Which FPL players are away at AFCON and how many Gameweeks will they miss?

The delayed 2021 Africa Cup of Nations begins in January and, after much speculation, we finally know which Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players will be representing their countries in Cameroon and how many Gameweeks they will miss as a minimum.

WHEN WILL PREMIER LEAGUE PLAYERS LEAVE FOR AFCON?

Previously there had been some concern about FPL assets leaving as early as Gameweek 19 or 20 to attend pre-competition training camps but it has now been confirmed that players from the English top flight will be allowed to represent their clubs in the initial round of Gameweek 21 matches (i.e. not the ‘doubles’) before departing for AFCON.

WHEN DOES AFCON 2021 TAKE PLACE?

The tournament proper runs from Sunday 9 January to Sunday 6 February and will be staged in Cameroon.

With 16 nations progressing from the 24-team group stage, the chances of getting some of the big FPL names back early aren’t great; the likes of Egypt, Ghana, Senegal, Ivory Coast and Algeria are among the tournament favourites and will expect to go deep into the knockout rounds.

HOW MANY GAMEWEEKS WILL FPL PLAYERS MISS DUE TO THEIR INVOLEMENT AT AFCON?

Thanks to a combination of the FA Cup and a wider January international break, only two Gameweeks are affected while AFCON is on: Gameweeks 22 and 23.

Anyone involved in the final or third-place play-off on Sunday 6 February could be doubtful for Gameweek 24, however, which takes place on February 8-10.

PREMIER LEAGUE PLAYERS AND TEAMS AFFECTED BY AFCON 2021

Up to 30 players from 16 clubs could be representing their respective nations at AFCON in January.

Arsenal, Leicester City and Watford look set to be the worst hit, with four players on international duty.

Leeds United, Newcastle United, Norwich City and Tottenham Hotspur are the four teams that won’t be affected by the tournament in Cameroon.

There are some big names in the below list, the most notable of which is Mohamed Salah (£12.8m).

The 64%-owned leading points-scorer in FPL is one of three Liverpool players who are set to be missing in January and possibly the beginning of February, with Sadio Mane (£11.8m) and Naby Keita (£5.0m) poised to turn out for Senegal and Guinea respectively.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£9.6m), Maxwel Cornet (£5.9m), Edouard Mendy (£6.2m), Riyad Mahrez (£8.7m), and Said Benrahma (£5.9m) are also stand-out names in the table we’ve put together below:

Why are my red arrows always *so much* bigger than my green ones?

I’ve had 9 greens in 11 GW’s clawing me from 600k to almost inside the top 200k - grinding out tiny green arrows to keep the momentum going…
Then one bad week and 6 weeks of grinding is lost in one foul swoop 🙁

Ramsdale’s untimely blank this week brings forward a reality we were facing anyway which is the double blank in 25 and 27.

Question is whether to swap Ramsdale or upgrade your fodder keeper into someone who complements Ramsdale’s uneven future. Someone with decent fixtures 20 and 21 (ramsdale has City), who likely doubles in 22 and plays 25 and 27.

DDG or Lloris coming in for Foster is what I’m looking at

    TAA, Cancelo, James, Alonso
    Salah, Jota, Foden, Gilmour
    Antonio, Dennis

    Ramsdale; Lacazette, Saka, Cash.

Reckon I can eek out a save with this bunch or probably need to make a transfer due to rotation and possible postponements? Lacazette out looks like the best move but no idea who to go for.

If the only route to Salah is hitting out Son, who is probably the best captaincy option next week and who you will probably want back, you are effectively betting that Salah outscores Son by 8 points this gameweek to make the transfer worth it

The case for the second playing GK

As a Ramsdale - Foster owner like most people, I've been considering upgrading my second GK or replacing Ramsdale this week.

Option A - Save FT and persist with Ramsdale
    + Most budget friendly
+ Saves FTs for other positions
    + No rotation concerns
+ Foster might be back in time to cover for GW25/27
    - 3 blank GWs scheduled
    - No GK this week
    - Poor next few fixtures when other teams have more and better fixtures.

    Option B - DDG
    + Great fixtures to cover Ramsdale's blanks in 20, 25, 27
+ Strong DGW potential in 21/22
+ MUN look a strong defense to invest in
    + Could setup a BB in 22
    - Costs FT this week on GK when it could be more effective elsewhere
    - Could blank next week because of WOL (might have 0,1,2 fixtures)
    - 1.1m extra spent on GK

    Option C - Sanchez
    + Covers Ramsdale's blanks in 20, 25, 27.
+ Has extra DGWs in the pipeline from Chelsea's CWC postponement on GW24
    + Cheaper than DDG
+ In theory helps with goalie rotation because you'd play Ramsdale over him most weeks unless he blanks
    - Chelsea fixture this week ain't great
    - Costs FT this week on GK when it could be more effective elsewhere
    - Won't double in GW21

Those are the only options I'm thinking about really. Selling Ramsdale for DDG is also a choice but not one I want to make considering the value saved on Ramsdale and his general good form.

It's also bad because of GW21 where DDG might blank and also because Ramsdale's two blanks in 25 and 27 present opportunities for doubles later down the line to be taken advantage of as well as leaving the door open to BB in 22.

The other choice touted is Lloris who I also don't like as much as the above options because he's more expensive than DDG, he also takes up a Spurs slot which I feel will possibly be more coveted over the next few weeks. A triple up with Reguilon, Son, Moura is much more likely than tripling on United imo considering our budgets and I'd prefer to leave that door open.

Is it really no chance? Wolves were the ones that caused the postponement after all.

If I knew that United double in GW21 for sure that would swing my decision heavily in favor of DDG.

Thanks. I have Steer and Ramsdale who I just bought in about 3 weeks ago for Guaita, so no value tied to him.
I’m leaning towards DDG as I won’t own 3 United and will bank of them having doubles soon. I’ll get a playing backup when foster returns plus I’m very likely to FH22 rather than BB

Agree. Buy Ederson, play him every game, pick a 3.9m GK as reserve and forget about it every week.

It's not as if you need more than one Man City midfielder or striker as the chances of two attackers playing more than one game is slim.

I actually think this season might break this rule.

If you went Ramsdale/DDG over the next 8 GWs you could get 4 more games out of your keeper than if you just stuck with Ramsdale or if you went Ederson. 6 if you BB in 22.

For 6 extra games, is that worth the additional 1.1m? I think it is. If you're concerned with rotating the keepers, just play Ramsdale every week and bench DDG.

        My tentative plan as well.

The only problem is, GW22 can very naturally be a TC week instead.

I could easily get 11 DGWs and have a bench of Foster, Cancelo, Bernardo, Livra.

        Covered Lloris as an option.

Feel he's worse than DDG - more expensive, you might need all 3 Spurs slots (more likely than wanting 3 United anyway)

Those games in hand. He'll play all whilst outfield players are rested.

There could be a timing opportunity. DDG should have his doubles early as United have space in GW21/22 and European commitments later. Spurs only have GW22 in the near future.

Ahh I see I thought both DDG & Lloris started at 5.5. With the 0.3 diff in mind I agree DDG might be the better expensive pick

The problem for me is everyone nearly enough has Ramsdale including me

How are you going to climb the rankings if you have the same players as everyone else?

Saying that I fancy him to be the top scoring goalkeeper at the end of the season so don't want to sell him.

Currently on Ramsdale Guaita. Hopefully Guaita will play vs NEW, since he's a great cover for Ramsdale future blanks as well.

go for it … my two 4.5s have given me 89 points so far, and no need for a hit or even a transfer 🙂

      Good info!

I am going to DDG & keeping Ramsdale for the BGWs & DGWs & BB opportunity.

If Pope was cheaper than 5.4 he would be a shout as Burnley have 4 DGWs to come

Are you keeping Ramsdale because of the value tied to him? Given EFL semis as well, there’s every chance Arsenal won’t double until after 27

Considered Bachmann? Either as an enabler or genuine option with DGWs coming up

I feel fortunate that I don't have this problem as someone with Ramsdale/Sanchez combo for almost 15 gameweeks. It's kind of funny how spending that 0.5 extra on second GK which many FPL managers don't want to at the start of the season, turn out to be one of the best decisions I've made this season. A simple tactic of having 2 playing goalkeepers because of Covid-19, unpredictable injuries and postponements worked exactly how I wanted. Of course I haven't always picked the right one but it's fine, benched points are better than no points. It's about that feeling of security, reliability and balance for me.

My advice to others would be to keep Ramsdale if they bough for less than 5.0. You won't get a better keeper at this price and Arsenal defence is far better than many think.

ML Teams that carefully avoided United assets are running the show. So far Rangnick hasn’t done much to persuade me of the contrary. Good post by the way.

Upgrading the backup keeper to De Gea/Lloris. Plenty of games in hand and strong cover.

I think he is yes but I wouldn't buy any City now. The DGWs are upon us and in that time they play ARS and CHE when other teams could play 4 more favorable games.

Good read this article. Didn’t realise just how many Watford players are involved in AFCON. Holding King seemed logical with them having a lot of games to reschedule but if half the team behind him are missing then how good will they be?

This is why I went Broja over King, they have some key players that will be missing soon.

    RAMSDALE
    Trent Cancelo Alonso Williams
    Son Jota Foden Bowen
    Ronaldo Broja

    FOSTER LACAZETTE MBEUMO TIERNEY

Currently on 10 players 1 FT 0.6m ITB. Thinking of taking a hit so that I avoid playing Williams... maybe Lacazette & Ramsdale > Jesus & DDG? Jesus can be any forward up to 8.7 but I think he starts next game and tempted to risk it.

Tierney to a Man Utd defender, probably Maguire, would serve you OK for the next two GW's.

I’ve got 8.4 as Laca replacement. I’m thinking Antonio. He should at least play and get chances, where as Jesus won’t return consistently.

The other I could gamble on is DCL. Is he supposed to be fit again? Seen his flag is gone and they’ve got fewer fixtures coming up.
