Raphinha, Jesus, Firmino and more Brazil players may miss FPL Gameweek 4

Eight more Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players could be stopped from featuring in Gameweek 4.

Raphinha (£6.5m), Fabinho (£5.4m), Roberto Firmino (£8.8m), Alisson (£6.0m), Ederson (£6.0m), Gabriel Jesus (£8.6m), Thiago Silva (£5.4m) and Fred (£5.0m) may all miss out this weekend as a consequence of their non-involvement with Brazil over the international break.

That’s because, under FIFA law, players not released to their respective countries can be banned for five days after the international window ends – and that period spans September 10-14 in this case, which includes Gameweek 4.

Those sanctions will only occur if a national football association requests FIFA to invoke them, something the Brazilian FA have done this afternoon.

Curiously, though, the BBC reports that Brazil have not asked for Everton’s Richarlison (£7.5m) to be prevented from featuring against Burnley on Monday night in an act of goodwill, as the Toffees previously allowed their forward to be called up for Olympic Games duties when not obliged to do so.

The football federations of Mexico, Paraguay and Chile have also asked for punishment to be meted out, meaning that Raul Jimenez (£7.4m), Miguel Almiron (£5.4m) and Francisco Sierralta (£4.4m) may not be allowed to play this weekend.

We’ve yet to have an official response from the Premier League or the clubs affected, and we’ll bring you more news on this as and when we get it.

Anyone travelling to a red-list country faces quarantine for 10 full days in a managed hotel on their return to the UK, and Premier League players are no exception.

As far as we’re aware, there are only five such FPL assets that fall into this category in the September international break.

Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m), Emiliano Buendia (£6.4m), Davinson Sanchez (£4.5m), Giovani Lo Celso (£5.9m) and Cristian Romero (£4.9m) had all previously been given permission by their clubs to head to South America and all of them will miss Gameweek 4 as a result.

The quintet are available for their countries’ first two World Cup qualifying matches but will not take part in the third international fixture – meaning that their quarantine periods will have ended by the time Gameweek 5 comes around.

The ban seems like a restriction of trade … not legal in U.K.

it’s not the employer doing the suspension though, it’s a third party. Privity of contract and all that

Are they a third party, or a "higher power" though? Probably one for CAS anyway.

the contract of employment is between the player and club, clearly.

Given all the madness happening this GW, I'm happy to have not taken hits or played my WC yet. This team G2G?

    0.5 ITB & 0FT

    Sanchez
    TAA - Shaw - Reguilon
    Salah - Bruno - Barnes - Benrahma
    Antonio - Toney - Ings

    Foster - Veltman - Tsim - Brownhill

    Feeling Ings + Bruno > Ronaldo + Jota/Sarr (-4) for next week

Any issues you see here for this or next week?

the important part of the article is that the club didn't refuse to release him so they shouldn't be included in the ban. If a player choses not to play they can not ban him.

        1. If this plays out and the players are banned, Brazil open themselves up to a genuine lawsuit on the part of Argentina. They can't say the Blue and White EPL based players can't play, and then bitch that their own EPL players didn't show up. It would become a defacto instance of political interference, something specifically referenced in the laws of the game.
        2. Brazil officially deselected said players. So are they saying that they didn't now?
        3. Rapha declined his call-up. As such, he's not officially a Brazilian player to be sanctioned under any FIFA laws. Imagine the shithousery of calling up players and then having them banned for not showing up. What a load of utter bollocks.

Hope it brings things to a head with the amount of pointless qualifiers involving pub teams and constant disruptive international breaks in the middle of the domestic season. The international competitions need to be seriously streamlined.

100%. So dead boring. The qualifiers should be just before the tournament, almost like a warm up.

Just realised that doesn't make sense as nobody will know what they're doing.

I guess not so much different to right now then.

Typically, you look at this from an entirely Euro-centric perspective and especially from the viewpoint of how things impact FPL. There are other things to consider than the PL and its fantasy game.

Because of primarily historic economic imbalances, the big money in club football is in Europe's big-5 leagues. Not only do they suck in the best talent from across the continent but nowadays they take it from across the globe.

South America is a football hotbed, always has been, but they are used to their best players departing for Europe where the fans can't see them other than on TV. They therefore set great store in their national teams (much more so than in Europe by and large) and have always taken pride in seeing the European-based players coming home and playing in the national shirt.

FIFA (whatever you think of it as an organisation) has a duty to foster and stand up for football everywhere, not just in Europe. It also has an interest in asserting the primacy of international football over the club game. That's where the situation stands. You can say that international breaks affect the club season. FIFA would say that the club season should be shorter to accommodate international football, and they do say so because their recommendation is for 18-team leagues.

I'm not saying I agree with FIFA. Personally I'm a Chelsea supporter that goes to games and I don't give a damn about England, don't even bother watching them on TV nowadays. But you have to realise that it looks different elsewhere (where qualifying is generally harder; there are no minnows in CONMEBOL in the way there are in Europe).

What you are arguing for is for economic power to be used to bludgeon down the less advantaged and put them in their place. The ESL, which everyone objected to, was attempting to do that same thing. So it seems to me that you'll be all for fans rights and a level playing field when it comes to your club but not when it comes down to Chilean or Mexican fans whose prime priority is to be able to watch their best players in the national shirt.

          1. the ARG players lied about where they came from didn't they?
          2. they had to deselect them because they were told they wouldn't be going, it's not like they 'chose' to

Probably play White instead. Got a feeling the Saints will score and be freshened up.
