What Premier League suspension means for FPL managers and FFScout

The Premier League have announced that all matches will be suspended until the weekend of April 4, 2020 in light of growing coronavirus (COVID-19) concerns.

That means that there will be no fixtures in Gameweek 30 and Gameweek 31.

That round of action is scheduled to take place after the next international break, although Euro 2020 play-off matches and friendlies are at risk of postponement in light of CONMEBOL already cancelling World Cup qualifiers.

As things stand, no decision has been taken on what the rest of the 2019/20 campaign will look like, or if the season will be declared null and void.

It looks as if the situation will be reviewed again as we approach Gameweek 32 next month while postponed fixtures will be rearranged when possible.

“Despite the challenges, it is the Premier League’s aim to reschedule the displaced fixtures, including those played by Academy sides, when it is safe to do so. In this fast-moving environment, further updates will be provided when appropriate.” – Premier League statement

We will endeavour to bring you a breakdown of the exact impact on FPL as and when we have it.

What does this mean for FFScout?

As a result of the Premier League’s unprecedented, but not unexpected, announcement, we will cease all coverage of the build-up to Gameweek 30 with immediate effect.

We will spend the next few days assessing the situation and working out what content we can produce for the foreseeable future.

In that time, the production of articles, videos and podcasts will temporarily experience a shift in focus until we know more about what the future holds for the Premier League and Fantasy Football.

Over the next few days, we will endeavour to bring you as much news as is relevant to the situation and our focus on FPL strategy will, in line with the gravity of the situation, be stripped back.

We will be temporarily suspending the FFS Cup and Head-to-Head leagues and making a decision further down the line on how best to proceed with the competitions.

What is the latest on coronavirus in football?

The news of the Premier League’s suspension comes in the wake of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta testing positive for COVID-19 in the late hours of Thursday evening.

The Premier League had originally planned to see all Gameweek 30 matches proceed as scheduled but the news coming out of the Emirates Stadium seems to have forced their hand.

Not only has Arteta gone into self-isolation, but the entire Arsenal squad has also done the same, following contact with their manager while he has had COVID-19.

Naturally, this put the Gunners’ trip to Brighton on Saturday at extreme risk, and later on Thursday evening, it was officially postponed by the Seagulls.

Meanwhile, over the last 14 days, Arsenal’s squad and manager have also been in contact with Portsmouth and West Ham in the FA Cup and Premier League respectively.

Since then, Chelsea midfielder Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.3m) has tested positive for COVID-19 and gone into self-isolation, while his team-mates have also entered into the same protocol.

There have also been subsequent updates from Watford, Everton and Bournemouth on Friday morning revealing a number of Premier League players have gone into self-isolation.

The wider football world will now look ahead to Tuesday when UEFA will convene a video conference between the 55 governing bodies it presides over to discuss the future of European football and the fate of the upcoming 2020 European Championships.

Uefa will need to take in consideration that many nations hosting the Euros are now forbidding large gatherings and public opinion has turned so that they don't want the games to be played next summer.

This happened once before. Years ago, the FPL site crashed on the first day of the season. Some could get in to set up their teams, some couldn't. Everyone got a bonus WC in GW2.

If the next fixtures to played (if that even happens) are different from those previously listed for GW30, then it seems reasonable to give everyone an extra WC. Those of us who have kept one in our pockets still have an extra one. Not that this matters at all in the grand scheme of things, it's only a game about a game etc.

          Understood, we recall that.
The difference there was however it was Fpl's fault and their duty to redress

Good point. But FPL, whoever they are, will also be interested in maximising the number of people who continue to play their game. Players without a WC would effectively have a void/ pointless team if the fixtures are *completely* different from those originally scheduled. They aren't likely to keep playing in that scenario. A free WC would fix that problem, and I reckon FPL will do that - just my hunch though.

              Also a good point.
Personally I would rather they didn't do that. It feels like those of us who've planned for later user are being disadvantaged.
Might feel different though when we see how the reconvened schedule falls.

Just to make everyone's hard work seem even more pointless; I've been on an FPL sabbatical this season. My only team is one I entered into a novelty work league where you are only allowed to pick from 5 randomly assigned teams (taken from seeded pots).

I got Liverpool, Man U, Palace, Bournemouth and Norwich.

My overall rank is 321k based on 21 transfers, no WCs played, TC-ing Mane for his 1 point dgw and generally paying very little attention to it all.

    How's everyone else done? 😛

Inevitable but the right decision. If a few players being ill leads to this, then I can’t see any more games this season.

Only going to get massively worse for the next month, then will take a few months to slowly go down from the peak.

First season I had a good chance of top 10k as well...

I doubt they will be thinking about what is fair for Liverpool if they make a decision and neither should they.

They are so close that they’ll finish that I’m sure. Relegation promotion is a bigger problem. Got to feel for 30 year pool season ticket holders who have waited their whole lives for this if it’s closed doors though. If West Brom Leeds get robbed it will be a big deal

Villa have a game in hand which should have been played against Chelsea's under 12s. Villa would no doubt have won that game 2-1. Villa will of course be given 3 points for that game in hand seeing them safe.

If they cant complete the remaining games, its null and void, no champions, no relegations, no promotions.
Same 4 go to europe for cl next year.
League standings cash for this year, split it evenly amongst the 20 clubs

I fully expect Pool to be readying their lawyers for a fight.
Btw .. not a pool fan. But really harsh on them if the season goes null and void.

The PL 65 day rule means that the season is void if suspended for 65 days or more. There are exactly 65 days to the last day of the scheduled season so if there are no more games that means the season is void.

It’s too late in the season for that. You can’t rob 3 championship clubs of £120 million it would end in court.

I think we will know more after all the UEFA members and league representatives meet on Tuesday - imagine there will be some sort of cross-Europe agreement - CL/EL to scrap qualifying rounds for one year and to start a bit later or something like that to give every league a chance to finish and get back in sync, or something like that.

If the season is null and void we start again next season with the same teams as this season imo. So no champion (bad luck Liverpool), no relegation, no promotion, etc. Hence same teams will get the European spots as this season.

The league will never recommence in April and i don't see how will they be able to catch up on lost games though?

With some players contracts potentially expiring in June meaning clubs won't be able to play those players unless they extend their contract for a month or so. The player may also not want to if they have a pre-arrangement with another club.

              Could get messy

With the number of fixtures left (excluding Europe and FA cup), I reckon you need 5-6 weeks.

Which means anything more than a month delay and it’s impossible without going into June.

If we see Italy as 1-2 weeks ahead. Can you really see a situation where everything is better in 2-3 weeks and Serie A starts again?
