With the boredom of the International break biting hard, we decided to take a look at the players with the best “Goal Involvement” per club. For the purpose of this article, Goal Involvement consists or either assisting or scoring a goal and also factors in whether the player was on the pitch when their team found their opponent’s net, a fact we managed to establish only after looking at every game of the season so far.

Using Marouanne Chamakh as a quick example, the table shows that Arsenal have scored 14 goals with him on the pitch, and of those 14, he has been involved in 4, which is 28%. Given that he’s played 586 mins so far, this means he has been involved in an Arsenal goal every 146 mins.

Theo Walcott’s fine start to the season (helped by his hat-trick against Blackpool) shows he played a part in 5 of the 8 goals Arsenal scored when he was on the pitch, which is a fantastic 62%. Before succumbing to injury, Walcott was therefore involved in an Arsenal goal every 37 minutes he was on the field.

Of all the sortable columns on the table below, perhaps the most significant is “Mins per Goal Involvementâ€. A couple of big performances in easy romps against lesser sides means Walcott and Salomon Kalou lead the way, but take these two out of the equation, and the order is a fair reflection of the season’s performers so far.

A surprise name up amongst the top dogs of Didier Drogba and Nani is Blackpool’s Luke Varney. He has either scored or assisted five of the seven goals his team have scored when he is on the pitch, meaning he is involved in a goal every 70 minutes, almost on a par with Nani. The high ranking of the likes of Moussa Dembele, Johan Elmander and Peter Odemwingie show how, outwith the Bonus Point allocation, there are budget forwards consistently producing the goods so far this season.

Another point of interest is Man United’s Wayne Rooney. Rooney has dropped £0.6m so far, but when on the pitch, his rate of Goal Involvement (76 mins) is actually better than that of team mate Dimitar Berbatov. They have both been involved in the same percentage of goals (44%) but having played almost double the minutes of Rooney means Berbatov leads the way. The stats suggest that if Rooney played the same game time as the Bulgarian, he’d be the one out in front.

This article is beyond excellent. Lots of fun and useful info to be had.

It again highlights how good Elmander has started the season for me, with involvement every 97 minutes and playing almost every minute he is up there where EVERYONE else costs 9m+.

I really might have a go with him if I have an injury or lose faith with Carroll.

i was considering odemwingie, elmander and drogs to free up a shed load of cash. Not sure if he'll maintain it though, went for tevez instead of elmander in the end...

Yeah nothing from previous seasons shows that he will maintain it. Coyle seems to have faith in him though and they're playing a style more suitable to him since he took over.

Then again, can't really argue with Tevez. Wouldn't it just be great if Drogba did something bad and was suspended for five gameweeks or something so we could just flog him off and spend the money?

I really wanted to get Kolarov in this GW, the latest team news shows him not starting 🙠Arsenal have only kept 1 cleansheet so far, with 3 of the next 4 at home, anybody considering an Arsenal DEF, was thinking Clichy with Gibbs injured

I wanted Kolarov too but am going to go with Boateng so that I can take a gamble on either Coleman or Simpson, don't want too many maybes in my team (I am WC'ing btw)

I think Arsenal defenders are too expensive without the piece of mind you get spending money on top 5 defenders

Im WC'ing also at the moment my DEF is:

Alcaraz Salcido Willy Elmo possibly Clichy/Kolarov

I know Coleman is playing OOP but there next few fixtures are pretty tough, and the likes of Osman, Bily could come back into contention for that spot! Is Danny Simpson going to go straight into Newc starting 11?

tricky one Johnny but i would say take Coleman instead of simpson as in the next six fixtures everton have a better chanc eof a cleansheet and will ne to tighten defence to move up the league table ( newcastle have only two good fixtures out of 6)

Clichy puts in loads of crosses but none of them eventuate into goals. Only one assist in three seasons in the EPL. Even though people don't rate him here, I've heard a lot of people who think that the sun shines out of his bum

Rooney IMO is only worth going for if you're playing catch up with your rival(s).

Elmo/Tevez/Adam/Toure/VDV looking like the only double risers on WC week for me, had Elmo already and VDV has already gone up the .2, couldn't of hoped for too much more really, and I get to have Fabregas, and maybe take a little punt on Wazzer, hope he can put in some kind of performance tonight for England, don't want him getting a hattrick mind or everyone will be jumping on already!

yep, I am all too aware of the risks having stuck with him too long this season until I shipped him, waiting for that "big week", if it does come off though it is the best feeling in this game, when everyone is then trying to make space to get him and his price shoots up, it sounds like broken record stuff, but it is only a matter of time before we see Rooney hitting form

Had decided to WC to improve my team value but has turned out to be a pretty poor decision so far.VdV is the only 0.2 m riser. It's like fantasy managers have decided to take a break themselves.Wish I'd WCed in the first international break itself.Anyways, how does this final WC team look?(Although I may not be able to assemble it,am falling just 0.1 short).I think I'll have to get a 4.0 keeper like Al-Habsi,Krul or Mignolet in place of Carson.

        foster,CARSON,
        SAMBA,O'SHEA,konchesky,foley,jara,
        nani,malouda,FABREGAS,BARTON,ferguson,

Playing your WC in the first INT break may have meant a bit more profit, but much less form to go off compared to now.

I'm glad to be using it this week. Overally I've made about 6 changes and much better set up compared to doing this after 2 weeks into the season.

Yes,you are right.Atm,Liverpool look like they can concede to anyone but I am patiently waiting for that inevitable Konchesky price drop so that I don't have to buy him at a bigger price.I bought him for 5.0 and he's now on 5.1.And do you think bringing Samba in is a good idea?Because his next few fixtures are tough and I was thinking maybe ShawX in his place,as Stoke have a good run of games coming up?

I’m wildcarding and would like to get in Fabs.

Only way I can see is:
            CAshley & Etherington > 4.0 Def & Fabs

But would also like to get in Adam & Kolarov

            So options
            1) Fabregas & some bench fodder (Simpson)
            2) Keep CAshley & upgrade Albright to Adam & Odem to Varney

My current team for the weekend is:
            Foster (Gilk)
            CAshley, Elmo, Alcarez, Coleman, Jara
            Malouda, VDV, (Albrighton), Nani, Etherington

It's a big big decision whether to get A Cole or Cesc...I went with Cesc in the end.

A Cole has been class for me but you just can't not have Cesc in your team. Get him while he's cheap.

A for now, but if Kolarov pstarts playing full 90 mins this week, then B but leave RVP until he's fit.

I think Kolarov is gong to be a good differential.

Don't think it matters to Mancini if he plays tonight or not - the reason he swaps between Silva and AJ is to try to keep them both happy, not to rest them (in my opinion, anyway).

I think Mancini thought AJ not trying hard enough and benched him as a kick up the backside. On last week's brief spell it looks like it worked.

12.06pm: Despite his new offer, Lim's chances of buying Liverpool are slim. Lim is only likely to gain control of Liverpool if Hicks loses in court and RBS put the club into administration or NESV choose to pull out. NESV's agreement with the LFC board is legally binding, so a higher bid cannot be accepted. Lim might also try to offer Hicks the funds needed to pay off the debt and take control surreptitiously, although this would seem like a very risky strategy. Lim, by the way, is a Manchester United fan and owns a string of Manchester United themed bars, the Reds cafes, in Asia.

            Oh dear.

Lim's bid imo is just some chancers punt of muddying the already murky waters, and trying to confuse all concerned. It must be time for F.A and prem league to REALLY have a fit and proper person test.to guarantee club assets not called on for first three years of new ownership.

            Hi guys

Any advice please for my team. I have already taken a 4point hit to do Carroll to Varney and Bale to Van De Vart.

Defence is lookign very weak but I hate taking points hits for defenders.

Also considering Gerrard to Fabregas but might wait till GW10 - what does everyone recommend??

Thanks mate, it is not very different to your team actually and i note the two transfers made also - VdV one of them by any chance??

Impressive run of green arrow action on your part - I was gutted to get my first red last week, made worse by the fact I had dropped Alex for R Johnson that week, costing me 15 points and a place in the top 5-10k I suspect ðŸ™

whoh your defence is pretty mangled. but rather than take hits i'd play foster, r.johnson, jags, samba and hope for the best with the arsenal result! you're only shooting yourself in the foot costing yourself 4 points per transfer now

if you had a premonition that a certain cheap defender was gonna keep a cleanie this wk and you wanted them long term, you could take the big risk.

maybe crainey to foley if you have any faith in wolves keeping a clean one at home to west ham

stick simpson in for stearman when you've got a free transfer and keep looking out for when he plays cos he will go up rapidly.

Yeah I think last season's lack of clean sheets has influenced my tactics a bit too much this season to be honest! Very annoyed with my decision to put R Johnson in for Alex last week - it was a rushed choice allowing me to get Gerrard / Fabs, never a good idea to make hasty decisions.

Thanks for the advice and congrats on a great start to the season.

I felt the same way last week as I was 40 points clear of my main rival. The thing is if you make loads of changes it increases the chances that one of the players you dropped will have a good week (eg Alex in my case) and there is no worse feeling! Then again I suppose the reverse is true also...

It only takes one good or bad gameweek and everything can change - as you know from last week! Let your rivals panic as they try to catch you, you are in good shape and don't need to do anything hasty.

If it was anyone but Fabregas we wouldn't be considering it untill he has proved himself fit, especially with City up next.

yeah all good points, there is just that nagging temptation to change things after a good week, and try and stay ahead of the curve. For instance i can't see VDV scoring to well this week, and nasri will be edged out of points and arteta, well the merseyside derby has got low scoring draw written all over it.

You're right though rivals will be mulling over changes more so, so i should just keep it to one defensive change for now...

Simpson is going to be 3rd place bench fodder so don;t care if he plays. But if he does get any points then will rise from 3.9 pretty rapidly.

            Elmo/Simpson/Bosingwa/Boateng/O'Shea
            Nani/Arteta/Fabregas/Adam/Cleverley
            Odemwingie/Tevez/Drogba

            .1 in the bank OR

            Option B

            Foster/Gilks
            Elmo/JARA/ALCARAZ/Boateng/O'Shea
            Nani/VAN DER VAARTFabregas/Adam/ETHERINGTON
            Odemwingie/Tevez/Drogba

            0 in the bank

Option A allows me to play 3 defenders this week to allow for Simpson on the bench should he not be involved and also for Bosingwa to do the same thing, the goal is obviously to have both playing within a week or two but getting them in now so as to be prepared for their returns yet having 3 playing defenders (2 with top teams and 1 OOP)

Option A or B? Or alternatives?

Well B is very like my WC team Fab, Adam, Boateng & OShea being the only differences.

              Everything depending on:

              a)Boateng's tummy bug
              b) Carlo confirming Bosingwa will play vs Villa. Not to sure he will keep CS and might just be temporary sub for Alex?
              c)Odem "inj"?
              d) Cleverley - was inj. Only returning now.

To many "uncertainties" for me to "waste" a WC on.
