Eliteserien Bargain Picks under 5.5

Well, it’s been quite the last few weeks since my last article here… However, the Eliteserien will return at some stage (Likely to be in June now) and due to the COVID-19 delay, we’re likely to see a number of double gameweeks due to fixtures having to be more congested this season.

Rotation will likely be heavy and formerly underused players may be given more minutes in the first team in order to allow clubs to rest their star players more often.

Due to this, there are now a number of players in the Eliteserien Fantasy game who could potentially be good picks to have either in your starting XI or as an option from the bench for those weeks when clubs decide to rest their star men.

Here are some players who look to be great value in the game this season and are also valued at a maximum price of 5.5.

Sulayman Bojang (4.5, Sarpsborg 08)

  • Looks set to have somewhat of a breakout season for S08 this year
  • Speedy full back likely to play on the right wing back role in S08’s 3-4-3
  • May not start every game this year but will certainly get minutes this season

Sulayman Bojang may not be a name well known to regular Eliteserien Fantasy players as he spent the 2019 season away from Sarpsborg, playing for Kongsvinger in the OBOS Ligaen. He generally failed to impress during this loan spell and was often left out of the sides’ matchday squad.

However, so far in Sarpsborg’s 2020 pre-season Bojang has been one of the more impressive players featuring on the right hand side of the clubs’ new 3-4-3 formation. Due to a lack of competition in this position, he may end up featuring heavily in this role this season.

Over on Reverse Nisselue, we spoke with Sarpsborg’s Sporting Director Thomas Berntsen about Bojang and the possible impact he could have this season and Berntsen was keen to talk up Bojang’s ability and potential to become a key player this season.

Valued at just 4.5, Bojang is a player I am sure many will consider for their Fantasy teams this season. I personally think his value could comfortably rise this season especially if he becomes a regular in the XI for Sarpsborg.

Hugo Vetlesen (5.5, Stabaek)

  • 20 year old wonderkid who already has over 70 Eliteserien appearances
  • Usually a central midfielder, but could be used out wide in a 4-3-3 this season
  • Poor goal record historically, but could improve on this in his new role

Hugo Vetlesen has long been one of my favourite Eliteserien youngsters. He debuted for Stabaek in 2017 and has been a regular in their squad ever since. Aged 20 now, it is fair to say that Vetlesen has yet to fully live up to his hype, with managers often playing him out of position leading to a lack of consistency in his performances.

Vetlesen may have fallen behind in the Stabaek pecking order in midfield, with the likes of Luc Kassi (6.0), Tortol Lumanza (5.5) and Emil Bohinen (6.0) now clearly ahead of him in the pecking order in midfield.

In pre-season so far this year Vetlesen has often featured out wide in Stabaek’s 4-3-3 formation. This has led to him being increasingly involved in much more of Stabaek’s attacking play than he would normally have done were he playing in central midfield.

It’s about time Vetlesen delivered on his promise and he has a great opportunity to do just that in 2020 for Stabaek, where he will surely continue to get regular minutes in the first team. At 5.5 he may not be someone for your first XI, but is certainly a player to monitor at the start of the season at least as he could quickly become great value for money.

Mustapha Fofana (5.5, Stromsgodset)

  • Young prospect for Stromsgodset, likely to start as 3rd choice but could become 2nd
  • Scored his first Eliteserien goal in 2019
  • Able to play in most forward positions and is a natural striker

Finding a striker for 5.5 or under in the 2020 Eliteserien Fantasy is a very tough ask. Many forwards have had their prices jacked up and are highly inflated at this stage due to the lack of quality new additions to the league this season & many high profile departures.

Mustapha Fofana is a player I watched closely in 2019. He may not have started a game for Stromsgodset but tended to look lively off the bench and certainly made an impression on those watching him.

A skilful forward able to pick up space between the opposition lines, Fofana managed to get in good goalscoring positions last season despite generally only coming off the bench for the final 15 minutes or so of most matches.

Fofana has 2 goals in 5 appearances for the Norway U18 side and a good return of 7 goals in 10 games for Stromsgodset’s B team last season. With Lars-Jørgen Salvesen (8.5) the sides’ talisman up front, Fofana may struggle to start games for his side this season but I suspect he could be used as an impact sub in matches and may eventually challenge for a place out wide in Stromsgodset’s 4-3-3 formation this season.

A riskier pick than my other suggestions here, but a player I have great confidence will go on and become a strong Eliteserien player in the future. As I mentioned before, finding a striker for under 5.5 in the game this year is nigh on impossible but Fofana may end up being something of a hidden gem in the game this year.

Thanks for hearing me out & I hope you’re all keeping well currently, given the state of the outside world. Football may not be at the forefront of our minds right now but I can’t wait for the Eliteserien season to resume.

Which strikers valued under 5.5 do you think could have a good impact for their respective clubs this season? Let me know in the comments.

    First and foremost - sorry!

Ben was kind enough to write this about a month ago but it's been stuck in our system a while due to some behind-the-scenes issues we are trying to sort. Nothing major, just one of those things that's a lot slower to fix now due to the ongoing pandemic. Big apologies to Ben and the community for the delay.

With that being said, thanks for writing this! Seems an interesting pricing pattern this year, interesting to see where the gems come from.

June 16 is the date Eliteserien will start! Plan is to have a full season finishing within the calendar year, that means 30 rounds in 6.5 months. Going to be a wild ride!

Guessing they've started working on the new schedule already so won't be long before we can start building our squads again.

Also, for those of you wondering how mad about fantasy Norwegians actually are; TV2 here in Norway have acquired the rights for showing games from the top divison on the Faero Islands. They've also created a fantasy game for it, league starts tomorrow: https://fantasy.tv2.no/

Sorry if this has been posted before already

First 5-6 GWs will mostly consist of local games to keep the traveling levels down. So lots of derbies to start off with and some teams will play each other both home/away very early on. New fixture list will apparently be out next week.

First 6 GWs will be drawn live on tv on Saturday. Each team will play home/away against the other teams in their 'region':

    A) Molde, Rosenborg, Kristiansund, Aalesund
    B) Brann, Haugesund, Viking, Bodø/Glimt
    C) Start, Odd, Sandefjord, Strømsgodset*
    D) Sarpsborg, Vålerenga, Stabæk, Mjøndalen*

*Strømsgodset/Mjøndalen may switch groups, that's not confirmed yet.

At first sight that's a brutal start for Molde. 6 rivalries in their first 6 GWs means a triple up on their expensive players probably isn't worth it.

Yup. They dropped the idea of playing home+away vs the same teams in the first 6 GWs because it didn't feel authentic and it would somewhat have ruined the league experience.

They've just revealed the first 3 GWs for now because they're waiting for the UEFA meeting next week. They want some clarity regarding EL/CL schedule for next season before committing to a longer fixture list. Also if there are no international breaks that frees up 6 extra weekends + midweeks for domestic games.

Think I'd go with Hauge. Seems to have kept up the attacking stats in pre-season, for what that's worth now. And takes pens & free kicks. Numbers from Tom the Dud in the last thread: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/21817923

          Goalkeepers

Sandberg (6.0, Stabæk) - Still one of the best GKs in the league, good fixtures for Stabæk and decent defence

Sandvik (5.5, Haugesund) - Decent goalkeeper and one of the better defences

Klaesson (5.0, Vålerenga) - First choice for Vålerenga, major talent and a more defensively minded manager has come in

4.5 keepers to look at: Myhra (Strømsgodset), Deumeland (Start), Lie (Aalesund)

Avoid: McDermott (injured for a few months), Kongshavn (2nd choice)

          Defenders

Haugen (6.5, Molde) - Top defensive choice IMO, but it comes with a risk. Missed final two friendlies, but he's fit for GW1. Kitolano is a new option at LB and rotation is expected. Molde looks shaky at the back, but only Stølås beats him for attacking potential

Desler (5.5, Haugesund) - Attacking full back in a decent Haugesund defense

Hanche-Olsen (5.5, Stabæk) or Solheim (5.0, Stabæk) - Nailed in the Stabæk defence, Hanche-Olsen more bonus potential and goal threat from set-pieces. Solheim assist potential from full back

Gregersen (5.0, Molde) - First choice with Bjørnbak at CB due to lack of options. Cheap option in last years best defence, but they look a bit shaky

Borchgrevink (5.0, Vålerenga) - First choice attacking full back at Vålerenga. Decent talent, breakthrough expected. Some rotation threat with Nouri lurking.

Bojang (4.5, Sarpsborg) - Sarpsborg has a very good team this year, good pre-season results and Bojang is an attacking wing back. You want him in your team, and I would advice you to actually make a plan where you will start him a lot.

Avoid: Haraldseid (injured for the rest of the season), Stølås (struggling with a toe injury, could be fit for GW1 but he's not 100%), Psyche (closer to being 4th choice at CB than starting), Jonassen (not expected to start GW1), Meling (might be sold very soon and not expected to start because of contract situation)

          Midfielders

Eikrem (12.5, Molde) - No explanation needed, but it's up to debate if it's worth getting him over James

Helland (11.0, Rosenborg) - Main man on Rosenborg this year. Set-pieces and penalties. Injury prone, just recovered from a minor injured. Early subs? Comeback season?

Finne (9.0, Vålerenga) - Gets into the box a lot, a lot of set-pieces. Maybe slightly overpriced? Could have a good season IMO

Maigaard (8.5, Strømsgodset) - Insane amount of bonus points last year. Amazing player, will rack up bonus points and assists, potentially on penalties

Zachariassen (8.5, Rosenborg) - Arguably the best player in the league, decent point tally last 3 seasons at Sarpsborg. Expected to be more attacking than ever, loads of bonus and a decent amount of goals + assists expected

Zinckernagel (8.0, Bodø/Glimt) - Attacking player, a lot of set-pieces, could take penalties if JP Hauge leaves. Not sure what to expect for B/G and opening fixtures aren't good, but he's the pick at B/G in my opinion if Hauge is leaving.

Sandberg (7.5, Haugesund) - All set-pieces as long as Stølås doesn't play, penalty taker, both goal threat and assist potential.

Gall (7.0, Stabæk) - Differential option. Only played one friendly for Stabæk yet. Great player, takes a lot of set-pieces, great numbers from Sweden. Monitor if he starts in GW1, but I believe he could have a big season

Ibrahimaj (7.0, Viking) - Viking look a bit clueless going forward, but his set-pieces are still very good so I'd still expect assists.

Edvardsen (6.5, Stabæk) - Scored two goals in the last three games last season for Stabæk. Scored a lot of goals in the third tier in Norway last year first half of the season. Could be on for a breakthrough, but also a gamble/differential like Gall.

Saletros (5.0, Sarpsborg) - Plays a deeper role in the midfield 5, but he's on all set-pieces and is a top, top player at this level in Eliteserien. Scored and created LOADS of chances vs. Start in the final friendly. Bonus and assists incoming for a cheap price!

Avoid: Every Molde midfielder not named Eikrem, Bohinen (rumoured to be sold before GW1, plays deep, Gall takes a share of his set-pieces)

          Forwards

James (12.0, Molde) - The top forward pick. And yes, he is fit.

Børven (11.0, Odd) - Honestly I think he's too expensive and I don't expect too much for Odd, his contract also expiring this summer.. Opening fixture is great though and ownership + captaincy numbers will be very high. You don't want to be on the wrong side of that.

Islamovic (10.5, Rosenborg) - Wait and see for me, BUT there is a serious lack of competition and a Rosenborg striker should score goals. That makes him a viable pick from GW1, despite him not having the best goal scoring record.

Salvesen (8.5, Strømsgodset) - A tad expensive, but scored a lot of goals towards the end of last season and I'd still expect a few goals from him this year.

Vilhjalmson (8.0, Vålerenga) - Another player that could be worth monitoring first, but his price is cheaper this year and strikers under Fagermo usually score a few goals (Børven at Odd last year)

Strand Larsen (7.5, Sarpsborg) - Good things expected from Sarpsborg and Strand Larsen. Didn't live up to the hype last year, could it be his year? New manager has said he's the first choice striker.

Kallman (7.0, Haugesund) - Cheaper option at Haugesund. First choice until Wadji returns after the first 8 GWs. Scored a few goals for Viking at the end of last season and scored a few in pre-season.

Kinoshita (6.0, Stabæk) - I don't rate him that highly, but he is the first choice striker (and the only fit one) at a decent Stabæk side with good fixtures at the moment

Avoid: Ohi (not fit atm and not first choice), Berisha (Viking doesn't look good attacking wise), Bamba (this could backfire, but I'd like to see how good Brann will be this year before paying 9.0), Junker (not first choice), Mos Abdellaoue (not first choice)

Niklas Castro - the Chilean national team player - perhaps the attacking pivot in the newly promoted team.

In pre-season he played 433 out of a possible 630 minutes.
He played at least 45 minutes in all friendlies for Aalesunds FK.
In that time he managed to get 4 goals and 1 assist.
One caveat, though, is that 3 of his goals came in one match - not sure how representative that is at this level.
According to match reports, in those 7 friendlies, he also missed another big chance, and created three mentionable chances that did not lead to a goal.
He also scored Aalesunds' only pre-season penalty, and match reports mentioned him taking at least one direct and one indirect freekick.
Beware, though, AaFK starts off against three potentially resilient defenses in the first three rounds.
              Watch and see, perhaps?

All of this information was found in the spreadsheet mentioned in the comment below ^^

Wow! More information than I expected! He seems like a promising player. I decided to put him in my team more out of gut feeling as a differential. Yes he is expensive but that is also a good thing as I can easily transfer him out for Zachariesen for examble. This season with the "spike" in the prices they made it more challenging to get everyone in the team so you have to be picky. Initially I feel many will follow a template but sooner or later they will have to break from that. Im wondering if the team value will increase like the years before. Last season i didn;t play the rich uncle chip as my team value was so high i could get anyone i wanted anyways. I am very excited for fantasy Elite to start as I am playing it from year one despite I am not Norwegian or used to watch Norwegian football. But I managed to get decent rankings (5777, 2005 and last year 2308 despite starting in gw2) due to a transfers strategy I applied which seems that worked out (wish i could do the same in fpl). Good luck to all and if you have any other league I can join apart from ffs please share the code!

I actually think Aalesund could be weakened due to key players leaving, but there are some new "unknown" players. Don't know what to expect from them. Castro is very interesting and I am monitoring him closely, but for me a way to expensive punt to start the season with

Latest change to my draft... Haraldseid out, Bojang in 🙂

Anyone here spending 24.5m and doubling up on Eikrem & James?

Unless you want to go Helland or Islamovic, it could happen ^^

How about Helland and James combo - leaving a Molde place for Brynhildsen? He has started all three friendlies after his transfer from Stabæk.

Helland is not a bad shout. Currently have 3x Molde and only Zachariassen from Rosenberg.

Worked in Trondheim but my girlfriend back then was from Molde. But that was a LONG time ago!

Do you need information about the pre-season for Eliteserien 2020?

            Look no further ^^

The spreadsheet below has info on minutes played, goals, assists, and to a certain extent chances created and chances missed, from ALL pre-season friendlies.

It also has a rough Set Pieces map, and a sheet with fixtures ranked by difficulty (through colouring).

            Enjoy! ^^

Let's look at the current ownership numbers. 🙂

          Goalkeepers:

          1) McDermott - 23% (injured!)
          2) Sandberg - 21%
          3) Austbo - 16%

          Defenders:

          1) Psyche - 42%
          2) Bjorkan - 31%
          3) Hanche-Olsen - 26%

          Midfielders:

          1) Zacheriassen - 37%
          2) Bohinen - 36% (Not expected to be around much longer.)

Oh great. Already had at least 6 of this in my team and now the world and his wife knows.

Seriously, thanks for the heads-up. Didn't know about McDermott and Haraldseid - now switched.

Any views on Jansen of Mjondalen? Apart from that he needs a bloody good haircut.

I think Mjøndalen are a dreadful team and I wouldn't go there. Had a good goalscoring record in the second tier, so who knows. I'd rather go Ulvestad at Kristiansund. Poor year last season, but the two previous seasons he had 15ish bonus points as well as 4 goals in 2018. Might be over the top now, but he is nailed and Kristiansund aren't an easy team to face.

Also monitor Høibråten at B/G, could be good if he gets a starting spot

You're probably right. And terrible shirts as well. I already have Silvertsen as a cheap punt on a KBK starting berth (had Pyscho from the start last season but have to let him go this time).

Last season was quite happy to go slightly top-heavy in defence (Stolas, The Worm etc.). Not sure there are many outstanding candidates this time - yet. So probably start with the conventional 3-4-3 and have a defence bench 'for' as 5th sub.

Now that would be interesting. From your post above looked at switching Eikrem+Zachariassen to Helland +.....? Can't find any Midfielder at 11.5m worth it, so would mean substantial reshuffle of multiple players.

Borven (ROS) and Eikrem is a different kettle of fish though.

Thanks for your useful posts. I have no modern insight at all into Norwegian football other than my affection for the country from 43 years ago.

Draft 2 of my team looks like this:

          Austbo, Klaesson;
          Silvertsen, Solheim, Haugen, Bojang, Nasberg;
          Berg, Eikrem, Zachariasson, Saletros, Ibrahimaj;
          Kallman, James, Strand Larsen.
          1.0m itb.

Not sure about Solheim. Might upgrade to Hanche-Olsen or Desler. But ideally would find another 4.5m starter to go Ibrahimaj > Castro if the latter comes good.

But with two games a week, going to need a decent bench. Defenders more likely to get game minutes than strikers, so could rip this right up and start again before Tuesday with more heavy hitters in defence.

Definitely spent too much on keepers, especially considering Austbø could have strong competition. I'll probably go with Sandvik and a 4.0m until his fixtures turn bad. 4.5m bracket not as strong this year.

Castro is exciting but I think Ibrahimaj will be exceptional value, would definitely keep him.

I have 0.5 to spare in my current draft. Is it worth upgrading Ammitzbøll to Kallman, or somehow free up an extra 0.5 and get Strand Larsen?

I'm likely to play 3-5-2 with James alongside a cheaper striker.

Not surprised that Ben's tips still look good a couple of months after he wrote them. Good summary from Niemi too.

I've submitted a preview looking at last season's top half teams so hopefully we can have a newer article ahead of kickoff. Will get on to the bottom half and newly promoted teams, although I know less about the latter (annoying when the team you follow closely gets relegated, that's a chunk of my knowledge gone). Barely commented for months but am more excited for the Scandinavian leagues to start than I am for PL to resume, especially from a fantasy perspective
