INJURIES AND BANS

FPL team news: Injury updates ahead of EFL Cup Quarter Finals

Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.7m) missed out for Arsenal today with a calf injury, despite featuring against Liverpool on Thursday, and has subsequently been pulled out of international duty with Japan.

“Well, Tomiyasu had an injury and we didn’t have anybody to play in that position against Liverpool. He really wanted to push, he tried and he played the 90 minutes, and he felt it again. So, he will be out for a couple of weeks. Right now, he needs to recover, his only focus has to be to have the best possible treatment. To look after himself, and try to be available for us as quickly as he can. He will be out for a few weeks.” – Mikel Arteta on Takehiro Tomiyasu’s absence

Elsewhere, Sean Dyche suggested Charlie Taylor (£4.4m) could be fit for Watford, in the second match of Burnley’s Double Gameweek.

“I would hope so but you can never know so we will see how the next four or five days go. He’s got a knock on his foot in a training game. That cost him today and we will see how that settles down.” – Sean Dyche on if Charlie Taylor will be fit for Watford

However, there was no mention of an injury to fellow full-back Matthew Lowton (£4.4m), who was an unused substitute at the Emirates, though Sean Dyche did suggest after the match that we’d be seeing more of his replacement, Connor Roberts (£4.5m), in the future.

“Connor has done well, he’s only had 60 minutes of an Under-23 game in weeks but he is a very fit lad. We’ve got to look at what we’re doing as staff. What can activate a change and give you something different. Connor was one of them, we have to start using him and looking at him.

We want that demand from the group. Bardo (Bardsley) is right in the hat as well but he’d only trained for a day this week because he’d had an injection in his lower back.” – Sean Dyche

On the suspension front, Burnley will be without Josh Brownhill (£4.3m) against Watford, after he received his fifth booking of the campaign on Sunday.

GAMEWEEK 23 TALKING POINTS

ALONSO DROPPED AS TUCHEL OPTS FOR BACK FOUR

Thomas Tuchel dropped Marcos Alonso (£5.7m) for Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, with the Spaniards late cameo blocking bench points for many of his FPL owners.

Discussing his decision to switch to a 4-1-4-1 formation, the German tactician said:

“Trevoh (Chalobah) had only one training session and Andreas Christensen, a key player, was not available. For a back-three, you need three central defenders and two wings-backs.

We thought today that we could play in a 4-1-4-1 to cause them problems. The deal did well and it gives us another option so well done.”

The system change allowed the Blues’ to dominate the midfield battle against Antonio Conte’s narrow 4-4-2, with Hakim Ziyech (£7.3m) in particular thriving in the new set-up and scoring again, whilst also registerting five shots, a match-leading total.

“It was one of his best matches today because he was very reliable. It was also maybe his best position to be on the wing. We had the wide position on the right-wing, that position does not normally exist in that particular manner when we play 3-4-3, it is more of a wing-back.

Maybe we can think about doing this. It was good because it gave him the opportunity to take risks where it was possible to take risks. He was very reliable on the ball in moments where it is necessary.

The work rate was always outstanding. You can always rely on him on work rate and counter-pressing. So yes, well done and he needs to keep on going like everyone else.” – Thomas Tuchel on Hakim Ziyech

LIVERPOOL DOMINATE ASSIST CHARTS

In the absence of Liverpool’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) representatives, the Reds’ have now managed back-to-back wins over Brentford and Crystal Palace, scoring six and conceding just one.

Sunday’s performance at Selhurst Park was far from perfect, after starting brightly but becoming sloppy as the match wore on. However, Alisson (£6.0m) and Andrew Robertson (£7.1m) were the standout performers, with the latter registering his seventh and eighth assists of the campaign so far.

MOST FPL ASSISTS 2021/22:
Bowen12
Alexander-Arnold, Salah10
Cancelo, Robertson8

As for Liverpool, they can now look forward to the returns of Mohamed Salah (£12.7m), Sadio Mane (£11.7m) and Naby Keita (£5.0m), though it is worth noting that Liverpool’s Gameweek 24 clash against Leicester City is just four days after the AFCON final, with Egypt, Senegal and Guinea all in knockout action this week.

“You are right that we did it without them, but that made it so intense. You have to create, if you want, kind of a new football because if you don’t have that maximum speed on the wing, which obviously Sadio and Mo have, if you don’t have that all of a sudden you have to change how you get there in these areas. And the boys did really well. Ox again on the scoresheet, massive one. Diogo, not to stop more or less in a lot of situations. Bobby’s work-rate is second to none. The boys really put a proper shift in and I’m more than pleased about that.” – Jurgen Klopp on remaining unbeaten without Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita

EDOUARD’S HOME FORM

Despite Crystal Palace having won only one of their last four home league games, Odsonne Edouard (£6.4m) continues to offer real value.

The former Celtic man has now produced an impressive three goals and four assists during that time, averaging nine points per match.

Elsewhere, goalkeeper Vicente Guaita (£4.6m) returned in goal, replacing Jack Butland (£4.4m), ahead of a nice run of fixtures for the Eagles’, which sees them take on Norwich City (a), Brentford (a) and Burnley (h) in their next four.

JUSTIN RETURNS TO STARTING XI

After featuring as a second-half substitute against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday, James Justin (£4.9m) made his first Leicester City start in nearly a year against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Lining-up on the right of a back-four, the 23-year-old featured for the full-90 minutes and largely impressed, with several surging runs into the opposition box.

Notably, amongst team-mates, only Ademola Lookman (£6.0m), James Maddison (£7.0m) and Youri Tielemans (£6.4m) received more passes in the final-third, whilst he also created two chances.

“We’re so glad to have him back, he was great. You can see in the first-half, when he was playing as that right-sided full-back, getting forward, his running was incredible. Then, he played as a third centre-half in the second half and was fantastic. He did great to get through the game.” – Brendan Rodgers on James Justin

Elsewhere, Patson Daka (£7.1m) continued his fine form with another goal, and now has five attacking returns (three goals, two assists) in his last four Premier League appearances. However, with games against Liverpool (a), West Ham United (h) and Wolverhampton Wanderers (a) up next, followed by a blank in Gameweek 27, it’s debatable just how much Fantasy attention he’ll be afforded, especially with Jamie Vardy (£10.3m) due back in March.

Meanwhile, at Brighton, Tariq Lamptey (£4.5m) is becoming increasingly difficult to own after another benching, whilst Lewis Dunk (£4.8m) featured as a substitute after a long spell on the sidelines.

DOUBLE-DIGITS FOR POPE AS BURNLEY SHOW RESILIENT SIDE

A resilient defensive showing from Burnley got their Double Gameweek off to a solid start on Sunday, as they held Arsenal to a goalless draw at the Emirates.

After a dismal defeat at Leeds United in their last Premier League game, back in Gameweek 21, the Clarets were much-improved, and despite lacking in forward areas, their defensive showing offered encouragement.

James Tarkowski (£4.9m) performed well at the back and helped himself to a couple of bonus points, but it was Nick Pope (£5.4m) who hit double-digits, with five saves and maximum bonus taking him to 10 FPL points. The Burnley stopper is certainly on the pricier side, but given how many games Burnley have in hand over others, he might just be worth a look.

It is a building block and we want to move in the right direction. We felt it was appropriate to get back to the basics, especially against teams like this when you are going to have to defend well and do it from a good shape. We worked hard and I was pleased with that. The challenge all season has been finding the big moments and we had three or four when we were in very good positions and couldn’t find the right pass or run. But you need a building block and that is another one. It gives us a nice platform to build on, the mentality today was spot on.” – Sean Dyche

Arsenal completely dominated at the Emirates, ending the match with 76% possession and 20 goal attempts, but they were blunt in attack and resorted to throwing in crosses against an organised Clarets’ outfit. As a result, it’s now four games without a goal in all competitions, with a busy schedule plus Covid and injuries clearly taking its toll on the squad.

We didn’t create that quality we needed. We are at the moment depleted and the lads have played a lot of minutes, I don’t want to make any excuses. We have time to regroup now.” – Mikel Arteta

Any idea which month Arsenal will fit in their postponed fixtures?
I see they have a couple of BGW in Feb.

Looking to sell Ramsdale because of blanks, Lloris because he is too expensive for a non-CS keeper, sell Alonso and Bernardo, bring in Broja as an enabler, finally get Bowen, find a way to fit in Salah with KDB etc.

Time to WC right? Still have 2FHs to to ease my mind on it...

Like some of you here I'm considering a WC. Also, I was wondering if its a potential planning option for a bench boost DGW25 if the DGW is as big as whats anticipated.

Pondering the same. As I have Salah, could probably get through GW24 and wildcard in GW25 but of course BB can't be used then. Getting good bench players (Broja, Ait-Nouri..) and two playing goalkeepers is the plan and possibly use BB in GW36.

I think BBGW25 is a good idea because there may be less rotation at that time compared to the end of the season when many teams will have nothing to play for and may rotate more.

How ‘big’ is the DGW expected to be in 25? I guess we only need a fodder team with doubles to try for the BB.

Id like to use it as soon as I can, get rid but my superseding plan was always to try not to force it with my final WC.

Doesnt seem like it'll be too big judging from these probabilities:

Liverpool, Leicester & City have European ties that midweek too. I think GW36 (or 33/37) are shaping up as most suited for BB

I just worry about serious rotation amongst clubs that late in the season. Especially if City have blasted the league by then. I should imagine Liverpool/Chelsea would have secured top 3. So just the chasing back for top 4 would have regular lineups perhaps.

Good point. Would probably just have Cancelo / no City by that point, so it is a bit of a drawback that they block one of the best fixtures in 36 (NEW)

Slim pickings in the forward lines. Antonio stank out my team for too long and I don’t like how wide he plays now. Watkins- can we rely on him for points at that price? Half think ASM would be a better option.

Suffice to say the cash will be pumped into mid and defence!

The other option would be to ditch the Mo-KDB double up an go for Kane, which would mean downgrading KDB to a decent mid option.

Too early for me just yet. Want to wait on the rules re postponements update first too..Once we know there'll be no postponements for injuries etc going forward it should be far easier to plan. Another 2 or 3 weeks, covid hopefully seems to be settling down now too.

Wait it out if you can, in my opinion. Im just inside 200k myself but still still at least the top 50k. The ranks are quite bunched still at the moment. One big week throws you from 200k to inside 100k. If he's got no chips left bar a FH he won't be staying where he is.

I’m seriously considering it. I’m within 5 points of my main cash mini league rival with all my chips available, but it’s just the fact that my team has too many issues. I’m usually a late wildcarder, but I need it.

I’ll do some tinkering over the break but won’t commit until late in the piece to see what info becomes available.

Didn't want my 2 Evertons, Reguilon, Trossard, or my Watford forwards, wanted Salah back, and i'm hoping we get announcements for 25 and 26 so i can build a team with DGWs and BB in mind.

It's just so lazy. It's like asking somebody for a wildcard template.

I think its quite different personally. Would never bother responding to a request for WC/FH template from scratch, but this rescheduling stuff is really complicated & I'm relying on wizards like Crellin & Mikkel Tokvam to guide me through it, so I dont have any problem sharing their work to help others understand it too

If MANU double in 25, is Dalot an option?

    1. Charlie Price
      • 3 Years

Probably but Burnley doubled in GW23 so I thought Lowton was a good option given that he had played 90 minutes every game this season.

Then Dyche only goes and benches him at Arsenal! Just proves nothing can be considered certain in this game when trying to guess team selections.

  16. Charlie Price

Can anyone explain why there is a 13 day gap between the last two games of GW23? Would it not have made more sense for the Burnley v Watford match on 5th Feb to have become the first game of GW24? This would have created more compact game weeks. Instead we now have to wait until late on Saturday 5 Feb for GW23 to be closed off.

    Or am I missing something?

Because I think they've already set the gameweeks dates

That may be the case but can game week deadlines not be moved providing plenty of notice (2 weeks in this case) is given. Not sure if that would impact in any way.

Only a couple of weeks ago deadlines were being pushed backwards as and when covid postponements we’re announced.

Good question as to why they put the game in GW23. It gives them scope for Burnley and Watford to have DGW and not TGW in GW24 but there's probably more reasons.

Trying to figure any plan going forward, recon it is mostly about getting KDB or not, as well as the timing of getting Salah.
Which one sounds better right now?

    1) KDB in now -4, Salah in -4 before GW25 while selling Ronaldo

    2) Salah in now -4, keeping Ronaldo for GW25, no City mid for no

    1. Kaptenen

Depends on how Egypt does on Wednesday, but I like 1) better bc I think KDB is much better than Ronaldo

How should I fit Salah in here? (2FT. 0.1itb)

    DDG - Ramsdale
    TAA - Cancelo - Alonso - Cash - Livra
    KDB - Jota - Bowen - Raphinha - Gray
    Kane - Antonio - Broja

Could do Kane, Gray, Alonso --> Edouard, Salah, Ait-Nouri.
But really feel like Kane will explode soon and would want to keep him for SOU.

Dont see any way except sacrificing KDB / Kane. Maybe if you WC out a bunch of mid-pricers (Antonio Alonso Cash 1 of your GK) to budget options but I dont really like having 3 premiums

      1. Kaptenen
        • 7 Years

Cheers! I agree that 3 premiums might be too much. Feel like Kane has been really unlucky lately and will def explode sooner or later. Might risk going without Salah for next two if Kane doubles in gw25.

Can we have the debate as to the best Liv triple up?

Jota got a fortunate assist due to the pen but once Salah’s back, IMO TAA/Robbo/Salah makes more sense.

I know a lot of us have team value tied up in Jota and his effective ownership makes removing him a slight gamble, but defender slots are far easier to change than mid-priced midfielders this season.

    1. Kaptenen
      • 7 Years
      2 years, 2 months ago

I agree. Not rushing to take Jota out in order for Robbo but would def do it if on wildcard, I feel like there are many other more urgent moves to consider for most teams.

Was a fairly easy decision for me (Jota out, Robbo in on WC). Robbo on fire & with James/Chilwell injured I think TAA Cancelo & Robbo are currently miles ahead of other defenders for expected attacking returns & CSs combined (Digne maybe an emerging exception).
Also dont like holding onto Jota when all of Firmino/Salah/Mané are fit, esp with so many other good midfield options atm.

Fair enough, he is a strong option for 3rd defender. I might have a bit of a bias toward full/wing backs but Laporte does contribute regularly from set pieces

Laporte had a mediocre start to the season but look at his last eight matches - I have TAA Cancelo and Laporte so Robbo would have to replace Rudiger in my team. But it means losing Jota and committing to four in defense and gutting my forwards.

I still think Liverpool are the best attack in the league (when Salah and Mane back).

You cant pass up on a Liv attacker in that unit where most of us nicked him at around 7.5. I think his form this season has cemented his place in the starting 11. Klopp seems over the moon with him this year too.

    Ramsdale, Sanchez

Bednarek could be quite a canny pick for 5th def actually - I have him pencilled in for my FH in GW27 too. Mahrez is the one I'd be most worried about as he seems to be pretty nailed for UCL matches so could be rested for nor/TOT/MUN/cry

For me, I need to be on the front foot against my ML leader, he is top 50k, I'm just inside top 300k. I've got really good team value and need to deploy it. I played too conservative during the Salah-being-away weeks so need to make up for it.

      A few reasons:
      - Covid numbers are way down & no games cancelled this week
      - Have been making very short-sighted transfers for a few weeks, now I feel like I can plan ahead a bit more
      - If you wait til GW28, you'd presumably be targeting Chelsea & Arsenal fixtures, maybe Leeds, Wolves, Southampton. But all of them bar Chelsea have good fixtures now too (n.b. I'm playing FH1 in GW27 so only leaves 1 Arsenal blank).
      - Opportunity to get KDB for City run
      - Make room for Salah & switch from Jota to Robertson
      - Also needed a backup keeper (had Ramsdale Gunn) & couldn't bring myself to take a hit for it
Made 11 changes total & my team somehow went from "moderately template" to "very differential" without really trying to hard for differentials (per Livefpl)
