Chelsea assets disappoint in Double Gameweek 22 as FPL exodus awaits

In an intriguing tactical battle at the Amex, Brighton and Hove Albion fought back to earn a deserved draw against Chelsea, with Adam Webster (£4.4m) and Hakim Ziyech (£7.3m) on the scoresheet.

Our Scout Notes article reflects on the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from the fixture.

CHELSEA UNDERWHELM

Following tonight’s 1-1 draw at Brighton, Chelsea have now dropped points in nine of their past 13 Premier League matches, keeping just two clean sheets during that time.

As a result, we are surely approaching the jumping off-point for the likes of Antonio Rudiger (£6.2m), Marcos Alonso (£5.7m) and Mason Mount (£7.7m), all of whom underwhelmed in Double Gameweek 22, as they served up a combined total of just eight FPL points.

Thomas Tuchel’s side now entertain Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, before two successive blanks due to their involvement at the FIFA World Club Cup.

However, when they do return to Premier League action in Gameweek 26, they sit top of our Season Ticker for ease of fixture right through until Gameweek 33, though it’s debatable just how much attention they will be afforded given their recent showings.

As for Mount, after being benched against Manchester City on Saturday, he struggled to make an impact at Brighton and failed to register a single effort on goal. It’s also worth noting that he has now blanked in five of his last six appearances, averaging just one shot in the box per match during that period.

Above: Mason Mount’s xG shot map Gameweek 18-22

“We looked tired and we are. It’s like this. We knew they were well prepared, had more time to prepare and you saw at the end that the stadium celebrated like it was a victory. That is what you face. We tried everything but you could see we were mentally and physically tired. We need some days off. The boys need some days off, there is no other solution.” – Thomas Tuchel

LIVELY LAMPTEY

Having had his minutes managed against Crystal Palace, Tariq Lamptey (£4.5m) returned to the starting XI tonight, and once again showed plenty of promise in the final-third.

Deployed in an advanced role down Brighton’s right-flank, the attack-minded full-back caused plenty of problems for Alonso, and was successful in four of his six attempted take-ons.

Above: Tariq Lamptey’s touch heatmap v Chelsea in Double Gameweek 22

However, he is averaging just 2.7 points per match across his 14 Premier League appearances this term, a total bettered by four other defenders at Brighton.

Elsewhere, differential Alexis Mac Allister (£5.3m) produced the assist for Adam Webster’s equaliser, and is now Albion’s most in-form player, with 24 points across his last three appearances.

Next up for the Seagulls is an away trip to Leicester City, followed by a blank, though their fixtures from Gameweek 25 onwards are particularly appealing:

“We have a nice squad, good togetherness and we are happy. The back four was sensational. They defended with great courage. It’s an art to defend the way they have done.” – Graham Potter

Brighton and Hove Albion XI: Sanchez, Veltman, Webster, Burn, Lamptey (March 76), Gross (Maupay 62), Alzate, Cucurella, Moder, Mac Allister, Welbeck (Trossard 62)

Chelsea XI: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, Alonso, Kante, Jorginho (Kovacic 80), Ziyech (Werner 80), Mount, Hudson-Odoi, Lukaku (Havertz 80)

Posted this earlier but it was lost in the flood:

Is there anything more to Mitrovic’s performance this season than simply the difference between PL & Championship? I don’t have his stats from last year in front of me, but as I remember it he was pretty awful. And now he’s got 27 goals in 27 games (does this meet the legal criteria for “pulling up trees” status?). What say y’all?

he has shown multiple times he is not PL quality, that being said he could still do a job for a team like Burnley or some other bottom half club, but i wouldn't expect much more than 10 goals from him per season in a good year

He didn’t score tonight and Fulham scored 6. Big class difference from last season but also Fulham more free flowing and a higher scoring team this year. They are averaging over 2.5 goals a game and already scored more than 20 goals than second place.

If my memory serves me correctly (and it may not), most PL seasons he has started with a bang, then invariably at some stage gets a RC, out of the side, comes back in, more undisciplined stuff, falls out of favour with the manager....rinse and repeat.

I have not followed him or the Championship at all this season so not sure if he's finally taken that out of his game.

I mean, he’s also scored 44 in 69 games for Serbia and had the odd purple patch in the top flight before. I’d assume he could put them away regularly if he was playing for an attacking team built around him, but I’m not sure he offers that much beyond that

He was smashing it in the Champ when Fulham went down a few years ago too. I think in part he hates when his clubs sign newer, ‘bigger’ strikers as much as struggles: he’s fought half of them. Hard to manage and motivate psychologically. But absolutely a beast on his (increasingly infrequent) day.

Salah has 5 more games to play at AFCON (probably), 4 of which could go to extra time. Even if he comes though unscathed he will likely have played 7 games in 26 days. His LFC team-mates have only 5 games over the same period, one of which is an FAC tie at Anfield against lower-league opposition.

So don't count on it that Salah is all fired up and ready to go in GW24 (if he even makes GW24). He may pick up a knock and he will certainly be feeling the effects of a big tournament if Egypt go all the way.

Best case for LFC would be for Sudan to beat Egypt tonight and send Salah home early. Wouldn't be holding my breath for that. 😉

In other words, it may be worth keeping an open mind on Salah. He may not be as essential as people assume - not immediately anyway (bearing in mind that Liverpool currently have a blank in GW27 as well).

Cheers, I guess Ronaldo can be a good place holder till Salah returns. If villa have a dgw might just sell him for Watkins. Too much uncertainty to decide on anything at this point.

I agree with most of that, but I’m not sure the blank’s that relevant unless someone has FH plans for GW26 - can’t see anyone going without Mo for a home match against Norwich even if he’s not immediately back up to speed in 24/25

I could well imagine captaining TAA instead. It also depends on which teams have a DGW26 and whether LFC is one of them.

Yep, you effectively have 2 to play (as captains points are doubled), while according to LiveFPL, majority have 3 to play. Probably need a big score from Ronaldo to go green (Bowen's 7 + Coufal probably wont be enough)

Thanks! James definitely has to go, and then whether or not I lose Livra, Brownhill or Bernardo for a hit, sucked to have Dias missing out this week and no bench as it could have really pushed me up in rank (currently on 74pts)

Didn't have mega haul expectations from the Trossard+Dennis transfer for the DGW. But still, a combined total of 5 points after a hit. Not great.

For me Trossard was a no go. Getting them in for me would be a longer look to medium term fixtures and alternatives. Trossard takes the place of valuable midfield assets. Maybe a bit of hindsight (smile)

Hey guys, hope you are all doing well. A bit stuck on what to do with my team

    DDG Steele
    TAA Cancelo Dias Livramento Johnson
    Bruno Jota Bowen Raphinha Saka
    Ronaldo Dennis King

    1 FT
    1.5 ITB

My priority is moving Livramento/Johnson but I'm not sure who to get as a replacement since they are likely to spend most of the time on the bench. I could get Digne but I don't really see the point since the rest of my team has very good fixtures and I'm not sure who I would bench for him.

That's just so far from the facts.
Johnson has been particularly impressive this season and was preferred over Coufal before his injury.

Coufal's direct opponent in the last fixture was also J Harrison, who scored a hattrick.

Johnson's form this season has been superior to Coufal's, this is the consensus among West Ham fans.

Reminds me of Jota vs Firmino, this

Cresswell and Coufal are first choice. Johnson earned the shirt from Coufal for a while when Coufal came back from injury. Coufal took it back when Johnson was needed at LB with the Cresswell injury, and hasn't been rotated since then. Johnson then got dropped for the second half vs Palace for Masuaku of all people (first bad sign), and then got dropped from the starting XI once Cresswell returned from injury vs Norwich

He's a backup player, to Moyes. The fans don't have a say in that. That's how things stand atm. But I'll leave you to it

                      No, you are wrong there.
Johnson was subbed against Palace because he had picked up a YC, it was not at all performance-related.
When he was taken off they had conceded 0 and by the end of the game, 2.

Yes, a yellow card is completely unrelated to the player's performance, and most players on a yellow card in a league game are subbed at half time. Also, the nailed Johnson who's been impressive then started the next two games (Norwich and Leeds) because of how impressive he's been

                        Good luck with your assertion

West Ham were 3-0 at HT in that fixture.
The only logical way they could lose the game is if they went down to ten men.

This is why he was subbed, smart coaching.

A tighter, scoreline and yes, he wouldn't have come off, so amidst your attempt of sarcasm, I somewhat agree with your point, however, as mentioned this fixture had extreme + irregular circumstances.
And not the normal that you are suggesting through your generalisation.

You seem to be completely skipping the fact that Johnson was benched for Norwich and Leeds, after being subbed off at half time

based on his stats, he's a starter from GW9, in form, and only missing out because of injury (and Marcal is filling in but now Marcal is a doubt)

See the fixtures Wolves had on their current run since GW12. Only Liverpool and Man City are currently bad fixtures for Wolves

If they suddenly return to their pre-GW12 selves (they were very underwhelming in the first 11 games of the season), sell or bench

Took a step back and reevaluated. I think this is better than my previous plan:

Royal to Digne for GW23. Second sub now, but actually needed in GW23 if someone in my back 3 is rested/injured (unlikely, but I don't want Royal vs Chelsea or Coufal vs Man U coming on)
Maddison to Coutinho with Jota to Salah in GW24, keeping Gray as a first sub. Gray becomes Maddison in GW28, sidestepping Maddison's worst fixtures (I'd have benched him) and BGW. The Coutinho move can be brought forward if there's a Villa DGW, and I'll start Digne
Coufal to Lamptey for GW25 is on the cards, hopefully for free
I'll probably keep DCL until he becomes Broja in GW27. The fixture transition is perfect, and Rafa is gone

    Sa
    (VC)TAA Cancelo Ait-Nouri
    Jota (C)Foden Maddison Bowen
    CR7 DCL Dennis
    .
    Pickford . Gray Royal Coufal

    5.0m ITB. 1 FT. 250k OR

Good luck, one and all. Covid incidence is dropping in EPL. Here's hoping for calmer times ahead, with the almost weekly DGWs incoming. I'll repeat here that my aim is to get the best players I can reach with the best fixtures, and then cap 'em for any DGWs they stumble upon, rather than chasing multiple doublers per GW

Quick note on Foden, especially with respect to the table used on FFScout's captaincy video for GW23: his "last 4 matches" stats, especially when compared to other City assets are heavily skewed by these factors:
    1. He missed the Newcastle (clubbing, 0 mins) and Leicester (clubbing, 19 mins) maulings
    2. KDB, Sterling and Bernardo started all 4 of their last 4 matches, while Foden had 19 minutes in one of his last 4, meaning he's at a 50 to 70-minute disadvantage for those stats
In his last 4 *starts*, Foden has 2G 2A, and only blanked against Chelsea. ALL his absences have been due to injury + recovery, Covid and the clubbing incident. He's started every game he's been available for, otherwise
This is why he's my captain. When filtering through a whole lot of noise around his data (some his fault, some not), he does stand out as a captain to me vs Southampton's currently porous defence

Nice team! Looks like you have thought your future moves out too, just not sure how relevant those moves will be in a couple of weeks with the current climate.

Another thing, you have a very well rounded squad/bench so I wouldn't be too afraid to use it even if someone might seem to have an unfavourable fixture. Can sometimes save a transfer.

        2 years, 2 months ago

Thanks! I hope my rank matches the team soon. About plans changing: I always adapt. None of this is set in stone, ever

For the squad, most of the planning is on https://www.livefpl.net/myteam/ where I've seen some fixture blocks that I can target with moves, like sidestepping Maddison's tough run via Coutinho and Gray, and the Digne block over Royal's tough run, then Lamptey's insane threat and good fixtures until he becomes James/Alonso around GW29. There's just one hit involved in all that, and it's for Salah. There are other options though, including exactly what you said about trusting the squad and rolling, so I'll switch things up if needed

Picking an XI every week is going to be, err, something 😀

Not much wrong with that squad. Like it a lot.
I was all set on getting Sterling but need the funds for Salah.
I’ve dodged Foden so far due to lack of starts but you’ve turned my head, plus playing up top.
Yeh having a Spurs defender against Chelsea isn’t ideal but Chelsea aren’t exactly scoring a lot.

I’d be tempted to play DCL over Maddison now that Big Dunc is at the wheel.

Thanks! I'm playing DCL... Did you mean Gray? I find it difficult to play anyone over Maddison atm, considering his points since GW13 (including vs Man City), with his only blank being the Liverpool game where he already looked brilliant but went off injured. Gray's form is basically the inverse of that

Even with Big Dunc back, I'm fine with starting just DCL for now and monitoring. Rafa's sacking has taken me completely off selling off all my Everton assets, which was the burning urge after Norwich

Agreed mate… I’m very tempted to use my FT to do Bilva >> Foden

But I unfortunately have other matters that may need attending to… I.e. Alonso and then there is the possibility of a DGW

Is Bilva >> Foden worth a hit, I’m not so sure, it would be very risky

        • 5 Years
        2 years, 2 months ago

Oh, that sounds risky to me too. Gotta prioritise Alonso, I think

Bernardo hasn't looked explosive for a while now. Still a great player by all means, but he seems back to controlling the game rather than being the main threat, with that now carried by the front 3 and KDB

Still, it's a difficult hit. Maybe, just *maybe* justified by capping Foden? Good luck

The only defenders with more assists in FPL since Digne joined the league are TAA and Robertson, and that's before considering the reserved role Benitez had him playing throughout this season

Alonso "can't defend" but was among the top scoring defenders earlier this season. As long as the defence around him is good enough to add clean sheet potential to his attacking threat, and the coach does allow this attacking threat, I believe Digne is one of the best defenders I can get at 5.0, with the following fixtures: Everton, Leeds, Newcastle, Watford, Brighton, Southampton

Who do you recommend with better fixtures and considerable attacking threat at 5.0 or below?

      Good morning 🙂

I'd stay off Villa strikers until at least one Coutinho start, to be sure of who's preferred. Yes, popular opinion everywhere is that Ings should drop out, but Gerrard has stayed dead silent on this

Here's my suggestion: give Kane the Chelsea game, just to be sure who Villa's striker is, and then make the combined move for Foden (you can delay Salah until GW25 by giving Bruno the Burnley game), with Odegaard going for his BGWs + Wolves in GW24. For GW23, Dawson to Ait-Nouri and bench Reguilon, (C)ancelo + (VC)TAA or vice versa

Yup. Nailed and very easy to bench at that price. I'd have still agreed fully with your move if Coutinho had started vs Man U, just to be sure Watkins is the chosen one. But, even at that... Ait-Nouri vs Brentford, with three assists in his two starts across all competitions since the injury, seems a very good use of a FT

Dawson > Ait Nouri also gives me enough funds for a straight Bruno > Salah move too.

Kane to Watkins for me, he has played every single minute he has been available since GW4.

Sets you up for getting Salah the week later

thanks mate - do we know when it's likely to be announced if there is a double or not?

I don’t. It’s just a case of waiting and hoping any are announced before the deadline.

You need a third defender. That's the emergency here. Johnson to Ait-Nouri (scroll up a bit and you'd see the reasons), Cucurella second sub, Livra third sub

      Who's your first sub here?

Another defender is a good shout actually.
You can’t rely on Johnson and Livramento, can you?

You'll need a defender next GW if not this. I'd lose one of Livra/ Johnson for a Lowton/ Digne.

    Bench one...

    A) Maddison
    B) Bowen
    C) Antonio
    D) Martinelli
    E) Dennis

Will you forgive us if hindsight has a better answer than foresight here?

Maddison has the toughest game, but is the best FPL asset on this list per recent points. Antonio has been hounded a lot but has one blank in his last 5 matches. Martinelli has one of the best games, but he might help ease the headache if the match is postponed. Dennis has Norwich, and Bowen is on fire

Maybe this is where I'll play the fixtures and *very* reluctantly shorten it to Maddison or Antonio. With Maddison being the talisman and Man U's defensive stats being somewhat good enough, I'd reluctantly bench Antonio

I guess your waiting for any DGW announcements.
Laporte, Digne,Robertson, Ait-Nouri just some possible options.

If money isn't an issue I'd pick Robertson or Dias/ Laporte over villa defence.
