FPL team guide 2021/22 – Everton: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with this preview of Everton.

The Toffees are another club under new management, with the departure of Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid precipitating Rafael Benitez’s arrival.

You can read more about the incoming Spaniard in our dedicated Scout Report.

Despite many lines from Ancelotti about a European charge last season, Everton only just scraped a top-half finish by finishing in 10th.

Having gone goal-crazy in the early part of 2020/21, Everton’s attacking output slowed down significantly though the Toffees were relatively sticky in defence.

Don’t forget that you can find official Opta team and player information on the Blues and every other Premier League side in our Premium Members Area, to help with your planning for Gameweek 1.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

Benitez’ Blues

Everton’s league position was followed closely by their ranks in defensive statistics:

Everton defensive statsTotalRank v other PL teams
Goals conceded4810th
Shots conceded50513th
Shots in the box conceded31212th
Shots on target conceded16111th
Big chances conceded7210th=
Expected goals conceded (xGC)50.711th

The Toffees kept a respectable 12 clean sheets under Ancelotti last season, the joint-fifth best record in the division.

But eight of those arrived in the Toffees’ final 15 fixtures and no Premier League club kept more shut-outs from Gameweek 25 onwards, so Benitez inherits a defence in decent shape.

A miserly backline is something we might expect under the new Everton boss. His all-time Premier League record saw the Spaniard’s sides concede at a clip of less than a goal per game, while averaging 1.53 goals per match.

“We will try to have a team that has balance. Balance means attack and defend, and be sure that you can compete against anyone.” – Rafa Benitez

Don’t understand why some people are so determined to get a City mid to start the season… when Harrison is the highest scoring City player you know something isn’t right.

Pep has killed all City fpl assets.

It's fairly easy to build a strong nailed starting 10 +1 city as a gamble (with 4.5m defenders as back up). High risk, high reward. Depends how you want to play it.

Where’s the high reward though when I mentioned Harrison had the highest points total… They will probably get a cameo too if benched so subbing on another player is gone

the high reward is if you get the right one at the right time. Harrison will have played more minutes.

I wouldn't bother with any City attacking player. The only player I've considered is Dias and even then I decided there isn't enough attacking potential compared to the wealth of wing backs there are available for less money.

Whoever plays is likely to score well. You might not get a city player for the season, but I'd say there's a fair to good chance Mahrez and Gundog will start the first game or two.

Exactly. You can make a strong case for opening 5 GWs or so for Mahrez, Torres and Gundo. After that City should have a full healthy squad and it becomes a mare to pick out the right ones

KDB vs Norwich in gw2 is my one and only reason if I go with KDB. Apart from that their fixtures aren't the kindest either.

In comparison Salah and Bruno have easier fixtures than City players.

Not for now but KDB will undoubtedly outscore Harrison and most else...if he stays fit.
Grealish at City would be straight in my team, as with everyone. That's about it for me. Defenders are a risk at that price what with Pep roulette

Not going to win FPL without some low-owned city assets imo. The ownership on KdB, Sterling, Mahrez is scarily good.

What's the point of comparing Harrison's season total to that of City players? No one picking a City mid is planning to hold them for the entire season. You pick them when you think they will play, hope that they're explosive over that period, and then sell them.

If I own Mahrez for let's say the first 3 GWs and he gets me 20 points and I then move him on what do I care if another player beats him over the 38 GW season?

      1. Pukki Blinders
        • 4 Years

Because Harrison was a City player. I agree City assets are a short term game but predicted who plays and who does well if a whole other thing, it’s more or less gambling. I don’t have the risk tolerance to do that so early in the season

I found seeing Harrison at the top of the City mids table quite sobering. Made me realise City assets aren't the be-all-and-end-all, even if I'm tipping them to win the PL.

Pukki was great for a few games, Bamford plays for Leeds who IMO are far superior to Brentford. A lot of people have high hopes for them but I think they are being over-rated. I would rather have a proven PL striker like Antonio or Nacho. But hey , I have been wrong before :p

Toney had a xGI of 0.99 last season. I know it’s the championship but that’s damn impressive. Next highest in the PL was Antonio with around 0.5.

For me, yes it's trying to be different. How many RMT have you seen that start sanchez, trent, etc...its so boring to read, you can practically guess the team after reading the first 5 names.

Also, Watford did well defensively in the championship, so at least they have a base from which to build on.

I'm unconvinced by the form of last seasons all-of-a-sudden great Brighton defence. For just how long is it sustainable?

And the clincher is the all-knowing, all-revealing Youtube highlights reel. He made some good saves, is a big lad, saved a few pens so he could alright.

It's all a gamble at the end of the day.

      Good luck whoever you choose.

People say Bruno had a horrible end to last season…

but in the second half of last season he still managed to get third highest total points in the game and second highest xGI.

He’s a bit of a flat track bully and doesn’t face a top 6 team until GW9. Going without is not a option for me, regardless of these nonsense 433 murmurs.

Also let me add that Martial, Rashford and Sancho dancing around the penalty box is bound to attract penalties.

I'm prevaricating. I worked out that Salah combines superbly with Son for captaincy. If I'm not giving Bruno the armband, 12m can be spread better on cheaper players.

        Yep

Possibly following a similar trajectory - adding in Nacho as a possible C. Not sure how closely people have loked at captaincy. Bruno is a bit part player on most scenarios I can see.

Still slightly puzzled at how to spend the money. I get a 5.5 extra mid but it's not actually a class I fancy that much.

Anyone considering doubling with lamptey and Sanchez? Burnley without wood and Watford at home I actually don’t mind the look of that for double defence

If you play wildcard around GW2-10 like most players then you can decide if you want to go risky or safer with a more evenly spread squad for those weeks.

I would favour risky as their is a high chance of even a safe team throwing a curveball early with strange selections etc.

I went triple Soton defence a couple of years back and all in all I did about average with the defenders but the money saved up front allowed me to get a decent start. Still not sure the stress of these average teams trying to hold a clean sheet is worth it though. If you watch Brighton last year they always tried to sit on leads, which means you could have a helluva nervy finish to games 😆

Looking back every season to 2012/13 vs COVID to confirm the impact of empty stadiums. (Couldn't easily find data pre 2012 and didn't want to spend forever looking.)

Goals scored, nothing significant to note.
    COVID 2.69
    FANS 2.73

    BTTS
    COVID 49%
    FANS 51%

So in general a similar amount of goals and similar likelihood of a CS.

Where it does appear to make a big difference is Home vs Away.

    Result %
    COVID H 38% D 22% A 40%
    FANS H 46% D 24% A 30%

    Goals
    COVID H 1.35 A 1.34
    FANS H 1.54 A 1.19

    What are your thoughts?

Does it put rotating defenders or goalkeepers back on the map?

Is having a home/away captain combo more important than last season?

Might the season ticker be slightly out of kilter whilst it adjusts?

Could it be trickier for the new teams whose players are not used to the big stadiums? Brentford in particular. Watford and Norwich to a lesser extent. Possibly even Leeds but I don't think so.

So I am going 3-5-2 and 5th midfielder will be rotational. I am pretty sure you guys won't approve first guy like this to be Zaha, but IMO he can do quite well in GW2 vs Brentford and in GW1 I would like to see CHE defence owners to lose points (in my minileague all of them has at least 1 CHE defender/GK) + it would be a gamble to use one guy that will deliver, but I would him next week anyway... I will try him and save the free transfer to later adjustment to actual from.

    FYI: the rest is:

    Schmeichel + Ward (9 mil)
    Robertson + Regulion + Coufal + Lamptey + Bednarek (26 mil)
    Salah + Son + Grealish + Barnes + Zaha (44.5)
    DCL + Watkins + Obafemi (20)

ITB : 0.5 mil (Grealish with downgrade after GW3 to give me flexibility on budget).

    1. Club-De-Belon
      • 2 Years
      2 years, 8 months ago

about Bednarek. Southampton were defensively sound in H2'19/20 and H1'20/21 and he is a nice option in few GWs (3-NEW + 6-WOL + 9-BUR + 10-WAT + 12-NOR) when I will need to rotate defence a litlle due to opposition like MCI / LEI / CHE / TOT / LIV, etc.

Is it dumb to use a ‘placeholder’ in game week 1

I don’t really want to play Raph against United game week 1 so was thinking of starting with Bowen and potentially swapping to Raph and if not Bowen’s fixtures still look pretty good anyway

I know this isn’t the done thing but does anyone take this approach ?

Do you mean a fixed transfer planned after GW1? Never a good idea. Have a proper first sub and use him. Better still, play Raph - he can haul v anyone.

People are forgetting that at Newcastle, Rafa utilised his wingbanks alot more. The same could happen at Everton and Digne with his delivery may be perfect for Rafa's system.

      We played 5-2-3 / 5-4-1

But the main attacking style was counter attack and Rondon to win the long ball, Perez and Almiron to feed off the scraps. The wing backs were not pushing up very high and flying into the box.

      1. Well you know, Triffic
        • 13 Years
        2 years, 8 months ago

"The slight difference with Newcastle’s attacking transitions under Benitez was the use of the fullbacks. During their attacking transitions, Newcastle mainly looked to get their wingbacks on the ball in the wide areas. The wingers pushed inside to play off the centre-forward and make runs off of him."

"In 2018/19, Newcastle managed an average of 18.7 crosses per game. In 2019/20, they only averaged 15.6. The wingbacks were the predominant crossers for them under Rafa."

They won't push high up, but Digne will be crossing it from deep for DCL imo.

I don't know the site, but what I do know is I've watched every toon game for the last 12 years. I think with a better team and better wing backs Rafa will let them go higher and might recognise them as key players. We had the likes of Yedlin Kennedy and Dummet...
