Salah starts with approximately a 35 point head start over Ronny and Lukaku. If you permacapped him v Ron or Lukaku that would represent up to 70 more points. Brave

Will probably bring Raphinha in next week for Benrahma.

Just look at my current team, judge the amount of fires, and the players I want. If the fires are irredeemable through FTs and I think I'm sacrificing too much by not WCing now I'll WC now.

Sounds obvious but I WC at what feels likely to be the optimum gap between what my team is and what my team could be. I usually prefer early not late for a few reasons. I find disasters that force it rarely materialise, there is an advantage to having a lead and having desirable players, and I prefer to work on predicting continuation of early season signs of great form, rather than turnaround in form mid season or collapse in form.

I've gone with this week, this year. I don't really understand why people are holding out for 7. Chelsea players can very easily be got in for FTs or a mini WC (-4). This week has much more enticing swings in fixtures, emerging players, doubts over fitness/COVID, multiple price rises to desirable players etc etc that can all be navigated better with a WC. GW7 has.... better fixtures for Chelsea who look fixture proof anyway

I agree with this, in terms of gw 7, I think on wc now you could grab 1 Chelsea defender and hold then with Ronaldo > lukaku you are already on the double by gw7

        1. Pacer.
          • 9 Years

Every chance Chelsea post clean sheets in difficult games. Most people will likely have two Chelsea players, Lukaku and a defender, possibly Mount as a third but that will probably be completely unnecessary as he's good but not essential (yet). It's a puzzling phenomenon this year that GW7/8 has been identified by an overwhelming majority of average or better managers but apparently without any real justification

      2. Pinturicchio10
          2 years, 6 months ago

This season you could say the same for just about any gwk that is favoured for WC activation. The fixture swings can be planned for and aren't really that extreme anyway. Activating WC as late as possible is just as viable as activating it now.

Agreed. Having put my team through a team planner, it seems fairly easy to save my WC even longer with decent planning. GW8 team, for example, looks strong.

How many fires you have x how many players you want. It’s simple.

My team had Tsimikas, Brownhill, Ings, Kane, Amartey, White and i wanted CR7, DCL, Jota, Wolves + Leeds, easy decision.

A lot will be lazy and just say when your team needs it but as you’ve only had 1 season I’ll spend a bit more time.
Several reasons I wild card, but not all necessarily need to apply at the same time.
        - I often target a period in time to wild card, almost always during an international break, and then almost always the first one. Reason is you have had 3 weeks to see what players and what teams are performing. In addition new players like Ronaldo and Lukaku get added to the game. Obviously during an international break you get a lot longer on your wild card but as so many others are wild carding, combined with others who are not but don’t want to make early transfers, the price changes are very slow.
        - I might target a fixture change. Let’s say Arsenals league position was inverted. Aubameyang might have been popping off in pre season but I didn’t want him for the early fixtures. Now the fixtures are seeet so I’d get him. Apply same logic to Jimenez etc. As it stands I’ll almost certainly target game week 7 international break and load up on Chelsea et al.
        - My team had a few punts and dodgy options, whilst some at first low owned gems are scoring heavily and rocketing in price while mine are all plummeting (the play it when your team needs it wild card). Bandwagons are rolling left and right and I don’t want to be stuck in the millions and taking hits for players that others already own, thus dropping me further.
        - The fun option. Your team is overly template. So your team doesn’t really need a wild card and you’d be plenty safe sticking with your team. You’d ask “should I wild card this?” and everyone would say no. But it’s template as hell and you’re just not climbing the rankings and looking at your team you get tears of boredom. You wanna shake things up and just go with something completely different.
        Hope this helps.

Nobody wins FPL by getting a 'decent grip'. By the time you have a 'decent grip' you have lost FPL. So I guess it depends what your aim is. If you want to chase a lifetime of top 100k finishes then play safe. If you are playing to win then you are going to have to make some moves that other people are not all making

Seems pretty rude and wrong to dismiss the comment as worthless when many managers play this game to win. The fact that the odds are stacked massively against them is what makes it great. Ask Joe or Mark what their aim is, they'll tell you their aim is to win (as they have both said before iirc).

Every single player that signs up to this game plays to win. Unfortunately, the extreme amounts of variance involved means it's an extremely unrealistic ambition and thus not a great way to back up your points - you can win FPL with a late WC anyways.

Well, again, it depends on your ambitions, which will dictate your approach. If your ambition is to win a work mini league populated by very average managers your approach can be more risk averse than if you are somehow going to beat the template.

And yeah I agree, you can win it with a late wildcard. Though you're unlikely to do that with information that represents a 'decent grip' as the more solid your information is the more diminished are your chances of climbing rank

that's interesting. I was wavering on hitting my WC as I'm currently on a -8 after moving Barnes, Bruno and Perica to Gray , Torres and Ronaldo. I might well take the -8 on the chin now and wait for GW7/8

For the 1st WC (2nd WC is a bit different because of interaction with other chips):

        - Do I have enough data / insight to be able to see the trends in teams and players?
        - Based on the above, does my current team need enough changes to make a WC worthwhile over a number of GWs?
        - Will I be WCing to a team that is basically template and if so is that worth it?
        - How easy is it for me to use FTs to change players out of my WC team over the long term so I benefit from a WC over a much longer period (i.e., sustainability)?

Save for as long as you can but if you feel you need to use it then do it. Last season I ended up using it in GW2 (and I didn't need to do it to get in MU or MC assets as I left Bruno on the bench in GW1) because I took a hit to get in 2 players and then late on Friday night it came out that one was injured. I didn't want to take a -8 or more so early but I looked at my team and despite a good start felt I made some errors with planning forwards, so I used my WC then and ended up doing a lot better than I would have without it.

This season I looked at my team after GW3 and realised I had a lot of issues to deal with (Tsimi, Barnes, Wilson, no Antonio) and then throw in Ronaldo and I felt I'm best to just go for it and go for it early with question marks over IB quarantines and with it giving me a chance to build value.

If your GW1 team is full of players who are not fit for purpose then the WC comes into play. The longer you wait the more information you have about who will be the best players for the season.

For instance, we haven't seen what CR7's impact on MU will be yet. As soon as we do, everyone who has played their WC already will probably want another WC.

The same can be said for a lot of teams. Arsenal haven't got their first team out yet. Could still be crap, might not be...

Wolves are looking good with no return to speak of as yet. New players bedding in, great fixtures, could be gold...

etc etc. Wait if you can

the downside of this is that the more information you have, the more information everyone else also has. Do you want a middling to good finish, or do you want to take gambles and attempt to beat that crowd.

Even I was in the same dilemma....then I just got to the transfers page and made an "desired 15" for the long run uptill GW15.
Since it was not possible to get to that team within 2-3 GWS and without taking a lot of hits, I wildcarded. Plus the fact that I was 185k also lead to me thinking some kind of gamble was necessary rather than playing it safe to get into the Top 10k during the starting GWs of the season

Even though I’m only on 200 total points and lagging it’s just too early for me and don’t have enough changes right now.
Game week 7/8 is a great time to take advantage of fixture swings, my only concern is we will see so many teams the same.

I almost always use it in GW2-4. Despite doing our homework we never know for sure who will start on form and who the potential bandwagons might be. I think after 2-3 GWs we get a fair idea plus I hate holding it probably partly down to lack of patience and the feeling that it's holding me back.

The first wildcard, I never plan it in around fixtures. I just look at my team every week and ask myself whether or not I NEED to wildcard. This can be due to:
        - injuries (obvious one)
        - early season patterns that I didn't expect, like Liverpool suddenly becoming defensively inept at the start of the season 2/3 years ago.
        - multiple players that I don't own whose form makes them pretty much a necessity.
        - multiple price changes about to occur to my team/players I want all at the same time.
If a combination of these points are automatically leading me towards a -8 or more than I'll look at whether I can use the wildcard to make loads of changes to improve more positions.

I'm happy to take a -8 or a -12 if no other changes are needed/wanted. Any more than that and I am wildcarding for sure.

The second wildcard I have always anned around double gameweeks, but more and more I am thinking this is not a good strategy, so may well change this year.

People keep referring to "wildcarding from a position of strength". What does this mean? I see that as people justifying an early wildcard - because some "expert" has come out with that line.

And what does that mean to someone whose team is an utter mess? That they should not use the wildcard? Just carry on plummeting and taking multiple hits to fix the team until they are in a "strong" position? Nonsense.

Can FPL implement the manual substitution rule. It will help those who actively playing the game & destroy a lot of dead teams.
It’s just fpl with this auto sub rule which doesn’t make sense to me

      Which pairing?

      A) Mendy (GK), benrahma

      B) Mesilier\sa, Jota

Prefer a more as benny is more nailed than Jota and already have torres and greenwood. Also prefer Mendy than other 5 mil keepers.

Fabio Borges is the best FPL manager in the world (the only one who could beat Mark in the great and the good league last season) and he has come the closest to finding a secret formula/algorithm to crack FPL.

Anyway. This is how he does it ..............

"Then, four seasons ago, I found out about xG. And since then it’s the only stat I use (along with xA) when making FPL decisions. Of course, it is not perfect but if the model is reliable – and you know how to interpret it – I believe it is, by far, the most useful stat for FPL.

I make my own xG tables which I try to update as often as possible. I put a lot of work into it and I try to adjust players’ xG numbers by using their career xG Delta (when the sample is big enough).

There are players who are consistent xG overperformers and others that underperform the model for long periods of time. For example, Kevin De Bruyne overperforms the model by 35% while Jesus underperforms it by around 25%.

I think it’s important to use xG Delta because you can easily be fooled by some great xG numbers from a particular player who is a consistent underperformer/bad finisher. And vice versa.

Another tool that I use a lot is Mikkel’s algorithm on Patreon. I often use it to compare with my own xG tables and when a player looks good on both models, it usually means he is a good transfer target."

Underlying stats really are king, it's amazing how many of the best players use them. Fabio's record is unbelievably strong.

Haven't heard of this xG delta before, guess it's normal xG with a finishing % applied?

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years

It’s just actual goals less XG

score 3 goals from 1 XG = +2 XG delta
Score 1 goal from 3 XG = -2 XG delta

XGi delta is a more all encompassing measure than XG delta though as it’ll also factor in assists which also attract a lot of FPL points

But the elephant in the room is Opta’s XG model

I sincerely hope Fabio isn’t talking about it when he says “I found XG” because there are dozens of XG models out there - the simplest is just each shot =0.1 XG (as on average it’s about 10 shots per goal)

Opta’s model has several quite concerning limitations - not least that they cap open play goals at a max of 0.25 XG (Lingard’s open goal vs Leicester for example, Rashfords free header in front of goal vs West Ham etc)

And they also do some other smoke & mirrors/jiggery-pokery with “chains” where they add/deduct all the passes in the run up to the shot that it’s hard enough to get any transparency on

          1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
            • 14 Years

*cap open play (actually non-penalty is probably a better descriptor as it’ll factor in set piece driven attempts) shots obvs, not just goals

Interesting, basically xG that factors in form - a concept that many "stats players" believe isn't relevant in FPL decision making.

I'd assume Fabio uses fbref for xG, very accurate measure.

It’s not necessarily purely “form” as such, as a striker could be in bad “form” with 3 goals from 15 games, but his XG delta will look amazing if he’s done that from 0.5XG

And vice-versa, he could be in great “form” with 12 goals from 15 games, but if he’s done that from 20 XG (a deliberately extreme example) his XG delta will look bad

XG delta is more of a look at the finishing ability of the player vs the average - if XG is the average, XG delta will tell you how far above/below average the guy is in terms of finishing

XGi delta same thing, but expanding to include at assists, the XA element of which will then start to get contaminated by factors outside the control of the player (I.e, finishing ability of his teammates etc)

                • 14 Years
                2 years, 6 months ago

Sterling for example - is roughly an 8% below average finisher with 86 career league goals from 93 XG

And you can kind of see that when you watch him with the sheer amount of chances he wastes

                  2 years, 6 months ago

Anthony Martial on the other hand is a roughly 12% above average finisher - with 64 career league goals from 57 XG
