FPL new signings: Who is Arsenal midfielder Fabio Vieira?

Arsenal have completed the signing of Fabio Vieira after Porto confirmed they had struck an agreement for his transfer.

The 22-year-old, who has been likened to Bernardo Silva, laid on a league-high 14 assists last season and joins for a fee in the region of £34m including add-ons.

“I am very excited that we have identified and signed such a special talent. Fabio is a very creative player that will bring high quality and versatility to our attacking play.” – Mikel Arteta

“Fabio is a player with special qualities who is comfortable with the ball in the final third of the pitch.” – Arsenal technical director, Edu

With Mikel Arteta’s side sitting top of our Season Ticker over the first eight Gameweeks of 2022/23, we assess the Portuguese midfielder’s future appeal – or lack of it – in our latest Scout Report.

Vieira has spent his entire career playing for Porto and has already won three trophies, including two league titles.

Coming through the club’s youth academy, he made his senior debut with Porto B in 2019/20 and went on to score seven goals in 23 appearances. Those displays earnt him a call up to the first-team squad, where he netted two goals in eight games to help Porto lift the title.

In 2020/21, Vieira made four further appearances for Porto B, scoring twice, before graduating to the first team permanently later that season.

However, it was 2021/22 when Vieira really came to life, as the midfielder registered six goals and a league-high 14 assists in 27 appearances as Porto completed the domestic double. In truth, he was in and out of the starting XI but finally became a regular after Luis Diaz’s departure to Liverpool in January, contributing to 11 goals in his final 12 league games.

On the international stage, he has recorded 13 goals in 21 games for the Portugal under-21 side, for whom he picked up the Best Player award at the 2021 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

PLAYING STYLE

“Fabio Vieira is special because he can see everything with his head on the ground. He is a player who provides assists and can enter the area, score in midrange and in dead-ball situations. He’s also improved in terms of pressing orientation.

But what most surprises me is the way he displays his quality when many teams use a low block on the pitch, and he can decipher what the game demands. These are the players that are worth a lot of money.” – Manuel Tulipa, the Maritimo Under-23 manager who coached Porto’s U15, U17 and U19 sides from 2017 until 2020

Vieira has played in a number of positions at Porto and is versatile enough to feature centrally or out wide on either flank.

However, he primarily operates as a second striker or a right-sided attacking midfielder, where he tends to cut in onto his stronger left foot, as his 2021/22 touch heatmap below shows.

Above: Fabio Vieira’s 2021/22 Season Heatmap, via Sofa Score

His ability to thread well-weighted passes to runners in behind the defensive line is apparent in this YouTube highlights reel, as is his growing reputation for being something of a set-piece specialist.

It’s also worth noting that he isn’t afraid to take on a shot from distance, with 29 of his 46 goal attempts in 2021/22 arriving outside the penalty box.

* League only

While it’s worth adding a ‘Primeira Liga’ levy on Vieira’s underlying numbers, he does come out well when comparing his minutes per goal, shot and chance created stats against his new team-mates.

However, as we touched on above, many of his efforts arrive outside of the box, which in turn affects his ability to consistently hit the target.

WHERE VIEIRA FITS IN AT ARSENAL AND IS HE WORTH BUYING IN FPL?

Due to his versatility, Arsenal will be able to use Vieira in a number of ways, but it will be interesting to see how Arteta plans to accommodate his new signing and Martin Odegaard in the same XI, given that they both traditionally thrive in very similar areas of the pitch.

Above: Martin Odegaard’s 2021/22 Touch Heatmap

Arteta told Sky Sports back in 2020 about the need for more creativity in his squad, and Vieira’s addition appears to be adding strength in depth as Arsenal return to the Europa League next term.

Look at the players that we had in the past at this club in those positions. You go back to Cazorla, to Rosicky, to Arshavin when he played there, to Ramsey when he played there, to Mkhitaryan when he came in. Even Jack Wilshere used to play in those pockets all the time.

That is a lot of players who are now not here. We have to renew that cycle. They are a big part of what any squad needs.” – Mikel Arteta

The introduction of five substitutions in 2022/23 also means squad players are far more likely to play a more significant role, while adding another creative player to the ranks could benefit Bukayo Saka, who was heavily relied upon last season and appeared in all 38 Premier League matches.

Obviously, at this point, it’s a bit speculative but it does have the potential to cause Fantasy bosses a few headaches, with Vieira, Odegaard, Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Emile Smith Rowe competing for three positions behind the forward in a 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 shape.

Due to that uncertainty around Arsenal’s set-up, a ‘wait and see’ approach is best advised for Vieira, especially given that the more secure Saka is available for those managers looking to tap into the Gunners’ excellent opening fixtures – albeit at a higher cost.

However, a total of 20 goal contributions across the 2021/22 campaign really does show the quality Vieira has in the final third, and he may well be someone we can target in the midfield category further down the line. And by that point, he may also have had a price drop or two – further enhancing his credentials.

Do I believe they have a shot? Sure. Obviously not favourites but if anyone else is going to challenge outside of the big two it's going to be them. Based on their form since Conte came in I'm not sure it's a totally mad idea.

Don't really get the reactions to the post, it's not really something totally impossible to think Spurs could compete for the title given Conte's record in domestic league. It crossed my mind couple of times, but on the second thought Liverpool and City are in a league of their own.

Think it'll be a struggle tbh. For all the Vieira fanfare last year, they still didn't break top 10. Gallagher gone, the usual top 6, Newcastle stronger, plus Leicester won't have Europe and Villa will be stronger.

      9th seems rather specific 😉

Gloomily I suspect regression this time. Can see Eze being an upgrade on Gallagher but we had amazing luck with injuries last time out - best record in the division as opposed to the equal worst the season before. It is still an extremely thin squad and the core is still Hodgson era - for all the fanfare the only changes to the starting eleven were the CBs and Gallagher.

Depends on the odds innit. If he's got 10/1 he's done well, but if he's just bet with his mate he's made a horrific wager.

The most balanced I have been able to come with.

    Raya (Sanchez)
    Vvd, Chilwell, Trippier, Tierney, Perisic
    Salah, Saka, Sancho, Maddison (Caicedo)
    Haaland (Gelhardt, Greenwood)

With a plan to play around those three mids. Sancho/Maddison could become Kulu, Mount, Bowen, Coutinho etc... Saka only sure one on this LiveFPL draft for Gw1.

Though I believe this one would go over in the officialFPL. Still like the structure.

I like that mid-priced midd bracket this year as its easy to switch. By going for one 6.5 you can occasionally target even a Diaz or Mahrez etc.

Bowen not for gw1, but would love for gw2.. Though would make it lovely to own him and no city defence and then him to brace on that city cleansheet 🙂

Sancho is one to monitor tbh & will a Chilwell be rotated to start with as they have Alonso & Emerson as well now?

I think he'll be pretty nailed but with Tuchel you cant be sure... I guess all City, Spurs and Chelsea defenders will have a decent rotation risk every now and then.

Heh, I see you've nicked my front 3 formula 😉

I like the draft actually, although not the Sancho/Maddison part, albeit you've got the right price-points (probably). Your alternatives appeal though.

I don't like 5-4-1 due to have two non-players or bit part players both valued at 4.5, costing an extra 1.0 over two 4.0 defenders, both of whom could end up as starters. I think the game pushes me towards 3-4-3 the beginning because I don't want to pay 4.5 for that non-playing guy up top.

I’m not fully sure of your interpretation and use of ‘balanced’, but for me personally, a team with 1 striker is unbalanced, completely. It will always require two moves, if not more if you want another striker that isn’t Haaland. If you commit to this until the wildcard you’re fine, but this will take some resolve, Atleast I imagine.

      1. FPLGOOD

Well, like said, it's the most balanced that I have come up with - probably should add also that what I'm also comfortable with 🙂 all my drafts with 2 forwards include Haaland with Kane/Ronaldo/Jesus. And those I'm not happy with it for different reasons.

        1. Andy_Social
          • 11 Years

It's strong at the back, strong in the middle and strong up top - in that sense it's balanced.
It is however, a risk. It's heavily dependent on Haaland (although if he gets injured or flops a transfer to Kane or any other in-form striker solves that). It also leaves you vulnerable to rest/rotation as there's every chance none of your subs take the field for even a one-point cameo.

I should know - I've thought this through since my draft is very similar.

            Agree with everything!

Read one of your posts about those two Leeds forwards and expactation that either one of those get to field most of the gameweeks. It stuck to my mind since I had the same reasoning myself 🙂 Just worried I wont get those two for 9m (actually pretty sure...).

I'm also hoping that either Caicedo, Dewsbury-Hall or both would come in at 4.5m. If both come at 4.5m then I'm pretty sure I will get both and actually play them in rotation since they rotate very nicely. Would save a lot of funds to actually be able to field a 4.5m midfielder for 3-3.5points average.

Would afford me to upgrade Trippier to eg. Trent/Robbo since I just cant see myself holding on to Trippier for GW3-5. But Tierney>Trippier for GW6 would work nicely.

I'm not really convinced he'll be a consistent starter even with both Torres and Jesus gone. A lot of people expected he would last season and instead both Torres and Bernardo played there a fair bit, and when Torres was playing at CF and Bernardo went back to midfield, Pep played Jesus at RW too. The Athletic say that Foden wants to play on the right and also that City expect Palmer to get a fair few minutes there this season so I don't think it's worth the risk even with the departures

Almost certainly 5.5M given his performance last year which I think would be fine as a differential for Arsenal's good run. Havertz will be another overlooked option depending on Lukaku's replacement. As a 8.0M striker he would be good for the start considering his scoring output is improving and getting closer to his Bayer Leverkusen 2018-2020 rate. People forget he's only 23 and has adapted to the PL.

      1. Tomerick
        • 9 Years
        1 year, 9 months ago

Yes I agree. 5.5 would be worth considering. Havertz could be a good differential yes especially in a team that’s not bothered about a premium striker. I think he’s probably a bit expensive for any team wanting Haaland/Kane and Salah/Son/KDB. I see a lot more 4-5-1s than 4-4-2s or 3-4-3s this season

Game supposedly launches on Thursday and some notable prices he said were:

    Trent 8.0
    Cancelo 7.5
    Robertson 7.5
    Haaland 12.5
    Salah 13.0
    Son 12.0
    KdB 12.0
    Dias 9.0
    Kane 11.5
    Ronaldo 11.5
    Maddison 7.0
    Dias 6.5
    Allison 6.0
    Ederson 6.0
    Lloris 5.5
    Mendy 5.5

    Might be rubbish ofc

Doesn't the game take at least a day to update before it relaunches?

Might be on a new server or summat, then just switch them once ready

No like a week later. Why would they reveal prices if the game was out?

No they opened on the same day. Reveals in the morning and then opened in the afternoon.

They opened same day. No guarantees they even bother with reveals
