Meet the Manager & Great and the Good – The story of the season so far

Joe catches up with Great and the Good league founder Greyhead to look back on 2021/22 so far and look at some key tips for the rest of the Fantasy Premier League season.

With less than half of the campaign to go, the Meet the Manager series takes some time to assess how it has gone so far for some of the most engaged and prolific managers in the game.

As well as looking back on lessons learned from the series’ guests, Greyhead reveals the highs and lows of the legendary managers he is tracking.

This is the second time Greyhead has been a guest on the series season, with his previous appearance focusing on his own success in FPL, and this campaign in particular.

During their latest hour-long chat, Joe and Greyhead look at the variety of narratives across the season to see how managers have coped. This takes in the strong template start to the campaign, discussions around ‘big at the back’ defensive investment as well as how they have tackled Covid chaos and its impact on top-flight football.

Why has Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) been so pivotal to their performance and just what is their favoured formation? How valuable have chips such as Wildcards and Free Hits been? And how have traditional patient managers coped with the recent flurry of festive transfers and hits?

These questions and more are considered during their chat, which also reveals the best-performing Meet the Manager guest so far and why he has excelled.

In addition, Joe and Greyhead look ahead to the rest of the campaign. What will be the emerging narratives? And will 3-4-3 formation make a return, albeit in a very different way?

Elsewhere, Gameweek 23 is not forgotten, and Greyhead reveals his team and plans should any fixture changes be announced. Crucial to his decisions will be how to squeeze Salah back into his team, when the Egypt star returns from the Africa Cup of Nations.

This latest episode was recorded on Monday January 17. It is also available as a podcast.

Any Thoughts on what i should do with my team?

    Sanchez
TAA - Cancelo - Ait nouri
    Jota - Bowen - Fernandes - Trossard
    Kane - Antonio - King

Bench: Pickford - Gray - Emerson - Pinnock

Stars just aligned for some people. Son injury, Ronaldo injury (despite Rangnick playing it down) made it a relatively simple call. I'd like to think if I could have got him for free I would have stuck the captaincy on him. But yeah, the haul was one of the luckier ones of recent times.

Defence imo, cause the goal/assists are so spread around the attack that it is impossible too hit the 2 right players. 1 of Kdb or Foden is enough and 2 defenders.

In my opinion PL rules are way to soft, fact that loaned out & suspended players are being counted is a joke.

Clubs should be forced to play and use youth\2nd team players or forfeit, soon enough we would see few miracle recoveries and less positive Covid cases.

the problem is they most likely realise this but cant change them now as that would be unfair to teams that try to get games postponed after a rule change and get rejected when other teams before succeeded and both teams in excact same situation

        • 7 Years

Especially considering 18 out of 20 of the current PL teams are active in the U23 PL D1/D2. I said before, rather than suspend games they should allow temporary registrations over the usual squad limit size.

With that being said, as a West Ham fan who just watched us throw away the chance to go 5 points clear of Arsenal, 7 of Spurs and 8 of Man U, I'm kinda happy that Arsenal & Man U (2) and Spurs (4) are going to see some fixture congestion and hopefully fatigue in trying to knock us out of fourth place with their games in hand.

people on here need to take their FPL goggles off for a moment and realise that at the end of the day that the Premier League is a product that people pay for and having decimated squads play each other isn't exactly getting your monies worth. the quality, standard everything plummets. this has to be one of the factors behind the cancellations (but they wont say this out loud)

I'd argue the product is being damaged more by these postponements. The league is losing its credibility.

Yeah, mad season. Still not targeting any DGW teams until there is more certainty. Most of my rivals played their FH this GW and I've gained 30+ points on them, now that could change depending on midweek games.

PL is just a mockery now. Why having these U23 teams playing every week, investing funds in academies, what is wrong with a team of e.g. 7 senior players + youngsters? Biggest budgets in Europe, biggest spendings in Europe and yet you can't keep playing games, ridiculous.

    1. boc610
      • 12 Years
      2 years, 2 months ago

your looking at this from a purely FPL perspective, we've seen u23s play in league cup and barely any cut the mustard. the premier league don't want a watered down product of poor quality games just to fulfill fixtures

ok its about money, but the football brings in the money, people watch these games all over the world to see the big names and dont want north london derby with un23 players filling in for them." because I captained Dennis " isnt a good enough reason to fulfill a fixture . im being faectious because there are a lot on here that dont seem to look beyond how its effects their FPL team (im not saying your one of these btw)

Bit general though? Not all FHers followed the same template. I'm on 52 with DDG, Lamptey, Alonso, Bruno (C), Jorgy, Mount, Ronaldo to go. If the two no-shows also fail to play, I've Cucurella, Reggie and Bowen in that order.

Sure, there were single GW players I could have gone for, but I didn't. Roll on DGW23 (Disaster)

To be fair, I very nearly gave Dennis the armband. Ronaldo's flag was a factor too, even with Ralf's comments; maybe he plays, but is he then rested for the second? No guarantee he starts today, either! Might well be a perfect opportunity to look at other options, and use him as an impact sub whenever. I get the feeling he really doesn't mind being benched right now. He's already mentally in the winter break.

I used FH1 on Boxing day. Didn't need the first wildcard in the end but should have changed Rapha to Bowen. The only move I made was Watkins to Ronaldo for the NY fixtures.

Would have used BB this week the plan was Salah>Son(c) and bring in De Gea along with White, Davies and Brownhill.

    DDG - Bachmann

    TAA - Cancelo - Dawson - White - Livramento

    Jota - Maddison - Gundogan - Bowen - Raphinha

    Ronaldo - Antonio - Broja

To get Salah in for Maddison (obviously when he’s back) I’d have 5.4 for a midfielder - would you do Gundogan to Martinelli this week?

Its a bit tricky with the blanks but you could make it work. I'm thinking of bringing him in on WC this week if the Burnley game seems ok. But I'm 100% FHing in GW27, so that leaves only 1 blank to navigate. Upside is a couple of nice fixtures to exploit (BUR BRE) when others will have minimal Arsenal assets

Obviously timing is key for Bilva to Foden, but if you watch the matches, you know Foden will get tap-ins and more opportunities for the positions he takes and Bilva will likely get a jammy assist or score a worldie.

Dgw23 is in some question now, otherwise Keane to Digne is a good transfer in as well.

Not convinced about Watkins, not convinced about Coutinho (why him all of a sudden in our midfields? Not remotely match fit but scored a far post sitter - that seems enough to prompt a tidal wave of transfers in), certainly not convinced about Digne. Don't be blinded by a potential DGW for Villa, folks. If I do go for a Villa player, I reckon Demarai Gray to Ramsey will be my transfer, but that doesn't exactly leave me salivating over a potential 'haul'.

shaky form this season so far. He is being built up a lot due to "attacking potential". I'd like to see some evidence of quality/assists/ set piece delivery etc before I get excited. He feels like a punt. Similar to how people talk about Reguilon. Never does much.

        1. Zenith UK

Evidence? How's 22 assists and 31 clean sheets across his past three seasons for, let's be honest, an Everton side that hasn't exactly been setting the PL alight (8th (18/19), 12th (19/20) & 10th (20/21)). Yes he hasn't had a good season but considering he'd signed a relatively long contract with them not so long ago, it's weird he's been shipped out this quickly. Once he's up and running again he'll benefit anyone who has him.

Same reason people are tipping Coutinho. Guy has bags of ability and talent, he's under a manager he clearly has a good relationship with and probably everything they do will go through him.

I have Watkins and not at all convinced by him. But Digne/Cash are both good options for sure, Villa has a mean defense with great fixtures upcoming. Digne almost scored on two occasions last match as well.
Coutinho is still a mystery, I think Ramsey for 2.5Mn less is better

I agree on Coutinho. It smells like Bale and James Rodriguez. They could be great and the player is world class but the fitness? I think I'd prefer to wait and see if possible especially since midfield is chock full of good options.

Watkins I like though. He has started every game and played 90 mins consistently for Gerrard. He plays further up top than Ings, younger with more energy, and he is able to get amongst the goals. He'll also likely be on pens if Ings isn't on the pitch.

Digne is arguably the safest investment. Villa defense has been strong under Gerrard and he's a very attacking player and has a superb cross and set pieces. 5.0m is a great price for him. At 5.5m I would probably hold off but at 5.0m no brainer. We also are struggling for good defensive options now outside of TAA and Cancelo.

In terms of filling our squad, Watkins and Digne are superb imo. If they double this week I will probably take a hit for both which raises funds for Salah.

      1. AARON-1

Digne had 8 assists 2019-2020 and 9 last season, so I can understand the temptation.
However, he played 13 of the first 14 matches for Everton this season - always 90 minutes and did next to nothing (0 assists). True to say Everton forwards like Richarlison and DCL have been out but still the statistics don't make positive reading. He may well be ''an attacking player'' but needs to translate that into actual fpl points. Potential is one thing, actually delivering is another. I'm prepared to eat my words but I'll reserve judgement for the time being.

The reason he plays for Villa now is because Benitez doesn't believe in attacking full backs, told him to hang back more, they didn't see eye to eye on that and he took him off set pieces before dropping and selling him

It's been said but he was playing for a defensive Everton team with no CF. How does he get attacking returns if he's forced to defend mostly and is aiming at no one in the box?

If you always wait for FPL points to come in before buying you'll never get ahead. Especially nowadays. I think you effectively have 2 weeks before a bandwagon is just lost to the masses. Reece James being the prime example.

For me the worry with Digne is Martinez. He has conceded a lot higher than his Xgc this season, the opposite of last year. Ramsey is a perfect enabler, but don't expect a haul every week. Watkins is great for the double and the fixtures, that price bracket looks to have a lot of options again.

5 clean sheets in 22 league games for Villa this season. I wouldn't describe that as a 'mean defence'. There's a reason Martinez isn't in as many teams as last season - they generally concede (around 40% owned last season down to around 12% now). I'll keep an eye on Digne. I'll tot up all his assists. Next 6-8 games will be a fair sample size, I reckon. Then, I'll post again. As I say, I'm prepare to eat humble pie, but it doesn't seem a transfer that makes my mouth water. Only time will tell.

I can't see Villa pushing into European places this season, but they will be contenders next season. I think their assets are all ones to keep an eye on long term. I feel Ings must play a role in the team with his scoring ability, but where does he fit in now. Buendia will be a differential, but for me he is still a wait and see. 1-2 players for their double will be enough for me.

Dias, Coutinho & Raphinha -> Robertson, Foden & Ramsey works perfectly for me, leaving 1.0M ITB for Salah. I guess you would be left with another ~1M spare with the same? Wonder if Foden is worth a shout given the strong bench. Think 3 City is worth the risk given their fixtures?

He may well be but he's a wait and see for me. I do expect that when he returns to match fitness he will start firing again.

Robertson is a great pick. Liverpool are they only team that 3 player are needed long term and Jota is out of form and facing rotation once Salah/Mane are back.
Sa is another great pick, looking like him and Ramsey will fight it out for top scoring GK this year.
I agree with MAGA that Dennis is a little uncertain at this time, but his good fixtures dovetail well with Broja so the pair are a nice fit.
Raph/Bowen are both great. KDB is nice for captain in 2 weeks time, but I do wonder if Foden is better value and equally a good captain option.
Still not sure about Digne/Coutinho but good price points to move to other options.
Fernades to Salah is perfect PH.
        Very strong team in summary.

Cheers, tempted by Ramsey/DCL over Cout/Dennis..

too big at the back, why have Digne and Ait Nouri if you will be benching all the time.

Not a bad thing to have a strong bench given postponements and also sets up well for potential BB in 26. Downgrading Coutinho to Ramsey at least gives an easier rotation between the fringe players (including Dennis due to form).

Wouldn't bother pinch hitting Fernandes. Just start with Salah.

Hope he goes down so you can afford. If not, I'd just go Sterling over KdB to save the funds.

I suppose if my bench is strong then Salah might be best bet, or even dbl city mdf with sterling…

I'm not sure if its smart to gamble on Salah falling - only -46% on fplstats & those who still have him may just bench once more

A lot of chat about getting Rahina. I hope people realise he might miss the GW23 double if it comes along.

South American national teams are playing then (it's an international break for them, effectively) so expect him to be away

There's a special place in hell reserved for Bruno cappers. There's also an even more special place reserved for the Bruno cappers and the ones who took Salah out VS Leicester.

What about those who capped Cancelo in 18, took Mo out in 19 and capped Son, capped Son again in 20, capped Bowen in 21 and have capped Bruno in 22...?? 😉

Probably, but I think Brazil's first game is on 27th Jan, and their 2nd qualifier is on 2nd Feb, which is 6 days to get back for GW24
