The best FPL forwards to consider as Calvert-Lewin and Antonio replacements

With Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m) set for a spell on the sidelines and a ban ruling Michail Antonio (£7.9m) out of Gameweek 5, many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are unexpectedly in the market for a new forward.

At the time of writing, the pair are the two most-sold forwards in FPL, but should we be selling them, and if so, who are the best replacements?

In this, our latest Fantasy Football Scout Members article, we’ll attempt to answer those questions.

Why are so many selling Antonio?

His next 2 fixtures after the ban are good!

People are shifting from Premium Mids to Premium Forwards. Stick with Antonio and if he comes back on fire you win. If not you lose.

Ouch. Yeah I agree, really harsh for him to get completely dropped after dropping the masterclass he did last season

Trent Cancelo James Chilwell would be a great back four to go with from GW7 if Chilwell manages to get his spot back!

yeah, going with both WBs might be a risk too far so James & Rudi might be the answer

    Sanchez, 4.0
    TAA, Shaw, Digne, Marcal, Coufal
    Salah, Jota, Greenwood, Benrahma, Brownhill
    Ronaldo, Antonio, Scarlett

    1FT, 0.8itb

    Should I:

    A - Antonio to Bamford
    B - Benrahma to Raphinha
    C - Coufal to Laporte
    D - Any 2 of the above for -4

My initial plan was to do B as I'm not keen on triple West Ham v triple Utd. I would've played Antonio but for his suspension and benched Coufal.

Leaning towards C now as I would only really play Coufal in gw7 and he's been an expensive sub so far. Plus having a City defender isn't the worst thing. Only thing though is that it would leave me playing a 5-4-1 formation for gw5.

    Thoughts?

    1. RogDog_jimmy
      • 3 Years

What if you just downgrade Coufal to Duffy for this week - free up some cash.
You defense is kind of stacked at the moment. Still go 5-4-1 then next week you have options with 1.7itb.

Coufal to Tierney, Ben to Raph might repay the hit this week, then Tierney and Marçal can rotate for starts from GW6

Shaw and Digne can become City and Chelsea D any time from GW7

      1. House Frey Wedding Planner
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 6 months ago

It's my plan to get a City and Chelsea defender in my team for gw7/8. I was gonna hold Digne until after the Watford game in gw9 and then downgrade to a 4.0 defender to free up funds. Digne's form is frustrating though.

I'm not sure I want to use too many transfers on defenders so thinking of getting in Laporte or James now may be the way to do it

It won't be improved that much though cos your 3 forwards are costing more than 30% of your team. Downgrade Ronaldo or Lukaku to upgrade midfield.

I think Spurs might be a trap defensively. I know I know...Nuno is very defensive, but they concede tons of shots, 2nd only to Norwich currently (i think), and after watching the Palace match, I'm as low as can be on them. And i mean before the red.

I have Dier, and it might just be a mistake.

      1. Jafooli
        • 12 Years
        2 years, 6 months ago

Sanchez had 3 x CS before CPL game (which he didn't play in). Perhaps he was the reason for the poor performance.

That and the Dier I injury

        1. Gabbiadini
          • 6 Years

No, one player was certainly not the case for how poor Spurs were defensively.

        2. Gunneryank
          • 2 Years
          2 years, 6 months ago

I mean, Dier and Sanchez not being on the pitch for the majority of the game had an impact sure, but i'm betting it goes beyond that. I think Spurs are used to being able to use their strengths going forward (yes even with Mourinho, look at their scoring record), and this team with Nuno look nothing like that anymore. They are being asked by Nuno to be more conservative and when you sit back, you invite pressure, and concede more shots, which is what we see with them now. And Spurs defenders aren't used to playing that way. You can be good defensively and still attack effectively, as we see in multiple teams. Deliberately having such a negative mentality is, in my opinion, not a sound defensive strategy. I know their first 3 games flies in the face of what i'm saying, but if you watch the games, you can see it.

Am I being pigheaded or should I diversify more?

    Ramsdale/Sanch? 4.0
    TAA Shaw Livra Marcal Semedo
    Salah Jota Mason Gallagher Raph
    Ronaldo Bamford Dennis

    Right, reasoning;
Pool and Leeds have the fixs. Utd has the form. Wolves pair have the fixs and freedom to attack.
No leftovers, strong bench. Che players brought in gw7.

    Ifs/ buts:
Bamford the most obvious. If he’s out Lukaku comes in which means mids take a significant drop in quality and price. TAA, Mo and CR remain in the team. Basically these four players need to carry the team week in week out. Also really dependant on Utd, Wol, Leeds, Pool. Maybe too much.

Do you think I’m too stubborn in my thinking regarding the teams in question? Does it need City/Chelsea in there now or am I on to something?

there will be some rotation now due to champions league football
might see some kdb or gundogun false 9s.

but in terms of who plays the most games as the no.9 this season, well I think that will be Torres, yes.

Agree here. Barring a purchase in the winter window or just resting him due to fixture congestion i bet he plays most important games. I bet Pep rests him against minnows in the cups or what have you.

(S)alah vs Palace or (L)ukaku vs Spurs? Have it on Salah atm but might change later..

    This GW, would you play:

    A. Sanchez (LEI) & White (bur)

    B. Ramsdale (bur) & Duffy (LEI)

Who should I prioritise trading out?
have no FTs so either wait till next GW, or hit one out and trade the other next GW

    a) Toney
    b) Benrahma

Something like Benrahma to Sarr (-4) worth it?

prefer toney this gw, but he is almost must trade the week after imo.

Im considering Ibrahima Diallo from Soton. Looks like a 1pointer, but always looking for a chance

          Yes, interesting watch.
Romeu started the season carrying a knock and has been below his normal output, hence being substituted 3 times.

I wouldn't say he is the consistent selection, however. Stuart Armstrong can play the 6/8 and is still to come back from injury. Elyounoussi also played centrally against West Ham.

      how about McArthur?
nailed and better bps (avg) than Bissouma.
      0.1 cheaper if that matter

    Already on -4

    Sanchez (steele)
    TAA shaw reguillon white (Tsimikas)
    Salah Greenwood sarr benrahma (Gilmour)
    Ronaldo DCL Antonio

    1) DCL to Bamford for another hit
    2) time for WC
