Which Liverpool assets should we buy for Double Gameweek 24?

Six-time top 5k finisher Utkarsh Dalmia – aka Zophar –  talks us through the Liverpool options after Double Gameweek 24 was confirmed.

With Utkarsh drawing heavily on stats from our Members Area, a large chunk of this article is available only to subscribers.

It’s been a tough Christmas period. Games have been coming thick and fast and with the turnaround so short between fixtures, Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have barely enough time to digest the information from one Gameweek before another is upon us.

The confirmation that Liverpool and West Ham will enjoy a Double Gameweek 24 (due to their postponed fixture in Gameweek 18) has grabbed headlines and, given Liverpool’s dominant form in the league, surely three assets is almost a requirement. Their players are already highly owned:

  • Virgil van Dijk (£6.4m) – 39.5% ownership
  • Sadio Mané (£12.3m) – 37.7% ownership
  • Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m) – 34.1% ownership
  • Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) – 24.7% ownership
  • Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) – 18.9% ownership

The ownership indicates that most teams already feature at least one of Mané or Salah with at least one Liverpool defender. The question before managers then is where to invest in for the third asset: attack or defence?

Despite conceding the fewest goals in the league (14), Liverpool have kept just six clean sheets, approximately one every third game. They registered a total of 20 shut-outs last season, an average of just over one every two games, so there has definitely been some regression there. However, it is worth mentioning that they have banked four clean sheets in as many matches since Joe Gomez (£5.1m) was partnered alongside van Dijk, so there are signs of improvement and their defence definitely warrants investment.

Their two full-backs are compared using the Comparison Tool in the Members Area for the last six Gameweeks, with Robertson on the left and Trent on the right in the below graphic:

An FPL veteran of 10 seasons, Utkarsh Dalmia has been a member of the site right since 2009 and has finished in the top 5k in six of those campaigns, with a best finish of 17th in 2010. A Chelsea fan based in India, he relies heavily on statistics for his FPL decision-making process.

      Nice one mate!

Grealish to Traore does look an appealing move this week.
Dont want to make the same mistake of holding Grealish while Villa are struggling like I did with Mount.

Yep, Watford themselves have been tight so I'm not so sure.

The alternative is to bank the ft this week and switch grealish to dcl next week , evertons fixtures are really good soon

No mention of Firmino as the third Pool player option for GW24? If you have Jimenez in the team, GW24 is when Wolves fixtures becomes significantly worse & Firmino is so much cheaper than Salah + Mane combo that you don't have to destroy the whole team to get him in.

IMO, that limitation makes the article to be about GW 1-19. Not about GW 20-24. The title is misleading.

IMO, the "real" struggle of GW24 is whether to go

          A) TAA + Salah/Mane + Gomez

          B) TAA + Salah/Mane + Firmino

          C) TAA + Salah + Mane

Choosing between these three is hard. Gomez and Firmino are cheap enough not to destroy the whole team and even keep long term. But forward slots are very important this year. Whereas Salah+Mane destroys tye team for short term gains and you can captain only one of them, so is it really worth it?

I agree with you. I don't like the Mané & Salah partnership. It completely wrecks the balance and it's not sustainable long-term.

This ... Currently on TAA + Mane and my decision is between Gomez and Firmino.

Leaning Gomez for the very reason of forward vs defender slots. Also feel Gomez has the potential to more steadily return as Liverpool see out the league (speculation).

            1. Karhumies
              • 11 Years

Yeah, I feel like Firmino may need to be transferred out for GW25 to not waste a forward slot. Whereas you could "stick" with Gomez on a great run on fixtures from that point onwards. If you want to take Firmino out and Gomez in simultaneously, you would need to carry over 1 FT from GW24 to avoid -4. Which means your GW24 planning is a long term plan with an empty Pool slot GW21-24 instead of including Gomez. In which case going Soyuncu + Evans LEI double up with TAA instead of doubling up on Gomez for Pool seems like the way to go. Which means no Maddison since you want Vardy from LEI. Which means Martial/Alli GW 21-25.

Surely the TAA, Robertson double up is the way to go, we had them earlier in the season for their attacking returns and provided great value without keeping clean sheets. Now Liverpool are keeping clean sheets just to add to the value imo makes them the best value Liverpool assets.

Plus Salah & Mane in one team makes your team too unbalanced if you also want Vardy and KDB.

Having Salah and mane is a viable option this year as there are so many budget players who are scoring points consisitently. I have Salah mane TAA KDB Vardy with decent players surrounding them.

I guess it's a case of which way you want to throw your dice. Have more defenders and hope for a clean sheet or play the 2 midfielders and hope for them to be on their game....choice is yours

I am bringing in TAA this GW

            https://fantasy.premierleague.com/my-team

I am not saying it works, but it provides a good spread of premium scorers. Looking ahead a few game weeks I will probably sell Mane or Salah for Kane. Leaning towards keeping Mane as he is more consistent this season.

Too heavily dependent on them for little back, mo needs to be ruthless at that price but he isn’t. Both would rarely haul together in one game, choose the wrong one to captain, and sucks budget out of what can be a much stronger squad.

i think the notion of unbalanced is needed to be clearer, you mean in a price point meaning or otherwise? My way of doing it is to have two cheap strikers, Ings who everyone else would want to have anyway and Maupay atm (there is a lot of options now in this section), it does make it hard to get to Jimenez etc, but if you are happy with that structure is it unbalanced? I´m not sure? I have all four, but i might not get TAA but VVD instead as i want a defender around 5-5.5, as i see a combination of that as better than another 4.5 def (Lund/Dunk/Kelly)

still got room for a 7.5 mid slot, so in essence the unbalanced in terms of price points will be that striker slot 7.5 and to some extent a premium striker above 10, but really is there any need?

I think a team is only unbalanced if there are no other players in a particular price point, so you are reliant on that one specific player or need multiple changes to adjust if it doesn't work out. With the cheaper defenders, midfielders and forwards I think we can be more flexible this season.

Both look appealing, Arsenal and Norwich will both probably try to take the game to United and get hit on the counter. Nonetheless its surely Sterling, he's the more reliable and consistent point scorer.

Many people in here says you can't have Salah, Mane, De Bruyne, Vardy and TAA in the same team. I think it depends of your current team value. If you can afford Salah, Mane and everything, why not?

    I can afford this:

    McCarty

    TAA, Lundstram, Kelly/Rico/Kiko

You're right, if you use Traorè as an enabler it's also possible.

And in the last two games I would say he is the most exiciting player to watch in the league. Before he was much speed and no end product. I saw a huge improvement in that area with nice flicks, technique and shoots.

I have Martial instead, but for people with lesser budget who wants everything else we talked about Traoré is really a no brainer.

Is there any merit in deploying a red wall strategy of TAA, Robertson and Van Dijk? There is obviously a Liverpool double gameweek coming up and as we move into the second half of the season, we may see a Liverpool side being less gung ho in attack and grind out a few 1-0 wins. Most Premier League champions seem to get in the region of 16-18 clean sheets per year, possibly indicating that there could be more clean sheets in the second half of the season than the first. If these three are accompanied by two sub £4.5m defenders, (e.g. Rico / Kiko / Kelly) and there being great value in forwards, it doesn't massively skew the team budget. Obviously this would mean not having Salah or Mane, however it is not clear which is the best Liverpool midfielder to have at any given gameweek and would allow the midfield slots to be used for other teams that need to attack to consolidate or chase a Champions League spot

It's definitely an option as all the three defenders carry attacking threat , but Liverpool have a great run even after the dgw so you would want at least one attacker to captain in the dgw and beyond

I’m considering popping the WC in to go there:

      Flappy
      TAA, Robbo, VVD
      KDB, Alli, Martial, Maddo
      Vardy, Rash, Jim
      (Hendo, Lund, Reid, Romeu)

Salah & Mane have almost consistently distracted from captaining the better performing FPL players (I.e. Vardy & KDB) all season long & may continue to do so

      *runs*

If Adama has risen last night it’d already be activated 🙂

As it is, I need to wait for tonight’s rises - I’d could also eek out a wee bit of extra TV with Ings & DCL rises so might give it the “one more GW” treatment before activating - but the button is close to being pressed

          Oh so close

I'm so tempted to push that button too lol, the fact I've 2FTs is stopping me so will prob wait another GW or two depending on how drunk I get tonight 😉

Tough with two FT’s - but there is huge potential in this approach - not without risk admittedly

But at these prices - it all depends on captaincy - just how much people expect Salah & Mane to outscore Vardy & KDB in the second half of the season?

I’m. It sure it will be an overwhelming amount - but I could be wrong of course, horribly wrong even

But I reckon Baryd & KDB provide better captaincy choices

              Let’s fly together Jia 🙂

I have different thoughts though mate, I'd be getting rid of Vardy if I wildcarded and going power 5 mid, sound defence and cheap front line of something like Ings, DCL, Greenwood 😉

I see Vardy being halfway through his “Suarez season” under Rodgers (31G 17A from 34 apps!)

As long as he’s fit, that entire Leciester team will continue to generate over 50% goal involvement for him quite easily I reckon

                  Perma (c) looks juicy

You could be right and it will make it so boring if he keeps it up as he's owned by more that half the game already!

Mane has scored only 7 points less than KDB and 12 less than Vardy.
He can easily outscore them by end of the season.

But Vardy & KDB were 9.0 & 9.5 respectively... and just as Mané can easily outscore them... they can (0easily (continue to) outscore him... even just matching him is a better result for your team overall

Let alone if Salah and Mané continue to go tick-rock on points - when they’re both fit it’s a (25.0m!) guessing game most weeks between them on who’s the right captain

Your idea has a fair argument. But as I mentioned above for me it's a question of daring to play with a clean sheet or do you hope that the front 3 score goals....I think going all out defence or all out attack, both ideas have their advantages

Yep it’s not for the faint hearted

But as long as Lovren doesn’t play, and Allison does, pool will continue to generate CS’s at a fair old clip I reckon

Plus literally every set piece, corner, DFK, IFK, has the potential for a goal from VVD, an assist from Trent or Robbo, or in most cases both 🙂

Good points.......all I can say is good luck sir, I honestly do hope that Liverpool keep clean sheets (Liverpool fan btw) even though I have taken the opposite approach atm with both Salah and Mane. The other comfort I suppose I do have is I could easily downgrade Salah or mane to more defenders and not struggle to find the funds.

Im not sure money really matters this season when you have so many bargains in defence and strikers like Ings, Jimenez who are delivering consistently.
Pretty easy to own Vardy, KDB & Mane and still have a great team overall.

With Pool's fixtures and DGW from GW24 I would definitely have one attacker.

Its the captaincy factor trying to optimise - just observed a half season where Salah & Mane have almost weekly distracted from the right captaincy choices - i.e. Vardy & KDB

If you back yourself to pick the right captain every week from Mané & Salah I think that’s the route to go down

If you fancy utilising Vardy & KDB as captains, I don’t personally think Salah & Mane are good uses of 25.0

It’s not without risks, and could backfire though, I’m well aware - but in weeks where Salah/Mané owners pick the wrong captain, the team should do well

I agree with you that Vardy & KDB are great captaincy options and are probably going to get the armband for me next 3 gameweeks.

But after that I think Pool do have the better fixtures than both City & Leicester and I will be capping my Pool attacker then.

With the league wrapped up by then, and minutes being managed as the focus shifts to champions league and FA Cup as they go for a treble... I’d be very wary of banking on consistent and explosive league returns from them 7 or 8 GW’s down the line

The same might apply to the defenders of course, but I’m not sure he’ll be subject to the same criteria

But - Meanwhile Vardy (And Leicester) will be getting 7 days to prepare for every game...

                  Food for thought 😉

The league wont be wrapped up by then. No chance Klopp will let the team ease off either. He will have them going full tilt till the end of the season. Klopp already rotates and I don't see his approach changing.

My mini-league rival has been rolling with TAA, Robbo and Alison since his gw10 wc and it's safe to say it served him well. He went from 100k to 15k despite never owning Salah or Mané, and built an 80-point lead on top of the mini-league.

I am about 70% on going with the Liverpool triple defence.
I've ran through lots of points projections and permutations for my squad and basically it comes down to which of these I think will be the highest scoring over the next 6 weeks..

Triple - Robertson, Alli, Cantwell, Rashford with TAA TC wk 24
Double - Chilwell, Salah, Traore, DCL with Salah TC wk 24

Projections come out pretty close to each other.
I will need to make a decision in the next couple of weeks.

I know a lot on here are swaying to the double pool defence... but how enticing are those fixtures from GW24 for attacking potential... could be really juicy scorelines and with Mane and Salah you’re well and truly covered... and you don’t have the dilemma of who to have of the two, always covered with the two likely (or KDB) midfielders on FPL, and with having them both you can even focus your captain selection with other options... and with TAA bringing you the goods in defence too.. the TAA Mane Salah is the way to go (IMO)
