Meet the Manager: Tips and strategy from three-time top 1k FPL finisher

Joe (@FFScout_Joe) chats to Dave Perrins (@SimpleGull), who can boast of three top 1,000 finishes across his last nine seasons as a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) manager.

Dave’s stellar career also includes two further top 10k overall ranks, and he talks to Joe about his key strategies and tips for success.

But while he has an enviable track record in FPL, the bulk of their chat focuses on Dave’s mission to use the game to bring families together.

As the head of a training consultancy for new dads, Dave has created a Big and Smalls league for FPL managers and their children to take part in.

This includes some notable FPL families, including those of Mark Sutherns (@FFScout_Mark), Tim Hill (@FFScout_Anorak) and Richard Nykvist (@VionylRichie).

Can the grown-up, seasoned veterans learn about FPL management from their offspring? The current standings indicate they can, with Mark among many dads to be either lagging behind or matched by their children.

Not weighed down by painful memories of triple captaining Brighton centre-back Shane Duffy (£4.4m) or faced with an onslaught of Fantasy Football opinion on social media, the junior FPL managers are excelling this season in making simple, effective decisions to propel them up the rankings.

There’s a serious message to the league too, as it means parents can share their hobby with their children and involve them in the highs and lows of the game they love.

Dave’s strong record in FPL is not forgotten, though. Joe finds out how he has achieved so many high finishes and why his riskier mentality hasn’t always gone to plan over his career.

He also reveals his Gameweek 12 plans and why he is set on continuing with a ‘big at the back’ strategy, especially with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) covering the captaincy for the foreseeable future.

The Meet the Manager series is where Joe chats to FPL managers with a strong record of success, who have an interesting view of the game and who can provide a unique insight into Fantasy management.

    Fernandez

    Vardy, Antonio (Dennis)

Wilson is an interesting option. NOR and BUR coming up too.

My original plan was to do Havertz + Antonio --> Smith Rowe + Lukaku.

But Smith Rowe is playing Liverpool and Lukaku still a doubt. So, I thought it would be better to wait for one more GW.

Auba to Wilson is a gimme. Wilson's fixtures and form are good, and things are only set to get better for him under a new manager who loves using him. Auba's new role/style is not FPL-friendly at his price.

Frees up funds for an upgrade on Gray or Mbuemo. I'd probably do one of those two to Jota with a second transfer (or if you wanna save some cash for the rest of your team, Bowen or Trossard), and then over coming weeks, look to do stuff for roughly the same prices but to better players, like:

      Christensen - Reguilon
      Gilmour - McArthur
      Gray/Mbuemo - ESR
      Laporte - James

    The Case for Kane

I'm seeing lots of people who are apprehensive about getting on the Harry Kane train. But I think it's a fairly easy decision to pickup Kane this week if you have a fairly hit free way because of the following reasons:

+ He's a proven goalscorer. Kane is one of the PL's best and most consistent finishers over the last 5+ years. Can't really dispute this.

+ Great fixtures. The fixtures are amazing. Spurs are top of the ticker for next 6 and next 4 especially are outstanding.

+ Conte. He has a history of enabling world class forwards in his system. I think with extra time over the IB to work on tactics and get settled, he can make Kane return to form.

+ He plays 90 mins every game. Winter football means a lot of games. Kane is one of the most nailed on forwards who you can rely on to turn up rain or shine and is relatively good at avoiding injuries.

+ The lack of strong forwards makes him more attractive. Other than Antonio, there are few forwards who have impressed this year. That makes Kane a better asset because I'm sure most managers have a forward that is disappointing that they can replace him with. Son is also an attractive asset but he's up against a pool of midfielders who offer stronger value like Jota, Foden. This isn't the case with Kane.

+ Premium slot allows a straight swap to Ronaldo or a clean 2fer with fodder in midfield if you want Bruno, KdB or Mane. It was one of the reasons I ended up with Bruno in GW1 which turned out to be a good decision because I could do a fairly easy change to Ronaldo in GW4. Extra flexibility in price points is especially good with crowded gameweeks.

These pluses all add up and I think it outweighs the few minuses which are:

    - Kane has no form. Can't really dispute this, he hasn't shown much and recent stats don't really say he's a hot asset to go for either. I'm banking on the plus of Conte and the strong fixtures to rejuvenate him. It is a gamble but I think it's one worth taking.

    - Kane is poor value. He's expensive and a lot of teams can't get him in easily. If you're in like a 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 with no premium strikers than probably best to avoid him rather than tear your team up but if you have Vardy/Auba or some money spare, I think he's a good pickup. As good as any forward to go for at the moment anyway.

Can't argue with any of that.

I've been undecided on bringing Kane in and will leave it as late as possible to decide. Was hoping he'd show something against Everton to make the decision to bring him easier.

Another plus is that he's currently 7.5% owned and could prove to be an explosive differential if Conte can get him scoring again. He has the fixtures to do it

      1. FantasyClub
        • 3 Years
        2 years, 4 months ago

I’d rather bring Wilson in as a differential.
And the point about Kane having ample time to work on tactics with Conte, how’s that gonna happen with Kane on IB.
Son has actually proven himself this season and he has added points for clean sheet etc.

    3. Haa-lala-land

I see those bringing in Kane in as being in more hope than expectation. Contes impact of arrival could just as equally be on their defence, IE 1-0 and 0-0.
I just can't see Tottenham scoring more than two against even Norwich. I have Son now, and saved 6m ready to being in Kane, but I'm seriously thinking I'll get more points by not having either, and going for say Wilson/Jesus and Jota/Foden.
Sometimes we get tunnel vision, as we seem to have with Spurs fixtures, and this makes us ignore players like Bernardo Silva, Cornet, Gallagher, as well as Man City's fixture run now.
Price bias could also be affecting us wanting Son and Kane, combined with last season bias, as well as the solid reasons you mentioned.
It's a tough one, and will for sure be a crossroads in FPL managers seasons which decisions they choose!

If he gets a few double digit returns in his next 3 and is up against NOR in GW15, I don't see why not. Salah has Wolves away which you could bet against depending on his/Liverpool's form as well as Wolves'.

Salah has after all not scored in 3 games straight now in all competitions 😛

Those are big "ifs". If he starts to show some form and Son doesn't, it's easy to get room for him come gw15. With his current form and issues being not manager related, he is a big gamble now. He needs to get more points than Son and cover their price difference. Over two million money can make a big difference elsewhere if used wisely.

Come GW15 you could be 30 points behind on the people with Kane.

It depends on how you want to play. I prefer trying to pick the next big scorer like Reece James a game early because the fundamentals are in place rather than wait until the hauls have already happened.

I doubt that. Son could easily match Kane or do better and I have him and two million extra. If things change and Kane looks "essential" I can probably transfer him in next week with mini wc and -4. In that case Spurs are probably doing very well and I will get the pts lost back by having both him and Son during their nice fixtures. There is no such thing as cover, but since Kane and Son are able and knowb to pass to each other, I don't expect Kane to start hauling and Son doing nothing. So Kane is a wait and see in my situation. I would have to take -8 this week to get him and sacrifice Son (sideways, stupid idea) or both Antonio, Jesus and one more player. Salah is naturally going nowhere. Even brace from Kane might not be enough to cover that -8 if players I sell return.

              Anytime goalscorer odds:
              Kane 1.98
              Son 2.63

So Kane has below 50% chance to score and Son has below 40% Son as a mid however gets 1 extra point from goal and 1 pt from cs. If we forget baps and assist potential, this means that there is basically no difference with expected points with them. That 2 million has to be also worth something and transfer costs are team dependant. So if there is a case for Kane, there has to be a case for Son also. Very few can get both in easily in one week and it wouldn't be without risks either.

How many of those pluses add up with Son? Son is also cheaper and has shown some form. So he doesn't have either of those minuses. There are some pluses that Kane has and Son doesn't, but also vice versa. If I wanted Kane I would have to ditch Son (-4) and sacrifice Jesus. There is enough time to make downgrades elsewhere that allow downgrading Son when it is time to get CR7 in. It is only two transfers, and even if it has to be for -4, so be it. Kane is a very big gamble now based on hopes and history.

To me 2 million less invested in Spurs looks good and 5 mid spots so really not a problem. Planning on that Kane Ronaldo switch is kind of hopeless as both those teams are kak atm so why plan to get a player for a team that are shite form now. IF you have Son is really not much harder to get Ronaldo if you have to. All it takes is Jimenez who you can then upgrade by going cheap mid for Son.

Next 4 outstanding is debatable if you look at stats and forget reputations and league position.

Leeds were only bettered by Chelsea defence (and Brighton marginally) in the second half of last season. Conceded 6 in last 6 matches. Leicester (hot attack) never looked like scoring.

Burnley have conceded 5 at home all season and conceded 8 in last 6 including Chelsea and City

Brentford have conceded 5 in 5 away matches so far and that included Chelsea and West Ham.

Stats say Chelsea destroyed Burnley and were unlucky. Brentford defense recently also been poor.

I will admit that the Leeds defensive stats are surprisingly decent, but they still give away big chances from mistakes and I expect the forwards to get at least a few decent sights on goal.

I think you are overdoing the poor form thing. Spurs have been poor, agreed, and they are mainly a squad of journeymen players that Conte won't be able to wave a magic wand over and suddenly turn into a fluent attacking outfit. But Kane, himself, has been in decent enough goalscoring shape (and the notes below were written before his hat-trick tonight, by the way).

Kane has actually scored 7 goals (plus 2 assists) in 14 starts for Spurs this season. The opponents were Slovenians NS Mura (3), Vitesse (0+1), Paços de Ferreira (2), Newcastle (1+1), Wolves (1). He also scored in each of the September games for England (3 in 3) as well as 4 international goals in the summer (and now 3 tonight). His goalscoring form is therefore not at all dreadful, bad as he may look on the pitch sometimes, and the Spurs goals have been against weak opposition.

The question is whether the next 4 games for Spurs - LEE bur BRE NOR - are against weak enough opposition to make him worth selecting. Conte's track record is not conclusive but it suggests that the focus of his early work will be to achieve tactical and defensive cohesion. Maybe the smart pick initially could be Reguilón, who is already on record saying that Conte wants a more attacking game from him in the WB role.

The problem is that whatever you do with Spurs right now, you are taking a shot in the dark really. The combination of good, immediate fixtures and a top manager in place is tantalising but the squad isn't great. These reservations apply equally to Son. The one thing with Kane is that it is quite typical for him to look poor and then suddenly produce a flurry of goals.

Like you, Camzy, I will likely get Kane (can do so with a FT) and it's partly because I know I will probably want Ronaldo from around GW16. Kane ➡ Ronaldo will be an easy switch. But the decision point for me will be whether I will feel happy captaining Kane in GW12 and GW15. If not, I might as well go straight to Ronaldo and save a future transfer.

The problem is: I have watched all of the TOT games this season and Kane has been something of a non-event. I watched him v EVR last weekend and TOT couldn't even muster a single shot on goal. Kane was a nonentity. Underwhelming. Even with his new advanced positioning.

I am very reluctant to bring a player in with no form. I am equally put off by the new manager who will surely want to shore the D up first. Tradition dictates this.

Son is a different matter. 50-odd points in the bag despite fixtures. And then - importantly - is his price. He is the only asset I would consider.

I am not necessarily sold on the fixtures either. If you watched the LEE/LEI game, the returning Adam Forshaw made a big difference in the centre. I can see LEE improving and will not be the proverbial slaughtered lambs people make them out to be.

This is a great opportunity for anyone ‘chasing’ or going a bit maverick. Kane with those fixtures as a differential would’ve been unthinkable not long ago.

Deja Vu to the “Time for Traore?” hot topic lol

Wouldn’t touch Kane with a barge pole until there’s been one - even just one - red hot league performance from him, if not both him AND Spurs first - if he starts smashing in goals, or at least even vaguely looking like smashing in goals, then fair enough

Ivan Toney is half the price, has similarly good fixtures, has had 3 goals disallowed in his last 7 games, and at least 3-4 assists ruined by Mbuemo’s intrepid woodwork escapades & near misses…and is STILL 10 points clear of Kane

Yet is pretty much public enemy #1 on here after the Norwich game

That’s the depth of vitriol & venom that awaits Kane if he manages to sustain current league form (10 blanks in 11 appearances!) through the next couple of fixtures

*Actually his league form is even worse - 12 blanks, 3 goals & 2 assists in his last 15 league fixtures going right the way back to the end of last season

For 12.0 I’d rather be a game or two late than a game or two (or three, or ten!) early thanks

Albania are currently sitting at 63 in the world rankings

An unopened can of baked beans could probably have a good go at scoring a hattrick against them

But personally I’m not paying 12.0 for a can of baked beans until it has done it at least once in the league first

Harder to react if one jumps early & he keeps looking like someone has cut Wersel gummage’s hair & plopped him into a Spurs shirt

I preface it by saying it's a gamble against his poor form due to the other factors.

We all take some risks and tbh, one of the big factors for me is the lack of strong forwards to pick from. Plenty of good mids but upfront I would rather have Kane than anyone else for the next 4 games.

I think it is about Kane. In his sulk, he never put himself in dangerous positions. Looks to me like both Kane and Southgate took Conte's hint and kept Kane high.
Like I said, I'm not diving in and getting him ahead of GW12. But it would not surprise me if Conte is the catalyst for Kane coming out of his funk and finding his old form. I'm now open to getting him sooner rather than not at all.

Think Kane's problem wasn't with Nuno but is with Levy and the club and a perceived breaking of promises re: transfer.
Maybe Conte can lift him out of this.
Whilst other strikers aren't shining Kane can still offer "value" if he starts returning due to his low ownership.

This 'a certain player is only worth getting if you captain him' line is one of the many fallacies prevalent on this site.

So what, if your other captain (Salah?) scores 20 and Kane scores 15, that's bad and he wasn't worth having?

Some rank bad logic on here, discretion advised

I agree that it isn't the be and end all reason not to get an expensive player, but most people who legitimately use the "too expensive if you don't captain" line are talking about the points to value ratio. So if you aren't going to captain, spread the money to two more likely players who can keep up or better the one expensive player.

I don't think you've made a particularly strong case for Kane there Camzy.

      1. Just going through your points, Kane is a proven goals scorer ... so is Vardy.

      2. The fixtures are amazing for the next 6. Are they actually THAT much better than Vardy's?
      Kane = LEE (H), BUR (A), BRE (H), NOR (H), BHA (A)
      Vardy = CHE (H), WAT (H), SOU (A), AVL (A), NEW (H)
and then they both play each other at Leicester in the 6th match. I'd argue that Vardy's fixtures from 2-5 are easily as good as Kane's from 1-4, with the one difference being CHE (H) v BRI (A). Over the entire 6 not really that much in at all.

      3. There's no guarantee that the Conte effect will be instant for the forwards and it will HAVE to be, for your argument to work.

      4. Vardy has played more minutes than Kane this season.

      5. "Other than Antonio, there are few fowards who have impressed this year." Vardy currently has one less point than Antonio.

If you have Vardy at the moment then I can see very little reason to switch to Kane right now. Yes Vardy has blanked in the last three but he has scored 5 in the last 7, whilst Kane has scored 1 in 11. Ditching Vardy for Kane is one ginormous leap of faith and really nothing more.

And iff you don't currently have Vardy, then I can't really see a stand out reason to get Kane instead of him and it might be better to hold on to your money and see what happens in the next GW or two, or, if it's burning a hole in your pocket, invest it elsewhere.

Of course Kane could be about to absolutely go off and fair play to those managers who did make that leap of faith if he does do but really, that's what will have been ... a massive g-a-m-b-l-e that has paid off.

The point about the lack of forwards is genuinely mind-bending:

"Kane is a better asset because there are so many disappointing forwards this year, and Kane has been doing worse than any of them"

How come? There are lots of good d options. Lots of good mid options. Hardly any striker options. Put those together and Kane is an option. Doesn’t mean he has form. Doesn’t mean he will work. Doesn’t mean you should get him. But with his fixtures, his history and a new manager … I can absolutely see why he is being considered. Doesn’t mean I prefer him over Son. I just prefer my current mids over my current non-performing strikers. And if he continues to suck, I will move along. Cheers.

The fact that there are lots of disappointing forwards means that you're gambling on losing an underperformer like Vardy, Auba vs losing a player like Foden or Salah if you want Son.

It's not really that hard to understand. When you make transfers you also have to get rid of a player. It's easier to gamble on forward slots than mids. That's really it.

I even said it was a gamble due to Kane's poor form, but I think it's worth it and I shared why. If you don't agree with the points then don't get him, it's that simple.

I totally do agree with this. Had I Vardy and money itb, taking a punt on Kane would be easy. And should it fail, he would still be a place holder for CR7. So it depends totally on the team.

Can afford some dollars on bench as first WC is intact..

What do you think of the below if I wanted this line up for GW12 it would mean a -8 or I can spread the transfers out for the following GW's. 0.1 ITB - Problem I see is I won't be able to easily upgrade forward spot to for example Jesus without downgrading midfield.

Is Jota a must whilst Firminio is out?

    Sanchez

    Cancelo | TAA | Chilwell

    Son | Jota | Gallagher | Salah | Foden

    Jiminez | Antonio

    Foster | White | Livramento | Davis

Current team is below, I don't want to use a -8 but that is what is needed to get the above team.

        Sanchez | Foster

        Cancelo | TAA | Chilwell | White | Livramento

        Raph | Salah | Foden | Mbeumo | Luiz

        Jiminez | Vardy | Antonio

Coin flip imo. I currently have 1 and the only thing I would point out is Armstrongs' fixtures turn in a few gws there aren't many options at that price. So either bench or sell in the tougher games (assuming he keeps his place)

If you aren't going to WC this week, when do you plan to use it? You can definitely set up a team from this week that can easily pivot in GW16.

Also how did you get two Salah's and how can I do the same?

In GW16 or 17, Spurs/Leeds/Wolves/Leicester fixtures get worse, and Man Utd/West Ham/Chelsea/Watford fixtures improve. I can imagine people selling players like Son, Kane, Raphinha, Jimenez, Vardy to Ronaldo, Antonio, Chilwell, Lukaku Sarr at that stage

Been narrowing down my options over the international break and I'm down to two.

    (A) Mount + James to Son + Reguilón
    (B) Mount + Mbeumo + Vardy to Son + Jota + Wilson (–4)

I know most people are keeping faith with Chelsea defenders as the fixtures turn but I have a sense that Reguilón should be competitive with James/Chilwell in the next few weeks

    2FT, 2.0ITB
    Sánchez // Foster
Trent Cancelo James // Livra Veltman
Salah Mount Raph Mbeumo // Brownhill
    Vardy Antonio Toney

As it’s usually slow during IB this might gain some traction or answers I seek.

Has anyone ever compiled data of all previous FPL winners like where they were ranked at certain GWs in there victorious season.

It would also be great to see stats in a comparable view for those ‘lucky’ winners pre chips and post chips.

Like has anyone ever been hovering around 300k+ mid season then gone on a ridiculous run to victory? Or is it a case of starting strong, then sustaining.

    Thoughts would be appreciated.

Good questions, but I haven't been playing the game long enough. Imo they have at least decent starts and been not too much behind at this point. Last season having Kane and Son when they hauled big time was season defining moment imo. I am no absolutely certain, but there were so many teams that got far ahead and catching them all was just impossible.

On WC are these changes good moves?
    Sanchez - Ramsdale
    Havertz-Jota
    Foden-Smith Rowe
    Vardy-Ronaldo
    Antonio-Wilson
    Steele-Foster

Yes, Yes, Maybe, Maybe, No, Yes.

I think Vardy to Ronaldo is a bit of a risk right now. Vardy has Watford, So'ton, Villa and Newcastle in the next 5 and United are still in rotten form. I'd wait until GW16-17 for Ronaldo.

If you sell Antonio now, you might struggle to get him back in GW16-18.

    Sanchez
    TAA Cancelo James Livramento
    Salah Foden Jota
    Vardy Antonio Toney

    (Gunn Saka Semedo Sissoko)
    1 FT & 0.0m

    Saka & Vardy ➡️ Kane & Brownhill for -4?

Will do Semedo to Regulion/Royal in GW13 and play 4 at the back.
Kane opens the door for CR7 in GW16 as well.
