De Bruyne set to dictate Gameweek 34+ for FPL’s top 10k managers

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.8m) is set to hold massive sway over the outcome of Gameweek 34+.

The Belgian has been captained by a whopping 65.5% of the top 10,000 FPL managers ahead of Wednesday’s meeting with Newcastle United.

It has been some time since a player enjoyed such a large majority in the scrap for the armband, which has made for effective ownership inside the top 10k of 161.6%.

By comparison, Bruno Fernandes (£8.9m) has received backing from just 19.9% of the top 10k for the midweek trip to Aston Villa.

The Portuguese international still enjoys effective ownership at this level of 112.7% but those who have handed him the armband will be sincerely hoping De Bruyne somehow underperforms, given how many have captained him instead.

As Fernandes and De Bruyne are the two players with over 100% effective ownership in the top 10k this week, those who went outside of the pair for captaincy will be feeling the nerves in Gameweek 34+.

After Fernandes, Mohamed Salah (£12.6m) is the third-most-popular captain option among this season’s best managers, backed by just 3.9% of them.

For all of Bournemouth’s poor defending since the restart, just 2.5% have decided to captain Harry Kane (£11.0m), and 2.3% went for Anthony Martial (£8.3m) ahead of the trip to Villa Park.

In fact, both Kane and Spurs colleague Son Heung-min (£9.8m) act as differentials for Gameweek 34+ as neither player comes into the round owned by more than a quarter of managers in the top 10k.

The South Korean is the more popular of the two, owned by 24.1%, while Kane sits on just 16.3%. Potentially exciting for those who have decided to play the fixture, as well as ominous for those not convinced by Spurs’ form.

As you can see from the table above, neither player was able to break into the loose template among the top 10k.

The most notable new faces are the budget options, namely Mason Greenwood (£4.6m) and Phil Foden (£5.4m).

The Manchester United forward’s brace was enough for him to form the perfect replacement for Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.4m), who is still goalless since the Premier League restart.

Interestingly, Foden breaks into the template at the expense of Christian Pulisic (£7.2m), but not because the American dropped in ownership.

Before rewarding his owners in the Gameweek 34+ trip to Crystal Palace, Pulisic’s backing in the top 10k rose by 1.2 percentage points.

Foden’s support rose by a larger margin, resulting in 29.3% ownership in the top 10k for the upcoming meeting with Newcastle – although out of the two, Pulisic marginally edges effective ownership (28.3% to 28.2%) on account of receiving more attention for the captain’s armband.

Martial continues to turn the screw on his ownership, each week adding another steady increase, this time at the expense of Salah.

The Frenchman has risen from 42.2% top 10k ownership to 51% while Salah has dropped from 58.6% to 46.3%.

By comparison, there has been very little change in defence, as can be expected with the Gameweeks running out for Fantasy managers.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka‘s (£5.5m) one-pointer against Bournemouth has cost him roughly 5% ownership in the top 10k, with Serge Aurier (£5.0m) overtaking him as the fifth-most-popular defender.

The best Fantasy managers of 2019/20 have been somewhat sparing with their chips in Gameweek 34+.

Just 2% of them deployed their Wildcard for the midweek round, although it was the most popular chip played before Tuesday’s deadline.

It means that 6.3% of managers in the top 10k are saving the second Wildcard for use between now and Gameweek 38+, although they only have four more opportunities before the end of the campaign.

The Wildcard template for Gameweek 34+ is not hugely different from the overall squad picture in the top 10k.

The midfield five remain the same, with some slight ownership differences, while Emiliano Martínez (£4.3m) is, not surprisingly, preferred to David Button (£3.9m) as the back-up goalkeeper.

Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.0m) was included by 30% of Gameweek 34+ Wildcarders although he immediately disappointed as Chelsea conceded twice at Crystal Palace.

Of particular interest is the choice of forwards, especially as that position has proved hard to be excited by recently.

Greenwood was an overwhelming favourite of these Wildcarders, with Raúl Jiménez (£8.3m) doing just enough to stay in 53% of new-look squads. With little else of great options, it is Danny Ings (£7.3m) who proved to be the third-most-popular forward among Gameweek 34+ Wildcarders in the top 10k.

A smattering of the top 10k managers Free Hitted for Gameweek 34+, although still only 1.4% of them.

It means that the majority of those operating at this level, just over 56%, are waiting for the perfect time to play the temporary Wildcard, perhaps with Gameweek 38+ in mind.

As for those who pulled the trigger on it for the midweek action, there was a heavy focus on Manchester City, Manchester United and Spurs.

Kane and Son both feature in the Free Hit template, as do De Bruyne, Fernandes, Foden and Greenwood.

Our boy Jamie produced the goods again against Arsenal. A vital point and we are still hanging in there for Europe.

Let's see how Bournemouth cope with Mr Kane. Surely Howe will tighten up a little because conceding 5 every match will lead inexorably to the Championship.

From what I’ve seen they got walloped by Utd and could only scrape a 1 goal win over Norwich!

Ings & DCL both have ridiculous last 3’s, but Puli & Willian are the form runners

Jimmy has to go to one of those 4 with 2 FT’s next week...

Ings just also allows Lundy > Digne which I like the look of as a punt for last 3

Sell. He ain't getting much mins. Lampard doesn't fancy him. Azpi and James first choice full backs in 4-4-2. Alonso seemingly scores his hauls a 3-5-2. With top 4 push I don't think lamps will trust him after west ham debacle.

    4. Eze Really?
      • 9 Years
      3 years, 9 months ago

Reading the Daily Espresso this morning, they wrote fans want Christiensen out with Rudiger to follow. Now Zouma is ok who was loaned out last year because he was not good enough. He had a good game yesterday but he will also have a bad game sometime and Chelsea will get ripped apart on the counter.
Alonso dropped for not getting back to defend and even Azpi struggling to defend being caught forward is partly due to instructions given by Lampard..
Everyone waxes lyrical about the forwards and they do look good, but I put it Lampard is the culprit.
You need to have a Le Mans race engine to work on the flanks in that team. High pressing and losing the ball creates all kinds of problems. The central defenders are exposed on the counter. At least play 3 central defenders if you want to play that way. On top of that, Lampard has been forced to play youngsters and it is clear Chelsea objective is to make money by buying young and selling when the age of 30 is reached. Mount, Pulisic, Gilmore are good players but their inexperience lets them down in certain situations.
Trading central defenders will not solve the problem.

      1. Eze Really?

Fully disagree; we don’t press like.. say... Liverpool; it’s far more measured and situational. I’ve watched boneheaded error after error from The Christensens, Zoumas, Luizs, etc over the recent years. They aren’t having too much asked of them, we just need steadier players. Zouma has improved and I prefer Rudiger to pair him, but ideally we need two better players in that position and they would be squad depth. All that said, none of this matters when your goalkeeper has the lowest save % in the league. With DDG, we concede 10 fewer goals a year over the dinks we’ve had between the sticks. It’s talent and recruitment.

"Bonehead errors stand out in defense" For sure you make good points, but the gap between defense and attack without protection will ask for trouble. There are many grey areas and I am highlighting one of them. Zouma was a good Everton asset. One of the few things that worked at Everton last year (smile)

Always wary of sentences containing the old classic “fans want...”

They create the delusion that (a) a huge portion of fans are anything other than utter, utter idiots who don’t know know their footballing arse from their elbow (b) that “fans” becomes some sort of God-Like singular entity - that all fans somehow have the same opinion

It’s usually an indicator of catering to the kind of lowest common denominator, sensationalist “everybody says” type nonsense that helps tabloids and unscrupulous chancers like Trump sway the more naive, more militant and more easily led of society

I agree. Was not the subject matter I was referring to really. I am saying if people moan about defenders, sometimes there must be some context other than " they are bad". Ad Nausuem I have seen large amounts of cash being paid for centre backs and they fail because it was the system or the partnership that does not work, rather than the player.

Yeah absolutely - not having a go at you 🙂

Chelsea are suffering possibly from a bit of player availability-driven churn i think - they currently have 8 defenders who have played over 1000 minutes this season, that must be more than most if not all other teams in the league - very hard to get consistency of defensive results with that type of inconsistency of defensive personnel

Their underlying defensive stats are also very odd:

            - They're in the bottom 6 for cleansheets on the season (7) yet are top of the league for minimising errors leading to goals (only 2 all season)
            - They are excellent at stopping crosses - only Liverpool & City conceded less crosses than them
            - Same on conceding shots in the box - they're top of the league apart from City/Pool
            - They're also excellent on XGc - on 34.5 XGc all season (Liverpool are top with 32.0)
            - Yet they have *by far* the worst XGc delta in the league with +11.5

Its probably just highlighting more the logical fallacy that many of us engage in an almost day to day basis- i.e. thinking that underlying stats are a panacea that somehow help predict the FPL future

There are vast swathes of data in the members area, Opta, FPL, and the world at large that make absolutely no sense, and have absolutely no use from a predictive perspective

Placebo effect often springs to mind when i think of how much we lean on stats sometimes, and when we assume that any FPL points we obtain from their use is anything other than coincidental

                Including Chelsea's defence!

The eye test has always worked for me, but I do have a level of interest in stats. However, my experience in professional football as a player and coach allows me to see a few things that help me get a small percentage edge on others.
Let us be honest, when choosing a captain, a bench boost a triple captain etc, the lottery effect takes hold.
There will never be a set of stats that can predict the future in any reliable way in this game.
                  Cheers

      Hey guys,

I have 2 free transfers, should I go for Jimi and Mahrez to Vardy and Foden?

Or do I keep Mahrez and downgrade TAA instead?

Or I have the exact funds to do Jimenez and Ederson to Vardy and Reina. Do I do this?

      Cheers!

But I have the exact funds to do Ederson to Reina and then play Reina whilst benching Pope vs Liverpool, then play Pope for the rest of the season.

Then i go Jimi to Vardy which allows me to keep Mahrez

He can´t play the same players every game with that schedule but to guess when is difficult. Giroud only plays 60+ so it might be because he wants him to start every game, and he saw it did not work properly vs West ham. Possibly we get a leak before the Norwich game. As you say, short turnaround so could ring some changes.

Leicester looked poor & laboured tbh

They are so missing Pereira & Chilwell, it’s killing them - Pérez & Tielemans both had poor games I thought

Vardy, on the other hand, looked sharp again, and single handedly saved them *again*

Yeah he’s nailed into my team, he was in my GW1 lineup & I foolishly sold on early WC, but got him in 2 weeks before Southampton demolition & he’s never left since

He setup a goal for nacho that was disallowed, put another sitter on a plate that nacho messed up, missed a decent chance himself, then scored - he’s back
