FPL Question Time – Consult our panel ahead of Gameweek 9

Fantasy Premier League managers have had longer than usual to prepare for the next Gameweek.

We are just emerging from the latest international break of the campaign but that does not mean our dilemmas are any simpler.

Managers are considering selling their Liverpool assets, Manchester City are perhaps as hard to predict as ever before and we are in need of some answers.

We have put together another panel of managers to help provide some for you this week…

Who’s on the panel this week?

Hindu Monkey – Longtime Scout poster with a brutal blog to boot, HM has delivered an excellent insight throughout his FPL career. His best finish in a fantastic 11-year history was an excellent 2932nd and rose to recent Twitter-fame for his founding of the Barnes Train™ movement.

Gregor – Part of the moderator team, Gregor has an enviable FPL history with three top 1k finishes and a further three top 10k finishes, with a best of 29th in the world in 2016/17.

G-Whizz – Also part of the moderator team, currently in his fifth FPL season, G-Whizz managed a personal best finish of 4,404 in 2018/19.

Neale Rigg – Esteemed deputy editor of Fantasy Football Scout and recent survivor of Hackgate. Despite that setback, Neale remains second in the FFS Mods and Cons league, sat at 47k worldwide, and potentially on course to record a fourth career top 10k finish.

I genuinely can't stop thinking about this one, I've set the transfers up 3 times but haven't pulled the trigger the only thing stopping me being the 0.1m I've got tied up in Otamendi.

    Here's the dilemma...

    On a Wildcard, I have:
Otamendi, Soyuncu and Cantwell, 0.0 ITB

    Do I swap them for:
Ricardo Pereira, Lundstrum and Dendonks?, 0.0 ITB

    My team:
    Pope / McGovern
    Rico / Soyuncu / TAA / Otamendi / Tomori
    Mane / Sterling / KDB / Mount / Cantwell
    Vardy / Tammy / Connolly

    I'd appreciate any replies!

Well, at least some decent footy is back. Thoughts on captaincy this week? I think City and Pool assets probably struggle this week.

Abraham (NEW), Son (WAT) and Vardy (BUR) look decent.

If I had Vardy I would captain him.

      Currently on Abraham

Not sure pool will struggle if I’m honest.

I’m very tempted by Abraham. Son could be rotation risk after late return from internationals and Spurs are not ok rn even though it’s Watford, while Burnley are reasonably solid defensively, will sit back and make it difficult for Vardy’s style of play

I think Abraham is actually not a great option for this weekend. Going to wait on injuries for Liverpool and Man Utd to see if Mané could be worth the armband

Why is Tammy a bad option? Killing pts and stats.

As a captaincy option, for this weekend in particular, I'm not convinced. I think Newcastle will set up well against them, plus Chelsea will have to be defensively a little cautious as Kanté and Rudiger are out, and Newcastle tend to perform alright against bigger teams under Bruce. The three centreback formation could play Abraham out of the game. I own him as well so these aren't just justifications

fair enough. Newcastle have conceded goals aplenty vs Nor(3), Livp(3) and Leic(5) away though.

Against Norwich and Leicester they went in with a different mindset, even a different formation - against Leicester it wasn't 5 at the back, it was 4. It was especially obvious against us, they kept trying to do something with the ball but we blew them away and obviously the red card ruined them. Against the likes of Spurs however, they didn't do anything but sit back pretty much the whole game. I'd expect a repeat against Chelsea, and whilst Chelsea are in better form (I'd even expect a goal or two) I really think that Newcastle's priority will be shutting down their main goalscorer, which is also not too difficult to do in a formation with three centrebacks.

And abraham can score those both goals

If you read my last sentence again, you'll see that I imply that if Chelsea score, it won't be Abraham because I think Newcastle will make sure he has little influence on the game, which is easier for them due to playing three centrebacks.

Newcastle bringing the bus against the better attacking teams. Chelsea are in that category now.

Probably Vardy for me. Whilst it won't be easy, Burnley have just conceded a couple on road at Villa. He's fully rested, and if you look at his scoring record under Rodgers, this is the type of game he'll pick up attacking returns in.

Would you forego Leicester attack + Auba on a WC if it means being able to fit in:

    Sterling Mane KDB Mount Yarmolenko
    Wilson Abraham

As a front 7, +1.0m ITB, with the standard WC defence of TAA Dunk Soy Lund Rico?

Does anyone else find that when loading pages on this site, the browser never actually jumps to the right section?

e.g. If I am clicking the 'next page' for comments, the next page loads and then the browser will end up a scroll or two higher than where the comments actually start.

I'm thinking it may be my adblocking, but also may be slow loaded content being pulled in that confuses the browser.

2FT gives me the following team with 0.7 ITB

    Pope
    TAA Otamendi Mings
    Sterling Maddison KDB Mount
    Auba Pukki Abraham

    Button Cantwell Rico Lundstram

Anything worth a hit there? Unfortunately cant find a good way of getting in Wilson so might have to forego him. Looking at Sterling to Mane in a few weeks time when Liverpool fixtures get good again

    Please Help:

Almost finalised wildcard, boils down to:

    A) KDB + Vardy

    B) Maddison + Auba (Sterling as city cover)

The way I see it, Auba may well be the top point scorer in the game for the next 8 gameweeks and adds a viable captaincy option.

Yes, would be at the expense of either Wilson or Vadry.

    Captaincy GW 9

With Liverpool against an (albeit uninspiring) United side who are posting decent defensive stats, and City struggling a bit and away against a normally decent defensive side in Crystal Palace - is this the week to roll the dice on a off-field captain choice?

I imagine Abraham (NEW) will be a popular choice.

I am considering Pukki -> Wilson (c). Surely there's goals in Bournemouth vs Norwich.

What about getting to the Vardy party early and captaining him at home to Burnley?

Anyone else catching your eye for the armband?

Burnley could frustrate Leicester, but I just can't see Norwich holding Bournemouth...
I think it's the right choice, but its a tough one! Leicester are the better team after all, not too sure on Bournemouth and their new system.
Who's your third striker? Love that you've got Wilson & Vardy!

Am 442 with deadwood Wickham. Will likely get a 3rd striker/5th mid when I wildcard (which I've debated)

Sterling the other option but been burnt a few times now with that choice

It's such a guess this week. I'm pondering Son, Vardy, and Mané. Mané will get instantly captained if Wan-Bissaka isn't playing for some reason.

My captaincy is on Son and i don't intend to change it. I also have the concern for reduced minutes, but with big guns choices not inspiring this week, Son will be the ultimate differential. Spurs will be looking to stop the fall and do a massive comeback against the current weakest opponent at home.

I’m between Mane, Wilson and Abraham.

Haven’t decided on KDB/Sterling yet but it won’t be them. Could see Auba being frustrated by Blades away. I’ve got Maddison over Vardy for now.

I think it might be the time for a rogue armband on an established pick.

Sterling for instance. CPL aren't as good as people make out. They lost 4-0 to Tottenham and they're worse at home than away too for some weird reason.

KdB is back this week too so I can see them lighting up CPL. Sterling or KdB are likely to get my armband this week.

I think you're right, with Liverpool and Man City's respective fixtures, this is one of those weeks you can move the captaincy, IMO.

I'm probably going Vardy myself. Fully rested, Burnley just conceded 2 at Villa, and I think he'll pick up one or two attacking returns.

Not sure on Abraham myself. Stats are good, but he's blanked in four of his five home matches in all comps this season.

My bus team has Abraham (C), Vardy (vc). I fancy Vardy to do well, however I always prefer him away or against a "top" side. He seems to be better when Leicester sit back and it gives Vardy space to work behind the last defender. Burnley are solid and keep their shape well, he might be feeding off more scraps than usual.

An absolute toss up between C Wilson and Abraham. I also have Sterling and Aubameyang but am not giving them the captaincy this week. The key to my decision is which of Norwich and Newcastle is most dire on their travels - maybe wait for the Norwich news conference to find out how many of their regular first team have recovered from injury. Currently on Wilson...

Armband is on Son for me, depending on team news on Friday it will stay there, Watford will likely be whipped by a below par Spurs team anyway, where the Son may shine.

Have had tons of Captain fails on 'established' picks so far this season that I've got to try differential ones anyway.

I think Mane + KDB is very strong.

He’s better than all 3 of their current attackers for sure would be a crime if he doesn’t walk back in. Doubt potter would want to push Connolly too hard this early on aswell. Maupay is the worst of the bunch but has the biggest price tag so is de facto nailed. Groß doesn’t let potter play the fast paced attacking football that he loves. He should be nailed
