Team Reveals

How I managed to fit De Bruyne, Salah and Fernandes into my FPL draft

Fantasy Premier League opened its doors for the 2021/22 campaign, so in this, my first column of the new season, I thought I would jot down some initial thoughts on players that have caught my eye, and build a rough first draft based around that.

There is still just over six weeks to go before the season gets underway, and lots will change during that time, so I’m treating this as a kind pre-season Watchlist, which I can then develop in the coming weeks.

Also, it’s worth noting that I’ve purposefully avoided players from teams currently without a manager, as it’s hard to speculate on their potential without knowing who will be in charge. There is a huge difference, for example, between Nuno Espírito Santo and Christophe Galtier at Everton, so at least for now, I’m looking elsewhere.

THE GOALKEEPERS

I see real potential at Brighton and Hove Albion next season, and Robert Sánchez (£4.5m) stands out amongst the budget goalkeeper options.

Since the turn of the year, Albion kept nine clean sheets and conceded just 21 goals, and while it has been well documented just how much they underperformed against the quality of their performances last season, the numbers suggest they’ll finish far higher this time.

It’s also worth noting that the Seagulls play only two of last season’s top nine teams in the first eight Gameweeks.

Sánchez can be paired with Albion’s backup keeper, Jason Steele (£4.0m), providing Mathew Ryan (£4.5m) leaves the club, as expected, this summer.

THE DEFENDERS

Comparing Alexander-Arnold and Robertson's FPL points potential for 2021/22

Going into the season without a fully rested Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) would be a bold move, but the £4.5m defensive options look so good, selecting five of them feels like a viable enough strategy at this stage.

As a result, I can then push funds further forward.

There are some real bargains in the budget category, including Wesley Fofana (£4.5m). The 20-year-old feels under-priced compared to his team-mates at the back (see below), and takes on Wolverhampton Wanderers, Norwich City, Brighton, Burnley and Crystal Palace in the opening seven Gameweeks.

Tariq Lamptey (£4.5m) showed plenty of promise going forward last season, and while Lewis Dunk (£5.0m) remains Brighton’s main goal threat in defence, the young wing-back could be the value pick.

Pairing him up with Leeds United’s Luke Ayling (£4.5m) gives you a nice rotation pairing too, if you’re into that kind of thing:

bur | WAT | bur | bre | new | cry | WAT | nor | WOL | nor | NEW

Issa Diop (£4.5m) and Conor Coady (£4.5m) take up the final spots at the back, but if I can push a bit more of my budget into defence, Kieran Tierney (£5.0m), Vladimír Coufal (£5.0m) and Matt Ritchie (£5.0m) all look like excellent options.

The latter has been reclassified as a defender, and finished last season strongly. Between Gameweeks 30 and 38, he provided five assists in nine starts, and would have ranked second amongst defenders for successful crosses and big chances created during that period, only trailing Liverpool’s Alexander-Arnold.

THE MIDFIELDERS

The current world number one answers your questions

In this setup, I can own three premium midfielders who all offer solid captaincy options in the opening weeks.

I’ve seen a few suggest Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) is over-priced, which is probably true based on last season’s output. However, his -3.26 expected goal (xG) delta, compared to +3.60 the one prior, highlights just how much variance there can be in a season, and it’s highly likely he’ll hit 200+ points providing he can stay fit.

The remaining spots go to Diogo Jota (£7.5m) and Raphinha (£6.5m), both of whom can offer real value.

THE FORWARDS

Ollie Watkins’ (£7.5m) 14 league goals and nine assists last term represented a good return, but he was perhaps unfortunate not to have done even better, given that he hit the woodwork a massive seven times.

His appeal is further boosted by the arrival of Emiliano Buendía (£6.5m), who alongside Jack Grealish (£8.0m), will add more creativity to Villa’s midfield.

Last season’s touch heatmaps suggest they should dovetail nicely, too:

Jack Grealish (top) and Emiliano Buendía’s (bottom) 2020/21 touch heatmaps, via Sofa Score.

Of the three promoted sides, the only team I’m interested in right now is Brentford, especially in attack. They have finished as the Championship’s top scorers in two successive campaigns, and while elements of their play will need to be adapted to top-flight football, I think, in time, they’ll become an efficient Premier League outfit.

Their opening run is fairly tough, but it’s that Gameweek 2 fixture against Crystal Palace I think we can target, and then move on if necessary.

Ivan Toney (£6.5m) is undeniably their chief goal threat, and hit 33 goals en route to promotion via the play-offs last season. 23 of those arrived from open-play, and the fact he contributed 10 assists too is encouraging.

I may even double-up with Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m) in midfield, who I fancy as a real differential. He returned eight goals and 10 assists last season, and though I expect him to start the campaign as a winger, he has at times featured as a forward when manager Thomas Frank has opted for a two-striker system.

Completing the squad is Michael Obafemi (£4.5m), but in fairness it could be any of the 4.5’s, as they’ll be firmly rooted to the third spot on my bench.

So, I know this first draft won’t be for everyone, but I hope having read this you can at least understand why I’ve selected the players I have, and if nothing else, it’ll be an interesting reference point to look back on in August.

I’ll update you on how it’s looking next time I check in, but for now, thanks for reading and best of luck if you are playing any of the Euro 2020 fantasy games.

Interesting approach Tom, but I'm not convinced. Whenever KDB has a captainable fixture, Salah has a good one too. So I'm not convinced KDB is needed as a captain option. The slight benefit doesn't outweigh the large cost of skimping on defence imo.

In addition one could try an 'upside chasing' scenario, switching Bruno and Kev rather than having both.

Yeah, just experimenting at this stage mate, but those points you raise are totally valid.

The draft was built last week, within a day or two of the game opening, so it was a kind of reaction to the 4.5 defenders, which I really like this year.

If you go for Coufal, Fofana and Lamptey, you might as well add Ayling to get a double-4.5 defender rotation and ensure 3 easy picks at the back.

That's a good team but not sure if it's worth sacrificing TAA & Shaw to fit in KDB in place of 8-9m FWD/MID.

Could work out though if there are enough nailed 4.5m defs from teams inform and KDB is firing too.

I think it depends how you see Liverpool starting, at least defensively. How Konate fits in, where van Dijk is at with his fitness etc.

The 4.5 defender category will get a boost if White moves to Arsenal, too, which is something to keep an eye on.

      What's the reasoning behind it?
The general consensus here is using it as late as possible so you have the funds spread only for the last 5-6 weeks ( where a good bench is anyway required because of roatations)

      1. Holmes
        • 10 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

Too much planning required if doing it late. And if even one piece of it goes wrong due to injuries or suspension, it turns into waste.

Instead of using a strict plan of WC for BB, I would be using WC to solve BB issue (if it doesnt work). Low TV in 2nd half means I will probably never be able to afford a decent bench.

Basically it gives me freedom to play my own game and use FH/TC effectively.

        Dias, Shaw, Digne, Coufal
        Salah, Bruno, Buendia, Saka

I am going also doing BB in GW1.

However my plan is to pick a well-rested squad full of players with an optimal preseason. I will WC after GW3 and lock my funds in European World Cup Players.

Unless your European World Cup Players have an optimal preseason (which I strongly doubt), then I will avoid players like Dias, Shaw, Digne, Coufal, Bruno, Saka & Watkins.
Does not fear too much about the GK's.

The premium assets not involved in Euro's who have already been on vacation for a month or more ready to take part in preaseason friendlies and whom therefore will start the first few GW's looks very tasty Imo.

Salah, Mané, Son, Mahrez, Pulisic, Ziyech and so on. You get my point. Seems much more safe to go that route for the first 3 GW's and then WC in the international break.

BB in a DGW the week after a WC. Lots made poor decisions with their BBs last season (Leeds when they had a marginal SGW within a DGW) and instead of admitting it was a bad decision, are instead blaming the chip so are jumping on a low percentage strategy to "get it out of the way" (which makes little sense) and to "gather early momentum" (which makes even less sense)

Yeah, I agree with this. Loads used the BB chip last season with two or three Leeds players in a SGW. Think it was against Brighton, and then Villa later in the season. Didn't seem like the best use of it at the time, and it didn't work.

      2. Holmes
        • 10 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

Early momentum is not something I'm looking for. "Get it out of the way", yes, you can say that but thats due to some other reasons rather than a bad decision last year 😀

Ever since BB was introduced, it has always been a headache to plan for it and watch it produce mere 16-20pts, sometime even resulting less than that. This plus having impacts in GWs around it. For instance, as you said, BB in a DGW after a WC. This would force us to stick with a bad team for longer period than required and taking unnecessary hits when you can solve a problem with a quick WC. This kind of restriction is something I dont like to have. I would like to make best use of WC/FH/TC since they have more impact with less planning.

2nd reason being my low TV which doesnt allow good players on bench. Bench of players from bottom half teams is unlikely to get many points, over one week or over multiple weeks.

Its a chip I'm not good at using and it doesnt fit my style. Hence, getting out of my way is probably the best thing.

        1. Sanchit

Does the current strategy involve fixing the bench with a WC in GW2?
Why use it in GW1 specifically though?
Why not GW2/3/4/5 based on fixtures.
Atleast you'll have a first look at the new managers/players and know the starting 11s

Someone here said this and I quote,"GW1 is the only week in which we can play WC and BB together"

Playing in 2,3,4,5 is an option but that would be risky if some injury or suspension happens, same as using BB in DGW. I'm still considering GW2 due to fixtures, lets see...

We can build a decent squad with nailed players. Like go for triple Liverpool, double Man Utd/West Ham/Villa etc. They may not perform as you expect them to do so in GW1 but atleast you can hold them for more than 1 GW.

For me GW1 is too much of a lottery to play a chip. You don't know which new players will start and which need gentler integration. Some teams seem more prepared from the off and others take a GW or 2 to get going.

That’s where it gets a bit circular for me

When “I don’t want to have to plan for BB later in the season” is a justification… yet many GW1 bench boosters are already changing their GW1 lineup to accomodate the GW1 BB… and also accepting the use of a WC GW2 if it hasn’t went to plan…

Why not start with your planned “normal” squad for example, digest all the new information we’re going to get in the first few gameweeks… and just keep BB on ice until a nice/reasonable set of fixtures arises?

(Worst case you play it late in the season to avoid wasting it altogether)

WC2 is never going to be my consideration, even if I get zero points from BB 😀 In last 2 attempts at BB1, I have managed to keep WC till GW7 and GW13, infact it gets easier to delay WC due to strong bench.

Sacrifice of those players is easier to make as compared to a semi premium asset during DGW, say, Havertz or Mahrez.

I wouldnt recommend BB1 to anyone but it is what it is, fits well with my "keep things simple" approach. For others, your suggested route makes sense.

Absolutely this. As the season progresses you’ll have a week when you just can’t decide who to start/bench.

Use it then. Chip is worth 10-14 points realistically

People who say it’s worth more have weakened their 11, or taken hits, to build for it. And then taken more hits to unwind the mess.

Nett result they get minus points over x weeks just to play it & falsely claim they got 30pts on BB

Would be more of a fan if it didn't essentially require you to use WC in GW2. Overhauling your team based on a one week sample size is a recipe for disaster IMO. I think it's better to let the season play out a bit so you don't end up taking silly punts off whoever does well in GW1.

I suppose you could try and save the WC but then you're going the first few weeks with a lot of money rooted to the bench at a time when it's crucial to be maximizing your points before the new, early template forms.

My rationale last season included the plan to WC in GW2 (I'm normally a late WCer) due to the missing fixtures for Manchester teams in GW1, and their good fixtures afterwards. I like to go a bit heavier than the average manager on the bigger or richer teams as I feel they are more likely to be in the points even if playing bad. A bit more stability (yet also excitement!) instead of scrambling to fill lower-mid and budget slots in the team throughout the first 10 GWs or so, which seems to be a common theme. Depends on what's available for what cost though, as always. Inevitably I miss more decent bandwagons than the average manager too. What was the topic again?

I like it. Double Liverpool defnece could be brilliant. Apart from the obvious misses of Shaw and Digne, you can consider
      Havertz to Grealish
      1. Not sure if Havertz is nailed on because of the attacking options Chelsea have.
      2. Ars liv tot away in the first 5 so could be a low ceiling in those matches.
      3. Grealish first 3 look brilliant if he stays at Villa.

Thats more than enough since the games are over 2 days only, having too many subs wont have much impact from this stage.

11 plus a sub loooks good. If you have a high value player eliminated in the other three, then I'd be tempted to just take that one hit.

I want Sancho to start to but not at the expense of Sterling. Benching Sterling is ridiculous. Rash hasn't done anything either albeit in limited minutes.

Sterling Sancho and Grealish could and should easily all be starting together. I'd drop Kane before Sterling

He's set in a system and he feels Sancho or Grealish may upset that. Pity, given how much better those 2 players are than Saka but that's his tactics and he'll live and die by them..

    6. Piggs Boson

Defensive contribution and intelligence most likely. In the 3 minutes on average they are in possession of the ball, Sancho and Grealish are outstanding. But what are they doing in the other 87 minutes? Not as much as Saka. So it depends what the team needs at the time.

Southgate and Holland have studied intensely how to win tournaments. Holland has worked with Jose and Conte, winning the Premier League with both. They both have huge experience and access to incredibly detailed data analysis and information. I trust their judgement over my own!

      C'mon England! 🙂

Grealish puts in a solid shift for 90 minutes. He’s a workhorse.

    So far got in:

Any thoughts on any others that maybe in for a rise?

No one really knows but as soon as you think a team is going through then target some of those players is all I can say. Rises n drops are happening at anytime including mid match

    Who to cpt

    A) Yarmo
    B) Forsberg

ML rival 20 ahead has Forsberg but not Yarmo.

Pace myself or take a chance now?

Nice team Tom and an interesting approach. My major worry is KDB is seeming to get injured quite regularly now.

I’ve been trying to tinker with a few drafts that are a bit different- I’m quite liking this one- interested in thoughts.

    Martinez/Foster
    TAA, Stones, Shaw, Fofana, Cresswell
    Salad, Grealish, Foden, havertz, soucek
    Pulling, Toney, saint max

My initial thought is captaincy. I think it's fine to give it to Salah in GW1, 2, 5 and 6, but definitely not 3, and I'm not convinced he'll be the best option in 4 either. Might be worth having a think about that.

Cheers, yeah good point. I’m probably carrying too much risk there in terms of captaincy. Will continue tinkering.

          Great comeback.

Surely you see that incessant RMTs and "A or B" questions that no-one can possibly answer yet as there are too many unknowns this early are a futile exercise?

    VVD or Robbo?
Doesn’t VVD offer the same attacking threat/points ?
Each corner and free kick it seems he’s gonna score. He even scored once in 370 mins he played last season before getting injured

I like the idea, because I love having KDB in my team (and can't leave out Salah and Fernandes). A lot will depend on whether he gets pens, because I can't justify 12m on someone who isn't on pens.

A lot are looking at going without city, scary thought in GW2, and Salah and Fernandes don't have bad enough fixtures to transfer them out comfortably.

    Thoughts on this draft?

    Sanchez
    Lamptey TAA Shaw
    Salah(C) Bruno Jota James Buendia
    DCL Watkins

Bench: 4,0 keeper, Ayling 4,0 def. Obafemi
