Newcastle v Arsenal team news: Martinelli benched as White and Wilson start

Double Gameweek 37 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) continues at St James’ Park this evening, with Newcastle United hosting Arsenal at 20:00 BST.

The Gunners go into their penultimate match knowing that two victories will guarantee them Champions League football next season. After Tottenham Hotspur’s win over Burnley on Sunday, they currently lie in fifth place, two points behind their north London rivals.

Mikel Arteta makes three changes for the visitors.

Ben White has recovered from injury and replaces the suspended Rob Holding, while Nuno Tavares and Emile Smith Rowe also come in for Cedric Soares and Gabriel Martinelli.

Callum Wilson, meanwhile, makes his first start for Newcastle since December. That’s one of two changes for Eddie Howe, with Fabian Schar also back in the XI.

Kieran Trippier is a substitute, but Chris Wood is absent with a hip injury.

GAMEWEEK 37 LINE-UPS

Newcastle United XI: Dubravka, Krafth, Schar, Burn, Targett, Guimaraes, Longstaff, Joelinton, Almiron, Saint-Maximin, Wilson

Subs: Dummett, Lascelles, Ritchie, Trippier, Fernandez, Fraser, Murphy, Darlow, Gayle

Arsenal XI: Ramsdale, Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Tavares, Elneny, Xhaka, Saka, Odegaard, Smith Rowe, Nketiah

Subs: Leno, Lacazette, Cedric, Pepe, Sambi Lokonga, Martinelli, Oulad M’hand, Swanson, Patino

I totally agree with this they should be very happy with fifth and build to UCL

They are not ready for UCL yet imo, missing out will be a blessing in disguise

5th is a solid improvement on last season.

The other day I said as a neutral I preferred to see Spurs in the CL, Son and Kane are world class players at their peak and deserve to be there IMO. Arsenal have a solid team but it's a very young team, they'll be there in the next few seasons and will ve in a better place for it. I do think Arteta letting 4th slip has to be questioned though. I respect he said he wants to back someone like Tavares in a rough period, it's admirable, but when you have to close out the season and keep playing someone that is a liability so regularly then you can't not point the finger, it's not the time for it. Arsenal have had a run of a few tough games and have had injuries to deal with, but the attitude that a good few of the players have gone in with in recent games is questionable. Maybe it's a mentality thing, maybe the pressure got to them a bit. Conte has worked wonders with Spurs he's been there and done it but he seems to have galvanised their bigger players and they seem to be happy to have to take on the pressure of late.

Not ideal but if he had to he could have played Saka. Not good from an attacking perspective but when you see how destructive Tavares was against Palace, for example, I think the benefits outweigh the negatives of that. Even Xhaka there was probably less of an issue.

      Arsenal won't go top 4.

I was at Highbury when Tony Adams scored in 1998 I think, was it 4 nil or 4-1 Arsenal against Everton?

My last minute tout ticket was in the Everton end, they were so pissed most couldn't see the match. Being sick over the seats. Robbing the burger sales in the concourse. Classic stereotypes but all happening.

Arsenal won the title in what i think was the end of the Highbury era?

I actually wanted Arsenal to get top 4, but it's so tight in my ML finish and Nketiah removing Schar from the game screwed me so seeing their dejection is a satisfying consolation.

    1. GreennRed
      • 12 Years

Complete accident, 2 milen jumping for the ball, he landed awkwardly. Shouldn't have been booked. Nice touch from Xhaka to stay with him to check he was OK.

        • 8 Years

Looked like he hit with Nketiah's lead forearm. Definitely a foul. Looked like the damage was done with the initial contact, despite the biased Alan Smith saying it was the landing.

          • 12 Years

Ah OK, apolofies. I only saw one replay from a distance. If he hit him with forearm he's lucky to only get a yellow so.

It was my take on it from the replay. I could be wrong. There was a distinct lack of replays for some reason. I don't think he intentionally tried to do Schar and was just leading with his arm to help get height.
