Following the postponement of Brentford v Manchester United, Gameweek 17 now gets underway with Norwich City v Aston Villa at 19.45 GMT, followed by Manchester City v Leeds United 15 minutes later.

Gianni and Seb will be following the action in the embedded video below and over on our YouTube channel.

At Carrow Road, Dean Smith makes four changes from Gameweek 16, with Ben Gibson, Brandon Williams, Jacob Sorensen and Todd Cantwell coming in for Grant Hanley, Dimitris Giannoulis, Lukas Rupp and Josh Sargent.

Steven Gerrard, meanwhile, makes just the one change, with Emiliano Buendia replacing the injured Marvelous Nakamba, who may miss the rest of the 2021/22 season after suffering a knee injury against Liverpool at the weekend.

As a result, Ollie Watkins leads the line once again, with Danny Ings having to settle for a place on the bench.

Notably, Jed Steer, Morgan Sanson, Anwar El Ghazi and Keinan Davis are all absent from the matchday squad, with Gerrard revealing in his pre-match press conference that two first-team players had tested positive for Covid-19.

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola makes four changes, as John Stones comes in at full-back for the suspended Joao Cancelo, while further forward, Kevin De Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden are in for Ilkay Gundogan, Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus, all of whom drop to the bench.

Kyle Walker surprisingly misses out, with reports suggesting he is short of full fitness.

For Leeds, they name an unchanged XI, as Liam Cooper, Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford remain out.

Anyone else who had Ronaldo and have sold him and have massive
Funds in the bank think with Xmas rotation and COVID cases that it could be an idea to spend those funds on assembling a strong squad??! For example I’ve just done ESR and Broja to Foden and Watkins which leaves me 0.1 in the kitty, but not have a full squad of decent players that can score points rather than have deadwood on the bench that score 1 and 2 points

I still have Broja but looking to upgrade Livra.

Broja scores well when he starts

      Foden Silva Salah Jota Gallagher

Yeah it certainly could mate and I’m sure they will, every week the dynamic seems to change so got to remain flexible, I need to try and stick to something rather than keep changing my mind, easier said than done tho!!

I'm getting Ronaldo back, for Benteke, GW18 or 19. Jota to Bowen will happen in GW18, regardless

      DDG
      TAA Cancelo James Alonso
      Salah Jota Gallagher Foden Bilva
      Dennis

      Guaita Benteke Livra Gelhardt

I'm still going for max points from the 11 or 9 players I'll field every GW, covering most captaincy options... Just like my strategy for BGWs from Cup-based postponements: quality over quantity

Anyone else nostalgic about all those near misses Watkins had last year when we owned him. Kept on narrowly missing 7 point goals. Still can’t believe he tapped in tonight without being a toenail offside or hitting the post.

Please don't remind me. I owned him for his good run of fixtures from Oct - Xmas last season and this definitely was one of my most frustrating FPL experiences ever.

Absolutely delighted with my new transfer Foden this week... but atm I'm strongly considering getting Sterling for him next week! Just think he'll likely not play and Sterling almost surely will... against Newcastle.

    Ramsdale
    TAA Cancelo Alonso
    Salah Jota Foden Bowen
    Antonio Watkins King

Foster Mbeumo Livramento Williams, 1 FT, 3.9 ITB.

It's not from being Pep. It's from observation

Mahrez plays at RW, where Foden and Grealish don't play

Foden and Grealish generally play together, not instead of each other

Foden's preferred at ST, Grealish is preferred at RW

Sterling can play across the three spots atm, and then Jesus threatens RW and ST

Except if you mean you expect both Jesus and Sterling to start, but you summarised it into one sentence. If that's the case, then yeah... But Foden's first choice this season so far, when fit. Like Bernardo

Man Utd to reopen training ground
According to the Mirror, the training ground reopens tomorrow, but they might still request the Brighton match is postponed as a precaution.

I dont see it being postponed. The Brentford game was cancelled to prevent spread and lack of training. I dont even see reliable reporting of any playing staff cases in the first team for United. If they're back to training, and the first team squad is largely fit and negative for covid, dont see why they would postpone another game.

Also Daily Star is not exactly a reputable source lol

      1. Westfield Irons ⭐️
        • 15 Years

Agree. Most sources seem to imply it was a mix of players and staff with COVID, not exactly sweeping through the whole squad, seems the training ground closed as a precaution and I'd guess most of the first team squad OK, so Brighton match should go ahead...?

    Ramsdale. (4.0m)
    Alexander-Arnold | Cancelo | Rudiger | Lamptey | Livramento
    Salah | Jota | Bernardo | Bowen | Gallagher
    Dennis | Antonio | Vardy
    2FT, 0.0itb

Transfers have to wait till Saturday of course. But here's some early thoughts:

    1) Vardy / Antonio -> Pukki (leaves me cash for Ronaldo after the covid fiasco)
    2) Vardy / Antonio -> Watkins (Villa still have nice fixtures, cash for upgrading Jota to city mid next week)

Holding him since GW6. Yes, I have given up on him. Not because of his lack of points, but because of his lack of underlying numbers. For example, he had only 1 shot on target over the last six matches and that is dreadful by any standard or opponents. Most other forwards have better stats than him.

Still I like that he is the nailed on striker on the 4th best team in the Prem. I would argue they arre the 4th best offence also.

    1. banskt
      • 12 Years
      4 years, 13 days ago

That's a very difficult decision. Few things to consider here: Mids generally have higher ceiling in any given match if they are playing. Dias, however, has more secured game time than the mids and therefore a more secure route for scoring every week. Note that having 3 players from a single team exposes you to covid scares, that is, if a City game is cancelled you have to scramble to put together a team for that week.

    2. Ze_Austin
      • 7 Years

        Cancelo-taa-james-dias-(dier)
        Salah-bilva-gallagher-jota-(ESR)
        Ronaldo-dennis-(king)

Would probably be Dias to 4.5 or less and EsR to foden

Good team. Don't do anything for a hit.
But maybe start to reduce money on the bench, ready for an aggressive move another time. All of those players in brackets could be downgraded for a differential sub and probably give you 0.5 min to use when you're ready

Could be a good idea. I like the Livra/White rotation though, so I'd be upgrading Gilmour.

Any chance for Gelhardt to secure a starting spot in the near future?

Even if he does, he plays for an out of form team.
If you need a cheap starter/bench option, Jacob Ramsey's yer man! Excellent goal today, robbed of a goal last week. 90 mins. 4.5 MID OOP.

I am always on lookout for value players. Those who can come off the bench and score more than 2 points. Two of them, Gallagher and Dennis, has become part of the main squad, so looking for bench options again.

No idea, but Bielsa loves his favourites

Bamford is stuck at ST when fit, so Gelhardt will be second fiddle, or play at CAM like Rodrigo had to

if he was 26 and had the exact same ability he would be starting. that's my opinion.

Looking to downgrade Reguilion to generate some funds. Best options:

    Tierney (already have Ramsdale)
    Targett
    Lamptey
    Dalot

Also have Cancelo James TAA and Livra.

    Ta!

Dalot if the game is on (I like Tierney but you have ramsdale)

If you need funds maybe Duffy 4.1 back from suspension and decent fixtures in 17 and 19 if you need him to play.

Doesn’t generate a lot but I’d seriously consider Mings. Villa look good, decent fixtures and has a tendency to get BAPS too.

Would prefer Targett to Mings. Cheaper and more chance of attacking returns.

Ait Nouri is a good shout actually.

Fair enough but Mings has scored almost 20 points more than Targett so far!

Don’t really like Ait Nouri’s fixtures short term.

True but tbh it'll be someone benched most of the time.

My midfield is Mount Bsilva Salah Jota and Maddison and I have Antonio, King, & Watkins up-front so doubt I will ever really play 4 at the back!

Don't think Laca is guaranteed to start, depends if he's given the captaincy. Arteta could easily try Martinelli or Nketiah in the lone striker role flanked by ESR/Saka.

Agreed but the club want to keep him and a new offer is on the table for him. It's an opportunity for the club to see what he's really got. With Auba & Laca unlikely to stay...expect the youngsters to be given more minutes.

that's a little bit harsh, he's still only young, and he was a prolific goalscorer at youth level, maybe he will be a late bloomer like Ian Wright, who he actually reminds me a bit of in his playing style (without the goals yet of course)

Holy moly Silva trolling his owners! Just saw the scores after a long workday.

Also, fellow new Watkins owners: high five! Finally a welcome sight to see a new striker with a real number under his name.

For my fellow strugglers with an average/poor rank, hang in there!

With Foden/Watkins...and no hit taken this week I am up 200k rank so far or 30%.

Obviously could turn the other way if the likes of Mount/Connor haul again but just shows the fine margins for making up some ground 🙂
