Scout Picks

Premium midfielders with appealing matches headline Gameweek 26 Scout Picks

We’ve gone big in midfield and relatively light in attack for the Gameweek 26 Scout Picks, which may raise an eyebrow or two.

As usual, we deliberated over the Scout Squad submissions made by David, Neale, Paul and Geoff over the last few days before coming up with the final team.

We shape up in a 3-5-2 formation, with our team coming well inside the allotted budget of £85.0m.

GOALKEEPER

No goalkeeper received unanimous support among our Scout Squad panel but Alex McCarthy did get three votes ahead of Southampton’s clash with Burnley. The Clarets are in the bottom three for attempts on goal and shots in the box in away games and ranked 20th for shots on target. Southampton, meanwhile, have allowed fewer attempts on goal than all teams bar Manchester City over the last six Gameweeks.

DEFENDERS

All three of our defensive picks this week received universal backing from our Scout Squad panel.

Nine clean sheets in ten matches is reason enough to back a Liverpool defender in Gameweek 26, with Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s assist potential – he has already matched his total number of attacking returns from 2018/19 – another string to his bow. The Canaries have allowed more crosses per home game from their left flank – i.e. Liverpool’s right – than any other club this season.

While Bournemouth have admittedly picked up back-to-back wins at home, they haven’t scored in four of their last five games on the road and Enda Stevens could potentially profit from a Cherries defence that has conceded more chances from their right flank than any other club over the last six Gameweeks. Sheffield United have kept clean sheets in five of their 12 games at Bramall Lane, with only Liverpool conceding fewer goals on home soil.

Crystal Palace, meanwhile, have not only scored fewer goals than any other Premier League side this season but they have also allowed more crosses from their right flank than any top-flight team over the last dozen Gameweeks. Lucas Digne, therefore, is our Everton representative, not least because 65 of his 81 FPL points have arrived in home fixtures.

MIDFIELDERS

How many top 10k managers played the Triple Captain for Double Gameweek 24?

Mohamed Salah, the leader in our captaincy poll, has registered 16-point hauls in each of the last two Gameweeks and averages 9.2 Fantasy Premier League points per match in 2020 so far. It has to be said that Salah hasn’t been prolific on the road this season, scoring only two goals away from Anfield – although he has supplemented those strikes with five assists. Salah bucked the trend in his last away outing, however, racking up 14 points in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over West Ham United. Norwich have shipped 25 goals in 12 home fixtures this season, meanwhile.

Manchester City’s home game against West Ham is arguably the standout fixture of Gameweek 26, with Kevin De Bruyne‘s security of starts – he has made Pep Guardiola’s starting XI for 17 league matches in a row – a big draw given the unpredictability of Guardiola’s selections elsewhere. David Moyes’ troops have conceded 14 big chances and ten goals over their last four matches. De Bruyne tops the league for key passes in his last four, meanwhile.

With Aston Villa the only side to have conceded more big chances than West Ham since Gameweek 21, Son Heung-min is our third premium midfield option selected. The South Korean may be in a more central role at Spurs following Steven Bergwijn’s arrival and he has fired 11 shots in the box in the last four Gameweeks since Harry Kane was sidelined.

Sergio Aguero was a first-choice pick for three of our Scout Squad but, omitted by Paul and with other £10.0m+ options receiving universal backing, the Argentinean was a luxury we simply couldn’t afford. Instead, we turn to Riyad Mahrez as our second City representative. Both Aguero and Mahrez have started 14 matches this season, with the latter proving the more explosive with five double-figure hauls to the Argentinean’s four.

We’re gambling on Graham Potter’s unpredictable team selection as we take a punt on Leandro Trossard extending his reliable home form against Watford. All three of the Brighton winger’s goals this season and four of his five assists have come at the Amex Stadium. When selected, he has been involved in 64% of the Seagulls’ efforts in front of their own supporters. Trossard has averaged 5.1 FPL points per home appearance.

FORWARDS

Crystal Palace are without a clean sheet in nine Gameweeks, so Dominic Calvert-Lewin has a chance to continue his fine form in the Carlo Ancelotti era. The Everton striker is joint-second for big chances when all FPL assets are filtered by their last four matches.

Danny Ings may have blanked for three Gameweeks in a row (one of his run-outs coming off the bench, in mitigation) but there is little wrong with his underlying stats, with the Southampton striker joint-third alongside Calvert-Lewin for shots in the box when players are filtered by their last four matches. The fact that he has racked up those attempts in just 270 minutes of football (out of a possible 360) makes that an even more impressive statistic. Ings has scored in five of his last seven home fixtures.

SUBSTITUTES

No goalkeeper has kept more league clean sheets than Dean Henderson this season and the Sheffield United shot-stopper was the first-choice pick for three of our Scout Squad panel ahead of the Blades’ clash with Bournemouth, who score at a rate of less than one goal per game away from home in 2019/20.

Mason Holgate is an ever-present under Ancelotti and David was keen to see us double-up on the Toffees, with Palace’s shot-shy attack visiting Merseyside.

Jack Stephens was Geoff’s preferred Southampton option, having recorded three assists and three clean sheets in the last ten Gameweeks.

Watford forward Troy Deeney – third for xGI among FPL forwards since Nigel Pearson took charge – this weekend faces a Brighton and Hove Albion defence with only one clean sheet to their name in 14 matches.

THE CAPTAIN

COMMUNITY CHAMPION

Representing the community against the Scout Picks in Gameweek 26 is Haggis.

They have gone for a 4-3-3 line-up of McCarthy, van Dijk, Doherty, Digne, Stevens, Salah, Mahrez, Moura, Aguero (c), Jesus, Ings.

The community member who beats our picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season.

Community Champion gwitbrock beat our Scout Picks 86-63 in Gameweek 25 and as a result, their winning margin of 23 points is now the target to beat.

Should i stick with Mahrez on WC or replace him with Bilva/Dilva

    Other options are Bruno, Perez/Barnes...

Mahrez went off injured in GW8, and came back in GW13, right?

If my maths are correct - he has actually started 12 of the last 16 league games he’s been available for - and that was with Sterling fit

Or another way to look at it - he has actually started every league game he’s been available for since GW6 - with the exception of one concentrated spell of benching where he came on as a sub in GW’s 15, 16, 17 and another cameo from the bench in GW23

That’s almost as close to nailed as you get under Pep!

I think Zinchenko will have taken the brunt of Pep’s ire there rather than Mahrez

But with no Sterling, and no Sane, if Pep wants pace in attacking midfield there’s only one gig in town now - it’s whether he wants that pace or not that’s the thing

(He’s wanted it in 12 of the last 16 Riyad’s been available for anyways)

He doesn’t really view either of those two as attacking mids though - but he’s definitely a hard man to second guess - as you rightly pointed out below with the doubts over Aguero starting vs West Ham

If he starts, it could get ugly - but the silver lining may be he fact that any Aguero knock/niggle/injury massively dents their already stretched champions league ambitions

I think Pep’s heart will have been in his mouth after the Aurier tackle on Sunday & wouldn't be at all suprised to see him Benched v West ham to protect him from being the meat in a Declan Rice/Ogbobna/Diop triple decker sandwich

Kun could rock up vs Madrid after 6 months off & he'd still be lethal - the extended break will probably do him good

Pep is impossible to second guess though

Why would he benched with over 10 days before Madrid? Silly.. he is nailed to start with Sterling out, particularly after the players voiced their concerns to Pep over too much tinkering with lineups

Did you miss the fact the players openly asked Pep to stop changing the lineup? Going to be a front 3 of Aguero, Jesus and one of Mahrez/Bilva

Did you miss he fact that Pep publicly came out and said he’ll be considered a failure if he doesn’t win the champions league?

And the fact that his heart will have dropped when he saw Kun limping after Aurier chopped him on Sunday?

There’s a very plausible case for him being rested - especially when you consider the sheer ability of the guy - he could literally take a year off and still be the best player on the pitch vs Madrid - a match which Pep has basically came out and said will go towards defining his Man City career

Impossible to say for sure though, it is Pep after all 😉

The scaremongering and statistical distortion gets tiresome with you. If Sterling was not injured there would be a small risk of him not starting. And if Madrid were directly after the Hammers, but with the huge timescale and Leicester to play in between I would say there is a less than 5% chance he doesn’t spearhead the City attack against West Ham at the Etihad

I suppose now that you say it I can possibly understand why you might feel scared alright - but my advice is - It’s nothing to be scared of - it’s just part of the deal with City

Try not to let he fear have a negative effect, just roll with it - as I said, Pep is tricky to second guess at the best of times, so maybe his publicly stated prioritisation of the champions league, combined with the near miss on Aguero getting injured, and fpcoming up against 3 notorious hatchet men at the weekend will still result in him starting

Hipefipully for owners he does well, would be a crying shame were he to be benched! 😉

As I said, I would try to control that fear if you can at all, as difficult as it may be - as it can often lead to further negative emotions, such as anger - it’s just part of the deal with City - nothing to be afraid of or angry about 🙂

Hopefully for owners he starts and does well as he’s a fantastic player

I really hope he starts and does well for owners, it would be quite unfortunate if Pep’s publicly stated prioritisation of the champions league, combined with the fact that Aguero would still be the best player on the pitch vs Madrid after a 6 month break, let alone a 10 day break, were to get in the way of him being able to take advantage of that lovely fixture

Agree the injury situation at city is an important factor for sure - Laporte’s fitness could also be key

If he decide for example with Laporte available, to shunt Dinho back into DM alongside Rodri, that allows KDB further forward, with Mahrez/Bilva and Jesus up top

He also has Dilva and Gundogan who could allow further shuffling around the midfield deckchairs behind a Kun/Jesus lone front man

But hopefully for Kun owners he does get the start, it would be unbelievably cruel for Pep to bench him for such a juicy fixture!

Gundogan also. City win percentage when fake German playing is 52 %.

actually has he been good at all? Fernandinho was way ahead of him in that role, faster, covered much more space and his distribution is almost as good in that role. Rodri can´t cope with the intensity of the game and is so often caught out by opponents attacker. He is fine when they control the game at home vs a team that sits deep, but whenever a team with quality in counter or in general he is exposed. Laporte being out has obviously weakened them but imo, not able to play Ferna in tough games as the mid anchor is underrated as a reason for why they have been so erratic.

players needs match rythm, and for some, like Ings and Kun that is actually a way to gain their fitness which prevents them from injuries, in a tough schedules you see that they are managed, but 3 weeks off, that is not ideal for a player like Kun. I have no idea how pep thinks, and your argument based on his sayings can be used in the direct opposite way, if CHL is priority he needs his best players in their best shape, which is to play regularly. If Kun was away for 6 months, Pep would play Jesus. If Pep prefers pace on the left hand side jesus will play there, mahrez is not pacy, he is tricky. faster than silva, but not anywhere as fast as jesus or sterling, his role is totally different than that of Sterling/Jesus if he plays him there.

Yep totally agree we can’t know for sure how Pep thinks - we can only go by what he has said - and when he has dropped such a huge hint about where his priorities lie it’s difficult to know whether he’d want to risk injuring Aguero after Spurs so obviously tried to rough house him on Sunday

Can he take the risk of West Ham doing similar? Who knows - Players also need not to be broken into a million pieces to play - and for a player like Kun, he is easily capable of turning out vs Madrid after a 6 month hiatus, let alone a week or two - he extended rest would actually do an injury prone player like himself or Ings the world of good

Mahrez has actually started 12 of the last 16 games he’s been available for in th eleague, so Pep certainly does indicate his pace is something he likes having in the team - with Sterling out that’s perhaps even moreso the case

But who knows for sure, he’s a difficult man to second guess as you rightly point out with all the doubts over Kun’s start

Really hope for his owners that Pep doesn’t disappoint!

Lundstram to Stevens worth a -4? If I wait a week it will still be for a hit as I'm planning to do DCL to Jimmy. If I keep Lund I have to play him or Soyuncu or Rico.

Also don't have Henderson, so no Sheffield defensive cover.

How does this WC team look? Will save FT in gw 27, and then switch Kun + Mooy to Vardy + Barnes for bgw 28.

    Pope
    TAA // Gomez // Tanganga // Egan
    Salah // KDB // Son
    Kun (c) // Ings // Jimi

    Button // Mooy // Stephens // Hayden

Tanganga may not be regular for now as Bdavies is in contention.....

    A) DCL + Son + Gomez (-4)
    B) Firmino + Mahrez (-4)

I was thinking Son was the way to go, but now can't not stop thinking about how explosive Firmino and Mahrez could be if things went right.

    1.Grealish and O'Connell
    2.Stevens and Fleck?

    B. Maddison and martial to Mahrez and grealish (-4)

Don’t think the -4 for players who blank in a couple of weeks is worth it so not B. Bergwijn maybe worth a punt as not many options in that price range, but Maddi fixtures do turn and he’s still pretty involved despite all the blanks

What is the latest forecast for Manchester re the high wind warning and the chance of the game being postponed?
I am from New Zealand and have my WC active with Aguero, Mahrez and Laporte picked just for this fixture. Hoping to get some information before deadline or I will have to change to Firmino, Richarlison and bench Laporte
