UCL Fantasy: Panel thoughts for GW1

The Chaaaaaampionssssss!

The pinnacle of European football returns next Tuesday as the Champions League gets underway, which also means the return of its increasingly popular fantasy counterpart! The basic rules of the game have been summarised by Skonto Rigga here and, in a series of Community Articles to come over the coming months, a panel of ‘experts’ (they wish!) will provide their opinions on the pressing issues and offer tips on how to succeed.

On the panel are Fantasy Football Scout’s own Geoff, and Community Members and seasoned UCL players Darth_Krid, Stats Don’t Lie, JK, AK, FFFrog and Pirlo’s Pen.

Who is the best option in each position?

Each panellist was asked to name the one player per position that they think is the most important for our Matchday 1 squads. Two goalkeepers were often provided, because of the game’s substitution rules.

Goalkeepers

Geoff – Mikhail Kerzhakov looks like a solid 4.5m pick, though I’m not yet set on a Goalkeeper pairing. I’ll be hoping to find a solid but very cheap pair, and in this position more than others will be hoping to find guidance from others.

Darth_Krid – Just like in FPL, there’s no need to spend a premium on a keeper, especially with the option to substitute players and get two bites of the budget cherry. That being said, Barcelona’s Neto (5m) looks a great steal in an easy group as regular Marc Andre Ter Stegen will miss the group stages after surgery. In the other fixture ‘block’ I like Olympiacos’ Jose Sa (4.5m) as he is the undisputed #1 and is not likely to lose his place unlike some of the other injury deputies at this price point.

Stats Don’t Lie – With the ability to make substitutions during a matchday, premium keepers face a real uphill battle to justify their price. A 4.5m rotation pair looks to be the best bet here to give you the most chance at a CS. Personally I’m looking to pair Kerzhakov with Sa of Olympiacos. Both have manageable groups and are nailed in their defensively sound teams, and don’t take up valuable slots in teams that present many other options.

JK – With regular keeper Pierluigi Gollini injured Atalanta’s Marco Sportiello has a chance to establish himself. With Midtjylland up first it’s a great chance for the 4.5 priced keeper. Pair him with Kerzakhov of Zenit to rotate across the two days.

AK – This is the area where I am looking to maximise value while paying bare minimum. Although it’s important in this game to have two starting Goalkeepers, playing on different Matchdays so you can switch them out if need be. Adrian (4.5) is in my team as Alisson nurses an injury for Liverpool. Zenit’s Mikhail Kerzhakov (4.5) rotates nicely with Adrian and Zenit seem to be reliable at the back, having conceded only 6 goals in 10 games so far in Russian Premier League.

FFFrog – As I mentioned in my article, I’m going to recommend two players in a 4.5m rotation. Liverpool’s Adrian looks set to start the first four games and he plays on the day after Zenit’s Mikhail Kerzakhov. Their rotation leaves your keepers playing against Midtjylland, Brugges and Lazio until GW4 and the substitution system means you have two good shots at that goalkeeper spot each week.

Pirlo’s Pen – I can’t see many of the premium GK’s offering any great value early on, so I have decided to go cheap here. For 9m, you can have Jose Sa & Kerzhakov, which will give you a GK on both days of fixtures.

Defenders

Geoff – Sergio Ramos (6.5m) is a clearly solid pick, but I’m hoping for big things from Alphonso Davies. It’s nice to have a bit of Canadian content, and he has some attacking threat with clean sheet potential. At 43% ownership, he’s a nice entry into the Bayern defence.

Darth_Krid – Love him or hate him, you just can’t ignore him. Sergio Ramos (6.5m) is a polarising figure but what isn’t in dispute is the fact that he plays for a Real Madrid side which conceded the fewest goals and kept the most clean sheets in Europe’s top five leagues last season. Oh, and add to the fact that he’s on penalties in the world of VAR where they’re handed out like sweets, it’s impossible to overlook him in what looks like a fairly navigable group for the Spanish champions.

Stats Don’t Lie – Mr Marmite himself, I simply can’t go without Sergio Ramos. Nailed on in a great defence, prolific scoring record, pens, 40% owned. As much as I hate him as a footballer, he’s nailed in my team.

JK – He was a great pick last year, he’s changed clubs but he’s still a great pick. Achraf Hakimi has a goal and two assists from his opening three league matches showing that the Moroccan remains a terrific force at both ends of the pitch.

AK – The first name on my teamsheet, Sergio Ramos (6.5). A Defender who plays for the best defence in the top five leagues and has penalties in his locker. If all that weren’t enough, he also has a massive goal threat from set pieces as we have seen over the years. Fantasy Gold.

FFFrog – At 5.5m, Atalanta’s left wing back Robin Gosens is nailed in my team. 9 goals and 8 assists last season in the league have been followed up with a goal and 2 more assists this term, and with games against Midtjylland and Ajax and Liverpool’s currently leaky defence, there’s going to be points at both ends for the flying German.

Pirlo’s Pen – The UCL defender of the season Joshua Kimmich is still classified as a defender in this game, and he can often play in midfield. With 2g & 3a last time out, I expect him to add to this.

Midfielders

Geoff – Ansu Fati is the second most owned midfielder (32%) for good reason, at only 8.0m. Doubling up with Philippe Coutinho (9.0m) looks like a solid strategy.

Darth_Krid – With most points in this version of the game coming from the forwards and the defence, the midfield is all about bargains. There aren’t too many to be found in the midfield this year, but I really like RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo at 6m. He scored three goals in last year’s competition and plays as an attacking midfielder for last season’s surprise semi-finalists. With debutants Istanbul Basaksehir first up, it’s a prime fixture for him and the team to pick up where they left off.

Stats Don’t Lie – With my darling of last season, Josip Ilicic, still likely unavailable, Ansu Fati is the man that has gone straight into my team. The next prodigy of the Blaugrana has got off to a great start under Ronald Koeman, netting 3 goals in his first 3 league games this season. Barcelona find themselves in one of the easiest groups in the UCL and I’m backing Fati to build on his promising start.

JK – At just 8m Barcelona’s Ansu Fati has so far outshone his more illustrious team mate this season and begins with a home tie against likely group whipping boys Ferencvaros.

AK – Barcelona’s Ansu Fati is the first name on my team sheet in the midfield. He’s started all 3 games in the league on the left wing and has scored 3 goals already. Priced at just 8m, Fati could make a mockery of his price as Barcelona have two very weak teams in their group.

FFFrog – Bayern’s Serge Gnabry is 10m and as Spurs saw last season he is capable of a hat-trick any week. He has 3 goals already this season in Bayern’s steamroller offense and he’ll be looking to build on his 9 UCL goals from last season early on.

Pirlo’s Pen – I have gone for Ansu Fati. With a kind price tag and a home game against minnows Ferencvaros, I can see him doing well here.

Forwards

Geoff – While Robert Lewandowski is probably the best forward pick, I will almost certainly pair him with Erling Braut Haaland. Formerly one of my favourite picks in Eliteserien Fantasy for Molde, he has a great scoring record and excellent Group Stage fixtures.

Darth_Krid – It might not be very original, but the first name in your forward line can only be Robert Lewandowski (12m). Robbed of a Ballon d’Or only by a nonsense decision to not award it, the Polish striker is fresh from scoring 15 goals in last season’s iteration and is the penalty-taking frontman for the reigning champions and arguably best team in the world. A no-brainer.

Stats Don’t Lie – This is probably the most difficult position to pick my players for due to the plethora of fantastic options, particularly in the premium bracket, but I can’t look past the value presented by Atalanta’s Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez. The 8.5m magician is a central hub for all things good in one of the most exciting attacks in Europe. Having recorded 4g and 2a in three league games thus far, and with 10+ assists in each of the last four seasons, this is a player I simply can’t see my team without.

JK – Starting at home to a Mönchengladbach side that has started slowly Romelu Lukaku is in fine form with 4 goals in his opening 3 Serie A matches as well as scoring against England and twice against Iceland.

AK – I can’t look past Robert Lewandowski (12m) even with a tricky fixture first up. He’s the main goal threat for the reigning champions and is also on penalties. The Polish striker scored an incredible 15 goals last season and came close to breaking Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of most goals in a season (17). It’s even more impressive when you consider the fact that knockout rounds were reduced to one-legged ties, meaning he played two fewer games than he would have in a normal season.

FFFrog – Picking a Bayern player in both midfield and attack isn’t very original, but when a team is this good it seems a no brainer. Lewandowski got 15 goals last season in 11 games, is on penalties and scored 4 against Hoffenheim in the last Bundesliga game fresh from winning European Player of the Year.

Pirlo’s Pen – Sometimes it’s wise to keep it simple, and for me the best asset in the game again has to be Robert Lewandowski. With 5g and 2a in 3 games in the Bundesliga, he’s going into the Atleti home game with serious form.

Jules Kounde tests positive for COVID-19 and will miss first round UCL against CHE. Too bad, he was a great enabler...

          This is a BIG problem.
Wolves could face a bad situation if they force the quarantine on CR7 news.
They need to make a statement regarding these cases

Hi guys, this is my team. Second season playing, last season I was 2 points away from a 3 digit ranking, ending just outside TOP 1k. Also playing Bundesliga for the first time and doing solid, around TOP 1.5 k at the moment.

    1.0 ITB
    Kerzhakov/Sa
    Pavard/Meunier/Felipe/Gosens/Danilo

    Sterling/Fati/Reyna/Olmo/Barrios

    Messi/ Haaland/Guirassy

What do you think about this? The plan is to play LWC GW2 and then hold the WC possibly until GW6 and all those rotations.

That's a very decent team. Not sure about Pavard though and I think you could upgrade him to Davies easily with the money in the bank.

Nice team! As AK said, I prefer Davies to Pavard for that extra 1m. As well as that, I don’t fancy Reyna to be first choice for Dortmund’s UCL squad with Brandt, Sancho and Reus available!

Thanks for the remark! The reason why I'm going for Pavard is that he has a safer position in the starting lineup. Kimmich will be played as a defensive midfielder now that Thiago has gone(and Pavard can be played on centre half) whereas Lucas Hernandez is showing glimpses of form(and Bayern have spent a bucket load of cash to get him from Atletico). Davies was played as a left wing in few games but both Gnabry and Coman are back I'm not sure about his position anymore.

Reyna is a young player and potentially a risky pick but he scored a goal and 3 assists in Bundesliga. Still, I'm keeping this 1.0 ITB to potentially upgrade him to Chiesa if he is played on a more attacking position(yesterday was right wingback), and maybe Barrios to Erokhin if he starts to get some more attacking upside.

Glad you're enjoying Bundesliga Fantasy! Its my second season and I'm currently top 300. Also congrats on a solid UCL finish last year. Team looks nice. Is the 1m itb for lewandowski?

Regarding your chip use of recommend doing it the other way around. Between MD2-5 all teams either play 3/4 at home or 3/4 away so can target those with home advantage (if that's even a thing, I personally believe so particularly weather-wise in some countries and jet lag and stuff)

I'd also be weary of the possible rotation of players like Reyna who played 90 mins at the weekend.

The most exciting thing about UCL Fantasy is the different strategies that managers can adopt to play the game. The pool of players is huge and most of them are quality options.

Which strategy are you going for? Are you going for a heavy frontline of 3 expensive forwards? Or keeping 2 expensive forwards and one cheap forward and hope he does a "Haaland"? Are you also going for a cheaper defence, or looking to spend your cash at the back?

Big up top and big at the back!

      Most expensive mid is Fati.

Yeah. That Barcelona double looks very tasty, especially against probably the weakest team in the tournament at home. Both had a nice rest on the weekend too.

I wish I could go big everywhere hahaha. The more I look at it theore I struggle to build a cheap midfield while noticing that there are a number of cheap options I like particularly in defence.

I think there’s a real lack of budget options in both attack and midfield - no forwards worth owning under 6.5m and only a few midfielders. The UCL always sees the key forwards getting massive hauls, so I think I’ll start with Lewa, Mbappe and Haaland, who all bring top form and great quality into this week.

      Probably a balance of everything.

2 fodders - 1 in attack and 1 in midfield will be required ig to get a stable team.

      Right now my team stands:

      4.5 - 4.5
      Davies - Hakimi - Gosens - Felipe - 4m
      Fati - DiMaria - Sterling - Olmo - Barrios
      Halland - Lewa - 4.5

like the heading says, most important aspect is spreading the funds, need to have a big hitter in all departments.
Also, i don't look at big hitters based on position, rather big hitters from certain teams, mainly aiming at Bayern, Barca, PSG, Atalanta, both madrid clubs,

      Hateboer (Atalanta)

      Müller (Bayern)
      Fati (Barcelona)
      Erokhin (Zenit)
      Diatta (Brugge)

Nice to see some activity on here! Was here yesterday when selecting my team but it was pretty much empty.

Haven't played UCL Fantasy for so many years (Guaita and Mata for Valencia were some particularly shrewd signings, so must have been close to 10 years ago), very much out of the loop so would appreciate any advice, particularly on formations/strategies.

    Kerzhakov / Adrian
    Kimmich / Gosens / Angelino / Florenzi / Bastoni
Di Maria / Fati / Forsberg / Reyna / Barrios
    Messi (c) / Haaland / Guirassy

My thoughts on this team -

GK - Happy with Kerzhakov's fixtures 1,3,4,6 so as much as I don't rate the Liverpool defence, Adrian's fixture against Midtylland in MD2 swings the decision for me over Sa.

DF - I feel like there is huge value in the 4.5-5.5m range in defence which is why I've only gone for 1 premium, which at the moment is Kimmich because Ramos is injured and browsing around the Spanish media people seem to think he'll be rested for El Clasico at the weekend. Went with Gosens over Hateboer because I'm not sure why the latter didn't play in Atalanta's last match. Angelino is imo the best route into Leipzig's defence for their matchup with Istanbul, offers more in attack and also Klostermann was benched for an earlier league fixture which I'm not sure why that was. Florenzi no brainer imo, a 5m attacking wingback for PSG in an easy group starting off against a United team in rubbish form. Finally Bastoni seems like a nailed pick for a strong team although Inter have a tough group - would really have liked Kounde but Covid's gotta Covid.

MF - Again I want in on the PSG attack and Di Maria is cheaper than Neymar and Mbappe and doesn't take up a forward slot. Fati and Barrios pick themselves. Forsberg and Reyna have good Bundesliga form and consensus seems to be that they are first choice. Unsure on Reyna though because of his age and experience.

FW - No Lewa - don't expect Bayern to score more than 1 or 2 against Atletico. Messi will be the most captained player today so no brainer shield pick. Can do Messi to Lewa next week. Haaland vs Mbappe is one I'm still debating over. Guirassy easy pick as well at that price.

Problems - 11 Tuesday players and 4 Wednesday is not a good mix - especially with 3 defenders on Wed meaning I can't play a 2-5-3 tonight. So one of the Tuesday guys needs to go for a Wednesday player. I'm considering Rodrygo as a cheap route into the Real Madrid attack at 7.5 over Di Maria right now. Could also do Gomez in place of Guirassy where again Di Maria would be the cash cow.

Suggestions would be much appreciated! Also, anyone involved in FanTeam UCL this year? Would appreciate some discussion on that. Thanks!

like the team and your thought process very much, i completly forgot about Florenzi, might go for him over Bakker if I squeze 0.5mil somewhere

I just made a team for Fanteam, first time playing, just made the account and put a team up in 10mins without too much considerations thinking I could switch them up after creating but that is not the case. Anyway here it is:
      Neto
      Hakimi (c) - Hateboer - Bakker
Di Maria - Ilicic - Forsberg - Olmo
      Lewa - Neymar - Lukaku
Bench: Gulacsi - Promes - Rakitskiy - Mechele

Erokhin not in starting 11, well that makes it easy, Erokhin->Barrios and Bakker->Florenzi done!

Last minute moves Di Maria and Forsberg out for Gnabry and Olmo. Without using transfers, I'd expect Gnabry to outscore Di Maria but mostly this was just to get an extra Wednesday player in.

Failed to complete my FanTeam squad, which sucks, some proper bargains in there. Lukaku and Zapata at 8+7 compared to 11+9.5 in the official game is daylight robbery. I had Neto and Dean Henderson as my keepers as I expect Henderson to be the United keeper for the Istanbul games, whereas Gulacsi has his best fixture today (tomorrow?) when you'll be playing Neto instead. Otherwise had quite a similar team to yours, Ilicic at 5.5 could be gold if he returns to any sort of form. Shame most of the defenders were overpriced though.

As of yesterday he has trained but clearly not at 100% so unsure whether he will be risked with Clasico at the weekend. Would be interested if anyone's got more recent news from today. I've seen one article saying he should play as Real seek the win but most seem to believe he'll sit it out with an eye on the weekend

my first ever go at this game, i don't know what i'm doing or how this game works exactly, but i'll give it a go and just target good teams, and seemingly good fixtures for players i don't know for now, this is what i came up with

    Gulacsi
    Kimmich, Cancelo, Aguerd, Karavaev
    Sterling, Gnabry, Olmo
    Messi(c), Guirassy, Koita

    Sportiello, Jorginho, Witsel, Trippier

Your best picks are Kimmich, Gnabry, Olmo, Sterling and Messi.

      I'd go from there

not a fan of a couple of players like Trippier and Witsel but rest looking good, a bit too weak up front for my taste but if you like it go for it, but in any case switch up your bench so that you play Witsel and Jorginho and move Kimmich and Gnabry on bench and sub them in tomorrow for your lowest scoring players from today.

Finally settled on my team after deliberating a 2nd mid spot between Vinicius/Reyna I have doubts either of them will start gw1 so I opted for Pasalic in that spot, might downgrade Gosens to Hateboer and upgrade Aguerd to Dest, anyway here is the team:

    Kerzhakov - Jose Sa
Gosens (vc) - Meunier - Hummels - Bakker - Aguerd
    Fati (c)- Pasalic - Forsberg - Olmo - Erokhin
Lewa - Mbappe - Aguero (potential vc)

There's no real VCs in UCL. You choose a Captain for Day 1, and if he doesn't come good, you can switch it to someone else on Day 2

I had Bakker, but replaced him. I guess Kurzawa might start in UCL. He is suspended in domestic competitions, but there might be a chance for rotation.

I'm going really top heavy up front

2 ITB to bring in Gnabry next week

    Kherzakov/Adrian

    Hummels/Angelino/Araujo/Hakimi/Hateboer

    Fati/Olmo/Barrios/Erokhin/Gueye

    Messi(C1)/Haaland/Lewan(C2)

Very nice, I like keeping the cheapies in mid and heavy up top with strong back line as well, might consider going double up of Erokhin+Barrios as well, do more I think about it the more it sound like a way to go

    UCL Fantasy Draft

    Adrian | Kerzhakov
    Davies | Chilwell | Hatoboer | Felipe | Onguene
    Salah | Fati | Thauvin | Szoboszalai | Barrios
Haaland | Papu Gomez | Guirassy

Tried to spread the funds as much as possible.

    Have 0.5m itb. Any suggestions?

    Salah/Fati/Jorginho/Olmo/Barrios
    Messi/Guirassy/Gomez

Any absolute howler picks in that lot? Messi/Salah to rotate as captains looks like the best pair to go for and then i've picked whoever else looks good.

Bit late for thoughts but given you posted this after the deadline, were you not aware that Erokhin is on the bench? Personally think the forward line has come at too big a cost since the Brugge players will likely do quite badly, likewise Erokhin, and you've got a 4.0 defender. Nevertheless Mbappe (c) and no Messi at all is brave and could be gold if Messi blanks as you've got a great differential there. Likewise Muller over Gnabry. Personally think Felipe could be a rotation risk, he's not been 100% nailed for Atletico I don't think, which is OK usually but you don't exactly have any squad depth.

Actually I forgot there were 2 early matches!

        Thank you for your reply.

I wanted to go all in with those 3 forwards. I thought about Messi vs. Ferencvaros, but Barcelona seems to be in a turmoil. I went with Mbappé because he's been in a scoring rampage and United defense is quite awful imo.

Müller instead of Gnabry. I believe there might be some rotation in the wings. Müller is in great form too.

De Katelaere is a midfielder in the game, but actually he plays as a winger or centre forward. For 4.5 I took a chance on him.

Erokhin and Diatta were low cost options with some possible attacking return.

About Felipe, you're right. Hope it works out!

So, how we doing folks? So nice to see an 80+ score over here, haven't seen one of those in FPL for yonks. Messi(c), Fati, Angelino the big scorers with Haaland and Guirassy chipping in.

Not a single 2pt score or lower outfield - lowest scorers were Reyna (3), Florenzi (3) and Olmo (4). My subs are Gnabry, Gosens and Bastoni. What would be the play? Sub all 3, or leave Olmo in and take the 4 points?

Ah that sucks! Oh well. Here's hoping Kimmich pulls through at least... Quick question, do you know if auto subs still take place after manual subs? E.g. If I play Olmo 4 pts on Tuesday, then sub him out for Gnabry who doesn't make it on Wednesday, would autosub kick in to bring Olmo back?

          i don't think so mate

          as per the rules

" Once you confirm your subs or change of captain, those changes can’t be reversed.
Once the matches on the final day of the matchday have kicked off, you can’t make changes to your team.
Once you’ve made manual substitutions or changed your captain within a matchday, if any of your starting XI don’t play in real life, they won’t be automatically subbed out"

I bet Messi won't play because of El Clasico and also captain Mbappe but that failed 🙁 luckily still got Fati and Coutinho

anyway, still got Hakimi, Gosens, and Pavard to play
do you think which one is better captain, Hakimi or Gosens ? i'm leaning toward Hakimi at home against MGB, hoping for a better result than Mbappe 😀
