Chelsea v Liverpool team news: Lukaku, Alisson, Matip + Firmino absent

Sunday’s Premier League action continues at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea host Liverpool.

Kick-off is at 16:30 GMT.

The big team news is that Romelu Lukaku is not in Thomas Tuchel’s matchday squad.

The 28-year-old has scored in his last two Premier League appearances but found himself at the centre of a controversy this week after an interview was broadcast in which he said he was unhappy with his role at Stamford Bridge.

As a result, the Belgian forward has been dropped, with Mason Mount, Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic lining up in the attacking positions.

At the back, Andreas Christensen and Reece James are out, while Jorginho and Callum Hudson-Odoi are substitutes, with N’Golo Kante and Kai Havertz amongst those coming in.

For Liverpool, they make three changes from Gameweek 20, as Alisson, Joel Matip and Roberto Firmino miss out after suspected positive Covid tests, in addition to manager Jurgen Klopp who won’t be at today’s game.

That means Caoimhin Kelleher starts in goal, with Ibrahima Konate and James Milner also featuring in the starting XI.

GAMEWEEK 21 LINE-UPS

Chelsea XI: Mendy, Chalobah, Silva, Rudiger, Azpilicueta, Kante, Kovacic, Alonso, Mount, Havertz, Pulisic

Subs: Kepa, Jorginho, Saul, Barkley, Hudson-Odoi, Ziyech, Sarr, Vale, Hall

Liverpool XI: Kelleher, Alexander-Arnold, Konate, van Dijk, Tsimikas, Fabinho, Henderson, Milner, Salah, Mane, Jota

Subs: Adrian, Keita, Gomez, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jones, Beck, Williams, Morton, Pitaluga

Chelsea side completely obliterated with injuries and still manages a point against pool.

If you look at the 11 they managed to field, it was still pretty strong.

Liverpool only missing Alisson, Matip, Firmino, Thiago, Robertson, Origi, Minamino, Elliot

So 5 first team starters and 3 attacking bench options missing from Liverpool

But ok carry on with your narrative.

What a biased comment. ‘Obliterated’. I mean, come on. Both teams could have won it. Both teams had players missing. You were at home. Better for Liverpool to get a draw at Chelsea than Chelsea drawing at home.

Watkins off to Arsenal as Auba will be going in this window. Arsenal want DCL but Everton won’t be selling him in Jan.

Really think Auba goes this window? Think he'll hang around like a bad smell, like Ozil did.

Watkins or DCL would be exciting signings though

No, they will loan him out with obligation to buy. Newcastle being talked about but I reckon he goes to Spain or Juve.
New regime gets rid of bad apples quick..

I’d take Watkins - good hold-up play and can play as a wide forward if needs be.

Hope you're right. They way the teams form picked up when he was omitted and not missing chance after chance, makes you suspect the team were happy to see him gone.

Watkins would be more flexible. Would be a young and exciting XI

We don’t know the full details of what happened behind the scenes but it’s harsh to call him a bad apple when he did so much for us. Though I sadly think he won’t be as good as before again.

I agree... They will ditch him now, waiting won't change anything, only cost money. And this Arsenal team is better without him. Laca with youngsters has been the solution needed

He’s not woeful but is he really better than Aubameyang? I think DCL/Toney are better than Watkins.

For what Arsenal needs it is a huge UPGRADE. auba is not a link up player and Watkins is, and latter is also a very good first defender, one of the closest to Firmino in that aspect. And auba is 32 and Watkins is 25 or something.

I think those who sold got lucky to a degree. Son provided consistency points, Bowen has been dreamy and though CR7 botched his captaincy vs Newcastle he pulled it back last week and has a chance vs wolves. Effectively brought those 3 in by shifting funds up top and freeing up a mid spot.

Got very lucky with salah’s output but it’s horrible watching Liverpool games as a non owner so will be bringing him back as soon as he gets back

It was totally the wrong move, protected by cheer luck. Once out of 50 times type of luck. I honestly don't understand the reasoning behind it and would be ashamed of calling myself a pro player after that. Just because you got away with it (more or less btw, because he scored today) does not mean it was the right move.

Missing Mane and Salah is more important than any stats... Firmino, Jota and whoever is fit og Origi/mina or ox. No point in looking for stat it would be a totally different set up. Like with City miss, stats goes up in smoke when ever Pep does his small tweaks, etc. Not sure, but if Milner not on pitch Jota or a Firmino is probably on pens.

Who is BEST SALAH REPLACEMENT? DGW is essential (not just for 22, but beyond).

(I've already absorbed a Salah price drop by keeping hold of him for LEI & CHE games. but he is about to drop again tonight and although he is top player for price, I'd rather ditch tonight)

this is true mate. Although I feel as I have missed so many price rises, resulting in plenty of points lost this season. and owning Salah since GW1 and potentially getting 0.1 extra is measley in comparison. I dunno. just frustration a bit I guess...

        you're right though...

I just did Salah to Raph (someone I wanted long term), then will decide on the best forward closer to the deadline once fixtures are confirmed

    Silly question alert :

If i do Salah>Son now, and FH next gw, the transfer counts right? I mean I'll get back my team with Son on gw23 right?

As long as you get Son now (gw 22 that is) and FH next week (23) you get Son back 24.

Benderek in the 9-0 loss vs. Man United.

      +2 (appearance points)
      -4 (9 concedeed)
      -2 (own goal)
      -3 (red card)

      = -7 points

Think it could be better if only 'real' assists (awarded by Opta, so Kante and TAA only today) got the 9bps assist points. 'FPL assists' only get the assist points but not the bonus contribution.

I was thinking real 3 points vs fantasy 2 points but I really like your idea. Still get it for the fun of the game, more points etc...

Alonso got a 5 point assist today for what would have been deemed a cross if Kova didn't score.

Trent was the final player to touch the ball before Salah scored, real.

Kelleher touches it between Alonso & Kova, FPL assist.

Couldn't disagree more I love "fantasy" assists. It makes things so much more exciting. Anything that puts more points into the game is a good thing in my opinion.

So the move to sell Salah effectively for Ronaldo 3 gameweeks ago appears to have been worthwhile.

Salah has scored 9pts over those weeks, Ronaldo 13 with a game in hand. Also now dont need to use a transfer to remove Salah.

Red flag and release price protect is to prevent surges when they become available, not drops.

    I think.

Salah is arguable playing at a level higher than when Liverpool won the league. However there are too many players whose level have dropped - Mane, VVD, Henderson and Fabinho in particular are just not at the level they were. For me I think Liverpool need to look to replace Mane with somebody better like Mbappe.

Would completely disagree with that. He is at the same level. He has saved us so many times this season.

          1. @persecuted_by_mods
              2 years, 3 months ago

Completely disagree, he was elite, then dipped and now is doing the DE Gea where he returns to form, then flops, then returns to form, then flops

His decision making is worse now, at crosses he's way worse, near post shots worse, everything has declined. Not the point where he's a bad goalie and he can have 5-8 games in a row where you think he's back but overall nope he has definitely dipped from his lofty original standards

                This.

Alisson is nowhere near the level he was. He’s certainly not the best in the league this season. He has a good game now and then, but so prone to mistakes also.

Man City have 20 + viable players who just rotate in.

          Liverpool 15.

Chelsea more than the reds plus loads of good young academy products on loan.

Basically the sovereign wealth and oligarchs are beating the NYSE.

Trent & Salah are at as high/higher a level.

Gini is not there (Wijnaldum). He was the Kante, running like a madman to sweep up the ball and retain momentum in the game. Fabinho is still the same but he must cover too much ground because Gini is not here anymore.

Alisson should have done better with 2 of the last 3 goals he conceded (Son and Lookman), that’s 5 points.

He’s nowhere near his best lol so many wobbles and should be doing better for most of the goals conceded lately.

Wouldn’t say he is better than Ederson, De Gea, Mendy, Martinez.
