Pro Pundits - Lateriser

The ‘glue guys’ who will be set-and-forget FPL options on my Gameweek 3 Wildcard

Lateriser, who finished 30th in the world last season, discusses the Fantasy assets who he’ll be sticking with over the coming weeks and months.

I am one of many managers who is deploying their Wildcard right now and one of the reasons for that is the emergence of a few ‘glue guys’ – that and the fact that I’ve had a terrible start, and my overall rank is around the 4.5 million mark.

Glue guys are the kind of picks in a particular ‘value’ price bracket that you just need to set in your team and forget about for a long time because they will continue to offer bang for buck for the mid-to-long term.

It’s important to filter these out because if you’re Wildcarding this early in the season, you need to get these picks right so that your team has enough stability.

It’s the emergence of these glue guys and a few long-term trends that I’m particularly comfortable ‘banking’ on that has me Wildcarding early. It was the similar emergence of assets like Caglar Soyuncu (£5.5m), John Lundstram (£5.5m) and Todd Cantwell early last season that instilled me with confidence to Wildcard early.

So who are the ‘glue guys’ that I’m looking at early this season?

Tariq Lamptey (£4.5M)

Brighton look like a different team this season, especially with the addition of highly-rated Ben White (£4.5m) in their side. They have been very impressive in the first two games and look to me like a team that is going to do much better than they did last year.

What Tariq Lamptey (£4.5m) gives us is the ability to provide points at both ends of the pitch at a cut-price rate.

What is FPL Upside Chasing and how can I implement it in 2020/21?

Are we getting to see the best of Havertz now that he's been deployed centrally?

Showed signs against Liverpool however the red card changed the dynamics.

I'm currently planning on going with Havertz on my WC especially as I don't have Werner

I'll be going with Son and then will review in a few weeks once Puli and Ziyech back in team, easy swap to Havertz then if firing.

Was at CF against Liverpool. Calling Barnsley's defense Sunday League level would be extremely generous, I wouldn't look at the performance too closely. What's hopeful is Lamps sees that this is Kai's best position and uses him there, could improve Werner's output against WBA.

Was planning on transferring him out (not using WC) but I think now he is going to stay at least for the WBA game. Yes the hat trick was against Barnsley but still his confidence should now be higher and that no doubt increases his potential.

Do you know the quality of the opponent?

Barnsley very nearly got relegated to League One last season and so far in the league this year they have lost the two games they have played conceding three goals and scoring none.

Even Benteke could grab a hat trick against them.

So it doesn’t mean we are “getting to see the best” of him.

    Martinez
    Semedo - Saiss - James
    Salah - KdB - Son - Havertz - Foden
    Jiménez - DCL

    Subs: Steer, Lamptey, Brewster, Mitchell

    ++ love the mid/fwds
-- no liverpool defender, expectation is that wolves fixtures can compensate
-- Foden/James rotation risks which segways into
-- lacks durability with Mitchell not a great option and brewster a non-option at this time although that may change

I like it. Obvious risk is no TAA.

How much have you guessed that Semedo will be, 5.5?

On WC myself and I wish this Brewdog move would finally materialise, hoping for WBA or Sheff United. Mitch is fine, just swap to Ferguson later if he takes Ward's spot.

Surprised by the amount of managers using their wildcard tbh, so much can change still. Quite happy keeping it in the back pocket for now and waiting for more data and the transfer window shutting. Think this season more than any other could be one where the wildcards are very precious

Well there is a case in point. I want a bit more time to see how often/how well Podence plays, whether Semedo is the best wolves D option, Foden’s gametime etc etc

agreed on all three of these, for me also whether brighton, leeds, villa etc will be the go to for dependable cheap squad players

other obvious reason to hold that I've not seen mentionned often is the threat of squads being decimated due to +ve case in camp (West Ham this week as an example)

not to mention DGW that already involves City v Villa and United v Burnley

It's mighty tempting, but of course we'd all like a new team every week.

Yeah Man U are a big factor as well, I assume most WCers arent too focussed on getting a man u player after their one performance of the season so far. If rashford scores a brace at the weekend all of a sudden hes a hot option

I agree entirely. Seems likely at some point that there may be more disruption to the schedule, so tripling up with wildcards is putting all eggs in one basket. Had a good start, 147 atm, and taken -4 this week as part of rolling transfer plan to keep abreast of fixtures. Keeping wildcard for stormy weather.

Started the season with Alli without having any prescience of the Mourinho fallout. Also had Doc and Lloris because I liked what they did post restart, and thought the standard Mou defence was back

This was enough for a GW2 WC, so I hit it

Something will go wrong again at around... GW8, judging by my track record

I don't let it get to me too much anyway. It's meant to be a fun game 🙂

I remember Yarmolenko's injury far too often though

I think your team was fine pre-WC. Only really needed to transfer Alli out (maybe for a -4 to raise funds for an upgrade)

Actually, I'd have hit a GW3 WC to get my GW2 team if I delayed it

Lloris to Martinez (once the Villa move was confirmed, I was definitely getting him), I watched Everton play and knew Rodriguez wasn't enough, S'oton looked terrible (even though Ings' stats were good) and I preferred Wolves' new attacking intent, 8.0 to 8.5m mids went into a coma

I could have kept Barnes, but preferred Zaha long term as a striker. That was 50:50 until the last day, so not a WC reason

Could have kept Shaw, but preferred the Saiss fixtures and insane goal threat on set pieces (again, Wolves attacking more, so more set pieces)

It wasn't an overhaul, but I didn't want to do any of that with hits

Maybe not that badly that much but things in 38 weeks certainly go wrong lots, granted you're right not all wrong things need a wildcard. Idk second one feels more useful with chips dgw etc

I dont think WCing now is a bad idea if people’s teams are looking really bad, but I dont think its the optimal time to wildcard from an ‘attacking’ stance when we have a lot of missing information

Yeah, I have to agree. Feels like managers who’re doing it so early have been forced into it by poor GW1 team selection.

There are possible upsides to doing so, but they’re overstated to retro-fit the WC decision IMO.

Is it poor gw1 team selection or is it that we have only had 2 gw’s (1 gw for some teams) and their picks just havent had enough time to come good yet?

And transferring united players out is a key part of that. People planned pre season to have multiple of Bruno/martial/Rashford/greenwood and they’re all gone based on the strength of one poor performance because they think they’ve identified season keepers after 2 gameweeks

Yeah, and look at how poor Spurs were in their first game, they were written off... then next game their two attackers scored about 50 points between them

            2. @persecuted_by_mods
                4 years, 1 month ago

I'm the opposite, I've had two very good weeks but also have an understanding that my team was crap, carried in week 1 by a Salah hattrick and in week 2 by a DCL hattrick and Justin goal. I had too many non point scoring players, yes only 2 weeks of data but the likes of Alli McCarthy B Davies Soucek as a starter are most likely worth shipping, Soucek can come back later. Wildcard to attack the fixtures

Why is your team crap? Alli is a sell from those, but what makes you think (for example) any 4.5m keeper will be better than McCarthy this season just based on 2 gameweeks?

                  1. @persecuted_by_mods
                      4 years, 1 month ago

All of those are a sell from me, and it's not just they need to be sold, it's what I can get in return, saiss with wolves fixtures or keep Davies? Could backfire but I don't think it will. McCarthy is partly based on 2 weeks partly based on Ralph bemoaning no replacement for Hjoberg

Same here. Went for Sterling and now thinking should have played safe with KDB. Poor captaincy choices so far Mane week 1 and Auba week 2.

I went KDB but Sterling is a good option too and I really want him for that Leeds game. I might even sell Salah for him for the Leeds game and double up

More tempted by a free hit than wildcard GW4 with Pool, Wolves, City Everton fixtures, but lose value this time of year.

Triple Wolves and Triple City on WC feels like the way to go, exploit the teams great quality and excellent fixtures.

Wolves fixtures turn in GW10, plenty of time. The likes of Jimenez and Saiss/Semedo can be long term picks, correct? City's fixtures never turn besides two weeks in GW8-9. So, no need for another WC! I'm glad to be ahead of the managers that aren't playing theirs.

There are other teams with other great fixtures and players that can go long-term as well. Then you can focus on fixtures here and there... Say, a 2nd/3rd City asset and a second Wolves asset can be sold when fixtures turn. This is much harder with two triple-ups

Would have been a lot more logical if Wolves and City assets were by far the best in the league, but there are other options, and especially in this uncertain period, spreading the risk counts for a lot

That's a fair approach, if you want to spread the risk. I've never considered that, so I'm not worried about it.

Alright then. Should work for you too, and these are great long-term fixture-proof assets anyway. I only disagree with a 6 to 8-game fixture block as a reason for a WC when the next WC is 14 games away

It's hard to justify the third City asset.

                    Sterling vs Salah

                    Jesus vs Werner/Martial/Son/Ings

Prefer Jesus over all 4 of those options, and maybe Sterling over Salah for the next 4. To each to their own, though.

I am along the same line of thinking as you. On a WC so far - have double Pool, triple Wolves, and either - double Everton + double City or triple City + single Everton

Coming around to the idea of leaving some money ITB on WC to eventually upgrade Jrod to a Chelsea midfielder. I have DCL now so happy with the double up short term with Everton.

Who is everyone's pick in midfield for CHE? I really want Pulisic but may just cater for Ziyech for now.....

who would you play this week Bellerin or Mitchell? Have both Rodriguez and Salah so would have an attacker vs either of them.

alternative is getting in Lamptey for Bellerin, although that would take transfers to a -8 this week

                  Salah - KDB (C) - Hamez - Podence
                  Werner - Martial - Adams

(Steer) (Justin - Mitchell - Bissouma)

                  James, Lamptey, TAA, Sais, Mitch

                  DLC Werner Mitro

Ideally would want Jiminez but difficult to leave out son or werner (who I think is due to fire) at the minute. Also unsure re Mitro or Bamford, Mitro edging for me as on pens. Thanks all

The new format for the captaincy poll is good, provided the results are released on Friday night.

By not being able to see the current results, it takes away the bias that people have to pick the option that is leading.

                  McCarthy (Nyland)
                  TAA Saiss James (Mitchell Dunn)
                  Son Havertz Zaha KDB (Anguissa)
                  DCL Werner Jimi

Thoughts on this lot? Seems real balanced, tossing up whether to get Kane in, a bit anxious about the double up on chelsea!

Am I the only one still unsure on whether DCL is the better option over Richarlison? Am I reading too much from the stats?

Richarlison is the better option if you have the money for sure. Has looked more dangerous in the past games

Stats and eye test suggest Rich, but outcomes suggest DCL. Can't decide whether it's luck or better positional awareness.

For me it would be debatable if they were the same price or if Rich was still MID. Right now it's clearly DCL.

I think Richy will ultimately be the highest to benefit from the quality Rodi service. Already getting assists, will soon be in the goal groove. Getting closer each game.

                  (C) choice is doing my head for the first time this season...

                  1) Salah - home form always favours him.
I am not sure how to read Arsenal defence under Arteta - whether it actually improved or not, it’s different view on that every game in my opinion.

                  2) Werner - WBA defensive stats against favours him by a mile. He might be due, but still not really impressed by Chelsea side. Maybe Havertz great game last night will improve the whole team and boost these guys..?

                  3) Sterling - LEI defence doesn’t convince me at all, especially now when there are is no JEvans nor Ndidi now. MCI always goes for goals and Sterling will be hungry after his fellow attackers - Jesus and Kev - have already scored theirs

                  Thoughts..? 😉

Sterling - West Brom's defence isn't good, but until the red card they were keeping Everton at bay, and that was without Ivanovic.

Werner. Judging him against a well organised Brighton and Lpool is premature. First goal will burst the dam. Chelsea to get five and Werner to get his share.

                  Hey all,

Mark, Luke (a.k.a. d1sable) and I recorded FPL Black Box Episode 4 last night and there's lots of ways you can watch / listen if you missed it last night.

The idea of FPL BlackBox is to reflect back on the mistakes we make during the season to try and become better managers.

In this episode, we talk about our pretty poor starts to the season. We also look ahead to the next Gameweek, where Mark has some great tables on who we should be targeting for our teams, who are the 'whipping boys' and some interesting stats on penalties across the different leagues and what this might mean for the Premiership. We also chat about other issues like price rises, wildcards... and more!

                  DIFFERENTIALS. What do you think?

                  1) Sheffiled Utd players

                  Leeds (H), Arsenal (A), Fulham (H)

Lundstram in penalties, but missed one. He seems in good shape, tho.

                  2) Leicester City

                  ManC (A), WHU (H), AVL (H)

Both teams have extremely good home games coming up. I think we can not overlook these, considering all the Wolves and ManC talks...

This season, I split my players into two categories, 'value players' and 'fixture players'. My 'value players' are your 'glue guys' it seems, who represent the best value players in the game, and hopefully stay all/most of the season, requiring few transfers.

My 'fixture players' are the expensive 8.0+ players that are relatively poor value over a season, but can be good value in the short-term, over the right fixtures. These are the aggressive players that get large hauls and have volatile returns. So my transfers focus on these players, moving them around to target hauls, making high-impact transfers.

The likes of Saiss, James, Lamptey & DCL are my kind of 'glue guys' personally. They each have a chance of being the best value player in their position, and they're nice and cheap, freeing more funds to aggressively hunt the monster hauls. Because we have so many expensive big hitters this season, I think you need cheaper glue.

But I don't see Jimenez as glue, mainly because of the alternatives (see VORP). He's a 'fixture player' for me. I have him for the good fixtures but I'll probably shift the funds into Pulisic eventually, by downgrading to someone like Antonio. I'm not sure an 8.5m player could ever be a glue guy for me this season. I don't think their relative value could ever compete with the 5.0m defenders or ~6.5m forwards. Jimenez may be tremendous value compared to other 8.0+ players, but he's not compared to all players, particularly defenders, and that's what matters. Value is relative, and I only want the best for the glue.

Probably not compared to the defenders.

It's possible, but I doubt it.

yes he can - he has an elite pp90

hopefully that number remains consistent as he plays more 90s and less 10s! but i see no reason why it shouldnt he is one of the most talented players playing for the strongest team in the country

Pp90 is a useless stat for players whose problem is that they never play 90

                          Agreed.

A player that plays 1 minute a game has 90 pp90, which is ridiculous. The appearance points heavily skew the data. Not to mention that coming on against tired legs is an advantage.

'Per game' for me, as FPL is played on a 'per game' basis.
