Kane and Wilson enter FPL differential conversation ahead of Gameweek 9

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 8 write-ups with analysis of Newcastle United v Tottenham Hotspur.

For a shorter summary of all of Saturday’s action, click here.

NEWCASTLE UNITED 2-3 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

  • Goals: Callum Wilson (£7.3m) | Tanguy Ndombele (£5.8m), Harry Kane (£12.1m), Son Heung-min (£10.1m)
  • Assists: Javier Manquillo (£4.0m), Jacob Murphy (£5.0m) | Sergio Reguilon (£5.1m), Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.9m), Kane
  • Own goals: Eric Dier (£4.6m)
  • Red cards: Jonjo Shelvey (£5.3m)
  • Bonus: Kane x3, Son x2, Wilson x2

KANE ENDS PREMIER LEAGUE GOAL DROUGHT

Kane and Wilson enter FPL differential conversation ahead of Gameweek 9 1

Having failed to score in any of his opening six Premier League appearances in 2021/22, Harry Kane (£12.1m) finally ended his goal drought against Newcastle United in Gameweek 8.

The England captain looked much more like his old self at St James’ Park, and resumed his link up with Son Heung-min (£10.1m) with an assist for the third goal. As a result, he bagged maximum bonus and ended the match with an impressive 12-point haul for his small army of owners.

Given Spurs’ next three fixtures – West Ham United (a), Manchester United (h) and Everton (a) – we perhaps have a little while longer to scout Kane’s performances, before his fixtures ease considerably between Gameweeks 12 and 15.

Kane and Wilson enter FPL differential conversation ahead of Gameweek 9 2

Interestingly, that also coincides with trickier runs for premium forwards Romelu Lukaku (£11.7m) and Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m), which may be a switch worth considering closer to the time, depending on how each of them perform during the coming weeks that is.

Son Heung-min, meanwhile, was once again on the scoresheet, and has now produced six attacking returns in just seven Premier League appearances this season.

NDOMBELE’S INFLUENCE

Tanguy Ndombele (£5.8m) fired in Spurs’ opener on Sunday, and impressed in his more advanced central role.

During the match, he registered five goal attempts and four shots in the box, more than any other player on the pitch. His 36 final-third touches – including nine in the penalty box – were also match-leading totals, and highlight his growing influence in Nuno Espirito Santo’s 4-2-3-1 formation.

Tottenham Hotspur’s average touch map v Newcastle United in Gameweek 8, featuring no. 28 Tanguy Ndombele

It’s also worth noting that since Oliver Skipp’s (£4.5m) return to the starting XI in Gameweek 7, Spurs have looked a lot better defensively, something Nuno touched on in his post-match interview when discussing his new midfield set-up:

“It worked really well. We were able to be more solid in the middle of the park with Skipp and Hojbjerg being side by side, although we still allowed one of them to have freedom to support in attack. It was the same idea but a little bit different and it worked better.”

WILSON BACK ON THE FPL RADAR

Newcastle’s new era got off to a disappointing start at St James’ Park, but the return of talisman Callum Wilson (£7.3m) from injury was a real positive.

It took the 29-year-old just two minutes to find the back of the net, as he ended the match with a goal, two bonus and eight FPL points.

As for the Magpies, the reality is that the club remain without a win this season and now sit 19th in the table. They also have the worst defensive record in the division, having conceded 19 goals so far, while the underlying numbers are equally as bad.

MetricTotalRank v other Premier League teams
Goals conceded1920th
Clean sheets019th=
Shots conceded12918th
Shots in the box conceded7214th
Shots on target conceded4219th
Big chances conceded2220th
xGC15.2420th
Non-penalty xGC12.8717th

Encouragingly for their FPL owners, the likes of Conor Gallagher (£5.7m), Romelu LukakuIvan Toney (£6.4m) and Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m) all take on the Magpies’ in the coming weeks.

“We were certainly beaten by the better team. After a wonderful start, unfortunately the problems that we’ve had for a while now defensively was there for everyone to see. The goals we gave away, you could say it was a lot of good play from Tottenham, but our defending left a lot to be desired to say the least.

I think we’ve started a few games like that – we’ve got off to a good start, we’ve scored and got our noses in front, but unfortunately at the moment, we’re not able to defend well enough as a team. I’m not criticising the back four or the midfield players, football is a team game, but from front to back at the moment, we’re not defending well enough.

We have tried to change and be a little bit more on the front foot, but it’s difficult because you cannot keep having to score three goals to win a match.” – Steve Bruce

Newcastle XI: Darlow, Manquillo, Lascelles, Clark, Ritchie, Hayden, Longstaff (Shelvey 60), Willock (Murphy 77), Joelinton, Saint-Maximin, Wilson (Fraser 77)

Tottenham XI: Lloris, Royal, Romero, Dier, Reguilon, Skipp, Hojbjerg, Ndombele, Moura, Son, Kane

Team I would pick with Salah an Mane, thoughts?

    Raya Foster
    Trent Reguilon Pinnock Duffy Livra
    Salah Mane Son Gray D.Luiz
    Toney Vardy Broja

Defence not that bad. With 2 wins on the trot and Kane breaking his duck, perhaps Spurs will turn the corner now and Reguilon is still a good pick. They could start tightening up at the back considering their run of fixtures coming up.

Double up on Brentford defence also looking good for their great fixture run.

I wouldnt risk Broja yet. Too soon to say if he is nailed
I doubt Reguilon is worth the money. Relies purely on assits. I would go White (if i am not to rotate some money away) or Janson (daring the double)

I’d like a Chelsea or City defender in place of Reguilon at the expense of Gray/Broja.

So tricky to choose between Lukaku and Vardy (Ronaldo out)! Heart says Vardy, head says Lukaku.

3 Red Arrows on the bounce and tempted to WC this lot, what do you think?

    Guatia* Foster
    TAA Livra Tierney Duffy Tmiskas*
    Salah Gallagher Saar Benrhama* Gilmour*
    Antonio* Ronaldo* Lukaku

Want to get rid of Saar too with poor run of fixtures. I was going to wait for GW12 to play it, otherwise this week I have 1FT, and not sure who to rid of first? No Chelsea or City defenders is a concern.

Yeah that's an easy WC. I would've pulled the trigger last week with no City or Chelsea defense.

You could just do Ronaldo > Vardy & Benrahma > Mbuemo & see how you fare this week

You could also Wildcard, but might be better holding for another week or two of information

If you are adverse to taking a hit or two then there’s enough changes to warrant a wild card there, I wouldn’t be holding Sarr if you pull the trigger either.

If you do want to save the WC then possibly Tierney & Ron > Vardy & Chilwell?

This is not wc for me,
GUAITA is perhaps the best 4.5 goalie, no need to do anything.
Defence is not great but needs not much because you got Livra and Tierney with both decent matches next week.
Midfield is a bit weak, but for next week ok. So my thinking here is a hit where you remove Ronaldo and get a City def for Tsimikas. Play 4-3-3 this week, Duffy on bench. Sarr away against Everton is not the worst option to play. You can perhaps also go Vardy if you fancy him but not sure if you can afford a City def for Tsimikas then?

Does Ronaldo (LIV) -> Vardy (bre), for a hit make sense?

    Sanchez ¦ Steele
    Rudiger Digne Azpilicueta
    Salah Raphinha Gray Gallagher Mbeumo
    Ronaldo Lukaku
    ¦ White Dier Dennis

Will have 2.3 ITB after this move.

"Armando is a striker who scored in the international break. I think it is time for him also to show he can play 90 minutes good"

      I don’t think so

At that price you can't really go wrong though if you're in like a strong 15 setup and need a super budget striker.

Same category as last week's Hwang.

He'll presumably score again and could be value but strong chance that there is better value in midfield at a similar price (ie 0.5 or less more). A slight Hwang sceptic but think he's the better option given he plays alongside Jimi. Good history for attacking combos there.

Who does Broja get to play off? Southampton look sterile.

Are these good moves over the next 3 GWs?

    GW11: Sarr --> Son

Planning transfers 3 weeks in advance will never, ever go to plan.

Injuries, suspensions, rotation all tend to scupper plans.

I'd WC if you still have. You can buy all of those in one go. And then get ahead of the curve. You'll always be playing catch-up with that plan. All are good to buy now.

If you don't have WC, then yes this looks a solid plan.

I do still have the WC, but just not sure I have quite enough to pull the trigger:

        0FT 1.3ITB

        Sanchez
        TAA / Rudiger / Christensen
        Salah / Foden / Raphinha / Benrahma / Sarr
        Ronaldo / Antonio

        4.0gk / White / Livramento / 4.5fwd

Mmm fair enough. It kinda depends on your opinion on West Ham assets. I think there's a decent argument to ditch all of them on WC now in which case I'd hit the button.

GW16 looks an ideal time to WC if you can hang onto it that long, some very nice runs of Fixtures:

    Arsenal: Southampton(h), West Ham(h), Leeds(a), Norwich(a), Wolves(h)

    Chelsea: Leeds(h), Everton(h), Wolves(a), Aston Villa(a), Brighton(h)

    Liverpool: Aston Villa(h), Newcastle(h), Tottenham(a), Leeds(h), Leicester(a)

    Man City: Wolves(h), Leeds(h), Newcastle(a), Leicester(h), Brentford(a)

    Man United: Norwich(a), Brentford(a), Brighton(h), Newcastle(a), Burnley(h)

12 is better. The earlier you use the WC the more you protect team value and the sooner you get ahead of the curve.

      It's also an international break.

City, Liverpool & Chelsea have decent fixtures between now & GW16 so you’d like to load up on them well before then.

The swing for United is a big one so hopefully they have kicked on a gear by then.

European club games finished by then too, possibly less rotation. But WC when you feel the need to do so. Might be wiser to avoid defenders with no attacking threat in games that look tricky for a result. But attackers can still score a few goals too in trickier looking fixtures. I wouldn't WC just because of fixtures unless players were in form or look promising.

Gw16 was my original plan to wildcard but injuries and too many players stinking out my team put an end to that plan and wilcarded last week.

The fixture swings do look nice for gw16 if you can hold out til then but it really does depend on the condition of your team

Trying to find a wildcard draft I like, that isn't just what everyone else did last week!
    What do you reckon?

    Mendy Foster
    TAA Cancelo Chilwell White Livra
    Salah Son Raph Mbuemo ESR
    Vardy Toney Broja

Cancelo, Chilwell, ESR, Broja are all rotation risks, maybe even Mendy.
    Plus, no Lukaku or Antonio

It's the perfect time to get off Sanchez. Mendy is the best of the premiums but I think I still prefer Ramsdale + 1.5m.

I like the team but it has too many bench headaches for me. I want at least one perma 3rd bencher like Brownhill or Davis. Would downgrade ESR or Broja and just store the funds. You never know when you'll need them.

      1. waltzingmatildas

Hmm, think I was just blown away by Mendy's performance.

          Fair move that

Also stuck on Lukaku. Not an iota of confidence in him and Chelsea defence has scored as many goals as their attack this season. Only saw highlights but looked fish out of water from what I saw.

May duck him here but with Vardy already in not sure where else I'd go apart from Spurs! Form over fixtures is quite normal for me but it seems iffy. 😉

The right thing to do is bench him and play Mbeumo vs Leicester instead right?

He had games during international break - my guess is he was just rested.
They wont spend that much on a forward and just throw him on the bench. Especially given the limited amount of opportunities he has been handed to actually grab some points (hard to score with no service...)

He will start on my bench too though, i need to see him start again to trust him.

Getting in DCL for GW8 was a facepalm move. Taking him out for a hit could be another facepalm so I am just going to wait for Benitez presser.

DCL would be a decent pick. I would just wait how he starts after this break. Jimenez is a better option now

    TAA / Cancelo / Chilwell
    Salah / Son / Foden / Raphinha / Mbeumo
    Vardy / Toney

    Foster / White / Livramento / 4.4fwd

KDB > Son for free this GW?

KDB on WC was always the placeholder for Son.

I’d have to do it anyway next gw to generate the cash for ESR > Raphina

    Team would be -

    Ramsdale
    TAA - Dias - James - Livramento
    Salah - Son - Foden - Raphinha
    Lukaku - Hwang

    Foster - Armstrong - Manquillo - Brownhill

Son's fixtures are not great. whu MUN eve. Might as well wait. KdB is a strong differential keep him.

The biggest thing you should avoid doing is getting rid of decent options to chase players you really want. Fix the problems in front of you.

Do we think Alonso is totally out of the picture now Chilwell is back? I got him in on a gw7 wildcard (should have gone azpi) and he hasn't played 1 bloody minute!! I feel like I need to get rid. I still fancy a chelsea defender but now sure which one. I'm thinking of Reece JAMES as I think if he is back fit he will likely not rotate too much.

    1. Konstaapeli
      • 7 Years

I think Alonso and Chilwell will share minutes. James should see more game time now.
