Nottingham Forest take on Newcastle United in the opening match of Blank Gameweek 28, which gets underway at The City Ground at 20:00 GMT.

The hosts have not lost a league match on home turf since Gameweek 8, while the Magpies’ win against Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out brought an end to a rough patch of form.

Eddie Howe names an unchanged starting XI, which means Alexander Isak continues up front after scoring on Sunday. Fabian Schar is fit to start at the back, despite being omitted from the Switzerland squad, but Miguel Almiron misses out with a thigh problem.

Anthony Gordon (ankle) remains out, while Joelinton serves the second match of a two-game ban.

As for Nott’m Forest, they make four alterations from their 3-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur. The big FPL news is that Brennan Johnson is fit to start despite Steve Cooper saying he was ‘unlikely’ to make it after suffering a groin injury.

Moussa Niakhate, Ryan Yates, Emmanuel Dennis and Andre Ayew come into the starting line-up, with Joe Worrall, Remo Freuler, Orel Mangala and Jesse Lingard making way. Loanee Chris Wood is both ineligible to face his parent club and indeed injured.

GAMEWEEK 28 LINE-UPS

Nottingham Forest XI: Navas, Aurier, Niakhate, Felipe, Lodi, Yates, Shelvey, Johnson, Gibbs-White, Dennis, Ayew

Subs: Hennessey, Worrall, Williams, Colback, Toffolo, Freuler, Surridge, Danilo, Scarpa

Newcastle United XI: Pope, Trippier, Schar, Botman, Burn, Guimaraes, Longstaff, Willock, Murphy, Saint-Maximin, Isak

Subs: Dubravka, Dummett, Lascelles, Wilson, Ritchie, Lewis, Targett, Manquillo, Anderson

He’s gaining an advantage by being in an offside position, the fact that it came off a Forrest player is a moot point.

Under previous rules, yes. Not the supposed current interpretation. Well, the interpretation in other games this season

I swear they make these rules up as they go along.
The Forest player actively played the ball starting a new phase.
But not in this case. But it was the case in similar matches this season.

They've already displayed that they make up these rules as they go along, what do you expect? Consistency? Haha no chance

Anyone saying it’s not offside don’t understand football or the laws of the game he is clearly interfering with play whilst in an offside position. No arguments.

        Offside law:

“ A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched* by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by:
interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate or
        interfering with an opponent by:
preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or
challenging an opponent for the ball or
clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or
making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball”

        Highlighting:

“ interfering with an opponent by:
preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or
challenging an opponent for the ball”

Was Longstaff guilty of this? Yes.

No point in quoting the laws of the game mate. Rashford against City violated several of those options and they allowed that one so

Previous refereeing mistakes are a useless argument. These are the laws of the game and the referee and VAR followed them tonight. Whether or not they were followed for the Rashford goal is that refs mistake.

I would argue that consistency from match to match is more important than these laws of the game which change so often and are so open to interpretation anyway

If you're arguing in the favour of consistency then the implications is follow the error from the previous game. How can you possibly justify this over the laws of the game ? VAR should eradicate interpretation as offside laws are fact . Its VAR that forest work on occasions not the laws

Ball wasn't played to him. Was played away from him.
          He was inactive.
Forest player played it to him with an intention of playing the ball. Only then becomes active

    Absurd decision (Arsenal fan).
Longstaff wasn’t the intended recipient on first phase. Ball has then been turned over, defender makes a deliberate play and then falls to Longstaff. What about salah goal earlier this season? Prem refs are an absolute disgrace and VAR is a sham. The insult is they guys behind VAR basically said, I don’t understand the rules, so over to you Paul tierney (probably the worst ref in the league) go and have a look at the screen and make a decision under pressure. I’m sick to death of the ineptitude of these refs

    1. bombonera

Yep good point. Aren't offsides supposed to be cut and dry? So why has the VAR referred it to the onfield ref? Just deferring responsibility

In a ML of 24, 18 teams are identical. Quick 2 minute search and it's the same team as a YT content creator. In fact the teams have been the same for several months, I just didn't bother checking up until now.

      1. Davido989
        • 15 Years

Underperforming premiums should mean more variance in teams as there's more budget to spread or different captain options esp with Haaland blanking etc.

          Not necessarily.

With fewer performing options & plentiful budget, it may mean when people are more likely to go for the same 'optimal' player each GW transfer, becuase everyone can afford them.

If the funds were stretches people may have to get more thrifty with their picks.
