aguero, KDB, Kane and Abraham).

    I'm thinking he's long overdue a haul...

Spurs not in the best shape . Not sure I'd take the risk

I can't bring myself to captain Kane again. Prefer KDB or Salah from your options.

It's funny isn't it. In previous seasons Kane at home to Southampton would be an unquestionable captaincy choice.

Yeah they do seem a bit out of sorta. Might risk it this week and swap to Auba for next GW.

      Thanks

2FT and would like a Chelsea attacker. Was originally going to make the funds to do Barnes -> Tammy (*I always have the wrong Burnley forward & it's becoming too painful!*)

Or should I do Trossard -> Mount instead & hope Tammy stays (relatively) quiet?

    Thanks in advance.

**I had Barnes during Wood's purple patch last season, started with Wood this season and switched to Barnes before Wood's brace

      Trossard to mount for me
I think the key when it comes to situations like Barnes/wood or sterling/salah etc it's to stick otherwise chances are you'll miss the hauls 🙂

I think that sounds the sensible option. I have Wood in draft so there is a silver lining.

I was concerned Barnes looked a bit absent the past few games & scared of Tammy's increasing ownership but better to get rid of an injured player than someone like Barnes.

For the talk of good stats I wasn’t that impressed by the stats for either Pepe or Haller back in the IB.

Haller too reliant on service, big chances on a plate. Pepe lots of shots but low xG.

Now if I could just identify some good transfers to actually make I might have a chance at this game!

My net immediate transfer points are -21!!!

Haller looks a good player and will be a good asset for West Ham. Not sure FPL wise. Yarmalenko and Anderson main priority is to cut inside and look for goal themselves rather than assist. Lanzini being injured doesn't help either.

Gw 7- Kiko (wolves) Rico (WHU)
Gw8 - Kiko (shu) Lund (WAT)
        Gw9 - Webster(avl) Lund (ARS)
        Gw10 - Webster (EVE) Lund(whu) Kiko (BOU)

By this time i can sell son to fund one/two upgrades in defense like pope/soyancu/lowton etc

Scared shitless going without Chelsea for gw7:

Son, Salah, Sterling, De Bruyne, Cantwell
      Haller, Pukki

      Subs: Button, Greenwood, Kelly, Lundstram

      Already done a -4.

      A. Haller to Abraham for -4
      B. Free Hit
