INJURIES AND BANS

FPL team news: Injury updates ahead of EFL Cup Quarter Finals

Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.7m) missed out for Arsenal today with a calf injury, despite featuring against Liverpool on Thursday, and has subsequently been pulled out of international duty with Japan.

“Well, Tomiyasu had an injury and we didn’t have anybody to play in that position against Liverpool. He really wanted to push, he tried and he played the 90 minutes, and he felt it again. So, he will be out for a couple of weeks. Right now, he needs to recover, his only focus has to be to have the best possible treatment. To look after himself, and try to be available for us as quickly as he can. He will be out for a few weeks.” – Mikel Arteta on Takehiro Tomiyasu’s absence

Elsewhere, Sean Dyche suggested Charlie Taylor (£4.4m) could be fit for Watford, in the second match of Burnley’s Double Gameweek.

“I would hope so but you can never know so we will see how the next four or five days go. He’s got a knock on his foot in a training game. That cost him today and we will see how that settles down.” – Sean Dyche on if Charlie Taylor will be fit for Watford

However, there was no mention of an injury to fellow full-back Matthew Lowton (£4.4m), who was an unused substitute at the Emirates, though Sean Dyche did suggest after the match that we’d be seeing more of his replacement, Connor Roberts (£4.5m), in the future.

“Connor has done well, he’s only had 60 minutes of an Under-23 game in weeks but he is a very fit lad. We’ve got to look at what we’re doing as staff. What can activate a change and give you something different. Connor was one of them, we have to start using him and looking at him.

We want that demand from the group. Bardo (Bardsley) is right in the hat as well but he’d only trained for a day this week because he’d had an injection in his lower back.” – Sean Dyche

On the suspension front, Burnley will be without Josh Brownhill (£4.3m) against Watford, after he received his fifth booking of the campaign on Sunday.

GAMEWEEK 23 TALKING POINTS

ALONSO DROPPED AS TUCHEL OPTS FOR BACK FOUR

Thomas Tuchel dropped Marcos Alonso (£5.7m) for Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, with the Spaniards late cameo blocking bench points for many of his FPL owners.

Discussing his decision to switch to a 4-1-4-1 formation, the German tactician said:

“Trevoh (Chalobah) had only one training session and Andreas Christensen, a key player, was not available. For a back-three, you need three central defenders and two wings-backs.

We thought today that we could play in a 4-1-4-1 to cause them problems. The deal did well and it gives us another option so well done.”

The system change allowed the Blues’ to dominate the midfield battle against Antonio Conte’s narrow 4-4-2, with Hakim Ziyech (£7.3m) in particular thriving in the new set-up and scoring again, whilst also registerting five shots, a match-leading total.

“It was one of his best matches today because he was very reliable. It was also maybe his best position to be on the wing. We had the wide position on the right-wing, that position does not normally exist in that particular manner when we play 3-4-3, it is more of a wing-back.

Maybe we can think about doing this. It was good because it gave him the opportunity to take risks where it was possible to take risks. He was very reliable on the ball in moments where it is necessary.

The work rate was always outstanding. You can always rely on him on work rate and counter-pressing. So yes, well done and he needs to keep on going like everyone else.” – Thomas Tuchel on Hakim Ziyech

LIVERPOOL DOMINATE ASSIST CHARTS

In the absence of Liverpool’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) representatives, the Reds’ have now managed back-to-back wins over Brentford and Crystal Palace, scoring six and conceding just one.

Sunday’s performance at Selhurst Park was far from perfect, after starting brightly but becoming sloppy as the match wore on. However, Alisson (£6.0m) and Andrew Robertson (£7.1m) were the standout performers, with the latter registering his seventh and eighth assists of the campaign so far.

MOST FPL ASSISTS 2021/22:
Bowen12
Alexander-Arnold, Salah10
Cancelo, Robertson8

As for Liverpool, they can now look forward to the returns of Mohamed Salah (£12.7m), Sadio Mane (£11.7m) and Naby Keita (£5.0m), though it is worth noting that Liverpool’s Gameweek 24 clash against Leicester City is just four days after the AFCON final, with Egypt, Senegal and Guinea all in knockout action this week.

“You are right that we did it without them, but that made it so intense. You have to create, if you want, kind of a new football because if you don’t have that maximum speed on the wing, which obviously Sadio and Mo have, if you don’t have that all of a sudden you have to change how you get there in these areas. And the boys did really well. Ox again on the scoresheet, massive one. Diogo, not to stop more or less in a lot of situations. Bobby’s work-rate is second to none. The boys really put a proper shift in and I’m more than pleased about that.” – Jurgen Klopp on remaining unbeaten without Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita

EDOUARD’S HOME FORM

Despite Crystal Palace having won only one of their last four home league games, Odsonne Edouard (£6.4m) continues to offer real value.

The former Celtic man has now produced an impressive three goals and four assists during that time, averaging nine points per match.

Elsewhere, goalkeeper Vicente Guaita (£4.6m) returned in goal, replacing Jack Butland (£4.4m), ahead of a nice run of fixtures for the Eagles’, which sees them take on Norwich City (a), Brentford (a) and Burnley (h) in their next four.

JUSTIN RETURNS TO STARTING XI

After featuring as a second-half substitute against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday, James Justin (£4.9m) made his first Leicester City start in nearly a year against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Lining-up on the right of a back-four, the 23-year-old featured for the full-90 minutes and largely impressed, with several surging runs into the opposition box.

Notably, amongst team-mates, only Ademola Lookman (£6.0m), James Maddison (£7.0m) and Youri Tielemans (£6.4m) received more passes in the final-third, whilst he also created two chances.

“We’re so glad to have him back, he was great. You can see in the first-half, when he was playing as that right-sided full-back, getting forward, his running was incredible. Then, he played as a third centre-half in the second half and was fantastic. He did great to get through the game.” – Brendan Rodgers on James Justin

Elsewhere, Patson Daka (£7.1m) continued his fine form with another goal, and now has five attacking returns (three goals, two assists) in his last four Premier League appearances. However, with games against Liverpool (a), West Ham United (h) and Wolverhampton Wanderers (a) up next, followed by a blank in Gameweek 27, it’s debatable just how much Fantasy attention he’ll be afforded, especially with Jamie Vardy (£10.3m) due back in March.

Meanwhile, at Brighton, Tariq Lamptey (£4.5m) is becoming increasingly difficult to own after another benching, whilst Lewis Dunk (£4.8m) featured as a substitute after a long spell on the sidelines.

DOUBLE-DIGITS FOR POPE AS BURNLEY SHOW RESILIENT SIDE

A resilient defensive showing from Burnley got their Double Gameweek off to a solid start on Sunday, as they held Arsenal to a goalless draw at the Emirates.

After a dismal defeat at Leeds United in their last Premier League game, back in Gameweek 21, the Clarets were much-improved, and despite lacking in forward areas, their defensive showing offered encouragement.

James Tarkowski (£4.9m) performed well at the back and helped himself to a couple of bonus points, but it was Nick Pope (£5.4m) who hit double-digits, with five saves and maximum bonus taking him to 10 FPL points. The Burnley stopper is certainly on the pricier side, but given how many games Burnley have in hand over others, he might just be worth a look.

It is a building block and we want to move in the right direction. We felt it was appropriate to get back to the basics, especially against teams like this when you are going to have to defend well and do it from a good shape. We worked hard and I was pleased with that. The challenge all season has been finding the big moments and we had three or four when we were in very good positions and couldn’t find the right pass or run. But you need a building block and that is another one. It gives us a nice platform to build on, the mentality today was spot on.” – Sean Dyche

Arsenal completely dominated at the Emirates, ending the match with 76% possession and 20 goal attempts, but they were blunt in attack and resorted to throwing in crosses against an organised Clarets’ outfit. As a result, it’s now four games without a goal in all competitions, with a busy schedule plus Covid and injuries clearly taking its toll on the squad.

We didn’t create that quality we needed. We are at the moment depleted and the lads have played a lot of minutes, I don’t want to make any excuses. We have time to regroup now.” – Mikel Arteta

    Hi everyone,

Who would you bench out of these guys? Digne, Ramsey, Raphinha?
They play each other next game and I'm happy with the others in my team

I would never bench Digne or Raphina as they have the potential to return against anyone, so probably bench Ramsey

I will be focusing on Utd. Have CR7 & De Gea & will probably go with Fernandes over Salah. The necessity of getting Salah back is negated by the doubles. If the double followed by spur. Ill be proritising their big hitters instead. Would be surprised if i don't get Salah until Norwich

Ah okay, Haven't seen those to be fair. What was said? I'm tinkering with the idea of a Wildcard/Free hit if the DGW is confirmed as I don't have any United assets.

Can't help myself but I want to plan ahead for the next gameweek even though its ages away

    DDG (Foster)
    TAA, Cancelo, Regulion (Dawson), (Livra)
    KDB Foden, Bowen, Jota, Raphina
    DCL, Antonio, (Dennis)

    Options I''m mulling:
    KDB --> Salah
    Dawson/Regulion --> Digne
    Antonio --> Watkins

    Anything else you would consider?

Hiya! I don't post very often here (though I read a lot) - mainly because I don't feel qualified to offer much in the way of advice. I enojy most of the conversations that do go on, though it's hard to keep up when things are busy.

You don't need to be qualified to post. The true test of knowledge/ability is to know which advice you read is worth taking. I would encourage you to post thoughts on a subject when you have them, others may disagree but this is how you learn I find. As the others say, as long as posters are respectful, they are always welcome.

Debating it myself, I see it as :

      1) Keeping Ronaldo until GW25, so would have place for only one from KDB and Salah
      2) Getting rid of Ronaldo so can have both of them
      3) Keeping Ronaldo until GW25, KDB (c) in for this week and eventually KDB to Salah before GW25 or KDB to Bruno before GW25 and Bruno to Salah before GW26...

Mahrez form pre-AFCON is seriously tempting for me
Sterling's terrible miss can't be that helpful for him keeping a place either
Just a shame he's a bit pricey when he will get rotated

Rotation, no DGW's and sharing the spoils points me towards sticking to defenders. Obviously they have a lot of appeal but will they score more than the other stalwarts for their clubs?

Been thinking of getting Foden be he isn't exactly hauling his nuts off. I have Bernardo and want to get rid but at least he's nailed, dont know how nailed Foden is when Mahrez is back. Pep likes Grealish, picking 3 from Foden, Grealish, Jesus, Mahrez, Sterling no one is nailed I feel.

I think Raphinha is a bit overrated as an FPL option tbh. Fixtures aren't that good and Leeds are still only okay.

In a vacuum, A. But I don't like Robertson because I think the Liverpool defense is suspect and he's so much more expensive than other options.

Digne is the best pick of the 4 options imo.

Are people of the same thinking as me that its worth holding off bringing Salah back? I feel its better to target players with imminent doubles AKA Fernandes & then Son/Kane. Salah is essential when non DGWs or they have one. But seems a large investment with only one fixture

Problem is Salah can do enough damage in GW24 only when there is no double.

The doubles makes it interesting and opens up the captain debate again when her returns. Bruno has proven to be lethal over 2 legs so does he become a priority over salah?

2 goals and 2 assists all season surrounded by high quality players, Grealish really hasn't justified the price tag or hype. In and out of the starting XI, ineffective and shot shy. Odd to read that Pep thinks he's been exceptional, and against Saints put in his best performance for City. Did he? I thought he was poor. Good man managers always speak positively about their staff but sometimes some home truths are required, too. I'd describe him as an expensive flop. Please, nobody comment that he needs time to 'settle' or 'adjust'. He hasn't gone abroad, it's a football pitch, the weather is the same, he speaks the language, he has FAR better teammates now - many of whom he knows well from the England camp, and he should've hit the ground running.

    1. JBG
      • 5 Years

And yet no media cover about his lack of form or the price tag or anything like that. Players like Pepe, Pogba, Maguire(to a certain extent, he's english as well so kinda protected because of that), Lukaku and Werner has gotten a lot of attention compared to Grealish.

I think Pep just says that in public, but he's probably much more critical towards Grealish behind the scenes. But I agree, he is an expensive flop.

    A few early questions

    What GK?
    KDB or not?
    Jota or Robertson?

    On this so far

    De Gea, Foster
TAA, Cancelo, Digne, Ait Nouri, X
    Salah, KDB, Raphinha, Bowen, X
    Watkins, Broja, X

    Can either go
    A) Robertson, Gallagher, Idah
    B) Williams, Jota, Edouard

Like Arsenal defence, Martinelli and Laporte as well. So a bit of tinkering yet!

Thanks both. That’s why I’m tempted by De Gea otherwise I’d probably go Sa and change Ait Nouri.

Don’t feel United attack is consistent and KDB might outscore anyway. Or I go for Son with there doubles and use money elsewhere?

A also gives me money ITB so may not be able to afford B by the end of the break anyway .

12 clean sheets for Man City this season and 10 for Liverpool.
Clearly, if anyone had had double or triple defences from either of these teams, they would've got some tasty points rewards.
However, with the talk of TAA / Robertson double up or Dias/Laporte/Cancelo options, I thought I'd share my own nightmarish memories of doubling up or tripling up on the defence from one team.
Last season, I had triple Chelsea defence for an ''easy'' game against relegation certainties West Brom. Chelsea conceded 5.
I then had double Chelsea defence away at relegation certainties Sheff Utd and Rudiger scored an own goal.
Not saying it can't pay off as the above clean sheet stats prove, but for me it's always laced with anxiety.

At least there are the assists and obvious goal threat from Trent, Robertson and Cancelo to add extra potential for points in the event they concede a goal.
I'm still tempted to hedge my bets and go with keeper and a back three from different teams.
How has doubling or tripling up gone for any of you? Success or failure?

I think you are right in terms of it being a risk but if you look at it this way, these two have mean defences are are going to for the title which means they'll need to be more secure.

Everyone has Trent and Cancelo so there is no benefit there, if you double up with Robertson/Laporte/Ederson you'll be least winning against a majority whenever they deliver that C/S.

The other question, in particular for Robertson is, is that 7.1 mil better placed elsewhere? It could faciliate a Watkins, Antonio, but look at Watkin's form for example, one return in how many games?

Personally for me, it's risk vs reward, my rank isn't great as I've gone for team value so I need to start making differential gains.

      1. AARON-1
        • 2 Years

Yes, I'm leaning towards Trent and Robertson rather than Jota. He's cheaper, too.

    4. Dammit_182
      • 3 Years

I like a defensive double up and there has been value at times of having 4/5 defenders play. The availability of cheap, playing attackers at Everton/Villa for under 5M, the lack of effective forward options and the £6-7M mid options does leave a lot of cash floating around.

For city/Chelsea/Liverpool they also have good attackers we want in our teams so the Tripple up in defence is not something I am looking at.

Playing 451/541 with TAA/robbo/cancello/Laporte/salah/KDB could be nice and us something I’m considering.

You just have to accept that these teams can concede (take the weekend vs palace/Southampton) and some weeks you will excel, others you could be below average.

In tierney/Degne/wolves defenders there are other options to get to 4/5 defenders and 4 + nuri at wolves is not a bad set up either.

In short I like it and like it much more than having 2/3 strikers to play each week as frankly their all a bit rubbish right now.

      1. AARON-1
        • 2 Years
        2 years, 2 months ago

I'm wondering whether to play 5 at the back: Dias, Cancelo, Trent, Robertson, Digne.
Surely, there would be quite a few weeks when the scores would be great.

I like it. The Liverpool blank in 27 & pep roulette for Dias is the bit that puts me off but as long as you can take it then yea, looks good.

Wait to see what doubles get announced too.

Looks good though and then Should allow you use transfers on your attacking players instead.

Nice, I'm considering the same, Jota out for Salah but Klopp may feel Jota is now in first 11, he has done more than Firmino since Salah and Mane went to AFCON. Jota will score more with Mane and Salah either side so might be reluctant to let him go. I may sell Bilva for Salah but going without a City attacker over the next few could be punishing?

Foden probably out of those options, but I wouldn’t choose any of those options for my team. Foden too streaky and prone to being dropped. Bilva not the player he was earlier in season and Jota for the reasons above. I’d prefer Bowen or Raph, but you may already have them?

    Personally I have

    Fab
    TAA Cancelo Rudiger
    Mount Bernardo Gray Bowen Saka
    Ronaldo King

    Steer, Keane , Livra, Scarlett

And think If I make the changes now it will be better than BB +30 pts after 10GWs...

Just a few musings from being sat near the halfway line at Old Trafford on Saturday:

    MAN UTD

    - Ronaldo - personally don't think he's worth the outlay. Feels like two premiums in midfield will be the way to go. Rangnick has worked on getting United more defensively sound - he's made various quotes about how we were averaging 2 goals a game conceded before he came in. The result is we are more solid, but our link-up play in the final third is still quite poor. Feels like we're throwing talented players onto the pitch and hoping something will work. As a result, Ronaldo isn't getting much service. He'll tick along with the odd goal, but for his price tag I'd say look elsewhere.
    - Bruno - similar to Ronaldo, not sure he's worth the outlay. Took a few corners, shared with Telles, but ultimately he's off most direct free kicks and off pens. Also playing deeper now, as Rangnick has said 4-3-3 rather than 4-2-3-1 gives us more control. Loves a shot from outside the box but was wayward twice on Saturday.
    - Dalot - he was very good. Defensively sound, good physical presence for defending headers at the back post, got forward all day long, hit a couple of long range shots, fizzed in a couple of decent crosses. I think he's pretty clear of AWB now. Great FPL option.
    - Telles - some similarities to Dalot with the bonus of taking some corners (and probably some direct free-kicks if situated on the right of the box) but remains a big rotation risk with Luke Shaw. I think the RB position at United is Dalot's while the LB position is probably 60-40 to Telles right now.
    - De Gea / Varane / Maguire - whisper it quietly but Maguire was excellent, although it was his kind of game, not a lot of passes from West Ham in and around Maguire's feet or in behind - mostly direct balls from front to back which were bread and butter for Maguire to head clear. I think these three are the nailed axis for United now unless there's injuries/suspensions. All would represent decent value in a DGW, for example. Varane even came close to scoring from a corner which nearly caused me to faint - I think it's now 110 corners without scoring for United.

    WEST HAM

    - Antonio - wow, so poor. Couldn't hold it up, looked quite sluggish and was easily dominated by Varane/Maguire. His link-up play was well off, the odd time he held it up he would then release it at the wrong time or misplace the pass. Didn't get a sniff and he just looked completely off it. Of course, WAT up next so probably a hold, but West Ham's midfielders all looked more threatening. I'd be very surprised if they didn't buy a striker this window to take some of the reliance and strain away from Antonio.
    - Bowen - was very impressive, looked head and shoulders West Ham's best attacking asset. Some classy touches and strong direct running caused Telles problems. Unlucky with a shot that hit the side netting, and his set piece delivery was better than Cresswell's. Feels like a long-term hold. Could even see him get some time up front with Antonio being so poor, and Fornals-Benrahma-Lanzini-Vlasic-Yarmolenko filling three of the positions behind.
    - Rice - not an FPL asset but very impressive. Seemed like there was two of him for 60 minutes, but then noticably tired.
    - Defence - I don't know where Fabianski was but Areola looked very assured. A few WH fans said they'd like him to stay in the team... Fab had a wobble vs Leeds so maybe Areola is now first choice. One to watch. Zouma looked good and definitely improved the backline in place of Diop. Dawson always a threat from set pieces and was defensively solid. Cresswell was poor on the goal - maybe a rotation threat with Johnson.

Ronaldo & Bruno not worth the cash but they have good fixtures and most likely a double in GW25 so there is a case to just hold on. Then Spurs will most likely have DGW26 so Bruno & Ronaldo can be sold for Son & Kane that week.

    B) Jota and Maddison to Salah and Ramsey -4. (Will Leicester have DGW soon?)

Yeah sorry I’m going to do that. Another option would be not to take a hit and leave.

It was more getting rid of Maddison over Foden than anything else. Ramsey has looked good, Gallagher is obviously good but he's not hitting consistent numbers (nor would you expect it).

I had settled on my WC and now I'm back here asking for advice.

    This is my squad, but I have one question;

    1) Kane + Gallagher
    2) Bruno + Edouard

    De Gea - Steer
    Cancelo - Laporte - TAA - Robertson - Digne
Salah - De Bruyne - Bowen - Gallagher - Ramsey
    Kane - Broja - Richardson

(Used my BB, so happy to carry one/two deadweight players, i.e Steer/Richardson)

If no other premiums have a DGW then I think having both is a good option. Its a 50-50 call on who will perform. Those who didn't own Bruno last week were hurt badly.

Then you probably wont have Kane for Spurs DGW26 also.

The alternative is no Salah for GW25, have Bruno for then, keep Kane. Switch Bruno for Salah for GW26.

            Always a risk without Salah.

Even im weighing that up but im not on wildcard and currently own Bruno + Ronaldo.
Deliberating whether I should sell Bruno for Salah or not.
Son could also be needed for GW26 instead of Salah.

That's a tough one. My immediate thought was 1, but 2 could be good if Utd double in GW25. Edouard's form is much better than Gallagher's at the moment as well.

I like it. I brought in Robertson last week as double Liverpool def and it done me favours.

Can always downgrade a city def (rotation risk) to upgrade second striker too if need be.

So one of Bowen Gallagher plays most weeks and you switch between 442 541 532 formations - almost too many options!

Would prefer Kane Gallagher over Bruno Edouard but depends if you want the funds tied into premium striker. Also much better value in midfield. If other strikers were more reliable you could go ultra cheap up top

Does feel like you'd want to get some attacking returns from Villa with LEE WAT NEW up next and you probably won't play Ramsey too often

Also be wary of possible City rotation at the back with champions league approaching

Yeah thats right, I think most weeks (minus blanks) it'll be 4 or 5 at the back.

Broja will come in when Southamptons fixtures turn, so that gives me a combination of Gallagher and Bowen as you say.

I'll actually review their games just to see if they balance out well.

There may not be one standout like many teams. I’m on Watkins for now but hasn’t set the world on fire. Will keep him for the next 3. Buendia is interesting but prefer other mids, and I reckon owning Coutinho will be frustrating.

For me Rudiger or Bilva out. I guess wait and see, but Bilva to Salah seems the obvious choice if he is back. You could easily bench Rudiger with that bench.
