Scout Notes

How a dramatic Gameweek 38 played out in FPL

What a day of football we had on Sunday, with drama at both ends of the Premier League table.

Rather than bombard you with the usual Scout Notes (let’s be honest, any takeaways from Gameweek 38 will be long forgotten by August), we instead bring you this briefer game-by-game round-up of the final day.

By Tom Freeman and Neale Rigg

MANCHESTER CITY 3-2 ASTON VILLA

Manchester City retained their Premier League crown by coming from two goals down to beat Aston Villa, although there was scant reward for owners of the Citizens’ players in FPL. Only Kevin De Bruyne (£12.1m) of the players owned by more than 1% of the top 10k delivered anything more than appearance points on Sunday; the Belgian’s assist took him to 21 attacking returns in his last 20 starts. As for Villa, their record of having not beaten any top-seven club under Steven Gerrard still stands but neither Liverpool nor City have defeated the Villans by more than one goal this season. With a few more decent acquisitions and a full pre-season under their belt, they will be ones to watch next year. Matty Cash (£5.3m) is certainly someone who has prospered under the current regime: his goal at the Etihad made it six attacking returns in 27 appearances since Dean Smith departed, on top of nine clean sheets.

LIVERPOOL 3-1 WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS

Mohamed Salah (£13.1m) made sure that this was his best-ever season for FPL points since 2017/18 with a goal off the bench in Sunday’s ultimately futile 3-1 win over Wolves. That was only the Egyptian’s fourth non-penalty goal in 15 post-AFCON appearances and it’ll be interesting to see just how ‘essential’ FPL managers deem him come Gameweek 1 of 2022/23, with the premium pool set to be even bigger thanks the addition of Erling Haaland. Six points was a modest reward for the 3.2% of managers (top 10k ownership figures) who kept hold of him but in truth, many of the Salah replacements – including goalscoring teammate Sadio Mane (£11.8m) – outscored him in Gameweek 38. Despite the loss of a clean sheet due to Pedro Neto’s (£6.2m) goal, Joel Matip (£5.3m) finished 2021/22 as the best-value player in FPL based on points per million. His assist for Salah’s strike meant that he ended the campaign having averaged 5.5 points per match, a figure beaten by just four other defenders.

NORWICH CITY 0-5 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Salah ended up with only a share of the Golden Boot as Son Heung-min‘s (£11.2m) brace in Spurs’ comfortable win at Norwich meant that the South Korean winger and FPL’s leading points scorer ended 2021/22 tied on 23 Premier League goals. What an achievement this was for Son given that not one of his strikes was a penalty, and we now await the inevitable starting price rise following his 258-point campaign. Son, the most-owned and most-captained player in the top 10k in Gameweek 38, had to take a back seat for much of Sunday’s contest as Dejan Kulusevski (£6.3m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) ran up double-digit hauls. Kulusevski will be an interesting proposition next season if Son is priced out of our grasp: since the Swede made his full debut in Gameweek 26, Spurs’ front three are first, second and third for FPL points among players.

ARSENAL 5-1 EVERTON

Arsenal recorded a comfortable 5-1 win over a much-changed Everton side missing the likes of Richarlison (£7.6m) on Sunday, but had to settle for a fifth-place finish following Tottenham Hotspur’s win. Gabriel Martinelli (£5.3m) surprisingly stepped up ahead of Bukayo Saka (£6.7m) to convert a first-half penalty, before goals from Eddie Nketiah (£5.7m), Cedric Soares (£4.2m), Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.3m) and Martin Odegaard (£5.6m) sealed the win. As a result, the Gunners will compete in next season’s Europa League and will have to cope with a more demanding Thursday-Sunday-Thursday schedule. Meanwhile, after conceding another goal in Gameweek 38, the Gunners have now failed to keep a single clean sheet in each of their last 10 Premier League matches.

CHELSEA 2-1 WATFORD

Chelsea ended their 2021/22 campaign with a narrow win over already-relegated Watford at Stamford Bridge. Kai Havertz (£7.9m) put the hosts ahead before Ross Barkley (£5.2m) netted a Reece James (£6.5m) cross after Dan Gosling (£4.7m) had grabbed a late consolation for the visitors. Antonio Rudiger (£6.1m), meanwhile, signed off before his summer move to Real Madrid with a nine-pointer, courtesy of a rather fortunate clean sheet – plus maximum bonus – after he was withdrawn prior to Thomas Tuchel’s side conceding. Elsewhere, Ben Chilwell (£5.6m) came off the bench late on for the first time since rupturing his cruciate knee ligament in November, and is a name to look out for when next season’s FPL prices are revealed.

LEICESTER CITY 4-1 SOUTHAMPTON

James Maddison (£6.9m) scored for the fourth successive league match as an expected thrashing of Southampton eventually materialised. Maddison had blanked in 11 of his first 12 appearances of the season but in the subsequent 23 run-outs, he has delivered a phenomenal 22 attacking returns. Jamie Vardy (£10.3m) also continued his last-season purple patch with his sixth attacking return in four matches. While Vardy did suffer an injury-ravaged campaign, he still ended up as the best forward for points per start (5.9). Leicester being out of Europe next season will help alleviate any concerns over rotation and focus matters on the league; we saw the benefits of that with Arsenal for much of the year. As for sorry Southampton, who ended the season in relegation form, dead-ball whizz James Ward-Prowse (£6.4m) made it 10 goals for 2021/22 with a late penalty and ended up finishing over 50 FPL points clear of his nearest teammate.

BURNLEY 1-2 NEWCASTLE UNITED

Burnley’s six-season stay in the Premier League came to an end on Sunday after a 2-1 loss to Newcastle United at Turf Moor. The Clarets knew that victory would ensure survival, but a brace of goals from Callum Wilson (£7.1m) handed Eddie Howe’s side the win despite Maxwel Cornet’s (£5.8m) consolation. Sean Dyche was sacked in April with Burnley in the relegation zone, and despite interim manager Mike Jackson inspiring them to three successive wins after his appointment, they failed to win any of the final four games of 2021/22. As a result, they will join Watford and Norwich City in the Championship next season, both of whom were relegated earlier this month. The Magpies, meanwhile, are ones to watch next year, having earned 38 points in 2022 – a total exceeded by only Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

BRENTFORD 1-2 LEEDS UNITED

Leeds United clinched Premier League safety with Jack Harrison (£5.5m) netting an injury-time winner in a 2-1 victory over nine-man Brentford. After a nervy first half, Raphinha (£6.3m) converted a penalty before Thomas Frank’s side fought back and levelled through Sergi Canos (£5.5m). However, the Spaniard was booked for taking his shirt off celebrating, before then being shown a second yellow card shortly after for a foul, leaving his side with nine men after Kristoffer Ajer (£4.4m) had been forced off through injury (the Bees had already used their substitutions). Leeds were then able to capitalise via Harrison’s added-time winner, which means they avoid dropping to the Championship.

CRYSTAL PALACE 1-0 MANCHESTER UNITED

Crystal Palace ended the season on 12 clean sheets, a tally beaten only by the top five this season. It hasn’t been a fluke, either: only Manchester City have conceded fewer big chances than the Eagles in 2021/22. Wilfried Zaha (£6.9m) was Palace’s match-winner in their victory over a sorry Manchester United, taking his tally to 14 for the season – no midfielder outside of the ‘big six’ can match that. As for the Red Devils, the only positive from this dismal season is that their key assets will be cheaper in FPL next year. Let’s hope Erik ten Hag can revitalise a cut-price Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m), for example, after the Portuguese finished with a points-per-match average (4.2) inferior to 45 other players.

BRIGHTON 3-1 WEST HAM

West Ham United will play Europa Conference League football next season after a 3-1 defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion on the final day. Michail Antonio (£7.3m) put the Hammers in front with a wonderful strike that found the top corner, but Graham Potter’s side hit back through Joel Veltman (£4.2m), Pascal Gross (£5.6m) and Danny Welbeck (£6.0m) goals. The latter has certainly finished the campaign strongly, too, with at least one attacking return in each of his last five appearances, while the Seagulls suffered defeat in just one of their final nine matches, a 3-0 loss to Manchester City in April.

Looks reasonable, though I can’t see Chilwell being 6.5, 6.0 max or maybe even 5.5.
Hoping Eriksen comes in at 6.0 too

For fellow stat/data geeks, this site gives you a silly amount of data to mull over your season.

Good to see what you have got right/wrong over the season.

Hi Becks! Pretty good thanks - got 89pts (-4) & jumped from 116k to finish at 94,701.

I had my ear to the rumour mill here right up to deadline & made one wonky decision (benched James for Gelhardt thinking he was benched by TT) & one good one, deciding to get Maddison instead of Mount due to anticipated rotation. My boy Gabi came through again, plus Matip & Mane (C), and Son/Kane. FH37 was decent too with Maddi (my hero again! a late replacement for Diaz) & Vardy. Still buzzing that Leeds pulled off that escape too!

How was the end of season for you?

Ah you’re a Leeds fan? Massive congrats!

Great finish! Inside the 100k in your first FPL season, right?

Nice shout on picking (and sticking with) Maddison. Not taking any Leicester attackers really hurt me over the last few weeks. It took me a long time to get going this season (Inc not realising we had a wildcard for first half of the season haha). And when I did use my Wildcard, my choices were really poor in 34 and 35 haha but the Bench Boost in 36 was excellent taking me to just outside 200k. But then I made all the wrong choices on FH37 (no LEI, no Richarlison, Ings over Watkins, etc.) and lost all that ground to finish 301,671. But only 40 points off 200k so not too bad, overall.

First season back after years not engaging so am looking forward to next year already!

Yeah, it was indeed my 1st season. Didn't have any goals at start & splashed out on lots of hits but by the end I was hoping for top 100k so pretty pleased. Anyway, been really fun chatting with you & I look forward to us both storming up the ranks next season! Have a good summer!

349k. Second worst season of sixteen in total. Last year was the worst! Had I of not made the horrendous clanger of switching KdB back to Salah(c) in DGW36 I would have had 58 more points and been 210k ish.

Best short-term transfers for you all?
Mine was James Maddison. I only had him for the last two game weeks but he got me 38 points.

        Biggest disappointment?
Mine undoubtedly Reece James. He did next to nothing while I had him. I was even foolish enough to buy him twice having not learned my lesson from the first horror shows.

I had an improved last few weeks but my last GW almost caught me out in my ML's by listening to the wrong info about RJames and taking a minus 8 for Laporte, Toney and Mount in place of RJames, KDH and Richa. (Net Cost with Watkins on my bench of 19pts)

Yes, there was a lot of support for Ivan Toney for the Leeds game (I never owned him once this season as I don't rate him very highly). Chelsea were supposed to bury Watford under an avalanche of goals, but that didn't happen either. Nonetheless, I would probably have opted for Mount if I'd needed another midfielder. That is just the way FPL goes sometimes with seemingly great picks not delivering.

Thoughts on this possible spurs team next season?

        ----- Kane ----
        Son Maddison Kulusevski
        -- Bentancur Hoijberg --
        Sess Bastoni Romero Dumfries
        ---- Lloris -----

Think Maddison is the perfect player to provide creativity for spurs attack. Have a feeling he will leave Leicester to peruse champions league dream

i feel like spurs lack creativity with the wingback system. They have relied a lot on the individual brilliance of Kane and Son this season

No way. Upgrade the wing backs and add a CB, along with an attacker to allow for proper rotation, especially with 5 subs. No way does Conte change the system he's now got the players playing and understanding from the start of next season. Plus that 4 at the back is far too open if you've got both WB pushing forward.

Which one "must have" players you didn't own even once(except FH) this season?
TAA for me. Some might say I could've ended higher than 49k had I owned him, but I'd like to think I used the saved money(owned Robbo GW24 onwards) better elsewhere.

May be I didn't phrase them correctly, but what I meant was not owning a particular player even for just one GW(bar FH) all season. Didn't own TAA(except first FH), and only brought in a Liverpool defender in GW24 WC(Robbo).

Mane. Surprisingly, he was always in consideration but never materialized and not sure why. Maybe due to the sheer amount of performing midfielders, it was always among Salah/Diaz/Jota who made it into the team.

Respect due to Adam Levy (FPL Winner 18/19) who finished 90th OR this season. Will someone ever win FPL twice? In 19/20 he was 540k OR and 20/21 732k OR, so he seems to be playing aggressively, which is the only way to play if you want to win. Remarkably he was 21k OR in GW34 but climbed to 90 OR by GW38 with some shrewd moves including KDB (c) in DGW36 for 60 points.

Agree. I have a mate in my work ML who generally lingers around the 1.5m mark, but doesn't take the needed hits to improve the situation because he "doesn't want to fall further behind".
Knowing when to play it safe and also knowing when to be aggressive is a vital component of this game.

I agree. I lost couple of mini leagues because of having TAA over Robbo and always thought it wasn't worth selling TAA for Robbo (-4). Robbo was overachieving and TAA under. Having too much money can be a curse 😉

I usually play very aggressively, building up TV early. Sometimes it works, ending top 10k, sometimes it doesn't. This season in GW9 I was 2.5M, managed in the end to finish 58k largely thanks to the greater TV but not enough finish top 10k. Took 184 points overall, so arguably played a bit too aggressive this season.

Your team isn't linked. I took a lot of hits, but basically only around 60% compared to you. Being able to have three big hitters and same assets as other ones helped to climb from over 1.5 million to 5.2k. (However downside was that I ended up having TAA over Robbo and still "couldn't" afford both.)

Adam Levy is the reason I can't use the "I'm in the wrong timezone" excuse as he's in the same country. Also he only made 40 transfers so it's not like he took a lot of hits over the season. Playing his WC and BB late paid off handsomely.

I wouldn't say I'm averse to hits but usually reluctant to take them, going to change next season and take hits to get form players in quicker.

I missed the boat on Son until the last few GWs, would have finished 100k and won my ML if I'd gone for him earlier but didn't want to take the hit.

by the same rationale I didn't want to switch to Kane from Son for a hit, but would have otherwise...I don't think it was the lack of a hit that hurt you, just variance. Plenty took hits to switch to Kane and it cost them

Can’t have back up full backs like Cedric and Taveres, they’re both awful and cost us 4th imo. Was much more solid when Tomiyasu and Tierney were playing.

Did any of you somehow managed to destroy your rank and season in 2 weeks? I fell from 15k to 55k.

Long story short: If I bought Son and/or Maddison in GW37, I'd probably make it. These players shaped my destiny, and wrong differentials of course. Yesterday I was just too stubborn and tripled up on City attack instead, who I expected to walk over Villa. De Bruyne, Jesus and Foden all had their chances to score and I feel like they should get more than they did. We had some informations that Leicester will play their best team and Spurs players are healthy, yet I still tried to be too smart.

This season has had more DGWs than ever before in FPL history. Given that DGWs have huge variance, and the resulting fixture congestion causes more player rotation, this has to have been the most difficult season to nail.

For example, choosing between CR7 and Bruno in the right DGWs had huge swings both ways. The captaincy factor would often magnify the swings to around 30pts sometimes. Enormous rank effect.

I'm looking forward to a nice chill season of single gameweeks 😆

I'm gonna bring my FPL pre-season pricing spreadsheet back this year.

Last year they launched the game really early so I didn't really have time to do it. Basically, it's a sheet where I predict all the player prices before game launch.

I found it a pretty helpful exercise to spot players that are under or over valued. In the end I didn't follow it as much as I should have. Harry Kane for instance in 20/21 was undervalued at 10.5m and I knew it before the season and still didn't pick him.

Harry Kane and start of the last season was hardly good example under those circumstances 😉 But yes, sounds like a good idea. We should also make sort of watchlist of those players who could be bargains. Gelhardt at 5.0 could be one, but I expect him to be 5.5.

Why is no one mentioning the fact that Jack Harrison’s goal was offside?

I had Son for dgw 26 and took -8 next week to get also Kane in. Being stubborn doesn't usually work. Maddison I didn't trust at all, but glad that I reluctantly transferred him in. The problem with MCity assets is rotation and the fact that their points are spread. Having said that, C KdB at right time was huge.

Been a great season to be a Coventry fan apart from having terrible owners. Mark Robins works miracles in the loan markets and buys players on the cheap who are then sold on for profit. If only he was given the funds to really push the club forward.

        We are staying UP!!!!

So pleased thought we were gone for a few months now. Need some big investment now.

In FPL terms thanks all for your help. Finished in my second best rank or 27k. Still not quite good enough for top 10k but it is so hard now. Enjoy the break

I don't like having blacklists. Situations and players can change and evolve.

Grealish for instance could be the sort of player that people will avoid for weeks based on this disappointing season. And it also can be a problem when holding onto players far past their sell-by date because they were good once.

Love this time of the year of FPL. A lot of analysis goes into picking GW1 team. Very good discussions with people here as well.

FPL needs to start the game for next season ASAP!

Leicester won the league 8 years ago. Are you still celebrating that or have you changed teams?

Finished 4.2 k in the end which I’m really happy with as only my second season of playing seriously.

Probably nothing revelatory, but my main learnings:

        1) Never make sideways switch of premium players. Son to Kane move paid off immediately in GW29, but was a disaster for next 6 GW’s or so and probably cost me top 1k finish.
        2) Don’t underestimate xMins with captaincy decisions - esp with doubles. Chose Ings over Richarlison on FH, and Ronaldo over Bruno in GW22 (owned both) when Ronaldo was carrying a knock.
        3) Don’t WC for one player. Basically WC’d in GW4 to get Ronaldo as C rather than taking a -8. Poor decision in retrospect and loaded up on a load of players that I soon wanted rid of (Torres, Christensen, etc)
        4) Get on best defenders from best teams from GW1. Wasted so many

*wasted so many transfers between GW4 and GW12 on premium defenders, when should have just sat on them from beginning.

1 - Lots of managers make their gains by doing exactly this. It just might not align with your playing style/you got unlucky this year.

2 - This is a good insight. I didn't respect xMins enough this year. Has cost me quite badly.

3 - Definitely don't WC for one player. Focus should be on improving your entire squad.

4 - This is more about this past season where premium defenders have performed amazingly. Last season at the halfway point, the best defenders to own were Zouma, Saiss and Cresswell.

I'd be careful about extrapolating specific learnings from this season. It's been an odd one with lots of DGWs, COVID postponements, huge captain swings and big underperformance by forwards.

Amen on number 3. I did the same but even worse, getting Lukaku in and losing Salah. Undid a solid start and set the tone for an awful rest of season - even though I quickly got Mo back in, it was at great cost and basically a wasted WC. As ever, United bring about my FPL failings.
