How the world’s leading FPL managers are faring in Double Gameweek 22

Using LiveFPL’s array of tools, we look at the squad make-ups and chip usage of the world’s leading Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

We will examine the 1,000 names in LiveFPL’s ‘Legendary Managers’ list – the historic cream of the crop, much like our own Hall of Fame – but chiefly those in the top 10k in the current overall rankings.

Between the two groups (where there will of course be some overlap), these are the managers who can offer us a better gauge of FPL ownership and chip strategy, as opposed to the overall figures that are skewed by the growing number of untouched ‘ghost teams’.

There is heaps of useful information beyond overall and top 10k figures on the LiveFPL site, of course, such as ownership stats for different rank tiers – as seen in the graphic below (click to expand):

TOP 10K AND ‘ELITE’ MANAGERS: GAMEWEEK 22 CAPTAINCY

Over half of the top 10,000 FPL managers handed the armband to Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) ahead of Friday’s deadline, with the Portuguese veteran promptly going and missing Manchester United’s first Double Gameweek 22 fixture at Villa Park.

A not-inconsiderable 14.2% backed Bruno Fernandes (£11.7m) for the captaincy, with a further 5.3% making the midfielder their vice-captain – so there’ll be nervous waits for the Brentford v Manchester United teamsheets on Wednesday. Fernandes was only the fifth-most-popular vice-captain option, however, so there’ll be relatively few managers belatedly benefitting from his haul, with Watford’s strike duo the most popular deputies.

The table above shows what the 1,000 Hall of Famers have done regarding Gameweek 22 captaincy, with Ronaldo an even more popular option and less trust placed in Watford’s two budget forwards.

TOP 10K: CHIP USAGE

There was a smattering of chips used within the top 10k this weekend, the most popular of which was the Free Hit.

Over 5% of these leading managers couldn’t resist the lure of a Double Gameweek and deployed the chip but the results have been middling so far, not helped by Ronaldo’s no-show, Mason Mount‘s (£7.7m) one-pointer, the widespread omission of Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) and the postponement of the north London derby.

Ignoring the first Wildcard, almost half of the top 10k have still yet to use a single chip heading into Gameweek 23.

Over 12% of these leading bosses have cashed in at least two of their chips, however, as we approach a time of the season when blanks and doubles will ramp up a gear.

TOP 10K and ‘ELITE’ MANAGERS: TEMPLATE SQUAD

Fernandes entered the top 10k ‘most-owned’ squad in timely fashion, replacing the injured Son Heung-min (£10.7m) in the template team.

The Hall of Famers unsurprisingly favour a similar group, although Ronaldo’s ownership figure is 10% greater than it is in the top 10k and Joshua King (£5.8m) is, marginally, the preferred Watford forward.

TOP 10K: AVERAGE NUMBER OF PLAYERS OWNED PER TEAM FOR GAMEWEEK 23

Should Aston Villa’s mooted Double Gameweek 23 materialise (this remains speculation at this early stage), FPL managers will have work to do: the top 10k, for instance, own an average of just 0.44 players from Steven Gerrard’s squad.

Possible opponents Burnley and Leeds are similarly underrepresented.

Anyone know why Arsenal have a blank in 25? Cant be cup-related if they're the only team (except Chelsea at CWC) blanking..? Any chance of a game being rearranged for that slot?

      Move Dalot.
Laporte? Regullion? or a Wolves defender? Villa if you believe they will keep clean sheets again.

Then Ramsdale, as Arsenal have two blanks soon. Get Lloris?

Rest looks ok, even if Kane is expensive and not doing too much.

    Hi all,

Struggling to get a plan together with this injury ridden team. Do you have any tips? Ivan Toney is the obvious transfer out, but look at my bench..

    Sanchez
    Tierney / TAA / Cancelo
    B.Silva / Foden / Jota / Bowen
    Antonio / Toney / Watkins

Bench: Steele / Son ** / Reece James** / Livramento**

    £0.0 ITB.

    Thanks

The rules set a fairly low bar to qualify for postponement, so there's a good chance the club applying knows they'll be okay. the only rejection so far has been Spurs. However their request was because they wanted to instead play in Europe, which isn't in the rules and got rejected.

Obvs there were earlier cases before all this postponement malarkey became the norm...such as Ars Brentford going ahead. PL have created a right mess!

I think they Spurs had another early request or they were in talks with PL about it at least, but it was during delta and also denied. I believe they had 4 cases back then.

I'm thinking about using the second wildcard soon and am looking at Eze, how did he look during his minutes the other day and how likely is he to pick up game time over the next 2/3 GWs do we think? Such a great player on his day so am wondering if he could be a viable punt vs. Gallagher? Other option would be Olise also...

    Quick question. A or B in terms of players you'd want in your squad;

    A) Son, Dennis (Dennis will sit on the bench)

    B) Ronaldo, Sissoko (Sissoko will sit on the bench)

Removed the rest of the team, so I'm not sure if context is actually lost now?

        Context is;

        A)
        Ederson
TAA - Cancelo - Robbo - Ait Nouri - Tierney
        Salah - KDB - Bowen
        Ronaldo - ASM

        Subs: Broja, Ramsey, Sissoko

        B)
        Ederson
TAA - Cancelo - Robbo - Ait Nouri
        Salah - KDB - Bowen - Son
        Broja - ASM

Subs: Dennis - Ramsey - Tierney

Ridiculous, I will die on this hill. If you can field a starting 11 and subs, you should have to play.. regardless of how many first team are out. Charlie Taylor has an injury, it's not Covid related so why get the game postponed? Arsenal had their NLD postponed with 1 Covid case (Odegaard) a load of injuries and multiple players going out on loan, how is that anyone's fault but their own?

Burnley I can sympathise with a little more as they will have a thinner squad than the likes of Chelsea/Liverpool etc, we played yesterday with a full team of under 21's on the bench (plus Rodrigo).

Obviously it's an absolutely extreme circumstance if you don't have enough players to field a keeper, or fielding a keeper as a striker lol. But all these teams surely have enough players in their ranks to be able to field 11 plus subs? What sort of message does it put out to youngsters if they request the games being called off due to not having enough first team players. Do you not think the younger lads can come in and do a job?

It is the FA's fault for making the rules so easy to exploit but it HAS to stop, no excuses anymore.

i think Arsenal would have played their youngsters if the NLD wasn't up next followed by a cup semi final, as it is they obviously thought it would be more beneficial to game the system, and chance their arm asking for a postponement since other clubs have done the same

But surely the job of the manager is to manage situations like this, everyone in the league is going through the same issues, it's a ridiculous Bias towards the top 6 clubs. If a game can go ahead and you have enough players, you should play the fixture. As someone mentioned below, Arsenal have 63 registered players who are eligible to play in the PL, no excuse.

Exactly my point.. why aren't they using them? We (Leeds) can't be the only team that has good youngsters? Arsenal are the worst of the lot having their game called off due to not having enough players when they've shipped at least 3 off on loan..

Arsenal are not worst of the lot, we just exploited the same rule that everyone else has been doing. No need to try and point the finger at anyone. You should only be questioning the premier league, because the integrity of this season is at an all time low.

I can definitely point the finger (it's obviously my own opinion), but how can you disagree that Arsenal out of all the postponements had the least amount of players actually out with Covid? I thought the postponements were only going to be approved if a squad had a certain amount of covid cases meaning they couldn't field a squad. Nothing to do with injuries, players being sent out on loans or international duty? I will happily be proven wrong but I think you only had the one covid case prior to the NLD.. which in my eyes, is not enough to have a game called off. Why aren't you confident enough to use youngsters, you've got good young players?

      Depends on Villa DGW situation.

If no DGW then I'd roll. Otherwise I'd say Mount to Ramsey/Coutinho is your priority given this will be his last game for a while (and not a great fixture).

I've avoided this topic, but I'll just state it here:

Before the "13 senior outfielders" rule, there were too many variables in deciding whether a match went on or not

So the EPL board simplified it with rules that make postponements predictable: fewer than 13 senior outfielders, with 1+ of the absentees being due to Covid

Since this new rule was announced, they have followed it to the letter. No favourites. No pity for those who have many absentees but no Covid. No influence from TV companies, big clubs, nothing

Just a clear and obvious rule, ike offsides

And just like offsides, complaints won't change anything

When burnley request watford game to get postponed, Dennis and King owner do the same...

Even more, we got the same news before deadline that NLD might be postponed,
and the news that Burnley Leicester postponed already that might impact Burnley vs Watford in the future...

I'm not sure people are complaining about their being a hard and fast rule. The complaints seem to stem from the one key covid related part of the rule -

"with 1+ of the absentees being due to Covid"

I reckon most people just feel that the covid part of the postponement should be the key part. So something like if you have 10% of your available 25 man first team out with covid then you postpone, otherwise you play with your youngsters.

But that's the rule. It's clear for all to see. Like bonus point calculations, you dont have to like it but you arent going to change it. I wish people would just stop whinging.

It is still stupid rule. If the team is in trouble, just ask someone with a knock or other issue to get covid and request and get postponement. Easy.

I know that it is the rule. I'm talking about the aspect that most people are complaining about. "don't complain" - why not? It's supposed to be a covid related rule but only 1 of your players needs to actually have covid. It's a stupid rule.

But a simple truth like this is too hard for people to understand.

      1. Steve McCroskey
        • 10 Years
        2 years, 2 months ago

        I don't think that's the case.

To my mind, this rule would not exist without COVID. However, clubs are taking advantage of other factors which have always been an issue they've had to contend with (injuries, AFCON, suspensions) to get matches postponed. The rule should have specified that a certain percentage of unavailable first team players must have been the result of positive COVID cases, and nothing else.

        The whole thing stinks.

At least there is a rule now, but it is not an ideal one and should perhaps be modified.

I understand that Arsenal were only short of having 13 senior outfielders because they had just loaned out two senior players before buying replacements, despite already knowing that they were in danger of being short. They only had one Covid case and shouldn't have been allowed to get away with it - no wonder Spurs were upset about the postponement.

Other European Leagues simply insist that matches have to go ahead, fielding junior players to make up the numbers if necessary, like all teams had to in the FA Cup and Leeds have been doing in the Premier League.

Perhaps things will get better when non-symptomatic Covid cases and contacts are no longer forced to self-isolate, or when the self-isolation period is reduced - after all, the latest variants are no worse than the common cold for those who have been fully vaccinated and have no other underlying health problems.
Clubs should also arrange to get all their players fully vaccinated as soon as possible and make it clear to any refuseniks that they play at their own risk if they refuse to comply, unless they have genuine medical reasons (do any of them have genuine medical reasons?).

Good lord, where do I begin

Okay some recent dumb rules that have thankfully been overturned for good reason:

      1. Last seasons offside rule. Utter and complete garbage. It's not a goal if we say so according to self drawn lines and subjective decision making on when the ball leaves the foot. Balls up of the highest order. We all knew the rule. We all knew the explanation. Yet complaints were heard throughout the season because the rule was a steaming pile of dog $hit

      2. Last seasons hand ball rule. Another ingenious rule cooked up by our trusty rule makers. 300 penalties in the first gameweek and hearts in mouth on every corner, cross and free kick in the box. Zero logic applied. We all knew the rule. We all knew how it worked yet we rightly complained incessantly because that's how it works when stupidity is thrust upon us.

Now to the matter at hand. This "rule" is next level moronic and anyone who accepts it needs to have their head checked.

Arsenal released two players to fall below a threshold to postpone a game they want played later. Did they follow the rule? Yes. Lord have mercy if you miss the issue here. This is not a conspiracy theory, flat earth, fake moon landing, orange juice drinking, fake testing, fluster cluck of misinformation. This was brutal abuse of a deeply flawed rule that leaves us with the potential of innumerable postponements which go way beyond fpl. But some morons in this thread seem to think it's good. Do they work for the premier league? Do they love to see society suffer needlessly over stupidity? Have they gained an advantage so far and hope it may continue? I don't know. What I do know is this is the dumbest rule in the history of rules and I call on all fellow logical thinkers to complain the heck out of this monstrosity until it is inevitably changed and replaced by something worse

Exactly Mark - in theory all you need is 1 COVID case to get a game postponed.
Then just say others are "unavailable" due to strains or knocks etc....

Before the 1+ covid part got added, you couldn't call off a game because of injuries or anything else like Afcon or suspensions. So the additon of the Covid part has allowed those other issues to be included. If you have one player out with Covid and many more out due to other reasons, you can't really claim it is the Covid sufferer that is pushing you over the brink, like Arsenal did.

It reminds me of the Castlemaine XXXX advert. They don't make funny adverts like this any more.

The problem with rules is there are always loopholes and ways to exploit them that weren't intended. Eventually you get more rules and sub-clauses and conditions added to 'clarify' the original rules and then you end up with something labyrinthine or obtuse or just plain dumb, or any combination of the above.

What is missing is GOOD FAITH. Clubs have not acted in good faith (by majority) and that has created an impossible tangle.

United and Spurs were apparently the first to manipulate the situation to serve their own advantage. Liverpool then came out with the most blatant apparent cheating of all. And after that, other clubs (like West Ham, like Burnley, like Arsenal, like Leicester) have thought "well, why should we suffer when others are getting away with it? We would just look like fools".

Let's be clear. The 25-man squad is a red herring. Any player aged 22 or younger as of 1st January that is on the books of a club is eligible to play. They qualify as U21 players and don't need to be declared in the squad. So the idea that any club is incapable of putting out a team is far-fetched. It's all about whether they can put out a good enough team (in their eyes) or whether they think they will be better served by a postponement.

Leeds are one of the few clubs that appear to have acted in good faith and look at some of the teams they have fielded. Others could have done the same but they have chosen not to. That's the issue here: absence of good faith. All the rest is mere noise.

The issue isn't not being clear on the rules.
The issue is they are a farce!!

they were designed to deal with covid but instead being EXPLOITED by teams to postpone matches & play when it suits them

& why shouldn't there be complaints , other rules have changed after complaints eg offside/handball

Fans who might already traveled or booked an overnight stay are losing out with these last cancellations some have been hours before match time

A glimmer of hope for Arsenal v Burnley in GW23 (though who knows what state Arsenal are in).

A source wouldn't be a source if you tell every entitled div on the Internet who it is would it.

So you got it from a nobody on twitter.

You've got no source. Just another bullish*t merchant

i am of the opinion this is likely true and the reason for not giving his scource is also plausible, may as well have kept the info to yourself freddo ,not a great deal to gain without evidence ,however people could be more gracious ,not is if they can do anything anyway...

The deadline is done, it's not like anything can be done about it or if I can gain anything from it, my mate gave me the heads up & I've just passed it on, Leicester applied, he seems to think it's as good as off.

I'm not interested in what these virgins think tbh, people can take it how they want, can't do anything about it now.

I have Maddison & Davies so hoping it's wrong but the blokes been solid too many times for me.

Only known thing is that Leicester are missing 10 first team players:

      Thanks for the heads up.

Dno if I should be happy about it.

      Got Emerson, Maddison and Kane.
Will get Coufal (1), Lowton (most likely 0) and Ramsey (12) in.

Okay, I've gone into work today & grilled my mate who has the source & this is what he said & what I think.

He said he's been told Leicester are trying to get it called off & they expect it to be called off, so saying it was off yesterday was a bit of an over reaction from him IMO because it's not been decided.

As a Maddison & Davies owner I'm pretty hopeful that it's just been an over reaction on his part but there's nothing that can be done about it anyway, we'll soon find out.

Does anyone know why Joe from the Scoutcast (Joe Lepper) is no longer in the 'Mods and Cons' League?

So West Ham and City don't have any doubles coming up, but they're still good assets. You have any plans getting rid?

Dropped Bernardo for Coutinho, have Cancelo. That's it, though. May pick up Bowen or Antonio on a WC. Still don't trust KdB enough to drop Ronaldo for him.

Cancelo and Bowen safe for now, wavering on Foden but fixtures good so not a priority

I’m amazed as always by people unwillingness to accept the decisions in relation to covid postponements. It’s literally like having a nagging voice inside your head continually going on and on and on.

Can we not have an upgrade to the site have this by thread topic?
Then we could let them going on and on to their hearts content and the rest of us can avoid it if we so wish.
