What Premier League suspension means for FPL managers and FFScout

The Premier League have announced that all matches will be suspended until the weekend of April 4, 2020 in light of growing coronavirus (COVID-19) concerns.

That means that there will be no fixtures in Gameweek 30 and Gameweek 31.

That round of action is scheduled to take place after the next international break, although Euro 2020 play-off matches and friendlies are at risk of postponement in light of CONMEBOL already cancelling World Cup qualifiers.

As things stand, no decision has been taken on what the rest of the 2019/20 campaign will look like, or if the season will be declared null and void.

It looks as if the situation will be reviewed again as we approach Gameweek 32 next month while postponed fixtures will be rearranged when possible.

“Despite the challenges, it is the Premier League’s aim to reschedule the displaced fixtures, including those played by Academy sides, when it is safe to do so. In this fast-moving environment, further updates will be provided when appropriate.” – Premier League statement

We will endeavour to bring you a breakdown of the exact impact on FPL as and when we have it.

What does this mean for FFScout?

As a result of the Premier League’s unprecedented, but not unexpected, announcement, we will cease all coverage of the build-up to Gameweek 30 with immediate effect.

We will spend the next few days assessing the situation and working out what content we can produce for the foreseeable future.

In that time, the production of articles, videos and podcasts will temporarily experience a shift in focus until we know more about what the future holds for the Premier League and Fantasy Football.

Over the next few days, we will endeavour to bring you as much news as is relevant to the situation and our focus on FPL strategy will, in line with the gravity of the situation, be stripped back.

We will be temporarily suspending the FFS Cup and Head-to-Head leagues and making a decision further down the line on how best to proceed with the competitions.

What is the latest on coronavirus in football?

The news of the Premier League’s suspension comes in the wake of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta testing positive for COVID-19 in the late hours of Thursday evening.

The Premier League had originally planned to see all Gameweek 30 matches proceed as scheduled but the news coming out of the Emirates Stadium seems to have forced their hand.

Not only has Arteta gone into self-isolation, but the entire Arsenal squad has also done the same, following contact with their manager while he has had COVID-19.

Naturally, this put the Gunners’ trip to Brighton on Saturday at extreme risk, and later on Thursday evening, it was officially postponed by the Seagulls.

Meanwhile, over the last 14 days, Arsenal’s squad and manager have also been in contact with Portsmouth and West Ham in the FA Cup and Premier League respectively.

Since then, Chelsea midfielder Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.3m) has tested positive for COVID-19 and gone into self-isolation, while his team-mates have also entered into the same protocol.

There have also been subsequent updates from Watford, Everton and Bournemouth on Friday morning revealing a number of Premier League players have gone into self-isolation.

The wider football world will now look ahead to Tuesday when UEFA will convene a video conference between the 55 governing bodies it presides over to discuss the future of European football and the fate of the upcoming 2020 European Championships.

For those still in Last Man Standing, take a seat.
No idea on how things change for it.
Less GWs would mean higher % out each week and an early final GW would mean winner takes all in a chipfest.

Has anyone said LFC must be given the League?

The season has not been cancelled.

You are begging for the season to be cancelled when it has been postponed.

Governments all over the world expect this virus to expand much more and rapidly, and by May it will be a full on pandemic. Yes they postponed it now, because they desperately don't want to cancel it. What do people expect will happen in 2-3 weeks? Corona virus gone? It's not going to happen, this season is DONE.

Actually no, the OP's right way around. Currently the FPL site shows the deadline for this GW at 23 hrs, which means we'll get another FT after 23hrs. The deadline for GW31 is also after 8 days, and I assume that will stay as well.

What this means is GW30 and GW31 are both blank weeks, and EVERY team will have at least two double gameweeks if the season is to continue

I expect his will be updated in time (or at least a clearer notice issued on what they have decided) , so as not to fall foul of their own rules. See above.
Time will tell. But whatever they decide they need to make it clear beforehand.

Even if season is cancelled, Liverpool will be awarded the title as they're 99.99% certainty to win it anyway. It's simply the right thing to do, despite the rampant pedentry of some posters on here. It wouldn't effect anyone else either.

Relegation, promotion, CL and EL places voided.

        Thats a legal minefield.
So , do they void champions trophies in the leagues below because of the opposite reason, that the probability of winning was too low. And if so where is our cut off.

Premier League could possibly do it unilaterally.

And the EFL could potentially make the current leaders of the other divisions nominal champions, but without promotion.

I am not a Liverpool Fan but if this causes the season to be declared null and void, it is not fair. The clubs that could mathematically catch them should consent to Liverpool winning the title. Biggest debate would be between clubs in relegation zone or automatic promotion if championship goes down the same route.

It could be that saving a transfer is a mistake.
That we keep the teams, we have and each start with 1FT.

That there will be a wc is more likely imo, as at beginning of the season 8yrs or so ago, when the servers went down and everyone had a wc in gw2.

But ofc most likely is that we keep our Teams and deadline will be postponed.
Stupid to have a Deadline now.
But nexg gw will likely be 32.
And postponed fixtures played after, so that planning was a bit stupid..again a reason for a free wc.. but i dont think they will.
      Its gonna be bad luck

Joking aside, they can’t just be given the title. Either the PL continues and they win it outright or it’s scrapped. There’s no way Pool will be awarded the title without physically winning it, there would be law suits all over the place.

The question of it being voided instead of postponed doesn't have anything to do with Liverpool - it has to do with the virus. It's very possible that this situation continues into the summer. Then what happens? Players will need a pre-season too, if they are not training. If things look better in June, what course of action will be pursued? Play offs seem unfair for obvious reasons in domestic competition. When will the new season begin? And when will it finished, with a Euros in the summer of 2021?

Of course Liverpool have won and will win the title. There is no real doubt about it although it is not mathematically certain.

But how do you cancel a season - cancel promotion, champions league places etc etc but award Liverpool the title? If Liverpool are given the title, is it also correct to give City Champions league football, because they are a healthy margin away from 5th? And where does this approach end?

And if they choose to end the season here - to make the current placings the final placings, how is that fair/will work from a legal point of view?

This is new territory. I expect that the season will be played out but months from now. There is no way that it resumes in April when things will be worse than now.

It is only reasonable to complete this season, although it will be finishing very late, and to settle all promotion, relegation and European qualification issues in the normal way.

If necessary, they might have to shorten next season though.
For a start, they could perhaps cancel the League Cup for one season.
And if that isn't enough, they could just play each other team once instead of twice.
