With the boredom of the International break biting hard, we decided to take a look at the players with the best “Goal Involvement” per club. For the purpose of this article, Goal Involvement consists or either assisting or scoring a goal and also factors in whether the player was on the pitch when their team found their opponent’s net, a fact we managed to establish only after looking at every game of the season so far.

Using Marouanne Chamakh as a quick example, the table shows that Arsenal have scored 14 goals with him on the pitch, and of those 14, he has been involved in 4, which is 28%. Given that he’s played 586 mins so far, this means he has been involved in an Arsenal goal every 146 mins.

Theo Walcott’s fine start to the season (helped by his hat-trick against Blackpool) shows he played a part in 5 of the 8 goals Arsenal scored when he was on the pitch, which is a fantastic 62%. Before succumbing to injury, Walcott was therefore involved in an Arsenal goal every 37 minutes he was on the field.

Of all the sortable columns on the table below, perhaps the most significant is “Mins per Goal Involvement”. A couple of big performances in easy romps against lesser sides means Walcott and Salomon Kalou lead the way, but take these two out of the equation, and the order is a fair reflection of the season’s performers so far.

A surprise name up amongst the top dogs of Didier Drogba and Nani is Blackpool’s Luke Varney. He has either scored or assisted five of the seven goals his team have scored when he is on the pitch, meaning he is involved in a goal every 70 minutes, almost on a par with Nani. The high ranking of the likes of Moussa Dembele, Johan Elmander and Peter Odemwingie show how, outwith the Bonus Point allocation, there are budget forwards consistently producing the goods so far this season.

Another point of interest is Man United’s Wayne Rooney. Rooney has dropped £0.6m so far, but when on the pitch, his rate of Goal Involvement (76 mins) is actually better than that of team mate Dimitar Berbatov. They have both been involved in the same percentage of goals (44%) but having played almost double the minutes of Rooney means Berbatov leads the way. The stats suggest that if Rooney played the same game time as the Bulgarian, he’d be the one out in front.

Great stuff! Interesting to see Tevez getting 78% goal involvement. Talk about a one man team!

I've got Elmander and Oddbod with Drogba. They all have great percentages too.

Perhaps I can get away with 2 "cheapies" upfront after all.

Oddbod might be injured but will be ready for when I need him. Good to see his stats stands up to Carrol's.

Yes the Tevez stat is one of the main one's to draw from those stats as he has key involvement in the majority of their goals over a sustained period of time.

To be fair we kind of know that, but against other players analysed he is a big player in fpl and picks up bonus points too.

The other potential stat is how effective a fit Torres is to Liverpool, but unfortunately those injuries keep reoccurring.

Close Tevez down, you shut Citeh out.

Others worth a mention: VDV, Elmander, Bent - all 70+

Which is the most important stat do you reckon?

The VDV stats are likely to be affected when Defoe is fit, because Defoe will play and I can't see him upfront on his own, so VDV will likely be pushed out wide. Infact the injury to Defoe has made Harry's signing of VDV look better than perhaps it really is. Time will tell on that one.

Infact as a side issue, where is the future of the short forward in these 4-5-1 formations. Tevez is at least stocky with it, but the Defoe's and Owen's could become extinct and any young player badly needs a trick so at least he could play on the flank in a 4-3-3.

VDV plays almost as the 3rd attacker. Did you notice how poor Bale's stats were though? I suppose the left back position really does curtail his attacking potential.

Short forwards. What do they call them in Argentina? Pirlo or something. Supposed to be special players a la Maradona. The Argies were disappointed when England discovered Owen.

Shifting VDV around to accomodate Defoe would be ridiculous. Defoe should only be used as an impact player for the last 20 mins of games. They can't expect to move forward as a club using him as anything else.

Perhaps Harry will go 4-4-2 at home and 4-5-1 away, making Defoe less of a fixture for the away games. He is also good with waffle and can spout out how many games they have to play and everyone needs to play a part.

To me Harry Redknapp with the squad he has amassed NEEDS injuries to happen to enable him to justify some of his purchases.

He buys so many players. How much money has he spent on Bassong and Palacios yet they don't play so often now yet they cost a combined £20-25m. Kranjcar was bought because Modric got injured for a few weeks and now doesn't get used.

I do like Redknapp as a manager, but it does make you wonder if there is a strategy to his signings or more simply 'a smashing player' is on the market and he buys him with no real knowledge of how to accommodate the player in the team. His acquisition of Keane was also a bit odd. Almost essential to buy him, but now I've got him I don't want him.

Martin B - Agreed, he seems to not be able to resist buying more & more players he doesn't need.

Jafa - When they were at Pompey Redknapp went through a period of bringing Defoe off the bench and favouring Crouch. To me Defoe is a poor man's Darren Bent.

For your information player purchasing has slowed down significantly after Redknapp arrived. He has mostly just signed back some of the players Spurs's answer to the sheriff of Nottingham, Damien Comolli, threw out. Comolli however, now there was a wheeler dealer... he can go tend a bar in Riga for all I care.

                    Straws and clutching? 🙂

Half of those were former spurs players the previous regime let go in their infite wisdom, and players redknapp brought with him from pompey. Hutton isnt even a Redknapp signing.

Naw, transfers have been great after 'Arry arrived. Whereas Comolli just signed anyone that might be good.

My current team for the weekend is:
    Foster (Gilk)
    CAshley, Elmo, Alcarez, Coleman, Jara
    Malouda, VDV, (Albrighton), Nani, Etherington
    Wingy, Drogba, Tevez

I’m wildcarding and would like to get in Fabs.

Only way I can see is:
    CAshley & Etherington > 4.0 Def & Fabs

But would also like to get in Adam & Kolarov

    So options
    1) Fabregas & some bench fodder
    2) 15 playable players

I was just thinking of another set of stats that could help with how you rotate your squad each week.

I'd like to see how many clean sheets/goals scored in the following time brackets:

    1. Saturday Lunchtime Kickoffs
    2. Saturday 3pm Kickoffs
    3. Saturday evening Kickoffs
    4. Sunday Early Afternoon Kickoffs
    5. Sunday Mid-Afternoon Kickoffs
    6. Monday Night Kickoffs

I often look what games are on a sunday, quite often they're's plenty of goals in these games, maybe some players get a little merry the night before? Of course the 'Super Sunday' often contains bigger teams more likely to score goals.

An average percentage from each timeslot would be apreciated to see if you should choose your captain on a sunday instead of a saturday, for example, or if monday night football fetches more clean sheets.

I'd probably say taking stats in the last 12 months would be a reasonable and structured timeframe.

Obviously a team by team ratio against what slot the played on would give the most in depth statistics, or even further player by player. Does Rooney play better on a sunday than a saturday because of some personal lifestyle choice?

Sir Paulos, I know i'm asking a lot, but you seem like the ultimate stat master around here and I just wondered if you'd considered trying to predict these kind of psychological factors into the equation.

MAybe someone should do a longitudinal study hahaha

so when i rotate my defenders as well as considering the obvious factors, i can look at the not so obvious ones which might be the difference in one player or another.

e.g this week i'm not playing phil jones. blackburn haven't kept a single clean sheet so far, yet this fixure looks favourable. yet the game is on monday night. that makes me think that's more likely a 0-0, when the attention is off players on a monday i reckon you see more clean sheets.

if i had evidence to back this up i'd pick phil jones instead of barton this week

same with captains though. chelsea when playing late evening seem to smash teams, am i wrong?

Yeah they nearly smash everyone everyweek of course, tending to watch a lot of football though I feel like at the end of last season and so far in this one when they're kicked off saturday evening it's always been a goalfest.

I'm gonna research it myself now from march-september

drogba capt this week for me when everone will be picking:

            nani(potentially tired from internationals)

berba(2 weeks rest but not scored/assisted in a game and half, man utd not guaranteed to return to form, wba high on confidence winning away at arsenal)

tevez(scored 4 golas at home, 1 away, his head is also in bits, i'm not taking him out tho!)

fabregas(come back off injury, hamstrings are dodgy things, wenger often lies, he could rest him for hard trip away at spartak, nasri and wilshire surely performing well enough to hold the fort home to brum)

i extend my league at the top of my minleague, job done (i hope!)

Chelsea have smashed wigan 6-0, west brom 6-0, blackpool 4-0, stoke 2-0 all in evening kick offs this season.

not done a comprehensive check but they did lose to tottenham in an evening kickoff in april

my predo: Aston Villa 0-3 Chelsea (Drogba 42, 86) Malouda 64 lol

Rooney scores 80% of his goals when the temperature is between 12 and 20 degrees and there are fewer than 4 clouds directly above the stadium.

Of course, this information is useless, but just shows what you can do with stats.

"Elsewhere Cesc Fabregas is expected to be in line for a return here, although Wenger may use caution with a Champions League tie beckoning in midweek." - from the team news.

This is worrying me about the starting role of Cesc and the number of minutes that he will have on the pitch. Anybody to add something?

I would like to add that the comment you just posted is a hunch, an opinion, there is no evidence anywhere to support it so you either take it at face value and worry or you draw your own conclusion to the situation and don't.

I was thinking about it as a one week-er, then Alex (or Boateng/Kolorov) back in next GW.

Normally not a wise move, but a weirdly high number of my mini-league have Vidic, and he's an obvious (well, as obvious as it gets this season) clean sheet option against West Brom.

You're basically comitting Vidic to need to score 8 more points than [substitute] were you to buy Alex right back.

I for one definitely wouldn't encourage that move, I would envisage the two transfer could more than likely be much more wisely used (Vidic will score 15 now to Gohouri's 0).

I hate those arrows, people always get them mixed up, in any event, you like them, each to his own!

Good moves, Simpson won't start this weekend from the tweets yesterday, he "may not be ready" accorindg to Hughton. Torres to Carroll is a good move to free up your cash, and then of course Routledge OUT Fabregas IN could be the most satisfying transfer of the season. Would you not consider doing Torres OUT Carroll IN this week, so that you can do Routledge OUT Fabregas IN next week, if Fabregas does well this weekend everyone and their mother will want him next week, once you do have Simpson IN, Enrique OUT is essential, just not sure to Konchesky, I don't think Liverpool can be trusted this year, could prefer O'Shea
