My latest FPL Gameweek 8 Wildcard team: Foden, Son and Hwang in, Antonio out

A lot of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have pushed the Wildcard button, including me, so I thought it would be a good time to talk about my current draft after tinkering for about five days.

Please take note that this is a draft and I don’t know where I will be with my team when Gameweek 8 eventually arrives.

GOALKEEPERS

The best FPL goalkeepers for a Gameweek 7 Wildcard

Currently, my goalkeepers are Aaron Ramsdale (£4.6m) and Ben Foster (£4.0m). Foster currently sits in my team as the second ‘keeper because he’s the most likely starting £4.0m goalkeeper out of the other options but obviously, we don’t know for sure what the situation will be with Claudio Ranieri now at the helm.

The goalkeeper spot is one I’m struggling with the most at the moment. Ramsdale does look like he has the number one spot and it is between him, David Raya (£4.6m) and Robert Sanchez (£4.6m) for me. Arsenal with their new-look defence have looked fairly steady and like I mentioned last week in my article, we are not relying on the short sample size of this season alone. In the second half of last season, Mikel Arteta’s team were the fifth-best defence for expected goals conceded (xGC) in 2020/21. Also, Arteta does come across to me as a defence-first coach whereas the Bees might go out and play a little. I also like the look of defenders from Brighton and Hove Albion and Brentford, who offer a slightly higher goal threat compared to the £4.5m options from Arsenal.

DEFENDERS

Jimenez ends goal drought as Arsenal claim convincing north London derby win 7

In my defence, Tino Livramento (£4.2m) picks himself because of Southampton going on a great run of fixtures. He has shown a lot in attack and the Saints have shown some newfound defensive resilience as well right now.

    Thoughts on this wildcard team?

5-3-2 only for this week. 4-3-3 team.

I feel no City midfielder is bad…

    Sanchez
    Cancelo Dias Azpilicueta Duffy Livramento
    Salah Son Townsend
    Lukaku Aubameyang

    Raya Toney Normann Brownhill

For me I think Auba is a solid pick but Arsenal aren’t that attacking so I don’t see much upside.
Think Jimenez is likely to score similar so would downgrade to him and use the change to upgrade tour 4th mid so you can go 3-4-3 when you want to. Even just to Mbuemo and keep some change.

2 dead midfield slots feels wrong to me with so many cheap decent options in there

That back line is perfect for the formation you have picked, particularly if you like the double Brighton over a different keeper to Sanchez.

I went Saka instead of Auba just for the saving and I like the son/Salah/Lukaku picks.

Like Rogdog said, downgrading Auba to jiminez/tony/or even Jesus if you are concerned about missing out on city attack could give you that little bit extra to get saka (if you want arsenal attack), Mbumo/Gallagher/Raphinia etc.

In summary, back line is spot on, love son/Salah/Lukaku but maybe Auba could be used to spread the cash about a bit without compromising the team. After all, he won’t be your captain any time soon will he?

Always like to plan well ahead - the key is not this international break but the next one.

I've just been watching a video of Eze back in full training. Never mind the pencil I'm going to ink him for GW12 😉

When Eze and Olise start, Palace will have a decent attack.

Olise is quite possibly the one to be on tbh in FPL if Palace attack amounts to anything.

Delete penalties from Zaha and I imagine they return similarly with if anything the advantage to Olise. Probs need to wait a little for him to nail a starting spot but his delivery is sensational. Ended up with the best creativity stats on both sides against Leicester despite being on for 30 minutes.

(There is an if in that first sentence)

    New Community Article

Good piece from Virg on Fabio Borges and his love of career xG. Not too much attention is given to stats over multiple seasons as we're often so focused on form in FPL so this is a great topic to cover.

    C. Doucouré

I’ve got him in, Mbuno is the top sub 6 mil pick just now but the great thing is there is a lot of choice at that price so easy to swop if need to or bench/rotate vs a trickier fixture.

Seen a fair bit of Gallagher and he's a worthwhile pick - he consistently gets into some great positions.Finishing erratic the major problem and why he's only on two goals so far.

Think I'd probably go Townsend or possibly now slightly unfashionable Gray myself but really there's little between any of them. Think Townsend has the most routes to a return provided he keeps his spot.

James Tarkowski first on Newcastle’s radar in the January window apparently, he would drastically improve that defence in fairness. Was disappointed West Ham didn’t manage to persuade him to move last summer.

The Robinho-esque deadline day moves can wait until next year…

    Unpopular opinion:

Son will outscore both Lukaku and Ronaldo this season. If he doesn’t- he’ll be very close and at least 1.5 million cheaper.

With fixtures + captaincy taken into account, it may be hard to forgo the premium strikers. But I think there is merit having Salah pretty much perma-captain and Son as your two premiums

Maybe he did not want to give Tuchel any bad news?

Martinez did say he does not know how long Lukaku will be out for plus also said he is not in the best condition to play. Sounds more serious done muscle fatigue IMO.

I just tried to replicate this team but was miles off in terms of affordability. My team value in the Gameweek points section shows at 100.5, but when I remove all of my players i only have 99.9m to spend, my team value figure is quite misleading, almost pointless...as it doesn't represent the value of the team to me, just if you wanted to buy it from new on that given day.
