Wilson avoids blank yet again as mid-price FPL assets impress

Four goals were shared by two in-form teams at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday, with plenty to interest Fantasy managers on the south coast.

Our Scout Notes article below recaps the best of the action.

Bournemouth 2-2 West Ham United

  • Goals: Callum Wilson (£7.9m), Josh King (£6.3m) | Andriy Yarmolenko (£5.9m), Aaron Cresswell (£4.9m)
  • Assists: Nathan Ake (£4.9m), King | Sebastien Haller (£7.4m), Felipe Anderson (£6.9m)
  • Bonus: King x3, Yarmolenko x2, Ake x1

A highly entertaining encounter at Bournemouth ended equal as Callum Wilson‘s (£7.9m) remarkable run of returns continued and Andriy Yarmolenko (£5.9m) reiterated his growing attacking threat.

The Cherries frontman scored his side’s second goal on Saturday to make it seven straight Gameweeks with a haul to his name.

His 46 points to date has only been bettered by two strikers, and four players overall, in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

And after a less-is-more performance in Gameweek 6’s win at Southampton, in which he scored from his only shot of the match, Wilson was much busier against West Ham.

In truth, Wilson could, and should, have produced more points than the six he eventually managed.

He failed to convert one especially golden opportunity when clean through as substitute goalkeeper Roberto (£4.4m) pulled off a good save, and VAR declined to award him a penalty following a late tussle in the box with Aaron Cresswell (£4.9m).

But with a decent set of fixtures to come over the next six Gameweeks – even Arsenal away and a visit from Manchester United will hold few fears for him – it would be no surprise if Wilson’s ownership surpasses its current 11.5% level.

Maximum bonus on the day went to his teammate Josh King (£6.3m), who swept home when a cross deflected off Nathan Ake (£4.9m) and into his path. The goal was originally deemed offside, only for VAR, after a lengthy, spirit-of-football-sapping delay, to correct the error.

The Norway international then played in Wilson to give Bournemouth the lead after the break.

King, with 8.4% ownership, has played second Fantasy fiddle to his fellow forward so far this season, but he has now produced two goals and three assists – a solid return for a player a full £1.6m cheaper than his team-mate.

With Ryan Fraser (£7.2m) sidelined because of illness, King again lined up on the left wing of a 4-4-2 – although whether the Scot would have been anything other than a substitute anyway after the Cherries’ recent form without him is another question.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe was fairly pleased with his side’s performance.

It’s too early to make assumptions about where we’ll finish, but in terms of our general play and how the team sets up, I do think there’s more to come from us. It doesn’t mean we have to concede at the other end, it’s not an excuse for conceding. We have to tighten up in that respect as we can’t have to score three to win.

That nod to the Cherries’ defensive fragility once again highlighted the perilous nature of owning members of their backline.

Bournemouth have kept precisely zero clean sheets this season and only two teams have coughed up more attempts than the 118 they’ve allowed, although Arsenal (on 110) might run that figure close by the end of Monday night.

As a result, the team’s two most popular Fantasy defenders, Ake (11.9%) and the 10.8%-owned Diego Rico (£4.1m), have only held their own thanks to attacking returns and, in the latter’s case, a bargain bucket price tag.

The defensive outlook might be brighter with a stalling Norwich, Watford and Newcastle to come in the next few weeks, but a change in the schedule from Gameweek 16, when they’ll have to face Spurs, Liverpool and Chelsea in the space of four fixtures, means that only Wilson and King remain overly attractive options.

The same cannot be said of West Ham who, after a so-so start, are providing good returns at both ends of the pitch.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men came into the match on a three-game run of clean sheets, prompting 134,852 managers to bring in Lukasz Fabianski (£5.1m), who is joint-top of the goalkeeper’s chart with 32 points.

He managed only one point and 33 minutes at Bournemouth, however, as he injured his hip taking a goal-kick.

Pellegrini hedged his bets about the issue post-match:

Lukasz felt a problem in a muscle in his hip when he tried to kick the ball. We need to know more about it with a medical examination. Goalkeeper is an important player, but I trust a lot in Roberto also. Roberto played well, he’s a very good goalkeeper and we will see what will happen with Lukasz’s injury and how many weeks he will be out.

Using coveted transfer slots on goalkeepers is never high on a Fantasy manager’s list of priorities, but 6.8% of them might be forced into action sometime this week, with a straight swap to Roberto at least freeing up some funds.

Transfers involving other West Ham assets could well be on the minds of many more managers than that, though.

Cresswell scored for the second week running and is a reliable dead-ball specialist, while fellow full-back Ryan Fredericks (£4.5m) recovered from a knock to start his seventh straight match and has been a model of consistency at a competitive price.

But it is in midfield where the Hammers have talent in abundance, with Yarmolenko the pick of a burgeoning crop.

The Ukraine international had double the penalty area touches of any other midfielder at the Vitality Stadium, and he scored for the second week running when he controlled Sebastien Haller‘s (£7.4m) touch, half turned Ake and curled the ball into the net.

His manager was fulsome in his praise after the game, saying:

He’s a very special player, he’s always had goals in his complete career. He was very unlucky that at his best moment last season he had an Achilles tendon injury but he’s returned and worked very hard. I’m very happy for him as he’s not only scoring, but working very hard.

With three goals from the last four Gameweeks, Yarmolenko has form, fixtures and a generous value going for him.

And the fact that he’s currently only owned by 1.8% also marks him out as a differential candidate, although that figure is already on the rise as he is currently one of the top five transfer targets for Gameweek 8.

Three other West Ham midfielders caught the eye on Saturday, with Manuel Lanzini (£6.5m) and Felipe Anderson (£6.9m) both creating two chances and Pablo Fornals (£6.1m) three.

Fornals and Anderson registered seven shots between them but it was the Brazilian – so often seen as a Fantasy troll – who ended up as the best of the trio when he provided the assist for Cresswell’s second-half equaliser.

That made it back-to-back assists – and three for the season – for Anderson, although that might not be enough to persuade those managers who have been stung by his previous taste for inconsistency.

And when Yarmolenko is the cheapest option of all four, if it’s West Ham attacking options you’re after, he looks to be the strongest candidate by a country mile.

Haller’s assist, meanwhile, was his first return since Gameweek 4. But his 5.1% ownership might be concerned that he created twice as many chances as he had shots, particularly as there are a number of more productive forwards available in his mid-range price bracket.

Whatever the option Fantasy managers eventually choose, now looks to be a good time to try and catch the West Ham wave.

They are, after all, a side in a Champions League spot, with six goals scored and only two conceded over the past four Gameweeks, and a good run of fixtures to come before November’s final international break of the year.

Matip is a million cheaper than vvd and has scored 1 less point than vvd and robbo and only 7 less than trent despite Gomez starting gw1. Matip has more bonus points than all 3 of them.

          Lol. This is the problem

The main attraction to Mahrez right now is due to the fact that most attracted buyers haven't owned him this season

Mahrez will keep your Lund, Cantwell, McGinn, Kelly or Pieters points on the bench with his 1 point 🙂

              Bilva scored a hat trick...

I find it hard to believe Pep rotates based on form. I think his aim is to keep everybody in form so he can choose players based on injury prevention and tactics

Jesus paling in comparison to Aguero has made Aguero more nailed than he should be in Pep's system, yes. But I think the wingers don't have much between 'em at the moment

Sterling's still the preferred LW because he's a natural there, so Bilva and Mahrez compete for RW while Bilva plays LW when Pep wants to rest Sterling due to exertion... I think

            1, 12, 1, 12

            or 6, 8, 6, 6

If he's not a captain it simply doesn't matter

i agree that the distribution of the points is irrelevant. However, it's probably unrealistic to expect him to keep posting 12's every time he plays. So even if we assume (generously) that he averages 9's when he plays, you'd be looking at something like 1, 9, 1, 9, which averages out to 5 points a game, which is a reasonable but not excellent return for an 8.5 mid

He plays in attack for a team averaging 4 goals a game and if equally potent in assisting as in scoring

Why do you doubt he couldn't post higher stats

Different players in different price points. Firmino takes up a Liverpool slot and has a trickier run of fixtures, but he is the in form player in that side. Wilson is scoring like Aguero right now, but always the fear with him that you ll catch the end of a hot streak.

Yes. The very common mistake many people make, is to think that their premium assets rotation affects their bb-players.

Getting bench boost out of the way could help you focus on just the free hit and triple captain chips... Which could work if there are easy games for premiums in the biggest DGWs (like last season). Problem is, we can't see that far from now

If I had your team, I'd go Ceballos to McGinn (even if for a hit) and hit bench boost with Auba (C) 🙂

Anyone think Winston Reid will ever make it back into contention?

First defender at £3.9m - so might become useful if that all important .1 is needed during ib W/C.

            Yeah.

Obviously would be a "rooted to 3rd on bench" number in a team picked to be free from too many rotation risks.

It's that that tempts. It'd be him or Kelly, who isn't exactly nailed on.

Squeezing out £.2m can be gold in a W/C team, especially with the options in mid price MF and upfront.

Wouldn't. Especially in the run up to Christmas. It's an enabler. The other option would be Eleny (£4.3 - at Besiktas) - but that feels all kinds of wrong.

Michael Cox from The Athletic wrote this about Leicester's attacking play and James Maddison... thought it was relevant to post here:

        --

But there’s something strange about Leicester’s underlying numbers so far this season. For a side unashamedly based around possession and boasting two such talented playmakers (Maddison and Tielemans), they don’t actually create many chances.

While Leicester have scored 13 goals, the joint fourth-highest in the Premier League alongside Bournemouth, their expected goals figures are much worse, just 8.0. In fact, only Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa have recorded worse statistics in that respect and, unsurprisingly, Leicester are the Premier League side who have outperformed their xG figures the most.

What does that tell us? Well, essentially, that Leicester have finished their chances exceptionally. On Sunday, they smashed in five goals from just 1.8 xG of chances – of their goals, only Vardy’s second, a header from Marc Albrighton’s left-wing cross, could genuinely be considered a clear-cut chance. Vardy’s first was squeezed in from a tight angle, Ricardo Pereira’s was a remarkably composed shot from range, and there was also an own goal and an unlikely finish from Ndidi.

Finishing effectively is, of course, a very good thing. But the general lesson is that outperforming your xG is unsustainable, even if Vardy’s ability to strike from unlikely angles appears to be a genuine feature of his skill set rather than a lucky streak.

So why aren’t Leicester creating better chances? There appear to be a couple of problems here.

The first involves Maddison, who actually missed out against Newcastle through injury, with Dennis Praet coming into the side in his place. While statistics have been circulating showing that no player has created as many chances as Leicester’s No 10 since the start of last season, this is slightly misleading. Last season, Maddison was the Premier League leader in this respect: 100 chances overall, with 41 of these from corners. This season, his statistics have nose-dived – in terms of chances created per 90 minutes, he’s 29th on the list, below Luka Milivojevic and Ashley Westwood.

That’s significant when you consider his shot statistics. Although Maddison smashed in a brilliant late winner against Tottenham last weekend, that was his first goal from 31 shots in the Premier League (including the end of last season). That paints an interesting picture: for all Maddison’s technical excellence, sometimes his decision-making isn’t good enough, and he attempts shots when an extra pass is the better option.

Leicester under Rodgers play with positions

This makes xG very deceiving with them. The "chance" isn't covered in what xG would show you, because the attacker most likely didn't touch the ball (so not recorded as a chance)... But when he does, it's either in the right place or complete nonsense

I'm not sure how to explain this. Just constantly feels that way when watching Leicester games: Vardy, Perez, Barnes, Albrighton "just didn't get there" seems to happen more often than "got there and missed". And then there are the long-range shooters in Madders and Tielemans who'd never get high xG scores from those ranges anyway

I do agree that this over-reliance on attackers being clinical isn't sustainable, of course. Maybe that's why they got Perez... :/

Sorry if this all sounds convoluted

Yeah, but it is convoluted. As soon as they ascribe a stat to potential it becomes a guessing game.

Eye test vs. stats (particularly xG). The full picture is needed.

Both eye test & stats bring the same conclusion in this case imo... but I just feel leicester are quite an unpredictable team. They could be hot today & the next they are cold. Well a good example will be when Liverpool spank them this weekend

Liverpool going to spank most teams if they can keep their backline + Bobby playing EPL games.

Do think Leicester have more potential now than a couple of seasons back. Losing Kante and Mahrez after winning the league, then Slabhead. Nididi and Tielemens not exactly like for like, but both performing very well - as is their defence... as it stands... All stacked nicely for Vardy to prosper from it, or for it to fall on it's arse.

very true, and of course actual goals don’t contribute to expected goals, so the more a team misses good chances the better the stat becomes ... it’s a bit of a chocolate teapot stat really 🙂

It was explained on here a few timed that XG only utilised chances on goal and did not include the actual goals scored ‘as a 1.0’ - I suppose it seems strange to give a goal from 30 meters anything but a 1.0 xG (because it was scored) but it actually gets a 0.20 or whatever, I think.

To emphasise this point, they rate long distance shots very lowly, but don’t consider the striker’s quality at long distance shots (Coutinho’s contribution for example at Liverpool would hardly register due to his tendency to shoot from distance and score quite often or miss with a low rating shot) - I would bet on Coutinho scoring from distance more than a dodgy player missing from 8 yards out

... as i say, bit of a chocolate teapot of a stat

              Good post.

Did you watch Rodgers' post-match interview yesterday? He did talk up their need and desire to score goals, but with an emphasis on defending first.

Vardy has a great run of fixtures coming up. 8.9 is a fairly steep price, though.

“The general lesson is that outperforming your xG is unsustainable”

This is just false - above average players will always outperform the average, and same for teams that are above average in their finishing.

An above average finisher will always outperform their XG generally, and vice versa. And that’s before you get into what method they are attempting to finish the chances with...

A player who is an above average header, below average left footer, and average right footer for example, will overperform on headed chances, underperform on left footed chances, and be close to XG on right footed chances.

XG from an FPL perspective is tenuous to say the least

Good ebening...I'm on 29 points with Greenwood left, this season has been the stuff of nightmares for me, starting to feel a bit downtrodden.

WC still in tact isn’t it? You can have a bit of fun when in a situation like that. Rank looks like you’re so far behind there really isn’t a great deal of points between you and top 100k no matter where you are at this stage

Thank you, that video really does always make me smile, lol. Yeah, I really should've used my WC much earlier, gonna hit during IB. I thought Son(C) was my ticket up the ranks but brought Aurier in over Soy because I wanted someone I'd wanna play the week after too...yeah...

Anyone considering Mahrez? May have previously been more prone to rotation but feels like Sterling could be just as much. I like the idea of Kdb and Mahrez

Mane to Mahrez and Kun to Auba (/Vardy)? Don't think so atm. Would free some cash for later use though.

                    Heaton/Button
                    VVD/TAA/Otamendi/Soyuncu/Lundstrum
                    Salah/KDB/Mount/Cantwell/Hayden
                    Aguero/Pukki/Tammy

Thinking if Norwich/Pukki blanks vs. Villa then I will do these transfers

Fabianski ruled out for two months according to the BBc, might be a good time to jump onto his replacement for the Adrian crowd with Alisson apparently on the mend.

Highlights seem to show the keeper didn't play that badly, I'd maybe have him at fault for one of the goals, seemed to just be one of those nights for Oxford so I wouldn't be quick to judge him off that performance.

Get rid of the def. Nobody with a brain should be locking up one of 3 berths with a defender for a team averaging 4 goals a game

                          Right. I went for Pereira.

I believe Ota is a poor/average pick but we'll see in the coming weeks. Their fixtures are great, their defence is awful.

                          As I said though:

Sterling, KdB, Aguero, Mahrez, Bernardo. The team is averaging four points a game. Why put in a 5.5 clogger on the hope he gets a goal.

Yup, it sounds like there is going to be rotation risks with all the City players this season. Even with that they lead the league in points.

its hard to captain a rotation risk isn't it - at least Aubameyang doesn't come with that risk and has similar scoring record...tempting..

                          That's high

Also means a few hits or wildcard happened, meaning your OR could be anywhere between 30k and 1.8m

It's good for the future though. I'm one price point ahead of the template so can make moves with a bit more ease
