Learning from ‘The Great and The Good’ FPL managers ahead of Gameweek 19

Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead continues with his series of articles analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this year are the Scouts Joe LepperNeale RiggGeoff Dance and Tom Freeman, FPL Wire’s Zophar, from the Hall of Fame Fabio BorgesFPLMatthewYavuz Kabuk and Tom Stephenson, Blackbox’s Az and Mark Sutherns, FPL “celebrities” LTFPL AndyMagnus Carlsen and FPL General plus last year’s mini-league winner Les Caldwell.

“There may be trouble ahead, but while there’s moonlight and music and love and romance. Let’s face the music and dance”

Such fun! Careful Fred and Ginger-like footwork was needed to tap dance your way around the latest wave of COVID cancellations – as well as a large dollop of luck.

Games being postponed with just hours to spare meant FPL managers were left to speculate rather than plan their moves, along with desperately searching for any credible ‘in the know’ insight. Unfortunately, there was also plenty of un-credible insight as well.

In between all the madness and frustration, there were still the moments of FPL magic to keep us coming back for more. Whether that be the wonder of the instant returns from Phil Foden (£8.1m) and Ollie Watkins (£7.9m) in Gameweek 17, the differential talents of Gabriel Martinelli (£5.3m) or even the rewards from those fortunate enough to captain Joao Cancelo (£6.8m) in Gameweek 18.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

An unusual couple of weeks, with many of ‘The Great and The Good’ struggling to put a full team out. Mark only managed nine in Gameweek 17, whilst poor old Tom Freeman could only muster seven this weekend just gone when Pep did Pep-like things by resting Foden.

Despite the chaos, there were still plenty of green arrows to go around, with Az remaining top of the tree – due in no small part to his move for Martinelli, something which will he no doubt dine out on for many seasons to come.

Like the Premier League, there does appear to be a gap opening between the top three and the chasing pack. FPL General is less than 10 points behind in third, whilst Tom Stephenson kept the pressure on in Gameweek 17 with the top score of 77.

Magnus Carlsen finally injected some life into the captaincy debate in Gameweek 18 as he went with Raheem Sterling (£10.6m) and his courage was rewarded with the highest tally of 75, as even his Joe Gelhardt (£4.6m) transfer paid off.

Busier than Santa on Christmas Eve, ‘The Great and The Good’ have had to move quickly and often in the transfer market with 16 hits taken in the last two Gameweeks alone.

The moves for Watkins and Foden were the most popular in Gameweek 17, with Yavuz Kabuk and Tom Stephenson timing that to perfection with immediate double-digit returns from both.

Tom Freeman’s move for Vladimir Coufal (£4.7m) was less fortunate and I suspect he won’t be sending the Czech a seasonal card this year as he managed to get himself sent off on his debut for the differential king.

The normally cautious Fabio Borges has taken hits in three consecutive weeks but his moves for Raphinha (£6.6m) and Bukayo Saka (£6.3m) provided instant rewards in Gameweek 18.

In other shocking news, conservative Joe took a minus eight this weekend, joining Geoff Dance and Yavuz in an attempt to have eleven at least take the field but perhaps the most surprising sight was Aaron Ramsdale (£5.1m) finally join the ranks of Sutherns Comfort.

TEMPLATE

FPL Gameweek 17 round-up: Thursday review, injury news and the things we learned

The template for ‘The Great and The Good’ is as follows with number in brackets showing how many teams in which they appear:

Foster (8), Ramsdale (8)

Alexander-Arnold (15), Cancelo (15), James (13), Livramento (11), Alonso (6)

Salah (15), Jota (14), Foden (11), Bowen (6), Gallagher (6)

King (10), Lacazette (10), Antonio (8)

Some unlikely faces in the overhauled template with Alexandre Lacazette (£8.4m) joining the fray this week, replacing Watkins who became surplus to requirements after his game was called off with only hours to go and probably whilst Villa fans were tucking into their pikelets on their way up to Burnley.

Additionally, Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) has been ditched due to the fixture chaos and Raphinha fails to make the cut for the first time this season despite playing games and scoring points. Foden joins too, although he may lose his place if Pep Guardiola sees him as a very naughty boy.

TRANSFER SUCCESS

In these uncertain times, immediate returns from your transfers are even more important than usual so I thought it would be worthwhile to look at the transfer stats of ‘The Great and The Good’:

Obviously, the number of hits has increased dramatically over the last few weeks, with managers trying to adapt to the fixture list carnage. These managers averaged 2.6 hits between Gameweek 1-16 compared to an average of eight in the last two weeks.

Yavuz has taken the most hits over the season – successful ones at that – as he climbs towards his lofty goal of securing his eighth successive top 10k finish, whilst Zophar and Az have been the most cautious.

With the season developing into a more instinctive phase, these conditions would seem to favour those who can pick out those moves that give an instant impact.

Looking at the data, this would appear to give the advantage to Magnus and LTFPL Andy, who have both gained over 100 points from their transfers so far. Could the ‘Chess Grandmaster’ and the ‘YouTube Galactico’ be the ones to challenge Az at the top?

CONCLUSION

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 18?

Who knows what awaits us over the FPL horizon? With matches vanishing without any sensible notice, now is the time for short-term tactical actions rather than longer term strategies, well until at least we get a bit more certainty.

As for the game itself, no doubt, it will impact our enjoyment unless you take sadistic pleasure in desperately scanning club forums or Twitter for team news minutes before deadline, so it’s probably best to just accept it for what it is.

However, most importantly, stay safe, try to keep positive and enjoy the time with your friends and family.

Anyway, that’s all from me for now, thanks for reading along for another year, have a fantastic Xmas and remember – don’t have FPL nightmares.

For those affected by any of the topics raised in the above article then you can find me here on Twitter.

Just done a quick first draft.....is this the kind of squad people would look to aim at?

    Ddg sanchez
    Taa cancelo reguillon Lowton livra

      Honestly? No.

Why double Burnley when they are 18th on ticker from GW21? There's better budget defenders out there than Livramento now. Also, Rashford but no City mid?

I'll get rid of Che assets in the next few GWs, They play Liv and Mci and then they have two blanks with the Club World Cup as well. Liv and Mci don't have double GWs, so no changes on current strategy. Spurs have 3 games to be rescheduled, so might bring in Son/Reguilion/maybe even Kane and Salah goes during the Afcon (I only lose 0.3). Eve have best fixtures during Afcon, but I currently can't see getting more than DCL if he's fit again

My general plan is to consider how many DGWs a player has in the bank when bringing them in.

As far as the actual detail is concerned until it’s announced for 22 not sure how you plan for it. Crelin’s crayons will probably end up being wrong and I can’t bear to look at that garish spreadsheet of his, it almost gave me a seizure.

Looking to shift Mount to Son this week maybe. Alonso - Ait Nouri (if fit) GW21. Will keep James through blanks.
Salah - KDB for AFCON then will reasses City mids when Salah's back. Cancelo stays obv

So many of the appealing DGW players have appalling runs after the DGWs. This looks to merit a free hit or a balanced approach. Going too big on this could leave you with dog dirt all over your hands for months

I'm going Ronaldo, Son, Reguilon, De Gea. And maybe Maddison. Keeping Jota, TAA, Cancelo, Martinelli, Foden, James. Then Maddison reverts back to Salah and James is removed in GW24.

I don't recognise "premium assets". I just pick the squad I think will do well and can afford. Theoretically that could mean I have 10m in the bank.
Specifically, I'm looking at Salah/Dennis > Son/Origi if the latter is fit for AFCON, and lose my Chelsea defence for CWC. I'd bring Salah back when he returns but the others I'd keep an open mind about. Son could be my most expensive asset.
I'm looking at clubs with games in hand in case DGWs are announced for the near future, but nothing certain until official plans are firmed up.

Scotland are considering cancelling all sporting fixtures over the festive period over concerns centred on fans travelling to and from matches and close contact with other people in queues and toilets.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-59739797

It would make more sense to me if they took the Welsh stance of sport still taking place but behind closed doors. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the English took this stance as well. Everybody is going to mix with family over Christmas, then sit (or stand) next to a different set of people at sporting events etc on the following days, which is obviously likely to spread the virus.

I don't understand why PL hasn't made a decision to play behind closed doors as well. Yes I football isn't the same without the crowd, but peoples health and wellbeing is much more important.

I don’t see the point in closing grounds whilst you can still go down a crowded pub, sit in a packed restaurant etc

Hopefully but the fact that Sadiq Khan has called a major incident in London over the stress on the NHS caused by Covid is not a good sign. Omicron being less severe than previous variants is also a possibility, I'm not suggesting a full lockdown just some sensible measures now when the jury is still out, that would hopefully prevent us from going into full lockdown in the future. That's what I fear about doing nothing now.

You are still extremely unlikely to catch Covid outdoors. It's doubtful whether closed stadiums would help in any significant way, no?

I don't think anybody really knows how you catch it, they just cover as many bases as possible with masks, social distance, hand washing, meet outside etc, but the latter probably does help significantly. Mask in stadiums is also an option especially as singing is believed to spread this virus.

We don't know that. Thinks are moving to quickly to be able to establish the transmissibility of COVID variants between people at mass outdoor sporting events. Which in itself should probably be reason to stop attendence over this period

Just some inspiration for anyone feeling down about how the season is going. This time last year after gwk18 I was ranked 303k. Ended up finishing 496th. Yes there's been some luck so far with cancellations, but there's loads of potential double and maybe even triple gameweeks on the horizon which screams opportunity to me.

You are right in terms of being skillful through DGW's and TGW's but some have been hurt by postponements and some have not. Many who have not and apply the same skills are definitely the winners.

Don't think there's any magic formula sadly. From memory the biggest rank jumps came from careful risks taken on captaincy, KdB did well for me in that regard, like this week some folks went TAA and were rewarded, perhaps that was a gamble too far for my liking but Salah's returns have definitely been a little less explosive lately so there was perhaps some evidence to support it. Also identifying some of the runs that a few players tend to go on each year. Wont always catch them on a hot run, but if you can catch a few like Lingard last year then that will help no end. Don't be too stubborn if you think you've missed it, often you haven't.

It certainly wasn't the TC which was a dismal failure on Kane. And I missed some of the Kane/Son fest early on. Both evidence that not everything has to go your way to do well (sometimes its a challenge to see how well you can recover even if dealt a poor hand), and that isn't just the experience from last season either, but many seasons of playing the game. All still to play for at this stage!

Introspection imo should focus less on whether seasons can be rescued (which in itself can be simply the result of you being very lucky where others suffer misfortune) and more on the devaluing of the game in the current context. Put less time into it, consider it to have less value and be less worthy of your time. I know many managers will see this as a challenge because they enjoy solving puzzles, but it's a waste of time and energy relative to other pursuits.

Amazing how quickly the wind can change. All of a sudden there is a mad scramble to jump on Spurs. Kane red card and Jota penalty and we'd probably be looking at a 4-1 loss and no mention of Spurs players on here.

It's the possible great doubles in both GW21 and 22 that's swaying people with City and Pool having only single gameweeks, Salah leaving for Afcon, City mids coming back increasing rotation, and Chelsea missing a few gameweeks.

      1. Eze Really?

We have to go with what we know atm. Spurs obviously are assets you could be on, like any top half of the table DGW's. Having said that, the likes of TAA, Cancelo are good for 38 GW's and moving off them for a chance of extra games is not the right way to go about it.

        1. Zimo
          • 5 Years

Who's moving off TAA, Cancelo? I specifically mentioned City mids and Salah who can be replaced by the likes of Son and Ronaldo for their doubles. Reguilon for one of the Chelsea Defenders and De Gea for Ramsdale. That's what I'm doing.

Nothing at the moment. If GW21 and/or GW22 are DGWs then I'm currently thinking of bringing in CR7 or Kane using the Salah MITB when he's away at the Africa Cup of Nations, then TC one of them. I'd save FH for GW30, and would then WC before BB on the big DGW we always get near the end of the season.

A nice question but I cannot help to think it is pointless atm. With the top 3 not missing a game and the majority should be in your team, then the decision is about dropping top points earners for a lesser player playing 2 games MAYBE. Yeah, go for Son/Ron because they would be a good pick anyway. Move out Chelsea players due to the club world cup. But don't mess your side up for a quick fix.

This is true, I think the top players we might drop would mainly be Chelsea or City assets due to the fact that both of those teams are playing tough opposistion in those weeks. With City and Chelsea playing each other in 22.

I’ve no idea what I’ll be doing yet, but I’m feeling flush as I still have my first wildcard intact. It’s still an insurance policy against fixture chaos ahead of Boxing Day, after which I’ll have 48 hrs to play with it ahead of GW20. I should get an edge in managing the GW19/20 rotation risks, and maybe have a chance to set the squad up for potential DGW opportunities.

If 22 is a BDGWK as Crellin predicts will be forced to freehit. Currently have 3 Liverpool, City and Arsenal. Who are playing BRE, CHE and tot respectively. Probably use the second wildcard in GW23/24 to bring back Salah.

My January to May League (league code fy0acw) will start scoring in GW21, which is also the first Gameweek that the second wildcard becomes available.
The likely imminent DGWs should make it a really exciting start to the second half of the season, and it might be interesting to look back later at which chip strategies will have proved to be most effective!
