Pogba making case for FPL inclusion as United face more appealing fixtures

FULHAM 1-2 MAN UNITED

  • Goals: Ademola Lookman (£5.0m) | Edinson Cavani (£7.8m), Paul Pogba (£7.7m)
  • Assists: André-Franck Zambo Anguissa (£4.5m) | Bruno Fernandes (£11.3m)
  • Bonus points: Pogba x3, Zambo Anguissa x2, Cavani x1

POG IN THE WHEEL

Paul Pogba‘s (£7.7m) latest Fantasy Premier League return has installed him on many a radar ahead of Gameweek 20.

The Frenchman netted the winner in Manchester United’s 2-1 victory at Fulham on Wednesday night and has involved himself in three goals since Gameweek 17.

No member of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad has matched Pogba’s attacking returns over the last four matches, in which he has produced an average of seven points.

By comparison, the more expensive Bruno Fernandes (£11.3m) has a goal, assist and five points per game during that period and Marcus Rashford (£9.6m) has a solitary assist to his name.

“I would like to say so (Pogba is at his fittest and most focused). He is happy, physically in good shape and we know all about his talent. Today we played him in midfield and it was worth it.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Whether Pogba can sustain this form beyond Double Gameweek 19 is certainly worth monitoring.

It must be noted, pinning down his favoured position in Manchester United’s formation remains a challenging prospect.

After starting on the left-hand side of attacking midfield against Aston Villa and Burnley, he has returned to the holding roles for the last two matches.

And some cynics might point out that his stunning out-of-the-box goal at Craven Cottage came from his only shot of the game.

DEFENSIVE POTENTIAL?

According to the Fantasy Football Scout Season Ticker, no team has better fixtures for defensive potential over the next six Gameweeks than Manchester United.

They face Sheffield United (home), Arsenal (away), Southampton (home), Everton (home), West Bromwich Albion (away) and Newcastle (home) between now and Gameweek 25 – encouraging indeed.

Their preparation for that run of matches has been relatively positive. Since Gameweek 16, only Arsenal (four) have more clean sheets than Manchester United (three).

However, their start at Fulham might have worried owners of Harry Maguire (£5.4m), Luke Shaw (£4.8m) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.4m).

With the Red Devils producing some sloppy passing and poor defending early-on, the Cottagers exposed their high line in the fifth minute when Ademola Lookman (£5.0m) ploughed through the middle to open the scoring.

And some might argue that United’s defence is not as strong without Victor Lindelöf (£4.8m) next to Maguire, the centre-back missing out at Craven Cottage.

“(Lindelof) is not bad, it’s still his back we’ve got a few issues with, I felt it was better he stayed home, trained a bit and can be ready for the weekend,” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

TAKE A LOOK

A third Premier League goal of the season for Lookman is sure to increase attention on the player for differential potential.

His Wednesday-night opener was his second attacking return of the last three matches and it is possible he could find himself deployed out-of-position from now on.

With Aleksandar Mitrović (£5.5m) still fit enough only for cameo appearances from the bench and Bobby De Cordova-Reid (£5.3m) missing out through suspension, Scott Parker used Lookman as the centre-forward in a 3-4-2-1 formation.

“(Deploying Lookman through the middle) worked to a tee in the first goal. His finishing was deadly. I thought that worked well. He’s vital, everyone has seen he is quality and he proved that tonight. For sure (Lookman will relish the pressure). He needs to relish. A young player who is thriving and getting a run he’s not had over the last couple of years. Huge player and he’s going to be a difference-maker for us.” – Scott Parker

His positioning is, of course, something to monitor in the next few matches although some Fantasy managers could benefit from jumping early.

When sorting the Season Ticker by attacking potential over the next six Gameweeks, Fulham rank second best with Brighton (away) and West Bromwich (away) their next two opponents.

Fulham XI (3-4-2-1): Areola; Adarabioyo, Andersen, Aina (Mitrović 83′); Bryan, Reed, Zambo Anguissa (Lemina 79′), Tete; Cavaleiro (Kamara 71′), Loftus-Cheek; Lookman.

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): de Gea; Shaw, Maguire, Bailly, Wan-Bissaka; Fred, Pogba; Martial (McTominay 85′), B Fernandes (Matić 90+5′), Greenwood (Rashford 85′); Cavani.

Might be accused of chasing last week's points etc. but I'm close to pulling the trigger on

Salah + Soucek to Maddison + Pogba and use the surplus funds to bring in Kane next week.

    Thoughts?

Does anybody else HATE price changes in this game? Would you prefer it if they only happened once per GW, as soon as the transfer window for next one opens (capped at 0.2)?

Only the price drops 🙂 ... the problem this season are the long, drawn out game weeks

      1. 420king
        • 9 Years
        3 years, 2 months ago

I feel like the problem lies more within a huge amount of casual players that are making early moves for absolutely no reason. You can either wait and get priced out of your desired move, or do the transfer early and get screwed by injury. There's absolutely no skill whatsoever involved in this either.

        1. HashAttack
          • 7 Years

Don't think casuals are the ones driving it - most of them don't do transfers
What about new teams set up each week - there must be a lot of them created each week and presumably those purchases count towards price rises

Most casuals don't do transfers? Most do!
You can play the game while wasting a bunch of free transfers, but they don't do transfers, they're not casuals, they're not playing.

Yeah, I figured it was mostly casuals because they'd be inclined to do the transfers early but he's right, there's more than just that.

I used to think that way as is the way in another game I play but then thought wouldn't it be boring if all fantasy games were pretty much alike.

I don't think the game would be more boring to you if they changed that, if anything you should be more inclined to play because the rules would make so much more sense...

I don't mind the volatility of the market tbh. I do admit though that there does seem to be more blatant manual intervention over the last few seasons though which is very frustrating.

          1. 420king
            • 9 Years
            3 years, 2 months ago

I do get the fun of volatile market. But in this case it's not, because people are either abusing the system or making hasty early decisions which do not help anyone.

    3. Deulofail
      • 8 Years
      3 years, 2 months ago

I think the buying price should rise and fall but the selling price should never change. That would also allow them to more transparently manually manipulate the prices. E.g. to raise Smith Rowe up in more dramatic steps.

      1. 420king
        • 9 Years
        3 years, 2 months ago

I think it's an interesting idea and would solve one problem that a lot of people have, but I still prefer mine as I feel it solves two without changing the system much.

        1. Deulofail
          • 8 Years
          3 years, 2 months ago

You doing it once a week would definitely be part of my system too. You couldn't be manually manipulating prices by +/- 0.5, for example, without telling everyone about it and when it's going to be.

          1. 420king
            • 9 Years
            3 years, 2 months ago

Right, having it once per week would solve all the 'abuse' problems. Would also stop people from getting extra value from WC which some might not like, but overall it'd be more fair to everyone.

            1. Deulofail
              • 8 Years
              3 years, 2 months ago

Yeah I like it, mainly for a different reason though: that it levels the playing field for people across the world, and opens the door to transparency. No need to keep the pricing system opaque in that case. Or less reason to.

Though I don't think your solution, alone, solves the averarching problem that people feel forced into making moves for the financial side of the game, which is not what they wanted to play FPL for. It's too complex a system attached to what should be more of a 'pick you favourite players' kind of experience. FPL is generally very simple in every other way, but for some reason, you have to factor in a long-term business strategy, which most don't have the time to compute, and doesn't really feel rewarding at the end since it might not pay off, because FPL is so unpredicatble anyway.

Your specific issue that people feel pressured into moves early in the gameweek is part of the problem that people are pressured into moves in general. I think solving the the 'early in the gameweek' part doesn't do much to solve the problem, because people will still be pressured into early transfers (e.g. buying 1 GW earlier than you wanted because the price will go up next GW). You can still argue the same thing: that price changes are part of the game and up to you how you play. If it's really beneficial to wait most of the time, then you should do that and gain your advantage. Much the same as a week-to-week price change.

I would rather see the price game removed from the fantasy football game entirely. (Except for adjusting buying prices periodically and transparently as mentioned above to keep the game balanced and challenging throughout the season).

Right, levelling the playing field for all people across the world was also a part of why I'd prefer it to be this way, but you make some good points that I agree with. What I was suggesting would indeed not be the perfect solution, but considering how reluctant they are to make changes it would perhaps be the one they would be willing to do right now and (for me) it would certainly be an improvement. I also don't see being pressured into an early deal because of a price rise as a bad thing, as long as you know it is happening.

What they should do is take the Price Change Predictor and make it legit, open up that side of things and let players see what is REALLY going to happen with rises and falls and not have us make semi-educated guesses on it.

I was lucky to get some big hitters early but now find myself hesitant to tinker as I would lose .4 on Grealish, Son, Bruno or Kane if I wanted to buy them back. That's already been affecting my thinking.

Part of the game and loved it from the first day. Creates distinct styles of play towards it and to some extent stops everyone having identical teams. As much as it can reward the brave (or stupid) it can have the very opposite effect too.

Can be frustrating but is a fun extra angle to the game. All the prior analysis I've seen points to veterans (those with consistently good ranks) doing transfers late though. Current world number 1 seems to be doing his just before the deadline each week. Sensible with COVID I think.

at 7.3% Maddison is one I would say?

the only issue is no City attack

Very true. Expected his ownership to be higher tbh. I would only trust KDB in attack but keeping a close eye on Gundo.

138 points- happy with this GW.. but now what do do with this lot? Is KDB out for a few weeks?

Tempted to do KDB/Davis --> Kane + Anguissa (and play 3-4-3)

    Team:
    Martinez
    Coufal / Dias / Stones
    Salah / Fernandes / Son / Soucek / KDB*
    Bamford / Antonio

    Bench: Button, Robertson, Michell, Davis*.

    Thoughts?.

Pogba is a player who when on form seems unstoppable. He has a knack of smelling when something is on a picks up his games. I think right now he sees a chance of some kind of silverware and suddenly his form is great. They way he took his goal against Fulham made him look like the top player he can. Just wish he would do it all the time. Thing is though, he is really tempting me right now!

Wildcarded in frustration. Dropped from 20k to 300k in the last 10 weeks.
Leno Holding Dier Son Kane DCL De Bruyne Mahrez Zaha Gros all gone

    Martinez (Foster)
    Shaw Stones Cancelo Targett Mitchell
    Fernandes Salah Grealish Maddison Gundogan
    Bamford Vardy Antonio in.

Hopefully no DGW's until at least GW24 where i might have to resign Kane if spurs have a great double annoyingly.

Dallas isn't a bad shout but given its an away game you are really only looking for attacking returns.
