634x258 Season Review

When Man City captured a 22-year-old Vincent Kompany from Hamburg for a fee of £6 million in 2008, they knew they had themselves a bargain. Ironically, Kompany went into the 2011/12 season costing a similar amount, with Fantasy managers quick to target his 6.0 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag as a source of value. Having been classified as a midfielder in the 2010/11 campaign, Kompany was now listed in defence and, while the likes of Shay Given and Luis Suarez failed to live up to their pre-season hype as Fantasy bargains, the City man certainly delivered.

Kompany finished the campaign behind only Patrice Evra in the defender rankings, despite being limited to 31 league starts, compared to the United man’s 37. The Belgian’s inspirational performances skippering City were akin to Steven Gerrard’s showings for Liverpool at his peak: Kompany dragged City to the title, adding determined steel to a back four that notched four clean sheets in the final six matches. His goal in the 1-0 victory over United that gave City the advantage over the final two matches proved to be decisive, epitomising Kompany’s importance to City’s cause.

The Statistics

With 15 clean sheets gathered, three goals and two assists, Kompany trailed Evra by just 14 points atop the FPL defender rankings. For a player who recorded 31 starts, Kompany averaged 4.7 points per game in the FPL – a total only bettered by defenders gaining a handful of appearances.

A hugely popular pick from the very start of the season, by Gameweek 10 Kompany’s price had risen to 6.3, reaching 6.6 by Gameweek 24 as the investment continued. Several mid-season absences with a three-match ban, along with knee and calf injuries, derailed his popularity temporarily but, by the campaign’s climax, Kompany’s price had risen to 7.0. Significantly, City kept just two clean sheets over the seven games without their skipper in the defence.

The Prospects

Kompany will pose a problem for Fantasy managers next term. There’s no question that he’ll suffer a price rise which will likely see him share a bracket with heavyweight defensive assets Thomas Vermaelen, Nemanja Vidic and Leighton Baines of around 7.5. Even so, as an obvious source of 15+ clean sheets over the season, the City backline is set to be coveted.

Kompany’s inflated price tag will have Fantasy managers eyeing up the likes of Gael Clichy and perhaps Micah Richards once more: assets that are set to be remain prone to rotation. Joe Hart will also emerge as a stronger option as a result of Kompany’s price rise. Hart will offer almost 100% security in the City rearguard, whilst his price is likely to be lower than Kompany’s, remaining at the 7.0 mark once again.

For the City skipper to stand out as the key source of points in their defence, he’ll need to better his 31 starts and three goals earned this term. That should be achievable, although the lure from Vermaelen and Baines as genuine sources of attacking points may still see him relegated in the ranks of popularity.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Miyaichi, you could splice £6m Zhirkov (Rus) into that space. I would also suggest ditching Lindy-hop, Sorensen is highly likely to play over him so consider a switch to Given (Eire) or Isaksson (Swe) perhaps as a partner for Akinfeev.

But it does depend on what you plan to do with WC.

So, Euro2012... what WC tactics are people thinking of using? I'm very tempted to build my initial squad purely around GW1, WC for GW2/GW3. You then get another WC for the knock-outs, then 8 and 4 respectively. I think I can work with what's on offer in the latter rounds so after GW1 makes sense to me.

It'll also allow me to go heavy on Defs Fra, Ital, Spa for the alleged 'easier' second and third group fixs. Any different ideas bobbing on the waves?

That's the way to go, might seem a common idea but it is needed not only because of the fixtures but with a tight tournament for the euros I think we are going to need a game to find out where teams stand. I feel an upset or two are on the cards.

      Never waste a WC, imo.

I'd rather use it in the last 2 weeks of the group stages, where the top teams won't have much to play for and could play their 2nd string teams.

        You mean the last week?
Thing is with a 3 game group you are much less likely to be 100% safe and able to play a second string team in the last game than in a 6 game group like the CL.

Exactly my plan. WC after GW1 then sit tight with the big teams maybe 2 sneaky transfers if anyone gets injured, or for differential/ good fixtures. Then after group stages it should be a breeze, will have a good indication to the favourite to load up on players from that team.

Cheers GO, although I'll be taking more note of team line-ups than results. It's difficult to judge in these pre-tournament games if certain players are putting it in to stake a starting spot, or taking it easier to avoid injuries, so results matter less to me.

To answer your question though; I think it it's rather inventive. Except it to provide a different kind of feedback than when playing a team basically ready for their summer vacation.

Think it happened before the WC2010 as well, just can't recall who.

He plays a winger while Shirokov as CM.
Dzagoev is more attacking & creates more chances of getting Assists & Goals, although he has a toe injury at present.
That said, I currently have Shirokov in my team.

+1 also debating whether to select them at all, Poland is quite a weak side really I would lean towards Kuba as he is on pens because if they win games a squeaky goal could come from anywhere.

Worth a shot, if you get off to a differential flyer, would put you in a strong position.

Out of these, can we see who may be likely to do well?

very tough..technically defenders who will be under Pressure and will face a lot of attack will get more of them..
                CBs for struggling teams
                CDMs for good teams

There isn't that many points in recovered balls. They'll get one or two more points most probably.

Assists will be very hard to get anyway with the Rules
